니전 8:1 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 우리는 온갖 종류의 갖가지 씨앗을 다 모았으며, 온갖 종류의 곡식 씨앗과 온갖 종류의 과일 씨앗을 모두 모았느니라. And it came to pass that we had gathered together all manner of seeds of every kind, both of grain of every kind, and also of the seeds of fruit of every kind.
니전 8:2 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 나의 부친이 광야에 머물러 계시는 동안 우리에게 말씀하여 이르되, 보라, 내가 한 꿈을 꾸었나니 달리 말하자면 내가 한 시현을 본 것이니라. And it came to pass that while my father tarried in the wilderness he spake unto us, saying: Behold, I have dreamed a dream; or, in other words, I have seen a vision.
니전 8:3 또 보라 내가 본 것으로 말미암아 니파이와 또한 샘으로 인하여 주 안에서 기뻐할 까닭을 내가 가졌나니, 이는 그들과 그들의 자손 가운데 많은 자가 구원받으리라고 생각할 만한 까닭을 내가 가졌기 때문이니라. And behold, because of the thing which I have seen, I have reason to rejoice in the Lord because of Nephi and also of Sam; for I have reason to suppose that they, and also many of their seed, will be saved.
니전 8:4 그러나 보라, 레이맨과 레뮤엘아, 너희로 인하여 내가 심히 두려워하노라. 이는 보라, 내 생각으로는 내 꿈에 내가 어둡고 황량한 광야를 보았음이라. But behold, Laman and Lemuel, I fear exceedingly because of you; for behold, methought I saw in my dream, a dark and dreary wilderness.
니전 8:5 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 내가 한 사람을 보았는데, 그가 흰 옷을 입었더니 그가 와서 내 앞에 서더라. And it came to pass that I saw a man, and he was dressed in a white robe; and he came and stood before me.
니전 8:6 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 그가 내게 말하여, 나에게 그를 따라오라 하였느니라. And it came to pass that he spake unto me, and bade me follow him.
니전 8:7 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 내가 그를 따라가다가, 나 자신이 어둡고 황량한 황무지에 있음을 알았느니라. And it came to pass that as I followed him I beheld myself that I was in a dark and dreary waste.
니전 8:8 또 내가 어둠 속을 여러 시간 동안 여행하고 나서, 나는 주께서 그의 친절하신 자비를 좇아 내게 자비를 베풀어 주십사고 주께 간구하기 시작하였느니라. And after I had traveled for the space of many hours in darkness, I began to pray unto the Lord that he would have mercy on me, according to the multitude of his tender mercies.
니전 8:9 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 주께 기도하고 나서 나는 크고 광활한 벌판을 보았느니라. And it came to pass after I had prayed unto the Lord I beheld a large and spacious field.
니전 8:10 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 나는 사람을 행복하게 해 줄 만큼 먹음직한 열매가 달린 나무 한 그루를 보았느니라. And it came to pass that I beheld a tree, whose fruit was desirable to make one happy.
니전 8:11 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 내가 나아가서 그 나무의 열매를 먹어 보고는, 그 열매가 지극히 감미로워 내가 이전에 맛본 그 어느 것보다도 더 감미로움을 알았느니라. 또한 나는 그 열매가 희되, 내가 이제까지 본 흰 것 가운데 그 어느 것보다 더 희다는 것을 알았느니라. And it came to pass that I did go forth and partake of the fruit thereof; and I beheld that it was most sweet, above all that I ever before tasted. Yea, and I beheld that the fruit thereof was white, to exceed all the whiteness that I had ever seen.
니전 8:12 또 내가 그 나무의 열매를 먹으매, 그것이 나의 영혼을 심히 큰 기쁨으로 가득 채워 주는지라. 나는 나의 가족들도 역시 그 열매를 먹기를 간절히 바라게 되었나니, 이는 그 열매가 다른 어떤 열매보다 더 먹음직한 줄을 내가 알았음이라. And as I partook of the fruit thereof it filled my soul with exceedingly great joy; wherefore, I began to be desirous that my family should partake of it also; for I knew that it was desirable above all other fruit.
니전 8:13 그리하여 나는 혹시 나의 가족들을 또한 발견할 수 있을까 하여, 내 눈을 들어 주위를 둘러보다가 물이 흐르는 강을 하나 보았나니, 그 강은 흘러가며 내가 열매를 먹고 있던 나무 가까이에 있더라. And as I cast my eyes round about, that perhaps I might discover my family also, I beheld a river of water; and it ran along, and it was near the tree of which I was partaking the fruit.
