소개 앰모론과 모로나이가 포로 교환을 협상함 - 모로나이가 레이맨인들에게 철수하고 살인적인 공격을 중지할 것을 요구함 - 앰모론이 니파이인들이 무기를 버리고 레이맨인들에게 복속될 것을 요구함. 주전 63년경. Ammoron and Moroni negotiate for the exchange of prisoners—Moroni demands that the Lamanites withdraw and cease their murderous attacks—Ammoron demands that the Nephites lay down their arms and become subject to the Lamanites. [About 63 B.C.]
앨 54:1 그리고 이제 이렇게 되었나니 판사 치세 제이십구년 초에 앰모론이 모로나이에게 사람을 보내어 포로를 교환할 것을 희망하였느니라. AND now it came to pass in the commencement of the twenty and ninth year of the judges, that Ammoron sent unto Moroni desiring that he would exchange prisoners.
앨 54:2 이에 이렇게 되었나니 모로나이가 이 요청에 심히 기쁜 마음을 금할 수 없었으니, 이는 레이맨인 포로들을 부양하기 위하여 나누어 주고 있는 식량으로 자기 백성을 부양하기를 원하였음이요, 또한 자기의 백성으로 자기의 군대를 강화하기 원하였음이라. And it came to pass that Moroni felt to rejoice exceedingly at this request, for he desired the provisions which were imparted for the support of the Lamanite prisoners for the support of his own people; and he also desired his own people for the strengthening of his army.
앨 54:3 이제 레이맨인들은 여자들과 아이들을 많이 잡아갔고, 모로나이의 포로 곧 모로나이가 잡았던 포로 가운데는 여자나 아이가 하나도 없었으므로, 모로나이는 가능한 한 레이맨인들에게서 많은 니파이인 포로들을 받아 내고자 한 가지 계책을 정하였더라. Now the Lamanites had taken many women and children, and there was not a woman nor a child among all the prisoners of Moroni, or the prisoners whom Moroni had taken; therefore Moroni resolved upon a stratagem to obtain as many prisoners of the Nephites from the Lamanites as it were possible.
앨 54:4 그리하여 그가 서한을 한 통 써서 앰모론의 종의 편에 보내었으니 곧 모로나이에게 서한을 가져온 그 종이더라. 이제 그가 앰모론에게 쓴 말이 이러하니라 이르되, Therefore he wrote an epistle, and sent it by the servant of Ammoron, the same who had brought an epistle to Moroni. Now these are the words which he wrote unto Ammoron, saying:
앨 54:5 보라, 앰모론이여, 나는 네가 내 백성을 대적하여 벌여 온 이 전쟁, 곧 다시 말해 네 형이 그들을 대적하여 벌였고 그가 죽은 후 네가 여전히 계속하고자 결심하고 있는 이 전쟁에 관하여 얼마간 네게 썼노라. Behold, Ammoron, I have written unto you somewhat concerning this war which ye have waged against my people, or rather which thy brother hath waged against them, and which ye are still determined to carry on after his death.
앨 54:6 보라, 내가 하나님의 공의와 그의 전능한 진노의 칼에 관하여 얼마간 네게 말해 주고자 하노니, 네가 회개하고 너의 본토 곧 네 소유의 땅인 니파이 땅으로 네 군대를 거두지 아니할진대, 그 칼은 과연 너희 머리 위에 걸려 있느니라. Behold, I would tell you somewhat concerning the justice of God, and the sword of his almighty wrath, which doth hang over you except ye repent and withdraw your armies into your own lands, or the land of your possessions, which is the land of Nephi.
앨 54:7 참으로 네가 능히 이러한 말에 귀 기울일 수 있다면 내가 이를 네게 이르리라. 참으로 나는 네가 회개하고 너의 살인하려는 목적을 거두고, 네 군대와 더불어 너의 본토로 돌아가지 아니할진대, 너나 네 형과 같은 그러한 살인자들을 맞으려고 기다리고 있는 저 끔찍한 지옥에 관하여 네게 이르리라. Yea, I would tell you these things if ye were capable of hearkening unto them; yea, I would tell you concerning that awful hell that awaits to receive such murderers as thou and thy brother have been, except ye repent and withdraw your murderous purposes, and return with your armies to your own lands.
