THE BOOK OF ALMA THE SON OF ALMA The account of Alma, who was the son of Alma, the first and chief judge over the people of Nephi, and also the high priest over the Church. An account of the reign of the judges, and the wars and contentions among the people. And also an account of a war between the Nephites and the Lamanites, according to the record of Alma, the first and chief judge.

앨 1:1	이제 이렇게 되었나니 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 첫해에, 이때 이후로는, 모사이야 왕이 선한 싸움을 싸우고, 하나님 앞에 정직하게 행하고, 자기를 대신하여 다스릴 자를 남기지 아니하고, 온 세상이 가는 길로 갔으되, 그럼에도 불구하고 그가 법을 제정하였었고, 그 법이 백성들에게 인정을 받았던지라, 그러므로 그들이 그가 만든 법을 지킬 의무를 지게 되었더라.	NOW it came to pass that in the first year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi, from this time forward, king Mosiah having gone the way of all the earth, having warred a good warfare, walking uprightly before God, leaving none to reign in his stead; nevertheless he had established laws, and they were acknowledged by the people; therefore they were obliged to abide by the laws which he had made.
앨 1:2	또 이렇게 되었나니 앨마가 판사석에서 다스린 첫해에, 재판을 받으러 그의 앞에 끌려온 사람이 하나 있었으니, 그는 크고, 힘이 세기로 유명한 자이었더라.	And it came to pass that in the first year of the reign of Alma in the judgment-seat, there was a man brought before him to be judged, a man who was large, and was noted for his much strength.
앨 1:3	또 그가 백성 가운데로 다니며, 그가 하나님의 말씀이라 칭하는 바를 그들에게 전파하고, 교회를 압박하며, 백성들에게 선언하기를 모든 제사와 교사는 칭찬받아 마땅하며, 자기 손으로 일하지 않아야 하고, 백성들에 의해 부양되어야 한다 하였더라.	And he had gone about among the people, preaching to them that which he termed to be the word of God, bearing down against the church; declaring unto the people that every priest and teacher ought to become popular; and they ought not to labor with their hands, but that they ought to be supported by the people.
앨 1:4	그가 또한 백성들에게 증거하기를 모든 인류는 마지막 날에 구원을 받을 것이라 하고, 또 그들은 두려워 하거나 떨 필요가 없으며, 도리어 머리를 들고 기뻐해도 좋으니, 이는 주께서 모든 사람을 창조하셨으며, 또한 모든 사람을 구속하셨으므로, 결국에는 모든 사람이 영생을 얻을 것임이라 하였더라.	And he also testified unto the people that all mankind should be saved at the last day, and that they need not fear nor tremble, but that they might lift up their heads and rejoice; for the Lord had created all men, and had also redeemed all men; and, in the end, all men should have eternal life.
앨 1:5	이에 이렇게 되었나니 그가 이러한 것들을 많이 가르치매 많은 자들이 그의 말을 믿더니, 그 수가 많았던지라 그들이 그를 부양하며 그에게 돈을 주기 시작하였더라.	And it came to pass that he did teach these things so much that many did believe on his words, even so many that they began to support him and give him money.
앨 1:6	이에 그가 그 마음의 교만 중에 자고하여져서, 매우 값진 의복을 입기 시작하였고, 그뿐 아니라 심지어 자기가 전파하는 바를 좇아 교회를 세우기 시작하였더라.	And he began to be lifted up in the pride of his heart, and to wear very costly apparel, yea, and even began to establish a church after the manner of his preaching.
앨 1:7	또 이렇게 되었나니 그가 자기의 말을 믿는 자들에게 가르침을 베풀고자 가더니, 하나님의 교회에 속한 한 사람 곧 그 교사들 중 하나를 만나매, 그가 교회의 백성들을 이끌어 내고자 저와 더불어 격렬히 논쟁하기 시작하였으나, 그 사람이 그에게 맞서, 하나님의 말씀으로 그를 훈계하였더라.	And it came to pass as he was going, to preach to those who believed on his word, he met a man who belonged to the church of God, yea, even one of their teachers; and he began to contend with him sharply, that he might lead away the people of the church; but the man withstood him, admonishing him with the words of God.
앨 1:8	이제 그 사람의 이름은 기드온이니, 저는 림하이의 백성을 속박에서 건져냄에 있어 하나님의 손에 든 도구가 되었던 자더라.	Now the name of the man was Gideon; and it was he who was an instrument in the hands of God in delivering the people of Limhi out of bondage.