니전 8:14 이에 나는 그 강이 어디서 흘러 오는지 보려고 살피다가, 조금 떨어진 곳에 그 강의 발원지를 보았고, 그 강의 발원지에서 너희 어머니 새라이아와 샘과 니파이를 보았는데 그들은 마치 어디로 가야 할지 모르는듯 서 있더라. And I looked to behold from whence it came; and I saw the head thereof a little way off; and at the head thereof I beheld your mother Sariah, and Sam, and Nephi; and they stood as if they knew not whither they should go.
니전 8:15 이에 이렇게 되었나니 내가 그들에게 손짓하고 또 그들에게 큰 목소리로 이르기를, 내게로 와서 다른 어떤 열매보다 더 먹음직한 열매를 먹으라 하였느니라. And it came to pass that I beckoned unto them; and I also did say unto them with a loud voice that they should come unto me, and partake of the fruit, which was desirable above all other fruit.
니전 8:16 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 내게로 와서 그들도 그 열매를 먹었느니라. And it came to pass that they did come unto me and partake of the fruit also.
니전 8:17 또 이렇게 되었나니 나는 레이맨과 레뮤엘도 와서 그 열매를 먹기를 바라, 혹 그들을 볼 수 있을까 하여 강의 발원지를 향하여 나의 눈길을 던졌느니라. And it came to pass that I was desirous that Laman and Lemuel should come and partake of the fruit also; wherefore, I cast mine eyes towards the head of the river, that perhaps I might see them.
니전 8:18 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 내가 그들을 보았으나, 그들은 내게로 와서 그 열매를 먹으려 하지 아니하였느니라. And it came to pass that I saw them, but they would not come unto me and partake of the fruit.
니전 8:19 또 나는 쇠막대를 하나 보았는데, 그것은 강둑을 따라 뻗어 있었으며 내 곁에 서 있는 나무에 이르더라. And I beheld a rod of iron, and it extended along the bank of the river, and led to the tree by which I stood.
니전 8:20 또한 나는 이 쇠막대를 따라 내 곁에 서 있는 나무에까지 이르는, 한 협착하고 좁은 길을 보았나니, 이 길은 또한 강의 발원지 곁을 지나서, 마치 하나의 세상이기나 한 듯한 크고 광활한 벌판으로 이어지더라. And I also beheld a strait and narrow path, which came along by the rod of iron, even to the tree by which I stood; and it also led by the head of the fountain, unto a large and spacious field, as if it had been a world.
니전 8:21 또 나는 무수한 사람의 무리를 보았는데, 그들 가운데 많은 이가 내 곁에 서 있는 나무에 이르는 길에 들어서려고 앞으로 밀고 나아오더라. And I saw numberless concourses of people, many of whom were pressing forward, that they might obtain the path which led unto the tree by which I stood.
니전 8:22 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 그들은 앞으로 나아와, 나무에 이르는 길에 들어서서 나아가기 시작하더라. And it came to pass that they did come forth, and commence in the path which led to the tree.
니전 8:23 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 어둠의 안개가 일어나매, 참으로 심히 큰 어둠의 안개라. 그로 인해 그 길에 들어섰던 자들이 길을 잃더니, 방황하며, 멀어지다가, 잃어버린 바 되더라. And it came to pass that there arose a mist of darkness; yea, even an exceedingly great mist of darkness, insomuch that they who had commenced in the path did lose their way, that they wandered off and were lost.
니전 8:24 또 이렇게 되었나니 나는 다른 이들이 앞으로 밀고 나아옴을 보았나니, 그들이 나아와서 쇠막대의 끝을 붙잡더라. 또 그들은 쇠막대를 꼭 붙든 채 밀고 나아가 어둠의 안개를 지나가더니 마침내 나아와 나무의 열매를 먹더라. And it came to pass that I beheld others pressing forward, and they came forth and caught hold of the end of the rod of iron; and they did press forward through the mist of darkness, clinging to the rod of iron, even until they did come forth and partake of the fruit of the tree.
니전 8:25 또 그들은 그 나무의 열매를 먹은 후, 마치 부끄러운 듯 주위에 그들의 눈길을 던지더라. And after they had partaken of the fruit of the tree they did cast their eyes about as if they were ashamed.
니전 8:26 이에 나 또한 내 눈길을 던져 주위를 둘러보고는, 물이 흐르는 강 저편에 크고 넓은 건물 하나를 보았나니, 그것은 땅 위 높이, 말하자면 공중에 서 있더라. And I also cast my eyes round about, and beheld, on the other side of the river of water, a great and spacious building; and it stood as it were in the air, high above the earth.
