앨 53:1 또 이렇게 되었나니 저희가 레이맨인 포로들 위에 감시병들을 세우고 그들을 강제하여, 나아가 그들의 죽은 자들을 장사하게 하고 또한 죽임을 당한 니파이인들의 시체도 그리하게 하되, 모로나이가 그들 위에 병사들을 두어 그들이 그 일을 하는 동안 그들을 지키게 하였더라. AND it came to pass that they did set guards over the prisoners of the Lamanites, and did compel them to go forth and bury their dead, yea, and also the dead of the Nephites who were slain; and Moroni placed men over them to guard them while they should perform their labors.
앨 53:2 또 모로나이가 리하이와 함께 뮬레크 성으로 가서 그 성의 통제권을 취하여 그를 리하이에게 주었으니, 이제 보라, 이 리하이는 모로나이가 싸운 모든 전투 중 대부분의 전투에서 모로나이와 함께 한 자요 또 그는 모로나이와 같은 자러니, 그들은 서로의 무사함을 기뻐하였더라. 참으로 그들은 서로에게 사랑을 받았고 또한 모든 니파이 백성에게도 사랑을 받았더라. And Moroni went to the city of Mulek with Lehi, and took command of the city and gave it unto Lehi. Now behold, this Lehi was a man who had been with Moroni in the more part of all his battles; and he was a man like unto Moroni, and they rejoiced in each other’s safety; yea, they were beloved by each other, and also beloved by all the people of Nephi.
앨 53:3 또 이렇게 되었나니 레이맨인들이 그들의 죽은 자와 또한 니파이인들의 죽은 자 장사하기를 마친 후에 그들을 행군시켜 풍요 땅으로 돌아가게 하매, 티앤쿰이 모로나이의 명령으로 풍요 땅 또는 성 주위에 웅덩이를 파는 일을 그들로 시작하게 하였더라. And it came to pass that after the Lamanites had finished burying their dead and also the dead of the Nephites, they were marched back into the land Bountiful; and Teancum, by the orders of Moroni, caused that they should commence laboring in digging a ditch round about the land, or the city, Bountiful.
앨 53:4 또 그들로 웅덩이의 안쪽 둑 위에 목재로 흉벽을 만들게 하매, 그들이 목재로 된 흉벽에 대하여 웅덩이로부터 흙을 던져 쌓아 올렸으니, 이같이 저들이 레이맨인들로 하여금 일을 하게 하기를 이윽고 목재와 흙으로 된 심히 높은 견고한 성벽으로 풍요 성 주위를 두르기까지 한지라. And he caused that they should build a breastwork of timbers upon the inner bank of the ditch; and they cast up dirt out of the ditch against the breastwork of timbers; and thus they did cause the Lamanites to labor until they had encircled the city of Bountiful round about with a strong wall of timbers and earth, to an exceeding height.
앨 53:5 이에 이후로 이 성이 영원히 심히 견고한 요새가 되었더라. 또 이 성에서 저들이 레이맨인 포로들을 감시하였으니 참으로 곧 그들 스스로의 손으로 짓게 한 성벽 안에서라. 이제 모로나이는 부득이 레이맨인들로 일을 하게 하였으니, 그들이 일하고 있는 동안 그들을 감시하기가 쉽고, 또 그가 레이맨인들에게 공격을 가해야 할 때 그의 전 병력을 사용하기를 원하였던 까닭이더라. And this city became an exceeding stronghold ever after; and in this city they did guard the prisoners of the Lamanites; yea, even within a wall which they had caused them to build with their own hands. Now Moroni was compelled to cause the Lamanites to labor, because it was easy to guard them while at their labor; and he desired all his forces when he should make an attack upon the Lamanites.
앨 53:6 이에 이렇게 되었나니 모로나이가 이같이 레이맨인들의 가장 강대한 군대 중 하나에게 승리를 거두고, 니파이 땅에서 레이맨인들의 가장 견고한 요새 중 하나였던 뮬레크 성을 점령하였으며, 또 이같이 그의 포로들을 붙잡아 두기 위한 요새도 또한 지었더라. And it came to pass that Moroni had thus gained a victory over one of the greatest of the armies of the Lamanites, and had obtained possession of the city of Mulek, which was one of the strongest holds of the Lamanites in the land of Nephi; and thus he had also built a stronghold to retain his prisoners.
