구주께서는 베드로를 비롯한 사도들과 제자들에게 다른 사람들을 양육해야 하는 이유와 그 방법에 대해 가르치셨습니다. 여러분은 구주께서 제자들을 가르치시기 전에 먼저 그들을 먹이셨다는 성경의 이야기를 기억할 것입니다. 주님께서는 십자가에 달리셨으며, 그런 후 부활하셨습니다. 그분의 종들은 갈릴리로 돌아갔습니다. 그들은 밤새도록 한 마리의 물고기도 잡지 못했습니다. 새벽녘에 그들은 해변 가까이에 갔으며, 처음에는 주님을 알아보지 못했습니다. 주님께서는 그들을 부르시어 그물을 던질 곳을 알려 주셨습니다. 그들이 그분의 말씀대로 하자 물고기가 그물에 가득 잡혔습니다. 그들은 해변에 계신 주님을 맞으러 달려갔습니다.
그들은 숯불에 구어지고 있는 생선과, 떡을 보았습니다. 저는 종종 누가 불을 지피고, 물고기를 잡았으며, 음식을 요리했는지 궁금했습니다. 그러나 제자들에게 물고기와 떡 이상의 것을 먹이기 위해 준비하신 이는 바로 주님이셨습니다. 주님께서는 우선 제자들에게 먹으라고 하셨습니다. 그런 다음 영적으로 먹이는 것에 대해 가르치셨습니다. 그리고 그분께서는 제자들에게 한 계명을 주셨는데, 그 계명은 지금도 여전히 우리에게 적용됩니다.
“그들이 조반 먹은 후에 예수께서 시몬 베드로에게 이르시되 요한의 아들 시몬아 네가 이 사람들보다 나를 더 사랑하느냐 하시니 이르되 주님 그러하나이다 내가 주님을 사랑하는 줄 주님께서 아시나이다 이르시대 내 어린 양을 먹이라 하시고”(요한복음 21:15)
하나님의 성도들에게는 항상 서로를, 특별히 복음의 지식이 부족한 자들을 영적으로 양육하라는 계명이 주어졌습니다. 우리는 교회의 신회원들을 양육할 능력이 한층 커진 시대에 살도록 축복 받았으며, 따라서 충실한 성도들은 그러한 능력을 갖게 될 것입니다. 이 능력은 이전에도 주님의 백성들 가운데 주어졌습니다. 몰몬경에는 한때 주님의 백성들이 어떻게 행했는가에 대해 다음과 같이 나와 있습니다. “그들이 … 헤아림을 받았고, 그들을 기억하며 하나님의 선하신 말씀으로 양육하여 그들을 바른 길에 있도록 지키며 그들로 하여금 쉬지 않고 기도하게 하며 그들의 신앙의 창시자이시요 완성자이신 그리스도의 공덕만을 의지하도록 하려 … 하였느니라.”(모로나이서 6:4)
우리 모두는 다른 사람의 신앙을 키워주려고 노력한 적이 있습니다. 우리 대부분은 다른 사람들이 우리 자신의 신앙을 염려해 주었던 것과 더불어 그들의 사랑을 느꼈던 적이 있습니다. 우리 가운데 일부는 자녀들로부터 “저랑 같이 교회에 가요.” 또는 “같이 기도해요.”라는 말을 들었을 것입니다. 그리고 실망한 적도 있을 것입니다. 사랑하는 사람의 신앙을 키워 주려는 우리의 노력을 그들이 받아들이지 않았을 수도 있습니다. 그 아픈 경험으로부터 우리는, 하나님께서는 양육 받기를 원치 않는 그분의 자녀들의 선택도 존중하신다는 사실을 알게 됩니다. 그러나 지금은 낙관적인 생각으로 마음을 새롭게 하고 양육할 수 있는 능력이 커지기를 소망할 때입니다.
주님께서는 살아 계신 선지자를 통해 새로운 개종자들이 침례의 물로 들어서는 풍성한 수확을 거두실 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 주님께서는 우리를 통해 이 일을 하실 것입니다. 그러므로 우리는 어린아이도 할 수 있는 단순한 일을 함으로써, 신앙이 연약한 자들을 양육할 더 큰 능력을 부여 받게 되리라는 확신을 가질 수 있습니다.