니전 8:27 또 그 건물은 사람들, 곧 늙은이와 젊은이, 남자와 여자들로 가득차 있었으며, 저들의 옷차림은 심히 훌륭하였고, 저들은 열매에 이르러서 먹고 있는 자들을 향하여 손가락질하며 조롱하는 태도였느니라. And it was filled with people, both old and young, both male and female; and their manner of dress was exceedingly fine; and they were in the attitude of mocking and pointing their fingers towards those who had come at and were partaking of the fruit.
니전 8:28 이에 그들이 열매를 맛본 후 그들을 비웃는 자들로 인하여 부끄러워하더니, 금단의 길로 떨어져 나가서는 잃어 버린 바 되더라. And after they had tasted of the fruit they were ashamed, because of those that were scoffing at them; and they fell away into forbidden paths and were lost.
니전 8:29 또 이제 나 니파이는 나의 부친의 말씀을 모두 다 이야기하지는 아니하노라. And now I, Nephi, do not speak all the words of my father.
니전 8:30 그러나 간략히 쓰자면, 보라, 부친은 또 다른 수많은 무리가 앞으로 밀고 나아옴을 보셨나니, 그들이 와서 쇠막대의 끝을 붙잡았더라. 또 그들은 쇠막대를 계속하여 굳게 잡은 채 앞으로 밀고 나아오더니, 드디어 나아와 엎드러져서 나무의 열매를 먹었느니라. But, to be short in writing, behold, he saw other multitudes pressing forward; and they came and caught hold of the end of the rod of iron; and they did press their way forward, continually holding fast to the rod of iron, until they came forth and fell down and partook of the fruit of the tree.
니전 8:31 그리고 부친은 다른 수많은 무리가 저 크고 넓은 건물을 향해서 길을 더듬어 가는 것을 또한 보셨더라. And he also saw other multitudes feeling their way towards that great and spacious building.
니전 8:32 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 많은 자가 깊은 물에 빠져 죽었으며, 많은 자가 이상한 길에서 방황하다가 그의 시야에서 사라져 버렸더라. And it came to pass that many were drowned in the depths of the fountain; and many were lost from his view, wandering in strange roads.
니전 8:33 또 저 이상한 건물로 들어간 무리가 심히 많았는데, 그들이 그 건물에 들어간 후에 그들은 나와 나처럼 열매를 먹고 있는 자들에게 멸시하는 손가락질을 하였느니라. 그러나 우리는 그들에게 주의를 기울이지 아니하였느니라. And great was the multitude that did enter into that strange building. And after they did enter into that building they did point the finger of scorn at me and those that were partaking of the fruit also; but we heeded them not.
니전 8:34 나의 부친의 말씀이 이러하니라, 이는 그들에게 주의를 기울인 자마다 모두 떨어져 나갔음이라. These are the words of my father: For as many as heeded them, had fallen away.
니전 8:35 그리고 레이맨과 레뮤엘은 열매를 먹지 아니하였도다, 나의 부친께서 말씀하셨느니라. And Laman and Lemuel partook not of the fruit, said my father.
니전 8:36 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 나의 부친께서 그의 꿈 곧 시현에 관한 많은 말씀을 모두 하시고 나서, 그가 시현에서 보신 일들로 인해 레이맨과 레뮤엘로 말미암아 심히 두려워하노라고 우리에게 말씀하셨나니, 참으로 그는 그들이 주의 면전에서 쫓겨나지나 않을까 두려워하셨느니라. And it came to pass after my father had spoken all the words of his dream or vision, which were many, he said unto us, because of these things which he saw in a vision, he exceedingly feared for Laman and Lemuel; yea, he feared lest they should be cast off from the presence of the Lord.
니전 8:37 그리하여 부친은 그들이 그의 말씀에 귀 기울이도록, 혹 주께서 그들에게 자비를 베푸사 그들을 쫓아 내지 않으시도록, 애정 깊은 부모의 정감을 다하여 그때 그들을 권면하였나니, 진실로 나의 부친은 그들에게 가르침을 베푸셨느니라. And he did exhort them then with all the feeling of a tender parent, that they would hearken to his words, that perhaps the Lord would be merciful to them, and not cast them off; yea, my father did preach unto them.
니전 8:38 또 그들에게 가르침을 베푸시고 또한 그들에게 많은 것을 예언하시고 난 후, 그들에게 주의 계명을 지키라고 하시고는 그들에게 말씀하기를 그치셨느니라. And after he had preached unto them, and also prophesied unto them of many things, he bade them to keep the commandments of the Lord; and he did cease speaking unto them.
