Moroni writes for the benefit of the Lamanites—The Nephites who will not deny Christ are put to death. [Between A.D. 400 and 421]

1:1 이제 나 모로나이는 야렛 백성의 기사를 요약하기를 마친 후에 내가 더 기록하리라고는 생각하지 아니하였으나, 내가 아직은 죽지 아니하였고, 또 나는 레이맨인들이 나를 멸할까 하여 그들에게 나를 알리지 아니하노라.

  1 Now I, Moroni, after having made an end of abridging the account of the people of Jared, I had supposed not to have written more, but I have not as yet perished; and I make not myself known to the Lamanites lest they should destroy me.

1:2 이는 보라, 그들의 전쟁은 그들끼리 심히 격렬하며, 그들의 증오로 말미암아 그들은 그리스도를 부인하려 아니하는 모든 니파이인을 죽임이라.

  2 For behold, their wars are exceedingly fierce among themselves; and because of their hatred they put to death every Nephite that will not deny the Christ.

1:3 그러나 나 모로나이는 그리스도를 부인하지 아니할 것인즉, 그러므로 나는 내 생명의 안전을 위하여 어디든지 내가 갈 수 있는 곳으로 헤매노라.

  3 And I, Moroni, will not deny the Christ; wherefore, I wander whithersoever I can for the safety of mine own life.

1:4 그러한즉 내가 생각했던 것과는 달리 몇 가지를 더 기록하노니, 이는 내가 더 기록할 것으로는 생각하지 아니하였었음이라. 그러나 내가 몇 가지를 더 기록하노니, 혹 이것이 주의 뜻을 좇아 장차 언젠가 나의 형제 레이맨인들에게 가치 있는 것이 되게 하려 함이라.

  4 Wherefore, I write a few more things, contrary to that which I had supposed; for I had supposed not to have written any more; but I write a few more things, that perhaps they may be of worth unto my brethren, the Lamanites, in some future day, according to the will of the Lord.

2:1 그리스도께서 그들의 제자들 곧 그 택하신 열둘에게 그 손을 얹으셨을 때 하신 말씀이라 -

  1 The words of Christ, which he spake unto his disciples, the twelve whom he had chosen, as he laid his hands upon them-

2:2 또 저희의 이름을 부르시며 이르시되, 너희는 간절한 기도로 내 이름으로 아버지를 부를지니, 너희가 이렇게 한 후에는 너희가 안수하는 자에게 성신을 줄 권능을 갖게 되리라. 또 내 이름으로 너희는 이를 줄지니, 이는 그와 같이 나의 사도들이 행함이니라.

  2 And he called them by name, saying: Ye shall call on the Father in my name, in mighty prayer; and after ye have done this ye shall have power that to him upon whom ye shall lay your hands, ye shall give the Holy Ghost; and in my name shall ye give it, for thus do mine apostles.

2:3 이제 그리스도께서 첫 번째 나타나셨을 때 그들에게 이 말씀을 하셨나니, 무리는 이를 듣지 못하였으되, 제자들은 이를 들었으며, 그들이 안수하는 자에게는 모두 성신이 내리셨느니라.

  3 Now Christ spake these words unto them at the time of his first appearing; and the multitude heard it not, but the disciples heard it; and on as many as they laid their hands, fell the Holy Ghost.

Elders ordain priests and teachers by the laying on of hands. [Between A.D. 400 and 421]

3:1 교회의 장로라 일컫는 제자들이 제사와 교사를 성임한 방법이라 -

  1 The manner which the disciples, who were called the elders of the church, ordained priests and teachers-

3:2 그들이 그리스도의 이름으로 아버지께 기도한 후에 그 손을 저들에게 얹고 이르되,

  2 After they had prayed unto the Father in the name of Christ, they laid their hands upon them, and said:

3:3 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 나는 그대를 제사로 성임하노라. (또는 만일 교사이면 나는 그대를 교사로 성임하노라) 이는 회개와 예수 그리스도를 통하여, 끝까지 그의 이름을 믿는 신앙으로 말미암아 얻는 죄사함을 전파하기 위함이니라. 아멘.

  3 In the name of Jesus Christ I ordain you to be a priest, (or, if he be a teacher) I ordain you to be a teacher, to preach repentance and remission of sins through Jesus Christ, by the endurance of faith on his name to the end. Amen.

3:4 이러한 방법으로 그들은 사람들에게 주시는 하나님의 은사와 부르심을 좇아 제사와 교사를 성임하되, 그들은 그들 안에 있는 성신의 권능으로써 저들을 성임하였더라.

  4 And after this manner did they ordain priests and teachers, according to the gifts and callings of God unto men; and they ordained them by the power of the Holy Ghost, which was in them.

How the elders and priests administer the sacramental bread. [Between A.D. 400 and 421]

4:1 그들의 장로와 제사들이 그리스도의 살과 피를 교회에 베푼 방식이니, 그들이 그리스도의 계명을 좇아 이를 베푼지라, 그러므로 우리는 이 방식이 참된 줄 아노라. 이에 장로 또는 제사가 이를 베풀되 -

  1 The manner of their elders and priests administering the flesh and blood of Christ unto the church; and they administered it according to the commandments of Christ; wherefore we know the manner to be true; and the elder or priest did minister it-

4:2 그들이 교회로 더불어 무릎을 꿇고, 그리스도의 이름으로 아버지께 기도하여 이르되,

  2 And they did kneel down with the church, and pray to the Father in the name of Christ, saying:

4:3 오 하나님, 영원하신 아버지시여, 우리는 당신의 아들 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 당신에게 비옵나니, 이 떡을 취하는 모든 사람의 영혼을 위하여 이 떡을 축복하시며 성결하게 하시옵소서. 그리하여 저희가 당신 아들의 몸을 기억하여 먹게 하시옵고, 오 하나님, 영원하신 아버지시여, 또한 저희가 기꺼이 당신 아들의 이름을 받들며, 항상 그를 기억하고, 그가 저희에게 주신 계명을 지키고자 함을 당신에게 증거하게 하시오며, 그리하여 저희가 항상 그의 영과 함께 하도록 하시옵소서. 아멘.

  3 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it; that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him, and keep his commandments which he hath given them, that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.

5:1 포도주를 베푸는 방식이라 - 보라 그들이 잔을 들고 이르되,

  1 The manner of administering the wine-Behold, they took the cup, and said:

5:2 오 하나님, 영원하신 아버지시여, 우리는, 당신의 아들 예수 그리스도의 이름으로, 당신에게 비옵나니, 이 포도주를 마시는 모든 사람의 영혼을 위하여 이 포도주를 축복하시며 성결하게 하시옵소서, 그리하여 저희가, 저희를 위하여 흘리신, 당신 아들의 피를 기억하여 이 포도주를 마시게 하시옵고, 오 하나님, 영원하신 아버지시여, 또한 저희가 항상 그를 기억함을 당신에게 증거하게 하시오며, 그리하여 저희가 그의 영과 함께 하도록 하시옵소서. 아멘.

  2 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee, in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this wine to the souls of all those who drink of it, that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of thy Son, which was shed for them; that they may witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they do always remember him, that they may have his Spirit to be with them. 6:1 그리고 이제 내가 침례에 관하여 말하노라. 보라, 장로, 제사, 그리고 교사들이 침례를 받았으되, 그에 합당한 열매를 맺음이 없이 침례 받지 아니하였느니라.

  1 And now I speak concerning baptism. Behold, elders, priests, and teachers were baptized; and they were not baptized save they brought forth fruit meet that they were worthy of it.

6:2 누구라도 상한 마음과 통회하는 심령으로 나아와, 진실로 그들의 모든 죄를 회개하였음을 교회에 증거하지 아니하면, 그들을 받아들여 침례를 받게 하니하였느니라.

  2 Neither did they receive any unto baptism save they came forth with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, and witnessed unto the church that they truly repented of all their sins.

6:3 또 아무라도 그리스도의 이름을 받들며 끝까지 그를 섬길 결심을 하지 아니하면, 받아들여져 침례를 받지 못하였느니라.

  3 And none were received unto baptism save they took upon them the name of Christ, having a determination to serve him to the end.