이것은 우리 자신의 마음가짐에서 시작됩니다. 우리가 온 마음을 다해 무엇을 원하느냐에 따라 성신을 동반할 권리를 주장할 수 있는지 없는지가 크게 결정될 것이며, 이 성신의 동반 없이는 영적으로 양육하는 일이 있을 수 없습니다. 하나님 아버지께서 양육할 자들을 찾으시는 것처럼 우리도 오늘 그러한 사람들을 찾아 나설 수 있으며, 그리하여 그분께서 그들에 대해 느끼시는 것을 부분적으로나마 우리도 느낄 수 있습니다.
교회의 신회원들은 그분의 자녀들입니다. 전세에서 하나님은 그들을 알고 계셨고 그들도 하나님을 알고 있었습니다. 하나님 아버지와 그분의 아들이신 주 예수 그리스도의 목적은 자녀들이 선택하기만 한다면 그들을 하나님께로 돌아오게 하여 영생을 주시는 것입니다. 그분은 그분의 자녀들을 찾고 가르치며 침례 주도록 선교사들을 성령으로 인도하고 지지하십니다. 하나님 아버지께서는 독생자로 하여금 자녀들의 죗값을 치르게 하셨습니다. 하나님 아버지와 구주께서는 개종자들을 연약한 어린양으로 보십니다. 그분들께서는 그 개종자들을 위해 우리로서는 도저히 헤아릴 수 없는 대가를 치르셨습니다.
부모라면 사랑이 많으신 하나님 아버지의 마음을 조금은 헤아릴 수 있습니다. 자녀들이 우리의 슬하를 떠날 나이에 이르게 되면 우리는 그들의 안전을 걱정하며, 도움을 줄 자들이 그들을 저버리지나 않을까 염려하게 됩니다. 우리는 교회의 신회원들에 대해 하나님 아버지와 구주께서 가지고 계신 사랑과, 우리가 그들을 영적으로 양육할 것이라는 그분들의 신뢰를 조금이나마 느낄 수 있습니다.
신회원들에 대해 마음으로 느끼는 이러한 감정들은 우리로 하여금 영의 도움을 받을 자격을 갖추게 하여 우리의 신성한 책임을 방해하는 두려움을 극복할 수 있게 해줍니다. 다른 사람의 신앙을 키워 주어야 하는 임무를 맡기에는 우리의 역량이 부족하다는 두려움을 갖는 것은 당연한 일입니다. 우리 자신의 능력이 아무리 크다 해도 충분치 않을 것입니다. 그러나 우리의 한계를 현실적으로 본다는 것은 영과 그 권능에 의지하도록 인도하는 겸손을 낳습니다.
브리검 영 회장님(1801~1877년)은 우리의 약점에도 불구하고 우리가 용기를 갖도록 다음과 같이 말씀했습니다. “연사가 회중에게 말씀을 전할 때, 비록 어설픈 몇 마디 말밖에 전할 수 없다 하더라도, 하나님 앞에 그의 마음이 순수하다면, 그 같은 어설픈 문장은 주님의 영이 함께 하지 않은 위대한 웅변보다 더 큰 가치를 지니며, 하나님과 천사와 모든 선한 자들이 보기에 더 진실하고 참됩니다. 기도를 드릴 때, 기도의 말씀이 비록 몇 마디밖에 되지 않고 그 표현이 어눌하다 하더라도, 하나님 앞에 마음이 순수하다면, 그 기도는 키케로[기원전 1세기경의 로마의 웅변가]와 같은 대웅변가의 능변보다 더 효력이 있습니다. 우리의 표현 방식에 관해, 온 인류의 아버지이신 주님께서는 어떠한 면에 마음을 두고 계시겠습니까? 단순하고 정직한 마음이, 인간이 만들어내는 허식과 교만과 화려함과 능변보다 주님께 더 가치가 있습니다. 진지함, 정직, 어린아이와 같은 단순함 등으로 충만해진 마음에서 하나님께서는 다음과 같은 영원한 원리를 보실 것입니다. “그것은 내 왕국의 영이요, 내가 나의 자녀들에게 준 영이니라.”1
어린이는 다른 이의 신앙을 강화할 수 있도록 우리에게 힘을 주는 일들을 할 수 있습니다. 어린이들은 최근에 개종한 사람에게 함께 모임에 가자고 권유할 수 있으며 예배당이나 공과 교실에 들어오는 새로운 회원을 웃으며 반길 수 있습니다. 우리도 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 우리가 그렇게 할 때, 성신은 분명 우리의 동반자가 될 것입니다. 무슨 이야기를 할까, 상대방이 거절하지는 않을까 하는 등의 두려움은 사라지게 될 것이며, 새로 온 사람들이 낯설게 여겨지지 않을 것입니다. 그리고 성신은 우리가 복음의 진리들을 이야기하기도 전에 그들을 양육하기 시작할 것입니다.
