앨 48:1 그리고 이제 이렇게 되었나니 아맬리카이아가 왕국을 얻음과 동시에 니파이인들을 대적하도록 레이맨인들의 마음을 고무하기 시작하였으니, 참으로 그가 사람들을 임명하여 그들의 망대에서 니파이인들을 대적하여 레이맨인들에게 말하게 하였더라. AND now it came to pass that, as soon as Amalickiah had obtained the kingdom he began to inspire the hearts of the Lamanites against the people of Nephi; yea, he did appoint men to speak unto the Lamanites from their towers, against the Nephites.
앨 48:2 또 그가 이같이 그들의 마음을 고무하여 니파이인들을 대적하게 하였으니, 결국 판사 치세 제십구년 말미에, 그가 이제까지의 자기의 계획을 달성하였음이요, 실로 레이맨인의 왕이 되어 그 온 땅과 실로 그 땅의 모든 백성 곧 레이맨인들뿐 아니라 니파이인들까지도 다스리기를 구하였음이더라. And thus he did inspire their hearts against the Nephites, insomuch that in the latter end of the nineteenth year of the reign of the judges, he having accomplished his designs thus far, yea, having been made king over the Lamanites, he sought also to reign over all the land, yea, and all the people who were in the land, the Nephites as well as the Lamanites.
앨 48:3 이러므로 그는 자기의 계획을 달성했었나니, 이는 그가 레이맨인들의 마음을 완악하게 하고 그들의 생각을 눈멀게 하며 그들을 충동하여 노하게 함으로써, 결국 니파이인들을 대적하여 싸우러 갈 수많은 무리를 함께 모았음이더라. Therefore he had accomplished his design, for he had hardened the hearts of the Lamanites and blinded their minds, and stirred them up to anger, insomuch that he had gathered together a numerous host to go to battle against the Nephites.
앨 48:4 이는 그가 자기 백성의 수효가 많음으로 인하여, 니파이인들을 정복하여 속박하기로 결심하였음이라. For he was determined, because of the greatness of the number of his people, to overpower the Nephites and to bring them into bondage.
앨 48:5 그리하여 그가 조램인 중에서 총대장들을 임명하였으니, 이는 이들이 니파이인들의 병력과 그들의 대피 장소와 그들 성읍들의 가장 약한 부분을 가장 잘 알고 있었음이라. 이러므로 그가 이들을 임명하여 자기 군대의 총대장들을 삼았더라. And thus he did appoint chief captains of the Zoramites, they being the most acquainted with the strength of the Nephites, and their places of resort, and the weakest parts of their cities; therefore he appointed them to be chief captains over his armies.
앨 48:6 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 그 진을 취하고, 광야에서 제이라헤믈라 땅을 향하여 이동해 나아갔더라. And it came to pass that they took their camp, and moved forth toward the land of Zarahemla in the wilderness.
앨 48:7 이제 이렇게 되었나니 아맬리카이아가 이처럼 기만과 속임으로 권력을 얻고 있는 동안, 다른 한편으로 모로나이는 백성의 마음이 주 그들의 하나님께 충실하도록 준비시키고 있었더라. Now it came to pass that while Amalickiah had thus been obtaining power by fraud and deceit, Moroni, on the other hand, had been preparing the minds of the people to be faithful unto the Lord their God.
앨 48:8 참으로 그는 니파이인들의 군대를 강화하며, 작은 보루들, 곧 대피 장소들을 구축하되, 주위로 흙둑을 쌓아 올려 그의 군대를 둘러싸고, 또한 그들의 성읍들과 그들 땅의 경계 주위로, 참으로 그 땅 주위를 다 돌아가며 석벽을 쌓아 그들을 둘렀더라. Yea, he had been strengthening the armies of the Nephites, and erecting small forts, or places of resort; throwing up banks of earth round about to enclose his armies, and also building walls of stone to encircle them about, round about their cities and the borders of their lands; yea, all round about the land.
앨 48:9 또 그들의 방어 시설이 가장 약한 곳에는 더 많은 수의 병사를 배치하였나니, 이같이 그가 니파이인들이 소유하고 있는 땅의 방비를 강화하고 그 땅을 견고히 하였더라. And in their weakest fortifications he did place the greater number of men; and thus he did fortify and strengthen the land which was possessed by the Nephites.