6:4 또 그들이 받아들여져 침례를 받고 성신의 권능으로 역사함을 받아 정결하게 된 후에는, 그리스도의 교회 백성 가운데 헤아림을 받았고, 그들을 기억하며 하나님의 선하신 말씀으로 양육하여 그들을 바른 길에 있도록 지키며 그들로 하여금 쉬지 않고 기도하게 하며 그들의 신앙의 창시자시요 완성자이신 그리스도의 공덕만을 의지하도록 하려 하여 그들의 이름을 취하였느니라.

  4 And after they had been received unto baptism, and were wrought upon and cleansed by the power of the Holy Ghost, they were numbered among the people of the church of Christ; and their names were taken, that they might be remembered and nourished by the good word of God, to keep them in the right way, to keep them continually watchful unto prayer, relying alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their faith.

6:5 또 교회는 금식하고 기도하며, 그들의 영혼의 복리에 관하여 서로 말하기 위하여 자주 함께 모였느니라.

  5 And the church did meet together oft, to fast and to pray, and to speak one with another concerning the welfare of their souls.

6:6 또 교회는 주 예수를 기억하여, 떡과 포도주를 취하기 위하여 자주 함께 모였느니라.

  6 And they did meet together oft to partake of bread and wine, in remembrance of the Lord Jesus.

6:7 또 그들 중에 죄악이 있지 못하도록 엄격히 주시하였고, 누구든지 죄악을 범함이 드러나면, 교회의 증인 셋이 장로들 앞에서 그들을 정죄하되, 만일 그들이 회개하지 아니하고, 자백하지 아니하면, 그들의 이름이 지워져, 그들은 그리스도의 백성 가운데 헤아림을 받지 못하였느니라.

  7 And they were strict to observe that there should be no iniquity among them; and whoso was found to commit iniquity, and three witnesses of the church did condemn them before the elders, and if they repented not, and confessed not, their names were blotted out, and they were not numbered among the people of Christ.

6:8 그러나 그들이 진정으로, 회개하고 용서를 구할 때마다, 그들은 용서를 얻었느니라.

  8 But as oft as they repented and sought forgiveness, with real intent, they were forgiven.

6:9 또 그들의 모임은 교회에 의하여 영의 역사하심을 따라 성신의 권능으로 인도되었나니, 이는 성신의 권능이 그들을 인도하여, 혹 가르치거나, 또는 권면하거나, 또는 기도하거나, 또는 간구하거나, 또는 노래하게 하는 대로 그와 같이 행하여졌느니라.

  9 And their meetings were conducted by the church after the manner of the workings of the Spirit, and by the power of the Holy Ghost; for as the power of the Holy Ghost led them whether to preach, or to exhort, or to pray, or to supplicate, or to sing, even so it was done.

7:1 그리고 이제 나 모로나이는 신앙, 소망, 그리고 사랑에 관하여 말씀하신 나의 부친 몰몬의 말씀 가운데 몇 가지를 기록하노니, 이는 그가 백성들이 예배의 장소로 지은 회당에서 그들을 가르치실 때에 이같이 그들에게 말씀하셨음이라.

  1 And now I, Moroni, write a few of the words of my father Mormon, which he spake concerning faith, hope, and charity; for after this manner did he speak unto the people, as he taught them in the synagogue which they had built for the place of worship.

7:2 그리고 이제 나 몰몬은 너희 내 사랑하는 형제들에게 말하노니, 내가 이때에 너희에게 말하도록 허락을 받은 것은 하나님 아버지의 은혜와, 우리 주 예수 그리스도와, 내게 주신 그의 부르심의 은사로 인한 그의 거룩하신 뜻으로 말미암은 것이니라.

  2 And now I, Mormon, speak unto you, my beloved brethren; and it is by the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, and his holy will, because of the gift of his calling unto me, that I am permitted to speak unto you at this time.

7:3 그런즉 나는 교회에 속하여 있으며, 화평한 중에 그리스도를 따르는 자로서, 이때로부터 하늘에서 그와 함께 안식하게 될 때까지 주의 안식에 들어갈 수 있는 넉넉한 소망을 얻은 너희에게 말하고자 하노라.

  3 Wherefore, I would speak unto you that are of the church, that are the peaceable followers of Christ, and that have obtained a sufficient hope by which ye can enter into the rest of the Lord, from this time henceforth until ye shall rest with him in heaven.

7:4 또 이제 나의 형제들아, 너희가 사람의 자녀들과 더불어 화평한 중에 행함으로 인하여 내가 너희에 대하여 이 일을 판단하노라.

  4 And now my brethren, I judge these things of you because of your peaceable walk with the children of men.

7:5 이는 그들의 행위로 그들을 알 것이라 하시는 하나님의 말씀을 내가 기억함이라. 이는 만일 그들의 행위가 선할진대 그들도 선함이니라.

  5 For I remember the word of God which saith by their works ye shall know them; for if their works be good, then they are good also.

7:6 이는 보라,  하나님께서 말씀하시기를 사람이 악하면서 선을 행할 수 없다 하셨음이니, 만일 그가 하나님께 예물을 바치거나, 기도한다 할지라도 이를 진정한 의도를 가지고 행하지 아니하면 그에게 아무 유익이 되지 못함이니라.

  6 For behold, God hath said a man being evil cannot do that which is good; for if he offereth a gift, or prayeth unto God, except he shall do it with real intent it profiteth him nothing.

7:7 이는 보라, 그것이 그에게 의로 여김이 되지 아니함이니라.

  7 For behold, it is not counted unto him for righteousness.

7:8 보라, 사람이 악하면서 예물을 드리면, 마지못하여 그렇게 함이라. 그리하여 마치 예물을 드리지 아니한 것처럼 그에게 여겨지나니, 그런즉 그는 하나님 앞에 악한 것으로 여김을 받느니라.

  8 For behold, if a man being evil giveth a gift, he doeth it grudgingly; wherefore it is counted unto him the same as if he had retained the gift; wherefore he is counted evil before God.

7:9 또 마찬가지로 만일 사람이 기도하되 마음의 진정한 의도를 가지고 그리하지 아니할진대, 그것 또한 그에게 간악한 것으로 여김이 되며, 그뿐 아니라 그것이 그에게 아무 유익이 되지 못하나니, 이는 하나님께서 그러한 자는 하나도 맏으시지 아니하심이라.

  9 And likewise also is it counted evil unto a man, if he shall pray and not with real intent of heart; yea, and it profiteth him nothing, for God receiveth none such.

7:10 그러므로 사람이 악하면서 선을 행할 수 없고, 그는 선한 예물을 드리지도 아니하리라.

  10 Wherefore, a man being evil cannot do that which is good; neither will he give a good gift.

7:11 이는 보라, 쓴 샘이 좋은 물을 낼 수 없고, 좋은 샘이 쓴 물을 낼 수 없음이라. 그런즉 사람이 악마의 종이 되어 그리스도를 따를 수 없고, 그가 만일 그리스도를 따르면 그는 악마의 종이 될 수 없도다.

  11 For behold, a bitter fountain cannot bring forth good water; neither can a good fountain bring forth bitter water; wherefore, a man being a servant of the devil cannot follow Christ; and if he follow Christ he cannot be a servant of the devil.

7:12 그런즉 무릇 선한 일은 모두 하나님으로부터 오며, 악한 것은 악마에게서 오나니, 이는 악마가 하나님의 원수요, 끊임없이 하나님을 대적하여 싸우며, 또 죄를 범하도록 또 끊임없이 악을 행하도록 꾀며 유혹함이라.

  12 Wherefore, all things which are good cometh of God; and that which is evil cometh of the devil; for the devil is an enemy unto God, and fighteth against him continually, and inviteth and enticeth to sin, and to do that which is evil continually.

7:13 그러나 보라, 하나님께 속한 것은 끊임없이 선을 행하도록 이끌며 권유하나니, 그러므로 무릇 선을 행하도록 하며, 하나님을 사랑하고, 그를 섬기도록 이끌며 권유하는 것은 모두 하나님의 영감으로 말미암은 것이니라.

  13 But behold, that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God.

7:14 그러므로 내 사랑하는 형제들아, 너희는 삼가 악한 것을 하나님께 속한 것이라, 또는 선하고 하나님께 속한 것을 악마에게 속한 것이라 판단하지 않도록 주의하라.

  14 Wherefore, take heed, my beloved brethren, that ye do not judge that which is evil to be of God, or that which is good and of God to be of the devil.