앨 54:8 그러나 네가 일찍이 이러한 것을 거부하고 주의 백성을 대적하여 싸워 왔으니, 네가 다시 그리할 줄로 내가 기대하여도 좋으리라. But as ye have once rejected these things, and have fought against the people of the Lord, even so I may expect you will do it again.
앨 54:9 또 이제 보라, 우리는 너를 맞을 준비가 되어 있느니라. 그뿐 아니라 네가 네 목적을 거두지 아니할진대, 보라, 너는 네가 거부한 그 하나님의 진노를 너희 위에 끌어내리리니, 너희가 온전히 멸망당하리라. And now behold, we are prepared to receive you; yea, and except you withdraw your purposes, behold, ye will pull down the wrath of that God whom you have rejected upon you, even to your utter destruction.
앨 54:10 그러나 주께서 살아 계심같이 너희가 물러가지 아니할진대, 우리의 군대가 너희를 엄습하리니 너희가 곧 죽음을 당하게 되리라. 이는 우리가 우리의 성읍들과 우리의 땅을 보전할 것임이요, 또한 우리의 종교와 우리 하나님의 대의를 지킬 것임이니라. But, as the Lord liveth, our armies shall come upon you except ye withdraw, and ye shall soon be visited with death, for we will retain our cities and our lands; yea, and we will maintain our religion and the cause of our God.
앨 54:11 그러나 보라, 내 생각에 내가 이러한 일에 관하여 네게 말함이 헛되도다. 또는 내 생각에 너는 지옥의 자식이로다. 그러므로 내가 포로를 교환하지 않겠다고 네게 고함으로써 나의 서한을 끝마치려 하노라. 그러나 만일 너희가 포로 한 명에 대하여, 남자 한 명과 그 아내와 그 자녀들을 넘겨주겠다는 조건이라면 가하리니, 너희가 그리할 것 같으면 내가 교환하리라. But behold, it supposeth me that I talk to you concerning these things in vain; or it supposeth me that thou art a child of hell; therefore I will close my epistle by telling you that I will not exchange prisoners, save it be on conditions that ye will deliver up a man and his wife and his children, for one prisoner; if this be the case that ye will do it, I will exchange.
앨 54:12 또 보라, 너희가 이리하지 아니하면 내가 나의 군대와 더불어 너희를 치러 갈 것이라. 참으로 내가 나의 여자들과 나의 아이들까지도 무장시키고 너희를 치러 가서, 우리의 첫 번 기업의 땅인 너희의 본토까지라도 너희를 따라가리니, 정녕 그때 피에는 피로, 참으로 생명에는 생명으로 갚음이 될 것이며, 또 너희가 지면에서 멸절되기까지 내가 너희와 싸우리로다. And behold, if ye do not this, I will come against you with my armies; yea, even I will arm my women and my children, and I will come against you, and I will follow you even into your own land, which is the land of our first inheritance; yea, and it shall be blood for blood, yea, life for life; and I will give you battle even until you are destroyed from off the face of the earth.
앨 54:13 보라, 나는 노하였고 나의 백성들도 그러하니라. 너희는 우리를 죽이기를 구하였거니와 우리는 다만 스스로를 지키기를 구하였노라. 그러나 보라, 만일 너희가 더 이상 우리를 멸하기를 구할진대 우리는 너희를 멸하기를 구할 것이요 또한 우리는 우리 땅, 우리 첫 번 기업의 땅을 구하리로다. Behold, I am in my anger, and also my people; ye have sought to murder us, and we have only sought to defend ourselves. But behold, if ye seek to destroy us more we will seek to destroy you; yea, and we will seek our land, the land of our first inheritance.
앨 54:14 이제 나는 내 서한을 끝맺노라. 나는 모로나이요 니파이 백성의 지휘관이니라. Now I close my epistle. I am Moroni; I am a leader of the people of the Nephites.