앨 48:10 또 이같이 그는 그들이 주 그들의 하나님을 위해 살며, 그 원수들이 그리스도인들의 대의라 일컫는 바를 지키도록, 그들의 자유와 그들의 땅과 그들의 아내와 그들의 자녀와 그들의 평화를 지킬 준비를 하고 있었더라. And thus he was preparing to support their liberty, their lands, their wives, and their children, and their peace, and that they might live unto the Lord their God, and that they might maintain that which was called by their enemies the cause of Christians.
앨 48:11 또 모로나이는 강하고 용맹한 사람이라. 그는 완전한 이해를 갖춘 사람이었으니, 참으로 피 흘리는 일을 기뻐하지 아니하는 사람이요, 그 영혼이 자유를 기뻐하며 그 나라와 그 형제들이 속박과 노예 상태에서 벗어난 자유를 누리는 것을 기뻐하는 사람이었으며, And Moroni was a strong and a mighty man; he was a man of a perfect understanding; yea, a man that did not delight in bloodshed; a man whose soul did joy in the liberty and the freedom of his country, and his brethren from bondage and slavery;
앨 48:12 참으로 그의 하나님이 그 백성에게 내려 주시는 많은 특권과 축복에 대하여 그 하나님께 드리는 감사로 그 마음이 충일한 사람이요, 그 백성의 복리와 안전을 위하여 심히 수고하는 사람이었더라. Yea, a man whose heart did swell with thanksgiving to his God, for the many privileges and blessings which he bestowed upon his people; a man who did labor exceedingly for the welfare and safety of his people.
앨 48:13 참으로 또한 그는 그리스도의 신앙 안에서 견고한 사람이었나니, 그는 그 피를 잃기까지라도 자기 백성과 자기의 권리와 자기의 나라와 자기의 종교를 지키기로 맹세하였더라. Yea, and he was a man who was firm in the faith of Christ, and he had sworn with an oath to defend his people, his rights, and his country, and his religion, even to the loss of his blood.
앨 48:14 이제 니파이인들은 그들의 적에 대항하여, 필요하다면 피 흘리기까지라도 스스로를 지키도록 가르침을 받았으며, 또한 적에 대항하여 스스로의 생명을 지켜야 할 때를 제외하고는, 결코 공격을 가하거나, 결코 검을 치켜들지 않도록 가르침을 받았더라. Now the Nephites were taught to defend themselves against their enemies, even to the shedding of blood if it were necessary; yea, and they were also taught never to give an offense, yea, and never to raise the sword except it were against an enemy, except it were to preserve their lives.
앨 48:15 또 이것이 그들의 신앙이었으니, 곧 그렇게 함으로써 하나님이 그들을 그 땅에서 번성하게 하시리라는 것, 즉 달리 말해서 만일 그들이 하나님의 계명을 충실히 지키면 하나님이 그들을 그 땅에서 번성하게 하시되, 참으로 그들이 처한 위험에 따라, 피하도록 경고하시거나, 전쟁을 위하여 준비하도록 경고하실 것이며, And this was their faith, that by so doing God would prosper them in the land, or in other words, if they were faithful in keeping the commandments of God that he would prosper them in the land; yea, warn them to flee, or to prepare for war, according to their danger;
앨 48:16 그리고 또한 하나님은 적으로부터 스스로를 방어하기 위하여 어디로 가야 할 것인가를 그들에게 알려 주시고, 그렇게 함으로써 주께서 그들을 구원하시리라는 것이었더라. 이것이 모로나이의 신앙이었고, 그 마음은 이를 영광으로 여겼으니, 피흘림을 그리 여긴 것이 아니라 선을 행함을, 자기 백성을 보전함을, 참으로 하나님의 계명을 지킴을, 또한 불의를 물리침을 그리 여긴 것이더라. And also, that God would make it known unto them whither they should go to defend themselves against their enemies, and by so doing, the Lord would deliver them; and this was the faith of Moroni, and his heart did glory in it; not in the shedding of blood but in doing good, in preserving his people, yea, in keeping the commandments of God, yea, and resisting iniquity.