앨 53:7 또 이렇게 되었나니 그 해에는 그가 더 이상 레이맨인들과 싸우려 하지 않고 자기 병사들을 시켜 전쟁을 위한 준비를 하게 하고, 또한 레이맨인들을 막기 위하여 방어 시설을 만들게 하고, 또한 기근과 고난에서 그들의 여자들과 그들의 자녀들을 건지며 그들의 군대를 위한 식량을 마련하게 하였더라. And it came to pass that he did no more attempt a battle with the Lamanites in that year, but he did employ his men in preparing for war, yea, and in making fortifications to guard against the Lamanites, yea, and also delivering their women and their children from famine and affliction, and providing food for their armies.
앨 53:8 그리고 이제 이렇게 되었나니 니파이인들 가운데 분쟁을 초래한, 그들 가운데 있은 어떤 음모로 말미암아 모로나이가 없는 사이 서해 남방에 있던 레이맨인들의 군대가 니파이인들에게서 어느 정도의 지역을 빼앗더니, 이윽고 그 지역에 있는 그들의 성읍을 다수 점령하였느니라. And now it came to pass that the armies of the Lamanites, on the west sea, south, while in the absence of Moroni on account of some intrigue amongst the Nephites, which caused dissensions amongst them, had gained some ground over the Nephites, yea, insomuch that they had obtained possession of a number of their cities in that part of the land.
앨 53:9 이리하여 그들 스스로의 가운데 있던 죄악으로 인하여, 참으로 그들 스스로의 가운데 있은 분쟁과 음모로 인하여 그들은 지극히 위험한 상황에 놓이게 되었더라. And thus because of iniquity amongst themselves, yea, because of dissensions and intrigue among themselves they were placed in the most dangerous circumstances.
앨 53:10 또 이제 보라, 내가 암몬 백성에 관하여 무엇인가 말할 것이 있노니, 이들이 처음에는 레이맨인이었으나 암몬과 그의 형제들에 의해, 또는 그보다는 하나님의 권능과 말씀에 의해 주께로 돌이킨 바 되었고, 또 제이라헤믈라 땅으로 인도함을 받고 내려와 그때로부터 계속하여 니파이인들의 보호를 받아 왔었느니라. And now behold, I have somewhat to say concerning the people of Ammon, who, in the beginning, were Lamanites; but by Ammon and his brethren, or rather by the power and word of God, they had been converted unto the Lord; and they had been brought down into the land of Zarahemla, and had ever since been protected by the Nephites.
앨 53:11 또 그들은 그 맹세로 인하여 그 형제들을 대적하여 무기를 들지 못했었나니, 이는 그들이 결코 다시는 피를 흘리지 않겠다고 맹세를 하였음이요, 또 자기의 맹세대로 그들은 멸망하였으리니, 참으로 암몬과 그의 형제들이 그들에 대해 가졌던 연민과 극진한 사랑이 아니었던들 그들은 그 형제들의 손에 빠짐을 스스로 감수하였을 것이라. And because of their oath they had been kept from taking up arms against their brethren; for they had taken an oath that they never would shed blood more; and according to their oath they would have perished; yea, they would have suffered themselves to have fallen into the hands of their brethren, had it not been for the pity and the exceeding love which Ammon and his brethren had had for them.
앨 53:12 이에 이 연고로 그들은 제이라헤믈라 땅으로 인도함을 받고 내려와, 계속 니파이인들의 보호를 받아왔었느니라. And for this cause they were brought down into the land of Zarahemla; and they ever had been protected by the Nephites.
앨 53:13 그러나 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 위험과 또 자기들을 위하여 니파이인들이 감당하고 있는 많은 고난과 환난을 보고는 동정심을 발하여 그들의 나라를 지키기 위하여 무기를 들기 원하였더라. But it came to pass that when they saw the danger, and the many afflictions and tribulations which the Nephites bore for them, they were moved with compassion and were desirous to take up arms in the defence of their country.