앨 54:15 이제 이렇게 되었나니 앰모론이 이 서한을 받고 노하여 모로나이에게 또 다른 서한을 썼으니 그가 쓴 말이 이러하니라. 이르되, Now it came to pass that Ammoron, when he had received this epistle, was angry; and he wrote another epistle unto Moroni, and these are the words which he wrote, saying:
앨 54:16 나는 레이맨인의 왕 앰모론이요 너희가 살해한 아맬리카이아의 동생이니라. 보라, 내가 그의 피를 너희에게 갚아 주리라. 또 내가 나의 군대와 더불어 너희를 치리니 나는 너희의 위협을 두려워하지 아니함이니라.

I am Ammoron, the king of the Lamanites; I am the brother of Amalickiah whom ye have murdered. Behold, I will avenge his blood upon you, yea, and I will come upon you with my armies for I fear not your threatenings.
앨 54:17 이는 보라, 너희의 조상들이 그 형제들에게 부당히 행하여, 다스림에 대한 권리가 당연히 그들에게 속하였음에도 그들에게서 그들의 권리를 빼앗았음이니, For behold, your fathers did wrong their brethren, insomuch that they did rob them of their right to the government when it rightly belonged unto them.
앨 54:18 이제 보라, 만일 너희가 너희의 무기를 내려놓고 스스로 복종하여 다스릴 권한을 당연히 지닌 자들의 다스림을 받아들이면, 그리하면 내가 내 백성들로 하여금 그들의 무기를 내려놓게 하고 더 이상 싸우지 않게 하리라. And now behold, if ye will lay down your arms, and subject yourselves to be governed by those to whom the government doth rightly belong, then will I cause that my people shall lay down their weapons and shall be at war no more.
앨 54:19 보라, 너희는 나와 내 백성에 대하여 많은 위협을 내뿜었으나, 보라 우리는 너희의 위협을 두려워하지 아니하노라. Behold, ye have breathed out many threatenings against me and my people; but behold, we fear not your threatenings.
앨 54:20 그럼에도 나의 전사들을 위한 나의 식량을 보전하기 위해 기쁘게 너희의 요구대로 포로들을 교환할 것을 허락하노니, 우리는 니파이인들을 우리의 권세에 복종시키든지, 아니면 그들을 영원히 멸절시킬 때까지 영원히 전쟁을 수행하리라. Nevertheless, I will grant to exchange prisoners according to your request, gladly, that I may preserve my food for my men of war; and we will wage a war which shall be eternal, either to the subjecting the Nephites to our authority or to their eternal extinction.
앨 54:21 또 너희의 말에 우리가 거부하였다 한 그 하나님에 관하여서는, 보라, 우리는 그러한 존재를 알지 못하며, 너희도 알지 못하거니와 만일 그러한 존재가 있다 할진대, 모르긴 해도 그가 너희와 마찬가지로 우리도 지었을 것이라. And as concerning that God whom ye say we have rejected, behold, we know not such a being; neither do ye; but if it so be that there is such a being, we know not but that he hath made us as well as you.
앨 54:22 또 만일 악마나 지옥이 있다 할진대, 보라 너희가 살해한 나의 형 곧 너희가 그러한 곳에 갔으리라고 비친 나의 형과 함께 거하도록 그가 너희를 거기로 보내지 않겠느냐? 그러나 보라, 이러한 일들은 아무 상관이 없도다. And if it so be that there is a devil and a hell, behold will he not send you there to dwell with my brother whom ye have murdered, whom ye have hinted that he hath gone to such a place? But behold these things matter not.
앨 54:23 나는 앰모론이요, 너희 조상들이 억지로 예루살렘에서 이끌어 낸 조램의 후손이니라.

I am Ammoron, and a descendant of Zoram, whom your fathers pressed and brought out of Jerusalem.
앨 54:24 또 이제 보라, 나는 담대한 레이맨인이니라. 보라, 이 전쟁을 치뤄온 것은 그들이 받은 부당함을 갚기 위한 것이며 다스림에 대한 그들의 권리를 지키고 또 얻기 위한 것이니 모로나이에게 보내는 나의 서한을 끝맺노라. And behold now, I am a bold Lamanite; behold, this war hath been waged to avenge their wrongs, and to maintain and to obtain their rights to the government; and I close my epistle to Moroni.
