The Lord sends Ammon to Middoni to deliver his imprisoned brethren—Ammon and Lamoni meet Lamoni’s father, who is king over all the land—Ammon compels the old king to approve the release of his brethren. 앨 20:1 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 그 땅에 교회를 세우고 난 뒤, 라모나이 왕이 암몬이 자기와 함께 니파이 땅으로 가기를 원하니, 이는 그를 자기 부친에게 보이고자 함이라. AND it came to pass that when they had established a church in that land, that king Lamoni desired that Ammon should go with him to the land of Nephi, that he might show him unto his father.
앨 20:2 이에 주의 음성이 암몬에게 임하여 이르시되, 너는 니파이 땅으로 올라가지 말지니, 보라, 왕이 네 생명을 노릴 것임이니라. 오히려 너는 믿도나이 땅으로 갈지니, 이는 보라, 거기에 네 형제 아론과 또한 뮬로카이와 앰마가 옥에 갇혀 있음이니라. And the voice of the Lord came to Ammon, saying: Thou shalt not go up to the land of Nephi, for behold, the king will seek thy life; but thou shalt go to the land of Middoni; for behold, thy brother Aaron, and also Muloki and Ammah are in prison.
앨 20:3 이제 이렇게 되었나니 암몬이 이를 듣고, 라모나이에게 이르되, 보소서, 내 형제와 동역자들이 믿도나이에서 옥에 갇혀 있어, 내가 가서 그들을 구하고자 하나이다. Now it came to pass that when Ammon had heard this, he said unto Lamoni: Behold, my brother and brethren are in prison at Middoni, and I go that I may deliver them.
앨 20:4 이제 라모나이가 암몬에게 이르되, 주의 능력 안에서 당신이 모든 것을 하실 수 있음을 내가 아나이다. 그러나 보소서, 내가 당신과 함께 믿도나이 땅으로 가리니, 앤티옴노라 이름하는 믿도나이 땅의 왕은 내게 친구가 됨이니이다. 그러므로 내가 믿도나이 땅으로 가서, 그 땅의 왕을 잘 달래면, 그가 당신의 형제들을 옥에서 내보내리이다. 이제 라모나이가 이르되, 당신의 형제들이 옥에 갇혀 있다고 누가 당신께 고하더이까? Now Lamoni said unto Ammon: I know, in the strength of the Lord thou canst do all things. But behold, I will go with thee to the land of Middoni; for the king of the land of Middoni, whose name is Antiomno, is a friend unto me; therefore I go to the land of Middoni, that I may flatter the king of the land, and he will cast thy brethren out of prison. Now Lamoni said unto him: Who told thee that thy brethren were in prison?
앨 20:5 이에 암몬이 그에게 이르되, 하나님 외에는 아무도 나에게 고하지 아니하였으니, 그가 내게 이르시기를 가서 네 형제들을 구하라, 그들이 믿도나이 땅에서 옥에 갇혀 있음이니라 하셨나이다. And Ammon said unto him: No one hath told me, save it be God; and he said unto me—Go and deliver thy brethren, for they are in prison in the land of Middoni.
앨 20:6 이제 라모나이가 이를 듣고는 그 종들로 하여금 자기의 말들과 자기의 병거들을 준비하게 하더라. Now when Lamoni had heard this he caused that his servants should make ready his horses and his chariots.
앨 20:7 그리고 암몬에게 이르되, 오소서, 내가 당신과 함께 믿도나이 땅으로 내려가, 거기서 그 왕에게 간청하여 그로 당신의 형제들을 옥에서 내보내게 하겠나이다 하더라. And he said unto Ammon: Come, I will go with thee down to the land of Middoni, and there I will plead with the king that he will cast thy brethren out of prison.
앨 20:8 이에 이렇게 되었나니 암몬과 라모나이가 그리로 여행하다가, 그 온 땅을 다스리는 왕인 라모나이의 부친을 만나더라. And it came to pass that as Ammon and Lamoni were journeying thither, they met the father of Lamoni, who was king over all the land.
앨 20:9 이에 보라 라모나이의 부친이 그에게 이르되, 어찌하여 너는 내가 내 아들들과 내 백성을 위하여 잔치를 베푼 저 큰 날에 잔치에 오지 아니하였느냐? And behold, the father of Lamoni said unto him: Why did ye not come to the feast on that great day when I made a feast unto my sons, and unto my people?
앨 20:10 또 이르되, 너는 거짓말쟁이의 자손 중 하나인 이 니파이인과 함께 어디로 가고 있는 중이냐? And he also said: Whither art thou going with this Nephite, who is one of the children of a liar?
앨 20:11 이에 이렇게 되었나니 라모나이가 자기가 어디로 가고 있는 중인 지 그에게 자세히 이르니, 이는 그를 노엽게 할까 두려워함이라. And it came to pass that Lamoni rehearsed unto him whither he was going, for he feared to offend him.
앨 20:12 저가 또한 자기 나라에 머물러 그 부친이 예비한 잔치에 그에게로 가지 아니한 까닭을 그에게 다 고하였더라. And he also told him all the cause of his tarrying in his own kingdom, that he did not go unto his father to the feast which he had prepared.
