앨 4:1 이제 이렇게 되었나니 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제육년에, 제이라헤믈라 땅에 다툼이나 전쟁이 없었으나, NOW it came to pass in the sixth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi, there were no contentions nor wars in the land of Zarahemla;
앨 4:2 백성들이 고난을 당하되, 참으로 그들의 형제들을 잃음으로 말미암아, 또한 그들의 양 떼와 소 떼를 잃음으로 말미암아, 또한 발 아래 짓밟혀 레이맨인들에 의해 훼파된 바, 그들의 곡식밭을 잃음으로 말미암아 크게 고난을 당하였더라. But the people were afflicted, yea, greatly afflicted for the loss of their brethren, and also for the loss of their flocks and herds, and also for the loss of their fields of grain, which were trodden under foot and destroyed by the Lamanites.
앨 4:3 이에 그들의 고난이 어찌나 컸던지 모든 사람에게 애통함이 있었고, 그들은 이것이 그들의 간악함과 그들의 가증함으로 인하여 그들 위에 보내신 하나님의 심판이라 믿은지라, 그러므로 그들이 일깨움을 받아 그들의 의무를 기억하게 되었더라. And so great were their afflictions that every soul had cause to mourn; and they believed that it was the judgments of God sent upon them because of their wickedness and their abominations; therefore they were awakened to a remembrance of their duty.
앨 4:4 이에 그들이 더욱 온전히 교회를 세우기 시작하였고, 또한 많은 자들이 시돈 물에서 침례를 받고 하나님의 교회에 가입하였으니, 참으로 그들은 그 부친 앨마의 손으로, 교회의 백성 위에 대제사로 성별된 앨마의 손으로 침례를 받았더라. And they began to establish the church more fully; yea, and many were baptized in the waters of Sidon and were joined to the church of God; yea, they were baptized by the hand of Alma, who had been consecrated the high priest over the people of the church, by the hand of his father Alma.
앨 4:5 또 이렇게 되었나니 판사 치세 제칠년에 하나님의 교회에 연합하여 침례를 받은 자가 대략 삼천오백 인 가량 있었으며, 이같이 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제칠년이 끝났나니, 그 기간 동안 내내 평화가 있었더라. And it came to pass in the seventh year of the reign of the judges there were about three thousand five hundred souls that united themselves to the church of God and were baptized. And thus ended the seventh year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi; and there was continual peace in all that time.
앨 4:6 그리고 판사 치세 제팔년에 이렇게 되었나니, 교회의 백성들이 그들의 근면함으로 얻은 바, 그들의 심히 큰 부와 그들의 상품 비단과 그들의 세마포로 인하여, 또 그들의 많은 양 떼와 소 떼와 그들의 금과 은과 온갖 귀한 것들로 인하여 점차 교만해지기 시작하였고, 이 모든 것으로 그들이 그 눈의 교만 중에 자고하게 되었나니, 이는 그들이 대단히 값비싼 의복을 입기 시작하였음이라. And it came to pass in the eighth year of the reign of the judges, that the people of the church began to wax proud, because of their exceeding riches, and their fine silks, and their fine-twined linen, and because of their many flocks and herds, and their gold and their silver, and all manner of precious things, which they had obtained by their industry; and in all these things were they lifted up in the pride of their eyes, for they began to wear very costly apparel.
앨 4:7 이제 이것은 앨마에게, 또한 앨마가 성별하여 교회에 교사와, 제사와, 장로가 되게 한 무리 중 많은 이들에게 많은 고난의 원인이었나니, 참으로 그들 중 많은 이들이 그들이 본 바 그들의 백성 가운데 있기 시작한 간악함으로 말미암아 심히 비통하게 되었더라. Now this was the cause of much affliction to Alma, yea, and to many of the people whom Alma had consecrated to be teachers, and priests, and elders over the church; yea, many of them were sorely grieved for the wickedness which they saw had begun to be among their people.
앨 4:8 이는 교회의 백성들이 그 눈의 교만 중에 자고하며, 그 마음을 재물과 세상의 헛된 것에 두기 시작하여, 서로 조소하기 시작하고, 그들 스스로의 뜻과 기뻐하는 바를 좇아 믿지 아니하는 자들을 핍박하기 시작하는 것을, 그들이 큰 슬픔을 지닌 채 보고 또 보았음이라. For they saw and beheld with great sorrow that the people of the church began to be lifted up in the pride of their eyes, and to set their hearts upon riches and upon the vain things of the world, that they began to be scornful, one towards another, and they began to persecute those that did not believe according to their own will and pleasure.
앨 4:9 또 이리하여 이 판사 치세 제팔년에 교회의 백성 가운데 큰 분쟁이 생겼으니, 참으로 시기함과 다툼과 악의와 핍박과 교만이 있어, 심지어 하나님의 교회에 속하지 아니한 자들의 교만보다 더하였더라. And thus, in this eighth year of the reign of the judges, there began to be great contentions among the people of the church; yea, there were envyings, and strife, and malice, and persecutions, and pride, even to exceed the pride of those who did not belong to the church of God.
앨 4:10 또 이같이 판사 치세 제팔년이 끝났으니, 교회의 간악함은 교회에 속하지 아니한 자들에게 큰 걸림돌이 되었고 이리하여 교회는 발전하지 못하게 되어 갔느니라. And thus ended the eighth year of the reign of the judges; and the wickedness of the church was a great stumbling-block to those who did not belong to the church; and thus the church began to fail in its progress.
