소개 야곱이 부에 대한 사랑과 교만과 불순결을 비난함 - 사람은 그 이웃을 돕기 위해 부를 추구할 수 있음 - 야곱이 공인되지 아니한 복수 결혼의 실행을 정죄함 - 주는 여인의 순결을 기뻐하심. 주전 544~421년경. Jacob denounces the love of riches, pride, and unchastity—Men should seek riches to help their fellow men—Jacob condemns the unauthorized practice of plural marriage—The Lord delights in the chastity of women. 야곱 2:1 니파이가 죽은 후, 니파이의 동생 야곱이 니파이 백성에게 한 말이라. The words which Jacob, the brother of Nephi, spake unto the people of Nephi, after the death of Nephi:
야곱 2:2 이제 내 사랑하는 형제들아, 나 야곱은 하나님께로 향하여 내가 지니고 있는 바, 진지하게 나의 직분을 영화롭게 해야 할 책임을 좇아, 그리고 나의 옷을 너희의 죄로부터 깨끗하게 하고자, 오늘 성전 안으로 올라와 하나님의 말씀을 너희에게 선포하려 하노라. Now, my beloved brethren, I, Jacob, according to the responsibility which I am under to God, to magnify mine office with soberness, and that I might rid my garments of your sins, I come up into the temple this day that I might declare unto you the word of God.
야곱 2:3 또 내가 지금까지 나의 부름 받은 직분을 부지런히 수행하여 온 줄을 너희 스스로가 알거니와, 나는 오늘 이제까지 그랬던 것보다 너희 영혼의 복리에 대한 훨씬 더 많은 소망과 염려로 짓눌리고 있느니라. And ye yourselves know that I have hitherto been diligent in the office of my calling; but I this day am weighed down with much more desire and anxiety for the welfare of your souls than I have hitherto been.
야곱 2:4 이는 보라, 지금까지는 내가 너희에게 준 주의 말씀을, 너희가 순종하여 왔느니라. For behold, as yet, ye have been obedient unto the word of the Lord, which I have given unto you.
야곱 2:5 그러나 보라, 너희는 내게 귀를 기울여, 내가 전능하신 하늘과 땅의 창조자의 도움으로 너희의 생각에 관하여, 어떻게 너희가 죄 가운데서 일하기 시작하고 있는가를, 너희에게 말해 줄 수 있음을 알지니, 그 죄는 내게 심히 가증하게 보일 뿐만 아니라, 하나님께도 가증하게 보이는 것이니라. But behold, hearken ye unto me, and know that by the help of the all-powerful Creator of heaven and earth I can tell you concerning your thoughts, how that ye are beginning to labor in sin, which sin appeareth very abominable unto me, yea, and abominable unto God.
야곱 2:6 참으로 내가 너희 마음의 간악함에 관하여 너희에게 증거해야만 하는 일은 나의 영혼을 슬프게 하며, 나로 하여금 나를 지으신 이의 면전에서 부끄러움으로 움츠러들게 하는도다. Yea, it grieveth my soul and causeth me to shrink with shame before the presence of my Maker, that I must testify unto you concerning the wickedness of your hearts.
야곱 2:7 또한 내가 너희의 아내들과 너희의 자녀들 앞에서 너희에 관하여 이토록 많은 담대함을 사용하여 말해야만 하는 일은 나를 슬프게 하는도다. 그들 중 많은 이들의 감정이 하나님 앞에 심히 다감하고 순결하며 섬세하니, 이는 하나님을 기쁘게 하는 것이라. And also it grieveth me that I must use so much boldness of speech concerning you, before your wives and your children, many of whose feelings are exceedingly tender and chaste and delicate before God, which thing is pleasing unto God;
야곱 2:8 또 생각하건대 그들은 하나님의 기쁜 말씀, 곧 상한 영혼을 치료하시는 말씀을 듣고자 이리로 올라왔도다. And it supposeth me that they have come up hither to hear the pleasing word of God, yea, the word which healeth the wounded soul.