앨 20:13 이제 라모나이가 이 모든 일을 그에게 자세히 이르고 나매, 보라, 그가 놀랍게도 그의 부친은 그에게 노하며 이르되, 라모나이야, 네가 이 니파이인들을 구하려고 가고 있으니, 이들은 거짓말쟁이의 자식들이라. 보라, 그는 우리 조상들을 약탈하였고, 이제 그의 자손들 역시 우리 가운데 와서, 그들의 간교함과 그들의 거짓말로 우리를 속여, 우리에게서 우리의 소유를 약탈하려 하느니라 하더라. And now when Lamoni had rehearsed unto him all these things, behold, to his astonishment, his father was angry with him, and said: Lamoni, thou art going to deliver these Nephites, who are sons of a liar. Behold, he robbed our fathers; and now his children are also come amongst us that they may, by their cunning and their lyings, deceive us, that they again may rob us of our property.
앨 20:14 이제 라모나이의 부친이 그에게 암몬을 칼로 죽일 것을 명하고, 또한 그에게 믿도나이 땅으로 가지 말고 자기와 함께 이스마엘 땅으로 갈 것을 명하였더라. Now the father of Lamoni commanded him that he should slay Ammon with the sword. And he also commanded him that he should not go to the land of Middoni, but that he should return with him to the land of Ishmael.
앨 20:15 그러나 라모나이가 그에게 이르되, 나는 암몬을 죽이지 아니하겠고, 이스마엘 땅으로 돌아가지도 아니하겠사오며, 도리어 암몬의 형제들을 방면하러 믿도나이 땅으로 가오니, 이는 그들이 의로운 사람들이요 참 하나님의 거룩한 선지자들인줄을 내가 앎이니이다 하니라. But Lamoni said unto him: I will not slay Ammon, neither will I return to the land of Ishmael, but I go to the land of Middoni that I may release the brethren of Ammon, for I know that they are just men and holy prophets of the true God.
앨 20:16 이제 그의 부친이 이 말을 듣고, 그에게 노하여, 그를 쳐 땅에 엎드러지게 하고자 칼을 빼었더라. Now when his father had heard these words, he was angry with him, and he drew his sword that he might smite him to the earth.
앨 20:17 그러나 암몬이 나서서 그에게 이르되, 보소서, 당신 아들을 죽이지 마소서. 그러나 당신보다 그가 쓰러지는 것이 나으리니, 이는 보소서, 그는 이미 자기의 죄를 회개하였음이라. 그러나 이때 만일 당신이 노한 가운데 쓰러지면, 당신의 영혼은 구원받지 못하리이다. But Ammon stood forth and said unto him: Behold, thou shalt not slay thy son; nevertheless, it were better that he should fall than thee, for behold, he has repented of his sins; but if thou shouldst fall at this time, in thine anger, thy soul could not be saved.
앨 20:18 그리고 또 당신이 참아야 마땅함은, 당신이 만일 당신 아들을 죽인다면, 그가 무죄한 사람인지라, 그의 피가 땅에서부터 주 그의 하나님께 부르짖어, 당신에게 보복이 임할 것임이니, 아마도 당신은 당신의 영혼을 잃게 될 것임이니이다. And again, it is expedient that thou shouldst forbear; for if thou shouldst slay thy son, he being an innocent man, his blood would cry from the ground to the Lord his God, for vengeance to come upon thee; and perhaps thou wouldst lose thy soul.
앨 20:19 이제 암몬이 그에게 이 말을 하자, 그가 암몬에게 대답하여 이르되, 내가 만일 내 아들을 죽인다면, 내가 무죄한 피를 흘릴 줄 아노니, 이는 그를 멸망시키고자 꾀한 것이 너임이로다 하였더라. Now when Ammon had said these words unto him, he answered him, saying: I know that if I should slay my son, that I should shed innocent blood; for it is thou that hast sought to destroy him.
앨 20:20 그리고 그 손을 뻗어 암몬을 죽이려 하였으나, 암몬이 그의 공격을 막더니, 또한 그의 팔을 쳐 쓰지 못하게 하였더라. And he stretched forth his hand to slay Ammon. But Ammon withstood his blows, and also smote his arm that he could not use it.
앨 20:21 이제 왕이 암몬이 자기를 죽일 수 있음을 보고, 암몬에게 자기 목숨을 살려 줄 것을 간청하기 시작하였더라. Now when the king saw that Ammon could slay him, he began to plead with Ammon that he would spare his life.
앨 20:22 암몬이 그의 칼을 치켜들고, 그에게 이르되, 보소서, 당신이 내 형제들을 옥에서 나가게 해 주지 아니할진대 당신을 치겠나이다 하더라. But Ammon raised his sword, and said unto him: Behold, I will smite thee except thou wilt grant unto me that my brethren may be cast out of prison.
앨 20:23 이제 왕이 자기 목숨을 잃을까 두려워하여 이르되, 나를 살려 주면 원하는 것은 무엇이든지, 나라의 절반이라도 주겠노라 하더라. Now the king, fearing he should lose his life, said: If thou wilt spare me I will grant unto thee whatsoever thou wilt ask, even to half of the kingdom.