7:15 이는 보라, 나의 형제들아, 판단할 수 있는 능력이 너희에게 주어져 너희로 선악을 분별하게 하였음이요, 또 판단하는 길은 어두운 밤과 낮의 빛을 구별함같이 명백하여 너희가 완전한 지식으로 알 수 있음이니라.

  15 For behold, my brethren, it is given unto you to judge, that ye may know good from evil; and the way to judge is as plain, that ye may know with a perfect knowledge, as the daylight is from the dark night.

7:16 이는 보라, 그리스도의 영이 모든 사람에게 주어져 선악을 분별하게 하였은즉, 그러므로 내가 너희에게 판단하는 길을 보여 주노니, 무릇 선을 행하도록 권유하며, 권하여 그리스도를 믿도록 설득하는 것은, 모두 그리스도의 권능과 은사로 말미암아 보냄을 받은 것이라, 그런즉 너희는 그것이 하나님께 속한 것인 줄을 완전한 지식으로 알지니라.

  16 For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God.

7:17 그러나 무엇이라도 사람들을 설득하여 악을 행하게 하며, 그리스도를 믿지 않게 하고, 그를 부인하게 하며, 하나님을 섬기지 않게 하는 것이면, 너희는 그것이 악마에게 속한 것인 줄을 완전한 지식으로 알지니라. 이는 실로 이러한 방식으로 악마가 일함이니, 이는 그가 아무도, 실로 단 한 사람도 설득하여 선을 행하게 아니하며, 그의 사자들도 그러하며, 그에게 복종하는 자들도 그러함이라.

  17 But whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil; for after this manner doth the devil work, for he persuadeth no man to do good, no, not one; neither do his angels; neither do they who subject themselves unto him.

7:18 이에 이제 나의 형제들아, 너희가 판단할 수 있는 빛, 곧 그리스도의 빛을 알고 있은즉, 너희가 잘못 판단하지 않도록 주의하라. 이는 너희가 판단하는 바로 그 판단으로 너희가 또한 판단을 받을 것임이니라.

  18 And now, my brethren, seeing that ye know the light by which ye may judge, which light is the light of Christ, see that ye do not judge wrongfully; for with that same judgment which ye judge ye shall also be judged.

7:19 그런즉 형제들아, 내가 너희에게 구하노니, 너희는 그리스도의 빛으로 부지런히 탐구하여 선악을 분별할 수 있도록 할지니, 만일 너희가 모든 선한 것을 붙잡으며, 그것을 정죄하지 아니할진대, 너희는 분명히 그리스도의 자녀가 될 것이니라.

  19 Wherefore, I beseech of you, brethren, that ye should search diligently in the light of Christ that ye may know good from evil; and if ye will lay hold upon every good thing, and condemn it not, ye certainly will be a child of Christ.

7:20 그러면 이제 나의 형제들아, 너희가 모든 선한 것을 붙잡을 수 있음이 어떻게 가능하냐?

  20 And now, my brethren, how is it possible that ye can lay hold upon every good thing?

7:21 이에 이제 나는 내가 말하겠다 한 저 신앙에 이르러, 너희가 모든 선한 것을 붙잡을 수 있는 길을 너희에게 말해 주리라.

  21 And now I come to that faith, of which I said I would speak; and I will tell you the way whereby ye may lay hold on every good thing.

7:22 대저 보라, 하나님은 모든 것을 아시며, 영원으로부터 영원에 이르기까지 계시나니, 보라, 그가 천사들을 보내사 사람의 자녀들에게 성역을 베풀게 하시며, 그리스도의 오심에 관하여서와, 그리스도로 말미암아 모든 선한 일이 임할 것을 드러내게 하셨느니라.

  22 For behold, God knowing all things, being from everlasting to everlasting, behold, he sent angels to minister unto the children of men, to make manifest concerning the coming of Christ; and in Christ there should come every good thing.

7:23 또한 하나님은 친히 그 입으로, 그리스도가 올 것을 선지자들에게 선포하셨느니라.

  23 And God also declared unto prophets, by his own mouth, that Christ should come.

7:24 또 보라, 그가 사람의 자녀들에게 선한 일을 나타내시는 길이 여러가지 있었어도 선한 모든 것은 그리스도에게서 오나니, 그렇지 아니하면 사람들은 타락한 고로 저희에게 선한 것이 아무것도 임할 수 없으리로다.

  24 And behold, there were divers ways that he did manifest things unto the children of men, which were good; and all things which are good cometh of Christ; otherwise men were fallen, and there could no good thing come unto them.

7:25 그리하여 천사들의 성역으로 말미암아, 또 하나님의 입에서 나아오는 모든 말씀으로 말미암아, 사람들은 그리스도를 믿는 신앙을 행사하기 시작하였고, 그리하여 신앙으로 말미암아 저희가 모든 선한 것을 붙잡았으니 그리스도가 오실 때까지 그러하였느니라.

  25 Wherefore, by the ministering of angels, and by every word which proceeded forth out of the mouth of God, men began to exercise faith in Christ; and thus by faith, they did lay hold upon every good thing; and thus it was until the coming of Christ.

7:26 또 그가 오신 후에도 사람들은 그의 이름을 믿는 신앙으로 구원을 받았고, 신앙으로 저희가 하나님의 아들들이 되나니, 그리스도께서 살아 계심같이 분명히 그는 우리 조상들에게 이 말씀을 하셨느니라. 이르시되, 너희가 받을 줄로 믿으며 신앙으로 무엇이든지 선한 것을 내 이름으로 아버지께 구하는 것은, 보라, 너희에게 이루어지리라 하셨느니라.

  26 And after that he came men also were saved by faith in his name; and by faith, they become the sons of God. And as surely as Christ liveth he spake these words unto our fathers, saying: Whatsoever thing ye shall ask the Father in my name, which is good, in faith believing that ye shall receive, behold, it shall be done unto you.

7:27 그런즉 내 사랑하는 형제들아, 그리스도께서 하늘에 올라 하나님의 우편에 앉으사 사람의 자녀들에 대하여 지니신 그의 자비의 권한을 아버지께 주장함으로 인하여 기적이 그쳤느냐?

  27 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, have miracles ceased because Christ hath ascended into heaven, and hath sat down on the right hand of God, to claim of the Father his rights of mercy which he hath upon the children of men?

7:28 대저 그는 율법의 목적에 부응하셨고, 그를 믿는 모든 자를 자기 것으로 주장하시며, 그를 믿는 자들은 모든 선한 것을 굳게 붙들 것인즉, 그러므로 그는 사람의 자녀들을 위하여 변호하시며, 영원토록 하늘에 거하시느니라.

  28 For he hath answered the ends of the law, and he claimeth all those who have faith in him; and they who have faith in him will cleave unto every good thing; wherefore he advocateth the cause of the children of men; and he dwelleth eternally in the heavens.

7:29 이에 나의 사랑하는 형제들아, 그가 이를 행하셨음으로 인하여 기적이 그쳤느냐? 보라 내가 너희에게 이르노니, 아니라. 그리고 천사들이 사람의 자녀들에게 성역을 베푸는 일도 그치지 아니하였느니라.

  29 And because he hath done this, my beloved brethren, have miracles ceased? Behold I say unto you, Nay; neither have angels ceased to minister unto the children of men.

7:30 이는 보라, 그들은 그에게 복종하여, 그의 명하시는 말씀을 좇아 성역을 베풀며, 경건의 모든 모양 중에 강한 신앙과 굳건한 마음을 지닌 자들에게 스스로를 보임이니라.

  30 For behold, they are subject unto him, to minister according to the word of his command, showing themselves unto them of strong faith and a firm mind in every form of godliness.

7:31 또 그들의 성역의 직무는 사람들을 불러 회개하게 하며, 아버지께서 사람의 자녀들에게 맺으신 바, 그의 성약을 이루고 그 성약의 일을 행하며, 그리스도의 말씀을 주의 택하신 그릇에게 선포하여, 그들로 그리스도에 대하여 증거하게 함으로써, 사람의 자녀들 가운데 길을 예비하는 것이니라.

  31 And the office of their ministry is to call men unto repentance, and to fulfil and to do the work of the covenants of the Father, which he hath made unto the children of men, to prepare the way among the children of men, by declaring the word of Christ unto the chosen vessels of the Lord, that they may bear testimony of him.