앨 1:9	이제 기드온이 하나님의 말씀으로 그에게 맞서매 그가 기드온에게 노하여, 자기의 칼을 뽑아 저를 치기 시작하였으나, 이제 기드온이 나이 많아, 그의 공격에 능히 맞서지 못하였나니, 이러므로 저가 칼에 죽임을 당하니라.	Now, because Gideon withstood him with the words of God he was wroth with Gideon, and drew his sword and began to smite him. Now Gideon being stricken with many years, therefore he was not able to withstand his blows, therefore he was slain by the sword.
앨 1:10	이에 저를 죽인 그 사람이 교회의 백성들에게 붙잡혀, 그가 범한 범죄대로 재판을 받기 위하여 앨마 앞으로 끌려왔더라.	And the man who slew him was taken by the people of the church, and was brought before Alma, to be judged according to the crimes which he had committed.
앨 1:11	이에 이렇게 되었나니 그가 앨마 앞에 서서 매우 담대히 스스로를 변호하였더라.	And it came to pass that he stood before Alma and pleaded for himself with much boldness.
앨 1:12	그러나 앨마가 그에게 이르되, 보라, 사제술이 이 백성 가운데 도입된 것은 이것이 처음이니라. 또 보라, 너는 사제술의 죄만 있는 것이 아니라, 칼로 그것을 강제하고자 하였나니, 사제술이 이 백성 중에 강제된다 할진대 그로 인해 이들은 온전히 멸망되리로다.	But Alma said unto him: Behold, this is the first time that priestcraft has been introduced among this people. And behold, thou art not only guilty of priestcraft, but hast endeavored to enforce it by the sword; and were priestcraft to be enforced among this people it would prove their entire destruction.
앨 1:13	또 너는 한 의로운 사람, 참으로 이 백성 가운데 많은 선을 행한 한 사람의 피를 흘렸나니, 우리가 너를 살려둘진대 그의 피가 보복을 위하여 우리에게 임할 것이니라.	And thou hast shed the blood of a righteous man, yea, a man who has done much good among this people; and were we to spare thee his blood would come upon us for vengeance.
앨 1:14	그러므로 우리의 마지막 왕, 모사이야가 우리에게 준 법에 따라 네게 사형을 언도하노니, 그 법은 이 백성에게 인정을 받은 것이니라. 그러므로 이 백성은 반드시 법을 준수하여야 하느니라.	Therefore thou art condemned to die, according to the law which has been given us by Mosiah, our last king; and it has been acknowledged by this people; therefore this people must abide by the law.
앨 1:15	이에 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 그를 잡으매, 그의 이름은 니허라. 그들이 그를 맨타이 언덕 꼭대기에 끌고 갔고, 거기에서 그가 백성들에게 가르친 것이 하나님의 말씀에 반하는 것임을 그가 인정하게 되었으니, 아니 그보다는 그가 스스로 인정하였느니라. 그리고 거기서 그가 욕된 죽음을 당하니라.	And it came to pass that they took him; and his name was Nehor; and they carried him upon the top of the hill Manti, and there he was caused, or rather did acknowledge, between the heavens and the earth, that what he had taught to the people was contrary to the word of God; and there he suffered an ignominious death.
앨 1:16	그럼에도 불구하고 이것이 그 땅 도처에 사제술이 퍼지는 것을 그치게 하지 못하였나니, 이는 세상의 헛된 것들을 사랑하는 자가 많아, 그들이 나아가 거짓 교리를 전파하였음이요, 그들이 이를 행한 것은 부와 명예를 위해서였더라.	Nevertheless, this did not put an end to the spreading of priestcraft through the land; for there were many who loved the vain things of the world, and they went forth preaching false doctrines; and this they did for the sake of riches and honor.
앨 1:17	그럼에도 불구하고 그들이 법을 두려워하여, 알려질 경우 감히 거짓말하려 아니하였으니, 이는 거짓말하는 자들은 처벌을 받았음이라. 그러므로 그들은 그들의 믿음에 따라 전파하는 체하였으니, 이제 법은 그 믿음으로 인하여서는 아무에게도 권력을 미칠 수 없었더라.	Nevertheless, they durst not lie, if it were known, for fear of the law, for liars were punished; therefore they pretended to preach according to their belief; and now the law could have no power on any man for his belief.