친절하게 다가가는 양육은 회원 이상의 부름이 요구되지 않습니다. 우리들 중 가르치거나 복음을 전하도록 부름을 받지 않은 사람들도 준비만 하면 하나님의 선한 말씀으로 양육할 수 있습니다. 신회원과 이야기를 나눌 때마다, 그리고 공과 토론에 참여할 때마다 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 양육하고 강화시킬 말을 하기 위해서는 영의 도움이 필요합니다.
다른 사람을 양육할 때 해야 할 말을 알기 위해 영을 불러들이는 두 가지 중요한 열쇠가 있습니다. 그것은 매일의 경전 공부와 신앙의 기도입니다.
매일 경전을 공부하고 상고한다면 성신은 우리가 할 말을 알려 줄 것입니다. 경전의 말씀들이 성령을 부릅니다. 주님께서는 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “내 말을 선포하려 힘쓰지 말고 먼저 나의 말을 얻으려 힘쓰라. 그리하면 네 혀가 풀리리라. 그런 후에 네가 원하면, 너는 나의 영과 나의 말, 참으로, 사람을 확신시키는 하나님의 능력을 가지게 되리라.”(교리와 성약 11:21) 매일 경전을 공부함으로써 가벼운 일상 대화에서나 공과 시간에 교사의 질문에 답할 때에도 우리는 이러한 축복에 의지할 수 있습니다. 우리는 주님께서 약속하신 다음과 같은 권능을 경험하게 될 것입니다. “너희는 무엇을 말할까 미리 염려하지 말고 끊임없이 생명의 말씀을 너희 마음에 쌓아 두라. 그리하면 바로 그 시각에 모든 사람에게 할당되는 분량이 너희에게 주어지리라.” (교리와 성약 84:85)
우리는 경전의 말씀을 읽을 뿐 아니라 그것을 연구함으로써 하나님의 말씀을 귀히 여기게 됩니다. 우리는 경전 전체를 빠르고 피상적으로 읽기보다는 몇 가지 말씀이라도 숙고하고 그 말씀을 성신의 역사를 통해 귀한 보물로 만듦으로써 양육될 수 있습니다.
경전을 숙고할 때 성신이 함께하는 것처럼, 매일 기도로 간구할 때에도 마찬가지입니다. 우리가 기도로 구하지 않는다면 성신은 좀처럼 오지 않을 것이며, 우리의 간청이 없는 상황에서 우리 곁에 머물지 않을 것입니다. “그리고 영은 신앙의 기도로써 너희에게 주어지리니, 만일 너희가 영을 받지 아니하거든 가르치지 말지니라.” (교리와 성약 42:14) 우리 아버지의 자녀들을 양육하기 위해 참마음 참뜻으로 성신의 동반을 꾸준히 간구할진대 우리와 우리가 사랑하고 봉사하는 사람들에게 분명히 축복이 임하게 될 것입니다.
우리가 양육할 때 사용해야 하는 하나님의 선한 말씀은 단순한 복음의 교리입니다. 단순하거나 반복적이라고 해서 걱정할 필요는 없습니다. 사람들을 양육하기 위해 사람들이 그 교리를 어떻게 받아들여야 하는가를 주님께서는 이렇게 설명하셨습니다.
“이것이 나의 교리요, 이는 아버지께서 내게 주신 교리라, 내가 아버지를 증거하고, 아버지는 나를 증거하시며, 성신은 아버지와 나를 증거하시나니, 나는 아버지께서 모든 사람에게 어디에 있든지 회개하고 나를 믿을 것을 명하심을 증거하노라.
“또 누구든지 나를 믿고 침례를 받는 자, 그는 구원을 얻으리니, 하나님의 나라를 기업으로 얻을 자들이 그들이리라.
또 나를 믿지 아니하고, 침례를 받지 아니하는 자는 정죄를 받으리라.