7:32 또 이렇게 하심으로써, 주 하나님께서는 나머지 사람들이 그리스도를 믿는 신앙을 갖도록 길을 예비하사, 성신이 그 권능을 좇아 그들의 마음에 있을 곳을 가지게 하시나니, 이같은 방법으로 아버지께서는 사람의 자녀들에게 맺으신 성약을 이루시느니라.

  32 And by so doing, the Lord God prepareth the way that the residue of men may have faith in Christ, that the Holy Ghost may have place in their hearts, according to the power thereof; and after this manner bringeth to pass the Father, the covenants which he hath made unto the children of men.

7:33 또 그리스도께서 말씀하시되, 만일 너희가 나를 믿는 신앙을 가지면 내게 합당한 것은 무엇이든지 다 행할 수 있는 능력을 갖게 되리라.

  33 And Christ hath said: If ye will have faith in me ye shall have power to do whatsoever thing is expedient in me.

7:34 또 이르시되, 너희 땅의 모든 끝이여, 회개하고 내게로 와서, 나의 이름으로 침례를 받고, 나를 믿는 신앙을 가지라. 그리하면 너희가 구원을 얻으리라 하셨느니라.

  34 And he hath said: Repent all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me, and be baptized in my name, and have faith in me, that ye may be saved.

7:35 이에 이제 나의 사랑하는 형제들아, 내가 너희에게 말한 이러한 것들이 참될진대, 그리고 하나님께서 이러한 것이 참됨을 마지막 날에 권능과 큰 영광으로 너희에게 보이시려니와, 만일 이러한 것이 참되다면 기적의 날이 그쳤느냐?

  35 And now, my beloved brethren, if this be the case that these things are true which I have spoken unto you, and God will show unto you, with power and great glory at the last day, that they are true, and if they are true has the day of miracles ceased?

7:36 또는 천사들이 사람의 자녀들에게 나타나기를 그쳤느냐? 또는 그가 그들에게서 성신의 권능을 거두셨느냐? 또는 시간이 지속되거나, 땅이 존속하거나, 그 위에 단 한 사람이라도 구원받을 자가 있는 한 그가 그리하시겠느냐?

  36 Or have angels ceased to appear unto the children of men? Or has he withheld the power of the Holy Ghost from them? Or will he, so long as time shall last, or the earth shall stand, or there shall be one man upon the face thereof to be saved?

7:37 보라 내가 너희에게 이르노니, 아니라. 이는 기적이 이루어지는 것이 신앙으로 말미암음이요, 천사들이 사람들에게 나타나 성역을 베푸는 것도 신앙으로 말미암음이라. 그런즉 만일 이러한 일들이 그쳤다면 사람의 자녀들에게 화 있을진저, 이는 그것이 믿지 않음으로 인함이요, 모든 것이 헛됨이라.

  37 Behold I say unto you, Nay; for it is by faith that miracles are wrought; and it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men; wherefore, if these things have ceased wo be unto the children of men, for it is because of unbelief, and all is vain.

7:38 이는 그리스도의 말씀에 따를진대, 그의 이름을 믿지 아니하고는 아무도 구원받지 못할 것임이니, 그러므로 만일 이러한 일들이 그쳤다면, 그러면 신앙이 또한 그친 것이요, 이에 사람의 상태가 참담하리니, 이는 그들이 마치 구속이 이루어지지 아니하였던 것과 같음이라.

  38 For no man can be saved, according to the words of Christ, save they shall have faith in his name; wherefore, if these things have ceased, then has faith ceased also; and awful is the state of man, for they are as though there had been no redemption made.

7:39 그러나 보라, 나의 사랑하는 형제들아, 나는 너희가 더 나은 줄로 판단하노니, 이는 너희의 온유함으로 인하여 너희가 그리스도를 믿는 줄로 내가 판단함이라. 이는 만일 너희가 그를 믿지 아니하면 너희는 그의 교회의 백성 가운데 헤아림을 받기에 합당하지 아니함이니라.

  39 But behold, my beloved brethren, I judge better things of you, for I judge that ye have faith in Christ because of your meekness; for if ye have not faith in him then ye are not fit to be numbered among the people of his church.

7:40 그리고 또 나의 사랑하는 형제들아, 내가 소망에 관하여 너희에게 말하고자 하노라. 너희가 소망을 갖지 아니하고 어찌 신앙에 이를 수 있느냐?

  40 And again, my beloved brethren, I would speak unto you concerning hope. How is it that ye can attain unto faith, save ye shall have hope?

7:41 또 너희가 바라야 할 바는 무엇이냐? 보라, 내가 너희에게 이르노니 너희는 그리스도의 속죄와 그의 부활의 능력을 통하여 영생으로 일으키심을 받으리라는 소망을 가져야 할지니, 이는 약속대로 그를 믿는 너희의 신앙으로 인한 것이니라.

  41 And what is it that ye shall hope for? Behold I say unto you that ye shall have hope through the atonement of Christ and the power of his resurrection, to be raised unto life eternal, and this because of your faith in him according to the promise.

7:42 그런즉 사람이 신앙을 가지려면 반드시 소망을 가져야만 하나니, 이는 신앙 없이는 아무 소망도 있을 수 없음이라.

  42 Wherefore, if a man have faith he must needs have hope; for without faith there cannot be any hope.

7:43 그리고 또 보라, 내가 너희에게 이르거니와 그가 온유하며 마음이 겸손하게 되지 아니하고는 신앙과 소망을 가질 수 없느니라.

  43 And again, behold I say unto you that he cannot have faith and hope, save he shall be meek, and lowly of heart.

7:44 만일 그러하면 그의 신앙과 소망은 헛것이라. 이는 온유하며 마음이 겸손한 자가 아니면 아무도 하나님 앞에 받아들여지지 아니함이라. 또 만일 사람이 온유하고 마음이 겸손하여 예수가 그리스도이심을 성신의 권능으로 시인하려면, 그는 반드시 사랑을 가져야만 하나니, 이는 만일 그에게 사랑이 없으면 그가 아무것도 아님이라. 그런즉 그는 반드시 사랑을 가져야만 하느니라.

  44 If so, his faith and hope is vain, for none is acceptable before God, save the meek and lowly in heart; and if a man be meek and lowly in heart, and confesses by the power of the Holy Ghost that Jesus is the Christ, he must needs have charity; for if he have not charity he is nothing; wherefore he must needs have charity.

7:45 그리고 사랑은 오래 참고, 친절하며, 시기하지 아니하며, 교만하지 아니하며, 자기의 것을 구하지 아니하며, 쉽게 성내지 아니하며 악한 것을 생각하지 아니하며, 불의를 기뻐하지 아니하고, 진리를 기뻐하며 모든 것을 참으며 모든 것을 믿으며 모든 것을 바라며 모든 것을 견디느니라.

  45 And charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

7:46 그런즉 나의 사랑하는 형제들아, 만일 너희에게 사랑이 없으면, 너희는 아무것도 아니니, 이는 사랑은 언제까지나 시들지 아니함이라. 그런즉 모든 것 중에 으뜸이 되는 사랑을 붙들라. 이는 모든 것이 반드시 시들되 -

  46 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all, for all things must fail-

7:47 이 사랑은 그리스도의 순수한 사랑이라. 영원히 견딤이요, 누구든지 마지막 날에 이를 지닌 것으로 드러나는 자는 잘 될 것임이니라.

  47 But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.

7:48 그런즉 내 사랑하는 형제들아, 마음의 힘을 다해 아버지께 기도하여, 그의 아들 예수 그리스도를 참되게 따르는 자 모두에게 내려주신 이 사랑으로 충만하게 되며, 너희가 하나님의 아들이 되며, 그가 나타나실 때에 그가 계신 그대로 우리가 그를 볼 것인즉, 우리가 그와 같이 되게 하며, 우리로 이 소망을 갖게 하며, 그가 순결하신 것같이 우리가 순결하게 되게 할지어다. 아멘.

  48 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this love, which he hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ; that ye may become the sons of God; that when he shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is; that we may have this hope; that we may be purified even as he is pure. Amen.