앨 53:14 그러나 보라, 그들이 바야흐로 그들의 전쟁 무기를 들려 하였을 때 힐라맨과 그의 형제들의 설득으로 제지되었으니, 이는 그들이 그 세운 바 맹세를 바야흐로 깨뜨리려 하였음이라. But behold, as they were about to take their weapons of war, they were overpowered by the persuasions of Helaman and his brethren, for they were about to break the oath which they had made.
앨 53:15 또 힐라맨은 그렇게 함으로써 그들이 그 영혼을 잃게 될까 두려워 하였나니, 그러므로 이 성약을 맺은 모든 자들은 어찌할 수 없이 그 형제들이 이 당시 그들의 위험한 상황에서 그들의 고난을 헤쳐 나가는 것을 바라볼 수밖에 없었느니라. And Helaman feared lest by so doing they should lose their souls; therefore all those who had entered into this covenant were compelled to behold their brethren wade through their afflictions, in their dangerous circumstances at this time.
앨 53:16 그러나 보라, 이렇게 되었나니 그들에게는 그 원수를 대적하여 스스로를 지키기 위해 자신의 전쟁 무기를 잡지 않겠다는 성약을 맺지 아니한 아들들이 많이 있었더라. 그리하여 그들은 이때에 무기를 들 수 있는 자들이 다 함께 모여 스스로를 니파이인이라 칭하였더라. But behold, it came to pass they had many sons, who had not entered into a covenant that they would not take their weapons of war to defend themselves against their enemies; therefore they did assemble themselves together at this time, as many as were able to take up arms, and they called themselves Nephites.
앨 53:17 그리고 니파이인들의 자유를 위해 싸우되, 참으로 자신들의 목숨을 버리기까지 그 땅을 지키기로 성약하였으니, 참으로 그들은 결코 그들의 자유를 포기하지 아니하고 여하한 경우에라도 니파이인들과 그들 자신을 속박으로부터 지키기 위하여 싸울 것을 성약하였더라. And they entered into a covenant to fight for the liberty of the Nephites, yea, to protect the land unto the laying down of their lives; yea, even they covenanted that they never would give up their liberty, but they would fight in all cases to protect the Nephites and themselves from bondage.
앨 53:18 이제 보라, 이 성약을 맺고 그 나라를 지키고자 그 전쟁 무기를 잡은 저 청년들이 이천 명이었더라. Now behold, there were two thousand of those young men, who entered into this covenant and took their weapons of war to defend their country.
앨 53:19 또 이제 보라, 그들이 지금까지 니파이인들에게 결코 장애가 된 일이 없었던 것같이 이제 이 시기에 또한 큰 힘이 되었으니, 이는 그들이 그 전쟁 무기를 잡고 힐라맨이 자기들의 지휘관이 되어 주기를 원하였음이라. And now behold, as they never had hitherto been a disadvantage to the Nephites, they became now at this period of time also a great support; for they took their weapons of war, and they would that Helaman should be their leader.
앨 53:20 또 그들은 다 청년들이었고 용기와 또한 힘과 활발함에 있어 심히 용맹스러웠거니와, 보라, 이것이 모두가 아니라 - 그들은 무엇이든지 그 맡은 일에 항상 충실한 자들이었더라. And they were all young men, and they were exceedingly valiant for courage, and also for strength and activity; but behold, this was not all—they were men who were true at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted.
앨 53:21 참으로 그들은 진실하고 진지한 자들이었으니, 이는 그들이 하나님의 계명을 지키고 그 앞에 정직하게 행하도록 가르침을 받았었음이더라. Yea, they were men of truth and soberness, for they had been taught to keep the commandments of God and to walk uprightly before him.
앨 53:22 이에 이제 이렇게 되었나니 힐라맨이 서해에 가까운 남방의 그 땅 경계에 있는 백성들을 돕고자 그의 이천 청년 병사의 머리가 되어 진군하였더라. And now it came to pass that Helaman did march at the head of his two thousand stripling soldiers, to the support of the people in the borders of the land on the south by the west sea.
앨 53:23 그리고 이같이 니파이인 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제이십팔년이 끝났느니라. And thus ended the twenty and eighth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