“진실로 진실로 내가 너희에게 이르노니 이것이 나의 교리요, 나는 이것이 아버지께로부터 온 것임을 증거하노라. 또 누구든지 나를 믿는 자는 또한 아버지를 믿나니, 그에게 아버지께서는 나를 증거하시리로다. 이는 아버지께서 불과 성신으로 그를 방문하실 것임이라.”(제3니파이 11:32~35)
계속해서 주님은 그 단순한 교리로 양육 받으며 견디는 자들, 즉 해의 왕국을 상속 받을 자들을 어린아이와 같은 자들로 묘사하셨습니다. 영의 속삭임을 느끼며 그 명령에 따르고 순종하기 위해서는 어린아이와 같은 마음이 필요합니다. 이것이 바로 하나님의 선한 말씀으로 양육 받는 데 필요한 것입니다.
아울러 그것이 교회의 신회원들을 먹이는 우리의 임무에 대해 낙관해도 좋은 이유입니다. 교리에 대한 지식이 해박하건 그렇지 않건 간에 그들은 침례 의식을 겸허히 받아들였으며 성신을 동반할 권리를 받았습니다. 그리하여 구주께서 그들을 어린양이라고 칭하실 만큼 연약한 그들의 신앙은 주님께서 요구하시는 것을 기꺼이 행하며 자신을 증명해 보이는 시기에 이르게 됩니다.
신회원들이 갖추어야 할 모든 것들에 대해 사랑으로 명확하게 설명해 주고, 교회에서 봉사할 기회를 현명하게 확대시켜 주며, 그 봉사에 대한 성과를 자애로운 마음으로 평가하고 지속적인 격려로 양육한다면, 그들은 성신의 동반으로 강화될 것이며 우리의 능력을 초월하는 권능으로 양육될 것입니다. 그들이 끝까지 견딜진대 지옥의 문이라도 그들을 이기지 못할 것입니다.
브리검 영 회장님은 그들의 견디는 힘이 어떻게 자라는지에 대해 다음과 같이 약속했습니다. “주님 앞에 겸손하며 온전하고 기꺼운 마음으로 그분을 섬기는 자들은 어느 정도 분량을 받을 때까지 조금씩, 말씀에 말씀을 더하고, 교훈에 교훈을 더하며, 여기에서 조금 저기에서 조금 더하여, 존 테일러 형제의 말씀처럼 ‘이따금씩’ 받을 것입니다. 그런 다음 그들이 받은 것을 키우고 소중히 하며 늘 간직하여 모든 선한 생각과 교리와 원리로 고양되고, 그들이 할 수 있는 모든 선한 일을 한다면, 머지않아 주님께서는 그들 안에서 솟아나는 영생의 샘이 될 것입니다.”2
이것은 모로나이서에서 말하는 “신앙의 창시자이시요 완성자이신 그리스도의 공덕만을 의지”(모로나이서 6:4)함을 뜻하는 것입니다. 우리가 그분의 계명에 순종할 때 속죄를 통해 우리를 정결케 하실 분은 구주이십니다. 신앙으로 침례의 물에 들어가고 성신의 은사를 받는 자들을 양육하실 분은 주님이십니다. 그들이 항상 주님을 기억하고 어린아이처럼 순종할 때 그분의 영이 항상 그들과 함께한다는 것을 확신시켜 주실 분도 주님이십니다.
여러분과 저는 작은 일을 통해 큰 일을 이룰 수 있으며, 또 이룰 것입니다. 우리는 성신을 동반할 자격을 갖추기 위해 공부하고 기도하며 봉사할 것입니다. 그런 후에 우리는 신회원들을 하나님 아버지의 귀하고 사랑스런 자녀로 볼 수 있게 될 것이며, 사랑과 봉사할 기회와 하나님의 선한 말씀으로 그들을 양육하도록 인도 받게 될 것입니다. 그리하여 우리는, 우리가 지금 전 세계에서 일하는 선교사들의 동반자이듯이, 위대한 선교사 암몬이 그의 선교 사업 동반자들에게 했던 말이 실현되는 것을 우리 시대에 볼 수 있을 것입니다.
“보라, 밭은 무르익었고, 지금 너희는 복되나니, 이는 너희가 낫을 휘둘러, 너희 힘을 다하여 거두었음이라. 참으로 온종일 너희가 수고하였나니, 너희 곡식 단의 수를 볼지어다! 그것들이 곳간으로 모여져 버려지지 아니하리라.