Infant baptism is an evil abomination—Little children are alive in Christ because of the atonement—Faith, repentance, meekness and lowliness of heart, receiving the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end lead to salvation. [Between A.D. 400 and 421]

8:1 나 모로나이에게 쓰신 나의 부친 몰몬의 서한이니, 내가 성역을 베풀도록 부름을 받은 후 얼마 되지 아니하여 내게 쓰신 것이요, 내게 쓰신 것이 이러하니라. 이르되,

  1 An epistle of my father Mormon, written to me, Moroni; and it was written unto me soon after my calling to the ministry. And on this wise did he write unto me, saying:

8:2 내 사랑하는 아들 모로나이야, 너의 주 예수 그리스도께서 너를 생각하시고, 그의 성역과 그의 거룩한 일을 행하도록 너를 부르셨으니, 내가 심히 기쁘도다.

  2 My beloved son, Moroni, I rejoice exceedingly that your Lord Jesus Christ hath been mindful of you, and hath called you to his ministry, and to his holy work.

8:3 내가 나의 기도 중에 항상 너를 생각하여, 하나님 아버지께 그의 거룩한 아들 예수의 이름으로 쉬지 않고 기도하며, 그가 그의 무한한 선하심과 은혜로써 끝까지 그의 이름을 믿는 신앙을 통하여 너를 지키실 것을 구하노라.

  3 I am mindful of you always in my prayers, continually praying unto God the Father in the name of his Holy Child, Jesus, that he, through his infinite goodness and grace, will keep you through the endurance of faith on his name to the end.

8:4 그리고 이제 내 아들아, 나를 심히 비통하게 하는 것에 관하여 내가 네게 말하노니, 이는 너희 중에 논쟁이 일어남은 나를 비통하게 함이라.

  4 And now, my son, I speak unto you concerning that which grieveth me exceedingly; for it grieveth me that there should disputations rise among you.

8:5 이는 내가 알게 된 바가 사실일진대, 너희 중에 너희 어린아이들의 침례에 관하여 논쟁이 있었음이니라.

  5 For, if I have learned the truth, there have been disputations among you concerning the baptism of your little children.

8:6 이에 이제 내 아들아, 나는 너희가 부지런히 일하여 이 큰 잘못이 너희에게서 제하여지게 하기를 바라노라. 이는 이 목적으로 내가 이 서한을 썼음이니라.

8:7 내가 너희에게 이러한 일이 있음을 알고 나서 즉시 그 문제에 관하여 여쭈었더니, 주의 말씀이 성신의 권능으로 내게 임하여 이르시되,

  7 For immediately after I had learned these things of you I inquired of the Lord concerning the matter. And the word of the Lord came to me by the power of the Holy Ghost, saying:

8:8 너희의 구속주, 너희의 주 너희의 하나님이신 그리스도의 말씀을 들을지어다. 보라, 내가 세상에 온 것은 의인을 부르려 함이 아니요, 죄인을 불러 회개하게 하려 함이니라. 온전한 자에게는 의원이 필요 없고 병든 자에게라야 필요 있나니, 그러므로 어린아이들은 온전하도다. 이는 그들에게 죄를 범할 능력이 없음이라. 그러므로 아담의 저주가 나로 말미암아 그들에게서 제하여져서, 그들에게 아무 힘을 미치지 못하며, 할례의 법이 나로 말미암아 폐하여졌도다 하셨느니라.

  8 Listen to the words of Christ, your Redeemer, your Lord and your God. Behold, I came into the world not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance; the whole need no physician, but they that are sick; wherefore, little children are whole, for they are not capable of committing sin; wherefore the curse of Adam is taken from them in me, that it hath no power over them; and the law of circumcision is done away in me.

8:9 이에 이와 같이 성신이 하나님의 말씀을 내게 나타내셨으니, 그러므로 내 사랑하는 아들아, 너희가 어린아이에게 침례를 줌은 하나님 앞에 중대한 조롱 행위인 줄을 내가 아노라.

8:10 볼지어다 내가 너희에게 이르노니 이것을 너희는 가르치라 - 곧 책임을 질 수 있고 죄를 범할 능력이 있는 자들에게 회개와 침례를 가르칠지니, 참으로 부모들을 가르치되 그들이 회개하고 침례를 받고, 그들의 어린아이들같이 스스로 겸손하여야 하며, 그리하면 그들이 모두 그들의 어린아이들과 함께 구원을 받으리라는 것을 가르치라.

  10 Behold I say unto you that this thing shall ye teach-repentance and baptism unto those who are accountable and capable of committing sin; yea, teach parents that they must repent and be baptized, and humble themselves as their little children, and they shall all be saved with their little children.

8:11 또 그들의 어린아이들은 회개나 침례가 필요 없나니, 보라 침례는 회개를 위한 것이요 계명을 이루어 죄 사함에 이르게 하는 것이라.

  11 And their little children need no repentance, neither baptism. Behold, baptism is unto repentance to the fulfilling the commandments unto the remission of sins.

8:12 그러나 어린아이들은 실로 세상의 기초가 놓이던 때로부터 그리스도 안에서 살아 있나니, 만일 그렇지 않다 할진대 하나님은 공평치 않으신 하나님이시요, 또한 변하시는 하나님이시요, 사람을 외모로 취하시는 분일지라. 대저 침례 없이 죽은 어린아이가 얼마나 많겠느냐?

  12 But little children are alive in Christ, even from the foundation of the world; if not so, God is a partial God, and also a changeable God, and a respecter to persons; for how many little children have died without baptism!

8:13 그런즉 만일 어린아이들이 침례 없이 구원받을 수 없다 할진대, 이들이 반드시 끝없는 지옥으로 갔을 것이라.

  13 Wherefore, if little children could not be saved without baptism, these must have gone to an endless hell.

8:14 보라 내가 너희에게 이르거니와 어린아이들에게 침례가 필요하다고 생각하는 자는 쓰디쓴 담즙에 빠져 있고 불의에 매인 바 되었나니, 이는 그에게 신앙이나 소망이나 사랑이 없음이라. 그런즉 그가 그러한 생각으로 있다가 끊어 버림을 당하면, 그는 지옥으로 내려가지 아니할 수 없느니라.

  14 Behold I say unto you, that he that supposeth that little children need baptism is in the gall of bitterness and in the bonds of iniquity; for he hath neither faith, hope, nor charity; wherefore, should he be cut off while in the thought, he must go down to hell.

8:15 이는 어떤 아이는 하나님께서 침례로 인하여 구원하시고, 어떤 아이는 침례 없음으로 인하여 반드시 멸망한다 생각하는 그 간악함이 끔찍함이라.

  15 For awful is the wickedness to suppose that God saveth one child because of baptism, and the other must perish because he hath no baptism.

8:16 이와 같이 주의 길을 굽게 할 자에게 화 있을진저, 이는 그들이 회개하지 아니할진대 멸망할 것임이라. 보라, 내가 하나님께로부터 받은 권세를 가지고 담대히 말하며, 사람이 행할 수 있는 일을 두려워하지 아니하노니, 이는 완전한 사랑이 모든 두려움을 내어 쫓음이라.

  16 Wo be unto them that shall pervert the ways of the Lord after this manner, for they shall perish except they repent. Behold, I speak with boldness, having authority from God; and I fear not what man can do; for perfect love casteth out all fear.

8:17 이에 내가 영원한 사랑인 그리스도의 사랑으로 충만하여졌노니, 그러므로 모든 아이가 내게는 다 같도다. 그리하여 내가 완전한 사랑으로 어린아이들을 사랑하노니, 그들은 다 같고 구원에 참여하는 자들이라.

  17 And I am filled with charity, which is everlasting love; wherefore, all children are alike unto me; wherefore, I love little children with a perfect love; and they are all alike and partakers of salvation.

8:18 이는 하나님은 공평치 않으신 하나님이 아니요, 변하시는 존재도 아니시며, 모든 영원에서 모든 영원까지 변하지 아니하심을 내가 앎이라.

  18 For I know that God is not a partial God, neither a changeable being; but he is unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity.

8:19 어린아이들은 회개할 수 없은즉, 그러므로 그들에게 베푸시는 하나님의 순결한 자비를 부인하는 것은 끔찍한 간악함이니, 이는 그들이 그의 자비로 인하여 그의 안에 모두 살아 있음이라.

  19 Little children cannot repent; wherefore, it is awful wickedness to deny the pure mercies of God unto them, for they are all alive in him because of his mercy.

8:20 또 어린아이들에게 침례가 필요하다고 하는 자는 그리스도의 자비를 부인하며, 그의 속죄와 그의 구속의 능력을 무시하는 자라.

  20 And he that saith that little children need baptism denieth the mercies of Christ, and setteth at naught the atonement of him and the power of his redemption.