야곱 2:9 그런즉 내가 하나님께로부터 받은 엄격한 명령으로 말미암아, 불가불 너희의 범죄를 따라 너희를 훈계하여, 이미 상처를 입은 이들의 상처를 위로하고 치유하는 대신, 그들의 상처를 더 크게 하며, 상처를 입지 아니한 이들은, 하나님의 기쁜 말씀을 흡족히 취하며 즐거워하는 대신, 단검을 맞아 그들의 영혼이 찔림을 받고 그들의 섬세한 마음이 상처를 입게 하여야 함이, 내 영혼을 괴롭게 하는도다. Wherefore, it burdeneth my soul that I should be constrained, because of the strict commandment which I have received from God, to admonish you according to your crimes, to enlarge the wounds of those who are already wounded, instead of consoling and healing their wounds; and those who have not been wounded, instead of feasting upon the pleasing word of God have daggers placed to pierce their souls and wound their delicate minds.
야곱 2:10 그러나 과제의 막중함에도 불구하고, 내가 하나님의 엄격하신 명대로 행하여, 마음이 청결한 자들과 상한 마음을 지닌 자들의 면전에서 전능하신 하나님의 꿰뚫어 보시는 눈길 아래서, 너희의 간악함과 가증함에 관하여 너희에게 고해야만 하느니라. But, notwithstanding the greatness of the task, I must do according to the strict commands of God, and tell you concerning your wickedness and abominations, in the presence of the pure in heart, and the broken heart, and under the glance of the piercing eye of the Almighty God.
야곱 2:11 그러한즉 나는 하나님의 말씀의 명백함을 좇아 진리를 너희에게 말해야만 하느니라. 이는 보라, 내가 주께 여쭈었더니, 이같이 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되, 야곱아, 너는 내일 성전에 올라 내가 네게 줄 말을 이 백성에게 선포하라 하셨음이니라. Wherefore, I must tell you the truth according to the plainness of the word of God. For behold, as I inquired of the Lord, thus came the word unto me, saying: Jacob, get thou up into the temple on the morrow, and declare the word which I shall give thee unto this people.
야곱 2:12 이제 보라, 나의 형제들아, 이것이 내가 너희에게 선포하는 말이니라. 곧 너희 가운데 많은 자들이 금과 은과 온갖 귀한 금속을 구하기 시작하였나니, 이러한 것은 너희와 너희 자손들에게 약속의 땅인, 이 땅에 극히 풍부하니라. And now behold, my brethren, this is the word which I declare unto you, that many of you have begun to search for gold, and for silver, and for all manner of precious ores, in the which this land, which is a land of promise unto you and to your seed, doth abound most plentifully.
야곱 2:13 또 은총의 손길이 너희 위에 극히 기쁜 미소를 지은지라. 너희가 많은 부를 얻었으되, 너희 중 몇몇이 너희 형제들의 것보다 더 풍성하게 얻었음으로 인하여, 너희가 너희 마음의 교만 중에 자고하여지며, 너희 의복의 값짐으로 인하여 목을 뻣뻣하게 하고 고개를 높이 쳐들며, 너희가 너희 형제들보다 낫다 생각하여 그들을 핍박 하는도다. And the hand of providence hath smiled upon you most pleasingly, that you have obtained many riches; and because some of you have obtained more abundantly than that of your brethren ye are lifted up in the pride of your hearts, and wear stiff necks and high heads because of the costliness of your apparel, and persecute your brethren because ye suppose that ye are better than they.
야곱 2:14 또 이제 나의 형제들아, 너희는 하나님께서 이 일에 너희를 의롭다 하시는 줄 생각하느냐? 보라, 내가 너희에게 이르노니, 아니라. 도리어 그는 너희를 정죄하시나니, 만일 너희가 이러한 일들을 고집하면 그의 심판이 반드시 속히 너희에게 임하리라. And now, my brethren, do ye suppose that God justifieth you in this thing? Behold, I say unto you, Nay. But he condemneth you, and if ye persist in these things his judgments must speedily come unto you.
야곱 2:15 오 그가 너희를 꿰뚫을 수 있으시며, 그 눈으로 한 번 쳐다보심으로써 너희를 티끌에 쳐버리실 수 있으심을 너희에게 보이시면 좋겠도다! O that he would show you that he can pierce you, and with one glance of his eye he can smite you to the dust!
야곱 2:16 오 그가 너희를 이 죄악과 가증함에서 벗어나게 해 주시면 좋겠도다. 그리고 오 너희가 그의 명하시는 말씀에 귀를 기울여, 이 너희 마음의 교만이 너희의 영혼을 멸하지 않게하면 좋겠도다! O that he would rid you from this iniquity and abomination. And, O that ye would listen unto the word of his commands, and let not this pride of your hearts destroy your souls!