“참으로 그들은 마지막 날에 폭풍에 부딪쳐 쓰러지지 아니할 것이요, 참으로 회리바람에 써레질 당하지도 아니할 것이며, 오히려 폭풍이 올 때 제자리에 모여져, 폭풍이 그들에게까지 침투하지 못할 것이요, 어디든지 참으로 원수가 그들을 휩쓸어 가고자 하는 곳으로 광풍에 밀려가지도 아니하리라.
“또 보라, 그들은 추수하는 주인의 손 안에 있나니, 그들은 그의 것이라, 마지막 날에 그가 그들을 일으키시리로다.”(앨마서 26:5~7)
우리는 단순히 순종함으로써 주님께서 어린양들, 즉 그분의 어린양들을 양손으로 잡으사 품에 안으시고 우리의 아버지이시며 그들의 아버지이신 하나님의 집으로 돌려보내시는 일을 도울 수 있습니다. 저는 그 신성하게 추수한 영혼들을 보존하는 일에 참여할 때 하나님께서 우리에게 하늘의 권능을 부어 주신다는 것을 알고 있습니다.
기도하는 마음으로 이 메시지를 공부한 후에 여러분이 가르치는 사람들이 참여하도록 격려하면서 이 메시지를 나눈다. 몇 가지 예를 들면 다음과 같다.
1. 가족 중 한 명에게 이 메시지의 첫 세 단락을 읽게 한 후, 다음과 같이 질문한다. “왜 주님께서는 제자들을 가르치시기 전에 먼저 그들을 먹이셨다고 생각합니까? 우리는 와드(또는 지부)의 신회원들을 어떻게 강화시킬 수 있습니까?”
2. 가족 구성원들과 함께, 순종하기만 하면, 그들이 알고 있는 사람들을 축복해 줄 복음 교리를 몇 가지 생각해 본다. 그러한 교리들을 그 사람들과 나누거나 그 교리들로 그들을 강화할 수 있는 방법들을 토론한다.
3. 여러분이 방문하는 가정에 자녀들이 있다면, 어린양의 사진을 보여 줄 수도 있다. 왜 어린양들을 지키고 보살펴야 하는지 물어본다. 사람들은 어린양처럼, 때때로 도움이 필요하다고 설명한다. 어려운 가운데서도 다른 사람들에게 복음을 나누고, 친구가 되어 주고, 도움을 주는 것은 선한 목자가 양들에게 하는 것과 같다. 간단한 봉사를 통해서 이웃이나 친구, 또는 가족 구성원을 도울 계획을 세운다.
The Savior taught Peter and His other Apostles and disciples why and how they were to nourish others. You remember that in the Bible account He fed them before He taught them. He had been crucified and then resurrected. His servants had gone to Galilee. They had fished through the night, catching nothing. When they drew near to shore in the dawn, they did not at first recognize Him. He called out to them, telling them where to cast their nets, and when they did as He told them, the nets were filled. They rushed to greet Him on the shore.
They found a fire of coals with fish cooking and bread. I have often wondered who laid the fire, caught the fish, and cooked the meal, but it was the Master who prepared His disciples to be fed more than fish and bread. He let them eat first. And then He taught them of spiritual feeding. And He gave a commandment to them that still stands for each of us.
“So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs” (John 21:15).
The Saints of God have always been under covenant to nourish each other spiritually, especially those tender in the gospel. We are blessed to live in a time when a great increase in that capacity to nourish new members of the Church must and therefore will be poured out upon the faithful Saints. That power has been given before among the Lord’s people. This is the description of how the Lord’s people did it once in a time recounted in the Book of Mormon: “They were numbered … that they might be remembered and nourished by the good word of God, to keep them in the right way, to keep them continually watchful unto prayer, relying alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their faith” (Moroni 6:4).
All of us have tried at some time to nourish another person’s faith. Most of us have felt the concern of others for our own faith, and with it we have felt their love. More than a few of us have had a child look up to us and say, “Would you like to go to church with me?” or, “Would you pray with me?” And we have had our disappointments. Someone we love may not have accepted our attempts to nourish his or her faith. We know from painful experience that God respects the choice of His children not to be nourished. Yet this is a time to feel renewed optimism and hope that our power to nourish will be increased.
The Lord through His living prophet has told us that He will preserve the bounteous harvest of new converts entering the waters of baptism. And the Lord will do it through us. So we can have confidence that by doing simple things, things that even a child can do, we will be granted greater power to nourish tender faith.
