앨 51:1 그리고 이제 이렇게 되었나니 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제이십오년 초에, 그들이 리하이 백성과 모리앤톤 백성 사이에 그들의 땅에 관하여 평화를 이루고, 제이십오년을 화평한 가운데 시작하였으나, AND now it came to pass in the commencement of the twenty and fifth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi, they having established peace between the people of Lehi and the people of Morianton concerning their lands, and having commenced the twenty and fifth year in peace;
앨 51:2 그럼에도 불구하고 그들이 그 땅에 전적인 화평을 오래 유지하지 못하였나니, 이는 대판사 페이호랜에 관하여 백성들 사이에 분쟁이 생겼음이라. 이는 보라, 백성 가운데 법률의 몇몇 특정한 사항을 변경하기를 원하는 사람들이 일부 있었음이라. Nevertheless, they did not long maintain an entire peace in the land, for there began to be a contention among the people concerning the chief judge Pahoran; for behold, there were a part of the people who desired that a few particular points of the law should be altered.
앨 51:3 그러나 보라, 페이호랜은 법률을 변경하거나 변경하도록 용납하기를 원하지 아니하였던지라, 법 개정에 관한 그들의 청원을 들여보낸 자들의 소리를 듣지 아니하였더라. But behold, Pahoran would not alter nor suffer the law to be altered; therefore, he did not hearken to those who had sent in their voices with their petitions concerning the altering of the law.
앨 51:4 그리하여 법이 개정되기를 원하는 자들이 그에게 노하여, 그가 더 이상 그 땅의 대판사가 되지 않기를 원하매, 그 문제에 관하여 격렬한 논쟁이 일어났으나, 피를 흘리는 데까지는 이르지 아니하였더라. Therefore, those who were desirous that the law should be altered were angry with him, and desired that he should no longer be chief judge over the land; therefore there arose a warm dispute concerning the matter, but not unto bloodshed.
앨 51:5 또 이렇게 되었나니 페이호랜이 판사직에서 물러나기를 원하는 자들은 왕당파라 일컬어졌으니, 이는 그들이 자유로운 정치 체제를 전복하고 그 땅에 왕을 세울 수 있도록 법이 개정되기를 원하였음이요, And it came to pass that those who were desirous that Pahoran should be dethroned from the judgment-seat were called king-men, for they were desirous that the law should be altered in a manner to overthrow the free government and to establish a king over the land.
앨 51:6 또 페이호랜이 그 땅의 대판사로 그대로 있기를 원하는 자들은 스스로 자유파라 하는 이름을 취한지라, 그들 중의 분열이 이러하였으니, 이는 자유파들이 자유로운 정치 체제에 의하여 저들의 권리와 저들의 종교의 특권을 지키기로 맹세 곧 언약하였음이더라. And those who were desirous that Pahoran should remain chief judge over the land took upon them the name of freemen; and thus was the division among them, for the freemen had sworn or covenanted to maintain their rights and the privileges of their religion by a free government.
앨 51:7 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그들의 이 분쟁 문제가 백성의 소리로 해결되었더라. 또 이렇게 되었나니 백성의 소리가 자유파를 지지하매, 페이호랜이 판사직을 유지하니, 이로 말미암아 페이호랜의 형제들과 또한 많은 자유의 백성 가운데 크게 기뻐함이 있었고, 이들이 또한 왕당파들을 잠잠하게 하매, 저들이 감히 반대하지 못하고 자유의 대의를 지키지 않을 수 없게 되었더라. And it came to pass that this matter of their contention was settled by the voice of the people. And it came to pass that the voice of the people came in favor of the freemen, and Pahoran retained the judgment-seat, which caused much rejoicing among the brethren of Pahoran and also many of the people of liberty, who also put the king-men to silence, that they durst not oppose but were obliged to maintain the cause of freedom.
앨 51:8 이제 왕을 선호한 자들은 높은 신분의 태생인 자들이었고, 그들은 왕이 되기를 구하였으니, 그들은 백성들에 대한 권력과 권세를 추구하는 자들의 지지를 얻었더라. Now those who were in favor of kings were those of high birth, and they sought to be kings; and they were supported by those who sought power and authority over the people.
앨 51:9 그러나 보라, 이때는 니파이 백성 가운데 그러한 분쟁이 있기에는 위급한 시기였으니, 이는 보라, 아맬리카이아가 다시 레이맨인 백성의 마음을 충동하여 니파이인 백성을 대적하게 하고, 그의 땅 모든 지역으로부터 군사들을 함께 모으며, 부지런히 전쟁을 준비하고 있었음이라, 이는 그가 모로나이의 피를 마시겠다고 맹세했었음이더라. But behold, this was a critical time for such contentions to be among the people of Nephi; for behold, Amalickiah had again stirred up the hearts of the people of the Lamanites against the people of the Nephites, and he was gathering together soldiers from all parts of his land, and arming them, and preparing for war with all diligence; for he had sworn to drink the blood of Moroni.
앨 51:10 그러나 보라, 우리는 그가 한 약속이 성급한 것이었음을 보게 되리라. 그럼에도 불구하고 그는 니파이인들을 치러 오기 위하여 스스로 준비하고 자기 군대도 준비시켰더라. But behold, we shall see that his promise which he made was rash; nevertheless, he did prepare himself and his armies to come to battle against the Nephites.

Now his armies were not so great as they had hitherto been, because of the many thousands who had been slain by the hand of the Nephites; but notwithstanding their great loss, Amalickiah had gathered together a wonderfully great army, insomuch that he feared not to come down to the land of Zarahemla.