야곱 2:17 너희 형제를 너희 자신과 같이 생각하고, 모든 이와 친숙하며, 너희 재물을 후히 나누어 그들로 너희와 같이 부하게 하라. Think of your brethren like unto yourselves, and be familiar with all and free with your substance, that they may be rich like unto you.
야곱 2:18 그러나 너희가 부를 구하기에 앞서 너희는 하나님의 왕국을 구하라. But before ye seek for riches, seek ye for the kingdom of God.
야곱 2:19 그리고 너희가 그리스도 안에서 소망을 얻은 후에, 만일 너희가 구하면 부를 얻을지니, 너희는 선을 행하려는 - 벗은 자를 입히며, 주린 자를 먹이며, 잡힌 자를 놓아 주며, 병든 자와 고난 당하는 자들을 구제하려는 의도로 그것을 구하리라. And after ye have obtained a hope in Christ ye shall obtain riches, if ye seek them; and ye will seek them for the intent to do good-to clothe the naked, and to feed the hungry, and to liberate the captive, and administer relief to the sick and the afflicted.
야곱 2:20 또 이제 나의 형제들아, 내가 교만에 관하여 너희에게 말하였거니와, 너희 가운데 하나님이 너희에게 주신 것으로 말미암아, 마음이 교만하였음으로 인하여 너희 이웃을 괴롭게 하며 그를 핍박한 자들아, 너희가 그 일에 대해 무슨 말을 하겠느냐? And now, my brethren, I have spoken unto you concerning pride; and those of you which have afflicted your neighbor, and persecuted him because ye were proud in your hearts, of the things which God hath given you, what say ye of it?
야곱 2:21 너희는 그러한 일이 모든 육체를 창조하신 이에게 가증하다고 생각하지 않느냐? 그리고 한 생명은 그의 보시기에 다른 생명과 똑같이 귀하며, 모든 육체는 흙으로 지어졌나니, 그들로 그의 계명을 지켜 영원토록 그에게 영광을 돌리게 하려는 동일한 목적으로, 그가 그들을 창조하셨느니라. Do ye not suppose that such things are abominable unto him who created all flesh? And the one being is as precious in his sight as the other. And all flesh is of the dust; and for the selfsame end hath he created them, that they should keep his commandments and glorify him forever.
야곱 2:22 이에 이제 나는 이 교만에 관하여 너희에게 말하기를 마치노라. 그리고 내가 더 큰 범죄에 관해 너희에게 말하지 않아도 좋다면, 내 마음은 너희로 인하여 심히 기뻐할 것이라. And now I make an end of speaking unto you concerning this pride. And were it not that I must speak unto you concerning a grosser crime, my heart would rejoice exceedingly because of you.
야곱 2:23 그러나 너희의 더 큰 범죄로 인하여 하나님의 말씀이 나를 압박하는도다. 이는 보라, 이같이 주께서 말씀하심이라. 이 백성의 죄악이 자라기 시작하여, 그들이 경전을 깨닫지 못하나니, 이는 그들이 다윗과 그 아들 솔로몬에 관하여 기록된 것으로 인하여, 음행을 범함에 있어 스스로를 변명하려 함이니라. But the word of God burdens me because of your grosser crimes. For behold, thus saith the Lord: This people begin to wax in iniquity; they understand not the scriptures, for they seek to excuse themselves in committing whoredoms, because of the things which were written concerning David, and Solomon his son.
야곱 2:24 보라, 다윗과 솔로몬이 진실로 많은 처와 첩을 두었거니와, 그 일은 내 앞에 가증하였느니라, 주의 말이니라. Behold, David and Solomon truly had many wives and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord.
야곱 2:25 그런즉 이같이 주가 이르노라. 내가 내 팔의 권능으로, 예루살렘 땅에서 이 백성을 인도해 낸 것은, 요셉의 허리의 열매로부터 한 의로운 가지를 나를 위하여 일으키려 함이었느니라. Wherefore, thus saith the Lord, I have led this people forth out of the land of Jerusalem, by the power of mine arm, that I might raise up unto me a righteous branch from the fruit of the loins of Joseph.
야곱 2:26 그런즉 나 주 하나님은 이 백성이 옛적의 그들처럼 행할 것을 용납하지 아니하리라. Wherefore, I the Lord God will not suffer that this people shall do like unto them of old.
