머리말
본서에서 제시하고자 하는 주제는 표제지에 나타나 있다. 본서의 저자는 예수 그리스도의 생애에 관하여 글을 쓰는 대부분의 저자들이 따르는 과정, 곧 마리아의 아기의 탄생으로부터 시작하여 감람산에서의 승천으로 끝을 맺는 과정을 택하고 있지 않다는 사실을 독자들은 쉽게 파악하게 될 것이다. 본서에서는 주님의 지상 생활에 대한 설명에 덧붙여서 전세에서의 존재, 세상의 구속주로서의 활동, 고대와 현대의 사도 시대 동안 영광되고, 승영에 이른 하나님의 아들로서의 나타나심과 계시, 주님의 재림이 가까왔다는 확증, 예견된 사건 등, 경전이 분명하게 밝히고 있는 바 모두를 낱낱이 다루고 있다.
특별한 계시를 기초로 하는 권능과 주님의 성스러운 이름을 사용할 수 있는 허락을 확실하게 증거할 수 있는 유일한 교회인 예수 그리스도 후기 성도 교회가 메시야와 그의 사명에 관한 교회의 교리를 밝혀야 한다는 것은 합당한 일이다.
본서의 저자는 교회의 관리 역원으로부터 의뢰와 임명을 받아 이 사업에 착수하였다. 집필을 끝낸 작품을 제일회장단과 십이사도 평의회가 읽고 승인하였다. 그러나 본서는 저자가 기록한 진리에 대한 저자의 개인적인 믿음과 깊은 확신을 말해주고 있다. 본서는 예수 그리스도 후기 성도 교회에서 출판된다.
현대 경전이 제공해 주는 지침뿐만 아니라 곧고 밝은 강한 빛처럼, 성경사으이 애매모호한 구절의 뜻을 명확히 밝혀주는, 현대 계시에 기초를 둔 상세한 설명이 본서의 특징이라 할 수 있다.
저자는 본서를 집필하면서 항상 성스러운 영의 임재를 느꼈으며, 독자도 같은 영을 느끼며 읽게 되기를 바란다.

본서의 제 2판은 1915년 12월에 나왔고, 제 3판은 1916년 3월에 나왔다. 제 3판에는 몇 가지 약간의 수정이 가해졌으며 주석과 참고 자료가 더 첨가되었다. 인도지에 출판된 제 5판을 포함하는 그후의 판과 현재의 판은 모두 제 3판과 동일하다.

Since it was first published in September 1915, Jesus the Christ has been a classic text on the life and ministry of the Savior. Elder Marion G. Romney has said, "One who gets the understanding, the vision, and the spirit of the resurrected Lord through a careful study of the text Jesus the Christ by Elder James E. Talmage will find that he has greatly increased his moving faith in our glorified Redeemer."
In his preface to the first edition, Elder Talmage wrote: "The author has departed from the course usually followed by writers on the Life of Jesus Christ, which course, as a rule, begins with the birth of Mary's Babe and ends with the ascension of the slain and risen Lord from Olivet. The treatment embodied in these pages, in addition to the narrative of the Lord's life in the flesh, comprises the ante-mortal existence and activities of the world's Redeemer, the revelations and personal manifestations of the glorified and exalted Son of God during the apostolic period of old and in modern times, the assured nearness of the Lord's second advent, and predicted events beyond-all so far as the Holy Scriptures make it plain.
"It is particularly congruous and appropriate that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints-the only Church that affirms authority based on specific revelation and commission to use the Lord's Holy Name as a distinctive designation-should set forth her doctrines concerning the Messiah and His mission."