The place to start is with our own hearts. What we want with all our hearts will determine in large degree whether we can claim our right to the companionship of the Holy Ghost, without which there can be no spiritual nourishing. We can begin today to try to see those we are to nourish as our Heavenly Father sees them and so feel some of what He feels for them.
Those new members of the Church are His children. He has known them and they have known Him in the world before this one. His purpose and that of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, is to have them return to Him and to give them eternal life if they will only choose it. He has led and sustained His missionaries by the Holy Spirit to find and teach and baptize them. He allowed His Son to pay the price of their sins. Our Father and the Savior see those converts as tender lambs, purchased with a price we cannot fathom.
A mortal parent may appreciate, in some small way, the feelings of a loving Heavenly Father. When our children come to the age when they must leave our direct care, we feel anxiety for their safety and concern that those who are to help them will not fail them. We can feel at least some of the Father’s and the Savior’s love for the new members of the Church and the trust They place in us to nourish.
Those feelings in our hearts for the new members will go far to qualify us for the help of the Spirit and thus overcome the fears that may deter us from our sacred responsibility. It is wise to fear that our own skills are inadequate to meet the charge we have to nourish the faith of others. Our own abilities, however great, will not be enough. But that realistic view of our limitations creates a humility that can lead to dependence on the Spirit and thus to power.
President Brigham Young (1801–77) told us to have courage despite our weaknesses: “In addressing a congregation, though the speaker be unable to say more than half a dozen sentences, and those awkwardly constructed, if his heart is pure before God, those few broken sentences are of more value than the greatest eloquence without the Spirit of the Lord and of more real worth in the sight of God, angels, and all good men. In praying, though a person’s words be few and awkwardly expressed, if the heart is pure before God, that prayer will avail more than the eloquence of a Cicero [a first century b.c. Roman orator]. What does the Lord, the Father of us all, care about our mode of expression? The simple, honest heart is of more avail with the Lord than all the pomp, pride, splendor, and eloquence produced by men. When he looks upon a heart full of sincerity, integrity, and child-like simplicity, he sees a principle that will endure forever—‘That is the spirit of my own kingdom—the spirit I have given to my children.’ ”1
A child can do the things that will give us power to nourish the faith of others. Children could invite a recent convert to come with them to a meeting. Children could smile and greet a new member coming into a chapel or into a class. So can we. And as surely as we do, the Holy Ghost will be our companion. The fear of not knowing what to say and of being rejected will be taken from us. The newcomer will not appear to be a stranger to us. And the Holy Ghost will begin nourishing him or her even before we have spoken of gospel truths.
It does not require a calling more than being a member to nourish by reaching out in kindness. Those of us who have no calling to teach or to preach can nourish with the good word of God if we prepare for it. We can do it every time we speak with a new member and every time we participate in a class discussion. We need help from the Spirit to speak the words that will nourish and strengthen.
There are two great keys to inviting the Spirit to guide what words we speak as we feed others. They are the daily study of the scriptures and the prayer of faith.
The Holy Ghost will guide what we say if we study and ponder the scriptures every day. The words of the scriptures invite the Holy Spirit. The Lord said it this way: “Seek not to declare my word, but first seek to obtain my word, and then shall your tongue be loosed; then, if you desire, you shall have my Spirit and my word, yea, the power of God unto the convincing of men” (D&C 11:21). With daily study of the scriptures, we can count on this blessing even in casual conversations or in a class when we may be asked by a teacher to respond to a question. We will experience the power the Lord promised: “Neither take ye thought beforehand what ye shall say; but treasure up in your minds continually the words of life, and it shall be given you in the very hour that portion that shall be meted unto every man” (D&C 84:85).
We treasure the word of God not only by reading the words of the scriptures but by studying them. We may be nourished more by pondering a few words, allowing the Holy Ghost to make them treasures to us, than by passing quickly and superficially over whole chapters of scripture.
Just as pondering the scriptures invites the Holy Ghost, so does daily pleading in prayer. If we do not ask in prayer, He will rarely come, and without our petition, He is not likely to linger. “And the Spirit shall be given unto you by the prayer of faith; and if ye receive not the Spirit ye shall not teach” (D&C 42:14). Heartfelt, constant pleading for the companionship of the Holy Ghost, with the pure intent to nourish our Father’s children, will surely bring blessings to us and to those we love and serve.