앨 1:18	또 그들은 법을 두려워하여 감히 도적질하려 아니하였으니, 그러한 자들은 처벌을 받았음이요, 또한 그들이 감히 강탈하거나 살인하려고도 아니하였으니, 이는 살인하는 자는 사형에 처해졌음이라.	And they durst not steal, for fear of the law, for such were punished; neither durst they rob, nor murder, for he that murdered was punished unto death.
앨 1:19	그러나 이렇게 되었나니 무릇 하나님의 교회에 속하지 아니한 자마다, 하나님의 교회에 속하여 그리스도의 이름을 받드는 자들을 핍박하기 시작하였더라.	But it came to pass that whosoever did not belong to the church of God began to persecute those that did belong to the church of God, and had taken upon them the name of Christ.
앨 1:20	참으로 그들을 핍박하며, 온갖 말로 그들을 괴롭게 하였으니, 이는 그들의 겸손함으로 인함이라. 그들이 그들 스스로의 눈에 교만하지 아니한 연고요, 그들이 참으로 돈 없이 값 없이, 서로 하나님의 말씀을 나눈 연고더라.	Yea, they did persecute them, and afflict them with all manner of words, and this because of their humility; because they were not proud in their own eyes, and because they did impart the word of God, one with another, without money and without price.
앨 1:21	이제 교회의 백성 가운데는, 교회에 속한 자로서 어떤 사람도 일어나 교회에 속하지 아니한 자들을 핍박해서는 아니되며, 또 그들 자신들 중에서도 핍박이 있어선 아니된다는 엄격한 법이 있었더라.	Now there was a strict law among the people of the church, that there should not any man, belonging to the church, arise and persecute those that did not belong to the church, and that there should be no persecution among themselves.
앨 1:22	그럼에도 불구하고 그들 중 많은 자들이 교만해져서, 그들의 대적들과 뜨겁게 다투기 시작하더니, 이윽고 주먹다짐에까지 이르렀으니, 참으로 그들은 주먹으로 서로 치곤 하였더라.	Nevertheless, there were many among them who began to be proud, and began to contend warmly with their adversaries, even unto blows; yea, they would smite one another with their fists.
앨 1:23	이제 이 일이 앨마의 치세 제이년에 있었고, 그 일은 교회에 많은 고난의 원인이 되었나니, 참으로 그 일은 교회에 있어 많은 시험의 원인이 되었더라.	Now this was in the second year of the reign of Alma, and it was a cause of much affliction to the church; yea, it was the cause of much trial with the church.
앨 1:24	이는 많은 자들의 마음이 완악하여지고, 그들의 이름이 지워져 그들이 더 이상 하나님의 백성 가운데 기억되지 못하였음이라. 또한 많은 자들이 스스로 그들 중에서 물러갔더라.	For the hearts of many were hardened, and their names were blotted out, that they were remembered no more among the people of God. And also many withdrew themselves from among them.
앨 1:25	이제 이 일이 신앙 안에 굳게 선 자들에게는 큰 시험이었으나, 그럼에도 불구하고 그들은 확고부동하게 하나님의 계명을 지켰으며, 그들 위에 임하는 핍박을 인내로써 견디었더라.	Now this was a great trial to those that did stand fast in the faith; nevertheless, they were steadfast and immovable in keeping the commandments of God, and they bore with patience the persecution which was heaped upon them.
앨 1:26	또 제사들이 백성들에게 하나님의 말씀을 나누고자 저들의 일을 떠나면, 백성들도 하나님의 말씀을 듣고자 그들의 일을 떠났으며, 제사가 그들에게 하나님의 말씀을 나누고 나면 그들 모두가 부지런히 그들의 일에 다시 돌아갔으니, 제사가 스스로를 그 듣는 자들보다 위에 있다고 여기지 아니한 것은, 전파하는 자가 듣는 자보다 나을 것이 없고, 가르치는 자가 배우는 자보다 더 낫지 아니함이라. 이같이 그들이 모두 동등하였고, 그들이 다 일하되 각 사람이 그 힘대로 일하였더라.	And when the priests left their labor to impart the word of God unto the people, the people also left their labors to hear the word of God. And when the priest had imparted unto them the word of God they all returned again diligently unto their labors; and the priest, not esteeming himself above his hearers, for the preacher was no better than the hearer, neither was the teacher any better than the learner; and thus they were all equal, and they did all labor, every man according to his strength.