8:21 그러한 자에게 화 있나니, 이는 그들이 죽음과 지옥과 끝없는 고통의 위험에 처해 있음이라. 내가 담대히 이를 말하노니, 하나님께서 내게 명하셨느니라. 이 말씀에 귀를 기울이고 유의하라. 그렇지 아니하면 이 말씀이 그리스도의 심판대에서 너희를 정죄하리로다.

  21 Wo unto such, for they are in danger of death, hell, and an endless torment. I speak it boldly; God hath commanded me. Listen unto them and give heed, or they stand against you at the judgment-seat of Christ.

8:22 이는 보라, 어린아이들은 모두 그리스도 안에 살아 있으며, 율법 밖에 있는 자도 모두 그러함이니, 구속의 능력이 율법을 갖지 아니한 모든 자에게 임함이라. 그런즉 정죄 받지 아니한 자, 곧 정죄 아래 있지 아니한 자는 회개할 수 없으며, 그러한 자에게 침례란 무익한 것이요 -

  22 For behold that all little children are alive in Christ, and also all they that are without the law. For the power of redemption cometh on all them that have no law; wherefore, he that is not condemned, or he that is under no condemnation, cannot repent; and unto such baptism availeth nothing-

8:23 도리어 그것은 하나님 앞에 조롱하는 행위로써 그리스도의 자비와, 그의 성령의 권능을 부인하며, 죽은 행실을 신뢰하는 일이니라.

  23 But it is mockery before God, denying the mercies of Christ, and the power of his Holy Spirit, and putting trust in dead works.

8:24 보라, 내 아들아, 이러한 일은 마땅히 있어서 아니되나니, 회개란 정죄 아래와 깨어진 율법의 저주 아래 있는 자들을 위한 것임이라.

  24 Behold, my son, this thing ought not to be; for repentance is unto them that are under condemnation and under the curse of a broken law.

8:25 그리고 회개의 첫열매는 침례요, 침례는 신앙으로 말미암아 와서 계명을 이룸에 이르며, 계명을 이룸은 죄 사함을 가져오니라.

  25 And the first fruits of repentance is baptism; and baptism cometh by faith unto the fulfilling the commandments; and the fulfilling the commandments bringeth remission of sins;

8:26 또 죄 사함은 온유함과 마음의 겸손을 가져오며, 온유함과 마음의 겸손으로 인하여 성신의 방문이 임하는 것이라. 이 보혜사는 소망과 완전한 사랑으로 채워주시나니, 부지런히 기도함으로 말미암아 이 사랑은 모든 성도가 하나님과 함께 거하게 될 때 곧 끝이 이르기까지 견디느니라.

  26 And the remission of sins bringeth meekness, and lowliness of heart; and because of meekness and lowliness of heart cometh the visitation of the Holy Ghost, which Comforter filleth with hope and perfect love, which love endureth by diligence unto prayer, until the end shall come, when all the saints shall dwell with God.

  27 Behold, my son, I will write unto you again if I go not out soon against the Lamanites. Behold, the pride of this nation, or the people of the Nephites, hath proven their destruction except they should repent.

  28 Pray for them, my son, that repentance may come unto them. But behold, I fear lest the Spirit hath ceased striving with them; and in this part of the land they are also seeking to put down all power and authority which cometh from God; and they are denying the Holy Ghost.

8:29 또 내 아들아, 그처럼 큰 지식을 저버린 후에, 그들이 반드시 곧 멸망하여 우리의 구주께서 친히 하신 말씀과 또한 선지자들로 말씀하신 예언들을 이루리라.

  29 And after rejecting so great a knowledge, my son, they must perish soon, unto the fulfilling of the prophecies which were spoken by the prophets, as well as the words of our Savior himself.

8:30 내 아들아, 내가 다시 네게 쓰든지, 아니면 다시 너를 만날 때까지 잘 있으라. 아멘.

  30 Farewell, my son, until I shall write unto you, or shall meet you again. Amen.

9:1 내 사랑하는 아들아, 내가 아직 살아 있음을 너로 알게 하려고 내가 다시 네게 쓰거니와, 내가 비통한 일에 대하여 얼마간 쓰노라.

  1 My beloved son, I write unto you again that ye may know that I am yet alive; but I write somewhat of that which is grievous.

  3 And now behold, my son, I fear lest the Lamanites shall destroy this people; for they do not repent, and Satan stirreth them up continually to anger one with another.

9:4 보라, 내가 끊임없이 그들과 함께 일하고 있으되, 내가 엄히 하나님의 말씀을 말할 때면 그들이 떨며 나에게 노를 품고, 내가 엄히 말하지 아니하면 그것에 대하여 그들의 마음을 완악하게 하니, 그러므로 나는 주의 영이 그들과 함께 애쓰시기를 그치셨을까 두려워하노라.

  4 Behold, I am laboring with them continually; and when I speak the word of God with sharpness they tremble and anger against me; and when I use no sharpness they harden their hearts against it; wherefore, I fear lest the Spirit of the Lord hath ceased striving with them.

9:5 이는 그처럼 심히 그들이 분노하여 내가 보기에 그들에게는 죽음에 대한 두려움도 없으며, 그들은 서로를 향한 그들의 사랑도 잃어 버렸고, 끊임없이 피와 복수에 목말라 하고 있음이라.

  5 For so exceedingly do they anger that it seemeth me that they have no fear of death; and they have lost their love, one towards another; and they thirst after blood and revenge continually.

9:6 그러나 이제 나의 사랑하는 아들아, 그들의 완악함에도 불구하고, 우리는 부지런히 일하자. 이는 만일 우리가 수고하기를 그치면 우리가 정죄 아래 들게 될 것임이요, 우리에게는 이 흙의 성막에 있는 동안 해야 할 일이 있음이니, 이는 우리가 모든 의의 원수를 이기고 우리의 영혼으로 하나님의 나라에서 안식을 얻게 하려 함이니라.

  6 And now, my beloved son, notwithstanding their hardness, let us labor diligently; for if we should cease to labor, we should be brought under condemnation; for we have a labor to perform whilst in this tabernacle of clay, that we may conquer the enemy of all righteousness, and rest our souls in the kingdom of God.

9:7 그리고 이제 나는 이 백성의 고난에 관하여 얼마간 기록하노라. 내가 애모론으로부터 받은 지식에 의하면, 보라, 레이맨인들에게는 그들이 셰라이자 망대에서 잡은 포로가 많이 있고, 거기에는 남자와 여자와 아이들이 있었는데,

  7 And now I write somewhat concerning the sufferings of this people. For according to the knowledge which I have received from Amoron, behold, the Lamanites have many prisoners, which they took from the tower of Sherrizah; and there were men, women, and children.

9:8 그 여자들과 아이들의 남편과 아버지들을 그들이 죽이고, 여자들에게는 그 남편의 살을 먹이며, 아이들에게는 그 아버지의 살을 먹이고, 물도 조금씩밖에는 주지 아니하는도다.

  8 And the husbands and fathers of those women and children they have slain; and they feed the women upon the flesh of their husbands, and the children upon the flesh of their fathers; and no water, save a little, do they give unto them.

9:9 그러나 레이맨인들의 이 큰 가증함에도 불구하고, 이는 모리앤툼에 있는 우리 백성의 가증함보다 더하지는 아니하나니, 이는 보라, 많은 레이맨인의 딸들을 저들이 포로로 잡아, 무엇보다도 가장 소중하고 귀한 순결과 정조를 그들에게서 빼앗은 후에 -

  9 And notwithstanding this great abomination of the Lamanites, it doth not exceed that of our people in Moriantum. For behold, many of the daughters of the Lamanites have they taken prisoners; and after depriving them of that which was most dear and precious above all things, which is chastity and virtue-

9:10 그리고 저들이 이런 일을 행한 후에, 가장 잔혹한 방법으로 그들의 육신을 괴롭게 하여 그들을 죽게 하고, 저들이 이렇게 한 후에는, 저들의 마음의 완악함으로 인하여 들짐승처럼 그들의 살을 먹되, 용감함의 표시로 저들이 그리 행함이라.

  10 And after they had done this thing, they did murder them in a most cruel manner, torturing their bodies even unto death; and after they have done this, they devour their flesh like unto wild beasts, because of the hardness of their hearts; and they do it for a token of bravery.