앨 20:24 이제 암몬이 늙은 왕을 자기 뜻대로 움직였음을 보고, 그에게 이르되, 만일 당신이 내 형제들을 옥에서 나가도록 허락해 주고, 또한 라모나이로 그의 왕국을 그대로 가지게 하며, 그를 노여워하지 아니하고, 그가 생각하는 것은 무엇이라도 그 자신의 원대로 할 것을 허락한다면, 그러면 당신을 살려 주려니와, 그렇지 아니하면 당신을 쳐 땅에 엎드러뜨리리다. Now when Ammon saw that he had wrought upon the old king according to his desire, he said unto him: If thou wilt grant that my brethren may be cast out of prison, and also that Lamoni may retain his kingdom, and that ye be not displeased with him, but grant that he may do according to his own desires in whatsoever thing he thinketh, then will I spare thee; otherwise I will smite thee to the earth.
앨 20:25 이제 암몬이 이 말을 하고 나자, 왕이 자기 목숨으로 인하여 기뻐하기 시작하더라. Now when Ammon had said these words, the king began to rejoice because of his life.
앨 20:26 또 암몬에게 자기를 멸할 뜻이 없음을 보고, 또한 그가 자기 아들 라모나이에 대하여 가진 큰 사랑을 보고, 심히 놀라 이르되, 내가 그대의 형제들을 놓아 주고, 나의 아들 라모나이로 하여금 그의 왕국을 그대로 가지게 용납하는 이것이, 그대가 원한 모든 것인즉, 보라, 내가 그대에게 허락하여 내 아들이 이때로부터 영원히 그의 왕국을 그대로 가지게 하겠고, 내가 더 이상 그를 지배하지 아니할 것이며 - And when he saw that Ammon had no desire to destroy him, and when he also saw the great love he had for his son Lamoni, he was astonished exceedingly, and said: Because this is all that thou hast desired, that I would release thy brethren, and suffer that my son Lamoni should retain his kingdom, behold, I will grant unto you that my son may retain his kingdom from this time and forever; and I will govern him no more—
앨 20:27 내가 또한 그대의 형제들이 옥에서 나감과 그대와 그대의 형제들이 내 나라에 나를 찾아옴을 그대에게 허락하겠노라. 이는 내가 그대 보기를 몹시 원할 것임이로라 하였으니, 이는 왕이 그가 한 말과 또한 자기 아들 라모나이가 한 말에 크게 놀랐으므로, 그 말한 것을 배우기 원하였음이더라. And I will also grant unto thee that thy brethren may be cast out of prison, and thou and thy brethren may come unto me, in my kingdom; for I shall greatly desire to see thee. For the king was greatly astonished at the words which he had spoken, and also at the words which had been spoken by his son Lamoni, therefore he was desirous to learn them.
앨 20:28 이에 이렇게 되었나니 암몬과 라모나이가 믿도나이 땅을 향하여 그들의 여행을 계속하였고, 라모나이가 그 땅 왕의 눈에 은혜를 입었으므로, 암몬의 형제들이 옥에서 나오게 되니라. And it came to pass that Ammon and Lamoni proceeded on their journey towards the land of Middoni. And Lamoni found favor in the eyes of the king of the land; therefore the brethren of Ammon were brought forth out of prison.
앨 20:29 또 암몬은 그들을 만났을 때 심히 슬펐으니, 이는 보라 그들이 벌거벗었고, 단단한 줄로 결박됨으로 인하여 그들의 피부가 심히 상했음이라. 또한 그들은 굶주림, 갈증, 그리고 온갖 고난을 겪었으나, 그럼에도 불구하고 그들은 그들의 모든 고통 중에 인내하였더라. And when Ammon did meet them he was exceedingly sorrowful, for behold they were naked, and their skins were worn exceedingly because of being bound with strong cords. And they also had suffered hunger, thirst, and all kinds of afflictions; nevertheless they were patient in all their sufferings.
앨 20:30 또 일이 된 바로는, 그들의 경우 더 완악하고 더 목이 뻣뻣한 백성의 손에 빠졌었나니, 그러므로 저들이 그들의 말을 듣고자 아니하여, 그들을 쫓아 내고, 그들을 때리고, 그들을 이 집에서 저 집으로, 이 곳에서 저 곳으로 몰아내매, 이윽고 그들이 믿도나이 땅에 이르렀더니, 거기서 그들이 잡혀 옥에 던지워, 단단한 줄에 결박되어서, 여러 날 옥에 갇혀 있다가, 라모나이와 암몬에게 구출되었더라. And, as it happened, it was their lot to have fallen into the hands of a more hardened and a more stiffnecked people; therefore they would not hearken unto their words, and they had cast them out, and had smitten them, and had driven them from house to house, and from place to place, even until they had arrived in the land of Middoni; and there they were taken and cast into prison, and bound with strong cords, and kept in prison for many days, and were delivered by Lamoni and Ammon.