앨 4:11 이에 이렇게 되었나니 제구년 초에, 앨마는 교회의 간악함을 보았고, 또한 교회의 본이 믿지 아니하는 자들을 한 가지 죄악에서 또 한 가지 죄악으로 인도하여, 백성의 멸망을 가져오기 시작하는 것을 보았더라. And it came to pass in the commencement of the ninth year, Alma saw the wickedness of the church, and he saw also that the example of the church began to lead those who were unbelievers on from one piece of iniquity to another, thus bringing on the destruction of the people.
앨 4:12 참으로 그가 백성 가운데 큰 불평등을 보았으니, 어떤 이들이 그 교만으로 자고하여, 다른 자들을 멸시하며, 궁핍한 자와 벗은 자와 주린 자들과 목마른 자들과 병들고 고난 받는 자들에게 그들의 등을 돌림이라. Yea, he saw great inequality among the people, some lifting themselves up with their pride, despising others, turning their backs upon the needy and the naked and those who were hungry, and those who were athirst, and those who were sick and afflicted.
앨 4:13 이제 이것이 백성 가운데 슬피울게 하는 큰 원인이었으나, 한편으로 다른 이들은 스스로를 낮추어, 그들의 도움을 필요로 하는 자들에게 도움을 베풀었나니, 예컨대 가난하고 궁핍한 자들에게 그들이 가진 것을 나누어 주며, 주린 자를 먹이며, 예언의 영에 따를진대 장차 오실 이 이신 그리스도를 위하여 온갖 고난을 받으며, Now this was a great cause for lamentations among the people, while others were abasing themselves, succoring those who stood in need of their succor, such as imparting their substance to the poor and the needy, feeding the hungry, and suffering all manner of afflictions, for Christ’s sake, who should come according to the spirit of prophecy;
앨 4:14 그 날을 고대하며, 이같이 하여 그들의 죄 사함을 간직하며, 사망의 줄에서 건지시는 예수 그리스도의 뜻과 권능과 건지심에 따른 바, 죽은 자의 부활로 말미암아 큰 기쁨으로 충만하게 되었더라. Looking forward to that day, thus retaining a remission of their sins; being filled with great joy because of the resurrection of the dead, according to the will and power and deliverance of Jesus Christ from the bands of death.
앨 4:15 이에 이제 이렇게 되었나니 앨마가 하나님을 따르는 겸손한 자들의 고난과 나머지 그의 백성들에 의해 그들에게 가해지는 핍박을 보고 나서, 또 그들의 모든 불평등을 보고 대단히 비통하여졌으나 그럼에도 주의 영은 그를 떠나지 아니하였더라. And now it came to pass that Alma, having seen the afflictions of the humble followers of God, and the persecutions which were heaped upon them by the remainder of his people, and seeing all their inequality, began to be very sorrowful; nevertheless the Spirit of the Lord did not fail him.
앨 4:16 이에 그가 교회의 장로 중에 있는 현명한 사람 하나를 골라, 백성의 소리에 따라 그에게 권능을 주어, 그로 이미 주어진 법에 따라 법을 제정하며, 백성들의 간악함과 범죄를 좇아 법을 시행할 수 있는 권능을 갖게 하였더라. And he selected a wise man who was among the elders of the church, and gave him power according to the voice of the people, that he might have power to enact laws according to the laws which had been given, and to put them in force according to the wickedness and the crimes of the people.
앨 4:17 이제 이 사람의 이름은 니파이하라, 그가 대판사로 임명되어, 판사직에 앉아 백성들을 판단하며 다스리게 되니라. Now this man’s name was Nephihah, and he was appointed chief judge; and he sat in the judgment-seat to judge and to govern the people.
앨 4:18 이제 교회를 관할하는 대제사되는 직분은 앨마가 그에게 주지 아니하였나니, 그가 대제사 직분은 스스로 유지하였으나, 판사직은 니파이하에게 넘겨주었더라. Now Alma did not grant unto him the office of being high priest over the church, but he retained the office of high priest unto himself; but he delivered the judgment-seat unto Nephihah.
앨 4:19 그리고 그가 이렇게 한 것은 그 자신 그의 백성 가운데, 곧 니파이 백성 가운데 나아가, 그들에게 하나님의 말씀을 전파하여, 그들을 각성시켜 그들의 의무를 기억하게 하며, 하나님의 말씀으로 모든 교만과 간교함과 그의 백성 중에 있는 모든 다툼을 끌어내리고자 함이었으니, 순수한 간증으로 그들을 압도하지 아니하고는 그들을 돌이키게 할 방도를 알지 못하였음이라. And this he did that he himself might go forth among his people, or among the people of Nephi, that he might preach the word of God unto them, to stir them up in remembrance of their duty, and that he might pull down, by the word of God, all the pride and craftiness and all the contentions which were among his people, seeing no way that he might reclaim them save it were in bearing down in pure testimony against them.
앨 4:20 이리하여 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제구년 초에, 앨마는 니파이하에게 판사직을 넘겨주고, 하나님의 거룩한 반차의 대신권직에, 계시와 예언의 영에 따라 말씀을 증거하는 일에 전적으로 헌신하였더라. And thus in the commencement of the ninth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi, Alma delivered up the judgment-seat to Nephihah, and confined himself wholly to the high priesthood of the holy order of God, to the testimony of the word, according to the spirit of revelation and prophecy.