9:11 오 내 사랑하는 아들아, 문명이 없는 백성인들 어찌 이 같을 수 있으리요 -

  11 O my beloved son, how can a people like this, that are without civilization-

9:12 (불과 수년이 지나갔을 뿐이니 그들은 개화되고 기뻐하심을 입던 백성이었거늘)

  12 (And only a few years have passed away, and they were a civil and a delightsome people)

9:13 그러나 내 아들아, 그처럼 많은 가증함을 기뻐한다 하여 백성이 어찌 이 같을 수 있으리요 -

  13 But O my son, how can a people like this, whose delight is in so much abomination-

9:14 하나님께서 우리를 심판하시는 그 손을 멈추시기를 우리가 어찌 기대할 수 있으리요?

  14 How can we expect that God will stay his hand in judgment against us?

9:15 보라, 내 마음이 부르짖기를 이 백성에게 화 있도다. 하나님이시여, 심판하러 나오사 그들의 죄와 간악함과 가증함을 하나님의 면전에서 가리우시옵소서 하는도다.

  15 Behold, my heart cries: Wo unto this people. Come out in judgment, O God, and hide their sins, and wickedness, and abominations from before thy face!

9:16 그리고 또 내 아들아, 셰라이자에 남아 있는 과부와 그 딸들이 많이 있으되, 레이맨인들이 가져 가버리지 아니한 그 식량을 보라, 지네파이의 군대가 가져가고, 그들로 하여금 음식을 찾아 어디로든지 방황하게 버려둔지라, 많은 늙은 여자들이 길가에서 기진하여 죽는도다.

  16 And again, my son, there are many widows and their daughters who remain in Sherrizah; and that part of the provisions which the Lamanites did not carry away, behold, the army of Zenephi has carried away, and left them to wander whithersoever they can for food; and many old women do faint by the way and die.

9:17 그러나 나와 함께 있는 군대는 약하고, 레이맨인들의 군대는 셰라이자와 나 사이에 있으니, 아론의 군대에게로 도망했던 자들을 모두 그들의 끔찍한 포악함에 희생되었느니라.

  17 And the army which is with me is weak; and the armies of the Lamanites are betwixt Sherrizah and me; and as many as have fled to the army of Aaron have fallen victims to their awful brutality.

9:18 오 내 백성의 사악함이여! 그들에게는 질서도 없고 자비도 없도다. 보라, 나는 사람일 뿐이요, 사람의 능력을 가졌을 뿐인지라, 나의 명령을 더 이상 강제할 수 없도다.

  18 O the depravity of my people! They are without order and without mercy. Behold, I am but a man, and I have but the strength of a man, and I cannot any longer enforce my commands.

9:19 또 그들은 그들의 패역함 중에 완강하여져서, 하나같이 포악하여, 노소를 가리지 않고 하나도 살려 두지 아니하며, 선한 것만 제외하고는 모든 것을 기뻐하는지라. 우리의 여자들과 우리의 자녀들이 이 온 땅에서 겪는 고난이 극심하여 필설로 다 할 수 없도다.

  19 And they have become strong in their perversion; and they are alike brutal, sparing none, neither old nor young; and they delight in everything save that which is good; and the suffering of our women and our children upon all the face of this land doth exceed everything; yea, tongue cannot tell, neither can it be written.

9:20 이제 내 아들아, 나는 이 처참한 광경에 대하여 더 이상 언급하지 아니하노라. 보라, 이 백성의 간악함을 네가 알며, 그들은 원리도 없고, 감각도 없으며, 그들의 간악함은 레이맨인들의 간악함보다 더한 줄을 네가 아느니라.

  20 And now, my son, I dwell no longer upon this horrible scene. Behold, thou knowest the wickedness of this people; thou knowest that they are without principle, and past feeling; and their wickedness doth exceed that of the Lamanites.

9:21 보라 내 아들아, 나를 치실까 하여 내가 그들을 하나님께 천거할 수 없도다.

  21 Behold, my son, I cannot recommend them unto God lest he should smite me.

9:22 그러나 보라, 내 아들아, 내가 하나님께 너를 천거하노니, 나는 네가 구원받으리라는 것을 그리스도 안에서 신뢰하노라. 또 나는 하나님께서 네 목숨을 살려 두셔서 그의 백성이 그에게로 돌아오는 것이나, 아니면 그들의 온전한 멸망을 목격하게 해 주시기를 기도하노니, 이는 그들이 회개하고 그에게로 돌아오지 아니하면 반드시 멸망할 것을 내가 앎이라.

  22 But behold, my son, I recommend thee unto God, and I trust in Christ that thou wilt be saved; and I pray unto God that he will spare thy life, to witness the return of his people unto him, or their utter destruction; for I know that they must perish except they repent and return unto him.

9:23 또 만일 그들이 멸망하면, 그것은 야렛인들과 같으리니, 이는 피와 복수를 구하는 그들의 마음의 완악함으로 인함이라.

  23 And if they perish it will be like unto the Jaredites, because of the wilfulness of their hearts, seeking for blood and revenge.

  24 And if it so be that they perish, we know that many of our brethren have deserted over unto the Lamanites, and many more will also desert over unto them; wherefore, write somewhat a few things, if thou art spared and I shall perish and not see thee; but I trust that I may see thee soon; for I have sacred records that I would deliver up unto thee.

9:25 내 아들아, 그리스도 안에서 충실하라. 그리고 내가 쓴 것이 너를 비통하게 하여 너를 억눌러 죽음에 이르게 하지 않기를 바라며, 또 그리스도께서 너를 들어 올리시기를 바라며, 또 그의 고난과 죽으심과 우리 조상들에게 그의 몸을 보이신 일과 그의 자비하심과 오래 참으심과 그의 영광의 소망과 영생의 소망이 영원히 네 마음에 머물러 있기를 바라노라.

  25 My son, be faithful in Christ; and may not the things which I have written grieve thee, to weigh thee down unto death; but may Christ lift thee up, and may his sufferings and death, and the showing his body unto our fathers, and his mercy and long-suffering, and the hope of his glory and of eternal life, rest in your mind forever.

9:26 또 그 보좌가 하늘 높이 있는 하나님 아버지의 은혜와, 만물이 자기에게 복종하게 되기까지 그 권능의 우편에 앉으신 우리 주 예수 그리스도께서 영원토록 너와 함께 계시고 또 거하시기를 원하노라. 아멘.

  26 And may the grace of God the Father, whose throne is high in the heavens, and our Lord Jesus Christ, who sitteth on the right hand of his power, until all things shall become subject unto him, be, and abide with you forever. Amen.

  1 Now I, Moroni, write somewhat as seemeth me good; and I write unto my brethren, the Lamanites; and I would that they should know that more than four hundred and twenty years have passed away since the sign was given of the coming of Christ.

10:4 또 너희가 이 기록을 받거든, 내가 너희를 권면하거니와, 너희는 혹 이 기록이 참되지 아니한지 그리스도의 이름으로 영원하신 하나님 아버지께 간구하여 보라. 너희가 만일 그리스도를 믿는 신앙을 가지고, 진정한 의도를 지니며, 진실한 마음으로 간구할진대, 그는 성신의 권능으로 너희에게 이것의 참됨을 드러내어 주시리라.

  4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.

10:5 또 성신의 권능으로 너희는 모든 것의 참됨을 알게 되리라.

  5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.

10:6 또 무엇이든지 선한 것은 바르고 참된지라. 그러므로 무엇이라도 선한 것은 그리스도를 부인하지 아니하고 그가 계심을 인정하느니라.

  6 And whatsoever thing is good is just and true; wherefore, nothing that is good denieth the Christ, but acknowledgeth that he is.

10:7 이에 너희가 성신의 권능으로 그가 계심을 알리로다. 그런즉 내가 너희를 권면하노니, 너희는 하나님의 권능을 부인하지 말라. 이는 그가 사람의 자녀들의 신앙을 따라 권능으로써 역사하심이 오늘이나 내일이나 영원토록 동일하심이니라.

  7 And ye may know that he is, by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore I would exhort you that ye deny not the power of God; for he worketh by power, according to the faith of the children of men, the same today and tomorrow, and forever.