야곱 2:27 그런즉 나의 형제들아, 내 말을 듣고 주의 말씀에 귀를 기울이라. 이는 너희 중 아무라도 오직 한 아내를 둘 것이요, 첩은 하나도 두지 말 것임이니, Wherefore, my brethren, hear me, and hearken to the word of the Lord: For there shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none;
야곱 2:28 나 주 하나님은 여인의 순결을 기뻐함이라. 그리고 음행은 내 앞에 가증한 일이로다. 이같이 만군의 주가 말하노라. For I, the Lord God, delight in the chastity of women. And whoredoms are an abomination before me; thus saith the Lord of Hosts.
야곱 2:29 그런즉 이 백성은 내 계명을 지킬지니라, 만군의 주의 말이니라, 그렇지 아니하면 그들의 연고로 땅은 저주를 받을지어다. Wherefore, this people shall keep my commandments, saith the Lord of Hosts, or cursed be the land for their sakes.
야곱 2:30 이는 내가 나를 위하여 자손을 일으키려 할진대, 만군의 주의 말이니라, 내가 내 백성에게 명할 것임이니라. 그렇지 아니하면 그들은 이러한 것에 귀 기울일지니라. For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things.
야곱 2:31 이는 보라, 나 주가 예루살렘 땅에서 참으로 내 백성의 모든 땅에서, 그 남편들의 간악함과 가증함으로 인한 내 백성의 딸들의 슬픔을 보았고, 그 슬퍼함을 들었음이니라. For behold, I, the Lord, have seen the sorrow, and heard the mourning of the daughters of my people in the land of Jerusalem, yea, and in all the lands of my people, because of the wickedness and abominations of their husbands.
야곱 2:32 또 내가 예루살렘 땅에서 인도해 낸 이 백성의 고운 딸들의 부르짖음이, 만군의 주의 말이니라, 내 백성의 남자들을 고발하여 내게로 올라옴을 용납하지 아니하리라, 만군의 주의 말이니라. And I will not suffer, saith the Lord of Hosts, that the cries of the fair daughters of this people, which I have led out of the land of Jerusalem, shall come up unto me against the men of my people, saith the Lord of Hosts.
야곱 2:33 이는 그들이 내 백성의 딸들을 그 마음 고움으로 인하여 사로잡아 이끌어 가지 못할 것임이니, 혹 그리하면 내가 혹심한 저주로 그들을 벌하여, 필경 멸망하게 할 것임이라. 이는 그들이 옛적의 그들처럼, 음행을 범하지 말아야 할 것임이니라, 만군의 주의 말이니라. For they shall not lead away captive the daughters of my people because of their tenderness, save I shall visit them with a sore curse, even unto destruction; for they shall not commit whoredoms, like unto them of old, saith the Lord of Hosts.
야곱 2:34 이제 보라, 나의 형제들아, 너희는 이러한 계명들이 우리 조상 리하이에게 주어졌음을 아나니, 그런즉 너희는 이전에 이를 알았느니라. 이에 너희는 큰 정죄를 받기에 이르렀나니, 이는 너희가 마땅히 행하지 말았어야 할 이러한 일들을 행하였음이니라. And now behold, my brethren, ye know that these commandments were given to our father, Lehi; wherefore, ye have known them before; and ye have come unto great condemnation; for ye have done these things which ye ought not to have done.
야곱 2:35 보라, 너희는 우리의 형제 레이맨인들보다 더 큰 죄악을 행하였도다. 너희는 너희의 마음 고운 아내들의 마음을 상하게 하였고, 너희의 자녀들 앞에 보인 너희의 나쁜 본으로 인하여, 너희 자녀들의 신뢰를 잃었나니, 그들의 마음의 흐느낌이 너희를 고발하여 하나님께 올라가느니라. 또 너희에게 내려오는 하나님의 말씀의 엄격하심으로 인하여, 많은 이들의 마음이 찔려 깊은 상처를 입고 죽었도다. Behold, ye have done greater iniquities than the Lamanites, our brethren. Ye have broken the hearts of your tender wives, and lost the confidence of your children, because of your bad examples before them; and the sobbings of their hearts ascend up to God against you. And because of the strictness of the word of God, which cometh down against you, many hearts died, pierced with deep wounds.