앨 48:17 과연 진실로 진실로 내가 너희에게 이르노니, 모든 사람이 과거에나, 현재에나, 장차 언제까지나 모로나이와 같을진대, 보라, 지옥의 권세들이 영원토록 흔들렸을 것이요, 참으로 악마가 결단코 사람의 자녀들의 마음을 다스릴 권능을 갖지 못하리라. Yea, verily, verily I say unto you, if all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men.
앨 48:18 보라, 그는 모사이야의 아들 암몬과 같은 사람이요, 또한 참으로 모사이야의 다른 아들들과도 같고, 또한 앨마와 그의 아들들과도 같은 사람이었으니, 이는 이들이 모두 하나님의 사람이었음이라. Behold, he was a man like unto Ammon, the son of Mosiah, yea, and even the other sons of Mosiah, yea, and also Alma and his sons, for they were all men of God.
앨 48:19 이제 보라, 힐라맨과 그의 형제들도 백성에게 봉사함이 모로나이 못지 아니하였나니, 이는 그들이 하나님의 말씀을 전파하고, 누구든지 그들의 말에 귀 기울이고자 하는 사람에게는 다 회개에 이르는 침례를 베풀었음이라. Now behold, Helaman and his brethren were no less serviceable unto the people than was Moroni; for they did preach the word of God, and they did baptize unto repentance all men whosoever would hearken unto their words.
앨 48:20 또 이같이 그들이 나아가매, 그들의 말씀으로 인하여 백성들이 스스로 겸손한지라, 그들이 주의 은총을 크게 입었고, 그리하여 참으로 사 년 동안, 그들 가운데 전쟁이나 다툼이 없었느니라. And thus they went forth, and the people did humble themselves because of their words, insomuch that they were highly favored of the Lord, and thus they were free from wars and contentions among themselves, yea, even for the space of four years.
앨 48:21 그러나 이미 내가 말한 것같이, 제십구년 말미에, 그들 중에는 평화가 있었음에도 불구하고, 그들은 그들의 형제 레이맨인들과 내키지 않으면서도 억지로 전쟁을 하지 않으면 안 되게 되었더라. But, as I have said, in the latter end of the nineteenth year, yea, notwithstanding their peace amongst themselves, they were compelled reluctantly to contend with their brethren, the Lamanites.
앨 48:22 참으로 또한 요컨대, 그들이 매우 꺼려하였음에도 불구하고, 그들의 전쟁은 레이맨인들과 더불어 여러 해 동안 도무지 그치지 아니하였더라. Yea, and in fine, their wars never did cease for the space of many years with the Lamanites, notwithstanding their much reluctance.
앨 48:23 이제 그들은 레이맨인들을 대적하여 무기 들기를 민망히 여겼으니, 이는 그들이 피 흘리기를 기뻐하지 아니한 까닭이요, 또한 이것이 모두가 아니니 - 그들은 그처럼 많은 그들의 형제들을 하나님을 만날 준비를 갖추지 못한 채로, 이 세상에서 영원한 세상으로 보내는 도구가 됨을 민망히 여겼음이라. Now, they were sorry to take up arms against the Lamanites, because they did not delight in the shedding of blood; yea, and this was not all—they were sorry to be the means of sending so many of their brethren out of this world into an eternal world, unprepared to meet their God.
앨 48:24 그러나 그들은 한때 그들의 형제였다가 그들의 교회로부터 떨어져 나간 후, 그들을 떠나 레이맨인들에게 합류함으로써, 그들을 멸하려한 자들의 야만적인 잔혹함에 자신들의 아내와 자신들의 자녀들이 살육 당하도록 그들의 목숨을 버리는 일은 용납할 수 없었더라. Nevertheless, they could not suffer to lay down their lives, that their wives and their children should be massacred by the barbarous cruelty of those who were once their brethren, yea, and had dissented from their church, and had left them and had gone to destroy them by joining the Lamanites.
앨 48:25 참으로 그들은 하나님의 계명을 지킬 자가 하나라도 있는 동안에는, 그들의 형제들이 니파이인들의 피를 흘려 놓고 기뻐하는 것을 참을 수 없었나니, 이는 주의 약속은 만일 그들이 그의 계명을 지킨다면 그들이 이 땅에서 번성하리라는 것이었음이더라. Yea, they could not bear that their brethren should rejoice over the blood of the Nephites, so long as there were any who should keep the commandments of God, for the promise of the Lord was, if they should keep his commandments they should prosper in the land.