10:8 그리고 또 나의 형제들아, 내가 너희를 권면하노니, 너희는 하나님의 은사를 부인하지 말라. 이는 은사가 많음이요, 그것들이 같은 하나님에게서 옴이니라. 또 이러한 은사들이 베풀어지는데도 여러 가지 길이 있으나, 모든 것 안에서 모든 것을 역사하시는 이는 같은 하나님이시요, 이러한 것이 하나님의 영의 나타나심으로 사람들에게 주어지는 것은 그들을 유익하게 하려는 것이니라.

  8 And again, I exhort you, my brethren, that ye deny not the gifts of God, for they are many; and they come from the same God. And there are different ways that these gifts are administered; but it is the same God who worketh all in all; and they are given by the manifestations of the Spirit of God unto men, to profit them.

10:9 이는 보라, 어떤 이에게는 하나님의 영으로 말미암아 지혜의 말씀을 가르치게 하여 주시니라.

  9 For behold, to one is given by the Spirit of God, that he may teach the word of wisdom;

10:10 또 다른 이에게는 같은 영으로 지식의 말씀을 가르치게 하여 주시니라.

  10 And to another, that he may teach the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

10:11 또 다른 이에게는 심히 큰 신앙을, 또 다른 이에게는 같은 영으로 병 고침의 은사를,

  11 And to another, exceedingly great faith; and to another, the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

10:12 그리고 또 다른 이에게는 능한 기적 행함을,

  12 And again, to another, that he may work mighty miracles;

  13 And again, to another, that he may prophesy concerning all things;

  18 And I would exhort you, my beloved brethren, that ye remember that every good gift cometh of Christ.

10:19 또 내 사랑하는 형제들아, 내가 너희를 권면하노니, 너희는 그가 어제나 오늘이나 영원토록 동일하심과, 내가 말한 이 모든 영적인 은사가 사람의 자녀들의 믿지 않음을 따라서가 아니고는 세상이 존재하는 동안 결코 폐하여지지 아니할 것임을 기억하라.

  19 And I would exhort you, my beloved brethren, that ye remember that he is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and that all these gifts of which I have spoken, which are spiritual, never will be done away, even as long as the world shall stand, only according to the unbelief of the children of men.

10:20 그런즉 반드시 신앙이 있어야 하며, 반드시 신앙이 있어야 할진대 또한 반드시 소망이 있어야 하며, 반드시 소망이 있어야 할진대 또한 반드시 사랑이 있어야 하느니라.

  20 Wherefore, there must be faith; and if there must be faith there must also be hope; and if there must be hope there must also be charity.

10:21 또 너희에게 사랑이 있지 아니하면 너희가 결단코 하나님의 나라에서 구원받을 수 없고, 너희에게 신앙이 없어도 하나님의 나라에서 구원받을 수 없으며, 너희에게 소망이 없어도 구원받을 수 없느니라.

  21 And except ye have charity ye can in nowise be saved in the kingdom of God; neither can ye be saved in the kingdom of God if ye have not faith; neither can ye if ye have no hope.

10:22 또 만일 너희에게 소망이 없으면 너희가 반드시 절망하리니, 절망은 죄악으로 인하여 오는도다.

  22 And if ye have no hope ye must needs be in despair; and despair cometh because of iniquity.

10:23 그러나 그리스도께서는 진실로 우리 조상들에게 말씀하시기를, 만일 너희에게 신앙이 있으면 내게 합당한 것은 무엇이라도 다 행할 수 있으리라 하셨느니라.

  23 And Christ truly said unto our fathers: If ye have faith ye can do all things which are expedient unto me.

10:24 이에 이제 내가 땅의 모든 끝에게 말하노니 - 만일 너희 가운데 하나님의 권능과 은사가 폐하여지는 날이 이르면 그것은 믿지 않음으로 인함일 것이니라.

  24 And now I speak unto all the ends of the earth-that if the day cometh that the power and gifts of God shall be done away among you, it shall be because of unbelief.

10:25 또 만일 그러할진대 사람의 자녀들에게 화 있을진저, 이는 너희 중에 선을 행하는 자가 없되, 하나도 없을 것임이니, 이는 만일 너희 중에 선을 행하는 자가 있다면 그는 하나님의 권능과 은사로 역사할 것임이니라.

  25 And wo be unto the children of men if this be the case; for there shall be none that doeth good among you, no not one. For if there be one among you that doeth good, he shall work by the power and gifts of God.

10:26 또 이러한 것을 폐하고 죽을 자들에게 화 있나니, 이는 그들이 그들의 죄 가운데 죽고, 하나님의 나라에서 구원받을 수 없음이라. 내가 그리스도의 말씀대로 이를 말하고 거짓말하지 아니하노라.

  26 And wo unto them who shall do these things away and die, for they die in their sins, and they cannot be saved in the kingdom of God; and I speak it according to the words of Christ; and I lie not.

10:27 이에 내가 너희에게 권하노니, 너희는 이러한 것을 기억하라. 이는 내가 거짓말 아니하는 줄 너희가 알게 될 때가 속히 이름이니, 이는 너희가 하나님의 심판대에서 나를 볼 것이요, 주 하나님께서는 너희에게 이르시기를, 이 사람이 기록한 나의 말을 내가 죽은 자 가운데서 외치는 자같이 참으로 티끌에서 말하는 자같이 너희에게 선포하지 아니하였느냐 하실 것임이니라.

  28 I declare these things unto the fulfilling of the prophecies. And behold, they shall proceed forth out of the mouth of the everlasting God; and his word shall hiss forth from generation to generation.

10:29 또 하나님께서는 내가 기록한 것들이 참됨을 너희에게 보이시리라.

  29 And God shall show unto you, that that which I have written is true.

10:30 또 내가 거듭 너희를 권면하노니 너희는 그리스도에게로 나아와 모든 선한 은사를 붙들고 악한 은사나 부정한 것은 손대지 말라.

  30 And again I would exhort you that ye would come unto Christ, and lay hold upon every good gift, and touch not the evil gift, nor the unclean thing.

10:31 그리고 예루살렘이여, 깨어나 티끌에서 일어나라. 또한 시온의 딸아, 네 아름다운 옷을 입으며 너의 말뚝을 견고히 하고 네 경계를 영원히 넓혀 다시는 혼란하게 되지 않게 하고, 그리하여 이스라엘의 집이여, 네게 맺으신 영원하신 아버지의 성약이 성취되게 하라.

  31 And awake, and arise from the dust, O Jerusalem; yea, and put on thy beautiful garments, O daughter of Zion; and strengthen thy stakes and enlarge thy borders forever, that thou mayest no more be confounded, that the covenants of the Eternal Father which he hath made unto thee, O house of Israel, may be fulfilled.

10:32 참으로 그리스도에게로 나아와, 그의 안에서 온전하게 되고, 모든 경건하지 아니한 것을 거부하라. 너희가 만일 모든 경건하지 아니한 것을 거부하고, 너희의 능력과 생각과 힘을 다하여 하나님을 사랑할 것 같으면, 그러면 그의 은혜가 너희에게 족하니, 그의 은혜로 너희가 그리스도 안에서 온전하게 될지라. 또 만일 하나님의 은혜로 너희가 그리스도 안에서 온전하면, 너희가 결단코 하나님의 권능을 부인할 수 없으리로다.

  32 Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.

10:33 그리고 또, 너희가 만일 하나님의 은혜로 그리스도 안에서 온전하고 그의 권능을 부인하지 아니하면, 그러면 너희가 그리스도의 피 흘리심을 통하여 하나님의 은혜로 그리스도 안에서 성결하게 되나니, 이 피 흘리심은 아버지의 성약 안에서 너희의 죄 사함을 위한 것으로서 너희를 거룩하며 흠 없게 되게 하는 것이니라.

  33 And again, if ye by the grace of God are perfect in Christ, and deny not his power, then are ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God, through the shedding of the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the Father unto the remission of your sins, that ye become holy, without spot.

10:34 그리고 이제 나는 모든 이에게 작별을 고하노니, 내가 곧 하나님의 낙원으로 가서 쉬리로다. 그리하여 나의 영과 육신이 다시 재결합하고, 내가 공중에서 승리자로 나아와, 산 자와 죽은 자의 영원한 재판관이신 위대한 여호와의 기쁜 심판대 앞에서 너희를 만나리라. 아멘.

  34 And now I bid unto all, farewell. I soon go to rest in the paradise of God, until my spirit and body shall again reunite, and I am brought forth triumphant through the air, to meet you before the pleasing bar of the great Jehovah, the Eternal Judge of both quick and dead. Amen.