The good word of God with which we must nourish is the simple doctrine of the gospel. We need not fear either simplicity or repetition. The Lord Himself described how that doctrine goes into the hearts of men and women to nourish them:
“This is my doctrine, and it is the doctrine which the Father hath given unto me; and I bear record of the Father, and the Father beareth record of me, and the Holy Ghost beareth record of the Father and me; and I bear record that the Father commandeth all men, everywhere, to repent and believe in me.
“And whoso believeth in me, and is baptized, the same shall be saved; and they are they who shall inherit the kingdom of God.
“And whoso believeth not in me, and is not baptized, shall be damned.
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, that this is my doctrine, and I bear record of it from the Father; and whoso believeth in me believeth in the Father also; and unto him will the Father bear record of me, for he will visit him with fire and with the Holy Ghost” (3 Nephi 11:32–35).
The Lord went on to describe those who would be nourished by that simple doctrine and so endure, those who would inherit the celestial kingdom, as those who were childlike. It takes a childlike heart to feel the promptings of the Spirit, to surrender to those commands, and to obey. That is what it takes to be nourished by the good word of God.
And that is why we can be so optimistic in our charge to nourish the new members of the Church. However much or little they knew of the doctrine, they have just submitted humbly to the ordinance of baptism and received the right to the companionship of the Holy Ghost. And so the very tenderness of their faith, which leads the Savior to refer to them as lambs, comes at a time when they have proven themselves willing to do what the Savior asks of them.
If the full requirements of their new membership are explained clearly and with love and if the opportunity to serve in the Church is extended wisely and their performance in that service judged with charity and nurtured with patient encouragement, they will be strengthened by the companionship of the Holy Ghost, and then they will be nurtured by power beyond our own. As they endure, even the gates of hell will not prevail against them.
President Brigham Young made the promise of how their strength to stand would grow: “Those who humble themselves before the Lord, and wait upon him with a perfect heart and willing mind, will receive little by little, line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little, ‘now and again,’ as [Brother] John Taylor says, until they receive a certain amount. Then they have to nourish and cherish what they receive, and make it their constant companion, encouraging every good thought, doctrine and principle, and doing every good work they can perform, until by and bye the Lord is in them a well of water springing up unto everlasting life.”2
That is what it means in Moroni when it says, “Relying alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their faith” (Moroni 6:4). It is the Savior who made possible our being purified through His Atonement and our obedience to His commandments. And it is the Savior who will nourish those who go down in faith into the waters of baptism and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. When they always remember Him and when they continue in childlike obedience, it is He who will ensure that they have His Spirit always to be with them.
You and I can and will by small means be part of a great work. We will study and pray and serve to qualify for the companionship of the Holy Ghost. We will then be allowed to see the new members as precious, beloved children of our Heavenly Father, and we will be led to nourish them with love, with opportunity to serve, and with the good word of God. And then we will see in our own time what the great missionary Ammon described to his missionary companions, just as we are now companions to the missionaries laboring across the world:
“Behold, the field was ripe, and blessed are ye, for ye did thrust in the sickle, and did reap with your might, yea, all the day long did ye labor; and behold the number of your sheaves! And they shall be gathered into the garners, that they are not wasted.
“Yea, they shall not be beaten down by the storm at the last day; yea, neither shall they be harrowed up by the whirlwinds; but when the storm cometh they shall be gathered together in their place, that the storm cannot penetrate to them; yea, neither shall they be driven with fierce winds whithersoever the enemy listeth to carry them.
“But behold, they are in the hands of the Lord of the harvest, and they are his; and he will raise them up at the last day” (Alma 26:5–7).
We can by simple obedience help the Lord to take the lambs, His lambs, into His hands and take them in His arms home to their Father and our Father. I know that God will pour out the powers of heaven upon us as we join in preserving that sacred harvest of souls.
After prayerfully studying this message, share it using a method that encourages the participation of those you teach. Following are some examples:
1. After a family member reads the first three paragraphs of the message, ask the family: Why do you think the Lord fed His disciples before teaching them? How can we strengthen new members in our ward (or branch)?
2. Consider with family members some gospel doctrines that, if obeyed, would bless people they know. Discuss ways they could share or reinforce those doctrines with those people.
3. If the family you visit has children, consider showing a picture of a lamb. Ask, Why do lambs need to be watched over and cared for? Explain that people, like lambs, sometimes need help. Sharing the gospel, being a friend, or helping others through difficulties is similar to what a good shepherd does for sheep. Make a plan to help a neighbor, friend, or family member by completing a simple act of service.