앨 1:27	또 그들은 각기 자기가 가진 바에 따라, 그 재물을 가난한 자와, 궁핍한 자와, 병든 자와, 고난당하는 자들에게 나누어 주었으며, 또 그들은 값비싼 의복을 입지 아니하였으나, 그럼에도 깨끗하고 단정하였더라.	And they did impart of their substance, every man according to that which he had, to the poor, and the needy, and the sick, and the afflicted; and they did not wear costly apparel, yet they were neat and comely.
앨 1:28	그리고 이와 같이 그들이 참으로 교회의 제반사를 확립하였고, 이리하여 그들은 그들의 모든 핍박에도 불구하고, 다시 계속하여 평화를 누리기 시작하였더라.	And thus they did establish the affairs of the church; and thus they began to have continual peace again, notwithstanding all their persecutions.
앨 1:29	그리고 이제, 교회의 굳건함으로 말미암아 그들은 심히 부유하게 되어, 무엇이든지 그들에게 필요한 모든 것이 풍부하게 되었으니 - 양 떼와 소 떼와, 온갖 살진 짐승이 풍부하였으며, 또한 곡식과 금과 은과 귀한 것들이 풍부하였으며, 비단과 세마포와 온갖 좋은 검소한 옷감이 풍부하였느니라.	And now, because of the steadiness of the church they began to be exceedingly rich, having abundance of all things whatsoever they stood in need—an abundance of flocks and herds, and fatlings of every kind, and also abundance of grain, and of gold, and of silver, and of precious things, and abundance of silk and fine-twined linen, and all manner of good homely cloth.
앨 1:30	또 이같이, 그들이 번영하는 가운데, 그들이 벗은 자나 주린 자나 목마른 자나 병든 자나 양육 받지 못한 자를 아무도 보내어 버리지 아니하였으며, 또 그들이 재물에 그 마음을 두지 아니하였으므로, 도움이 필요한 자에게는 사람의 외모를 취하지 아니하고, 교회 안에 있거나 교회 밖에 있거나 간에, 늙은 자와 젊은 자 매인 자와 자유로운 자 남자와 여자 모두에게 후히 나누어 주었더라.	And thus, in their prosperous circumstances, they did not send away any who were naked, or that were hungry, or that were athirst, or that were sick, or that had not been nourished; and they did not set their hearts upon riches; therefore they were liberal to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, whether out of the church or in the church, having no respect to persons as to those who stood in need.
앨 1:31	이에 이같이 그들은 번영하여 그들의 교회에 속하지 아니한 자들보다 훨씬 더 부유하게 되었더라.	And thus they did prosper and become far more wealthy than those who did not belong to their church.
앨 1:32	이는 그들의 교회에 속하지 아니한 자들이 마술과 우상 숭배 또는 게으름과 수다와 시기와 다툼에 탐닉하며, 값비싼 의복을 입으며 그들 스스로의 눈의 교만 중에 자고하여져서 핍박하며 거짓말하며 도적질하며 강탈하며 음행과 살인과 온갖 간악함을 범하였음이라. 그러나 법은 가능한 대로 그것을 범하는 자 모두에게 시행되었더라.	For those who did not belong to their church did indulge themselves in sorceries, and in idolatry or idleness, and in babblings, and in envyings and strife; wearing costly apparel; being lifted up in the pride of their own eyes; persecuting, lying, thieving, robbing, committing whoredoms, and murdering, and all manner of wickedness; nevertheless, the law was put in force upon all those who did transgress it, inasmuch as it was possible.
앨 1:33	또한 이렇게 되었나니 이같이 그들에게 법을 집행함으로써, 각 사람이 자기가 행한 바대로 벌을 당하였으므로, 그들이 더욱 잠잠해져서, 알려질 경우 감히 아무 간악함도 범하려 하지 아니하였나니, 그러므로 판사 치세 제오년에 이르기까지 니파이 백성 가운데 많은 평화가 있으니라.	And it came to pass that by thus exercising the law upon them, every man suffering according to that which he had done, they became more still, and durst not commit any wickedness if it were known; therefore, there was much peace among the people of Nephi until the fifth year of the reign of the judges.