앨 51:12 참으로 아맬리카이아가 레이맨인들을 거느리고 친히 내려왔으니, 때는 판사 치세 제이십오년이요, 또 이는 그들이 대판사 페이호랜에 관한 그들의 분쟁을 해결하기 시작한 것과 같은 때이었더라. Yea, even Amalickiah did himself come down, at the head of the Lamanites. And it was in the twenty and fifth year of the reign of the judges; and it was at the same time that they had begun to settle the affairs of their contentions concerning the chief judge, Pahoran.
앨 51:13 또 이렇게 되었나니 왕당파라 일컫는 사람들이 레이맨인들이 그들을 치려고 내려오고 있다는 것을 듣고, 그 마음에 기뻐하여 무기 들기를 거절하였으니, 이는 그들이 그들의 대판사와, 또한 자유의 백성들에게 심히 노하였던지라, 자기 나라를 지키기 위해 무기를 들려 하지 아니하였음이더라. And it came to pass that when the men who were called king-men had heard that the Lamanites were coming down to battle against them, they were glad in their hearts; and they refused to take up arms, for they were so wroth with the chief judge, and also with the people of liberty, that they would not take up arms to defend their country.
앨 51:14 이에 이렇게 되었나니 모로나이가 이를 보고, 또한 레이맨인들이 그 땅의 경계로 들어오고 있는 것을 보고는, 자기가 보전하기 위하여 그토록 부지런히 수고해 온 그 백성의 완강함으로 인하여 심히 노하였더라. 참으로 그가 심히 노하여, 그 영혼이 그들에 대한 분노로 가득하게 되었더라. And it came to pass that when Moroni saw this, and also saw that the Lamanites were coming into the borders of the land, he was exceedingly wroth because of the stubbornness of those people whom he had labored with so much diligence to preserve; yea, he was exceedingly wroth; his soul was filled with anger against them.
앨 51:15 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그가 백성의 소리와 함께 나라의 통치자에게 청원을 보내어, 그가 이를 읽고, 자기(모로나이)에게 이반자들을 강제하여 그들의 나라를 지키게 하거나 아니면 그들을 사형에 처할 수 있는 권세를 줄 것을 요청하였더라. And it came to pass that he sent a petition, with the voice of the people, unto the governor of the land, desiring that he should read it, and give him (Moroni) power to compel those dissenters to defend their country or to put them to death.
앨 51:16 이는 그의 첫째 임무가 백성 중의 그러한 분쟁과 다툼을 종식시키는 것이었음이니, 이는 보라, 이것이 지금까지 그들의 모든 멸망의 한 원인이었음이라. 이에 이렇게 되었나니 백성의 소리를 좇아 허락이 내려졌느니라. For it was his first care to put an end to such contentions and dissensions among the people; for behold, this had been hitherto a cause of all their destruction. And it came to pass that it was granted according to the voice of the people.
앨 51:17 이에 이렇게 되었나니 모로나이가 명령을 내리되 그의 군대가 왕당파 사람들을 치러 가서, 그들의 교만과 그들의 고귀한 신분을 헐어 내리고 그들을 땅에까지 낮추든지, 그렇지 아니하면 그들이 무기를 들고 자유의 대의를 지지하여야 할 것을 명하였더라. And it came to pass that Moroni commanded that his army should go against those king-men, to pull down their pride and their nobility and level them with the earth, or they should take up arms and support the cause of liberty.
앨 51:18 이에 이렇게 되었나니 군대가 그들을 치러 진군해 나아가, 그들의 교만과 그들의 고귀한 신분을 헐어 내리매, 그들이 모로나이의 병사들을 대적하여 싸우고자 그들의 전쟁 무기를 들다가 베임을 당하여 땅에 눕히었느니라. And it came to pass that the armies did march forth against them; and they did pull down their pride and their nobility, insomuch that as they did lift their weapons of war to fight against the men of Moroni they were hewn down and leveled to the earth.
앨 51:19 이에 이렇게 되었나니 칼에 베임을 당한 이반자들이 사천이었고, 전투에서 죽임을 당하지 아니한 그들의 지도자들은 잡혀 옥에 던져졌으니, 이는 이 시기에 그들을 재판할 시간이 없었음이라. And it came to pass that there were four thousand of those dissenters who were hewn down by the sword; and those of their leaders who were not slain in battle were taken and cast into prison, for there was no time for their trials at this period.
앨 51:20 그리고 나머지 이반자들은 칼에 맞아 땅에 쓰러지기보다는 자유의 기에 투항한지라, 강제로 그들의 망대 위에와, 그들의 성읍에 자유의 기치를 게양하게 하고, 그들의 나라를 지키기 위해 무기를 들게 하였더라. And the remainder of those dissenters, rather than be smitten down to the earth by the sword, yielded to the standard of liberty, and were compelled to hoist the title of liberty upon their towers, and in their cities, and to take up arms in defence of their country.
앨 51:21 그리고 이같이 모로나이가 왕당파를 종식시키매, 왕당파라는 호칭으로 알려지는 자가 하나도 없게 되었으며, 또 이같이 그가 고귀한 혈통을 주장하던 무리의 완강함과 교만을 종식시키매, 그들이 낮아져서 그 형제들과 같이 스스로 겸손하여졌고, 그들의 자유 곧 속박으로부터의 자유를 위하여 용감하게 싸우게 되었더라. And thus Moroni put an end to those king-men, that there were not any known by the appellation of king-men; and thus he put an end to the stubbornness and the pride of those people who professed the blood of nobility; but they were brought down to humble themselves like unto their brethren, and to fight valiantly for their freedom from bondage.
앨 51:22 보라 이렇게 되었나니 모로나이가 이같이 자기 백성 가운데 있은 전쟁과 다툼을 진압하고, 그들로 하여금 평화와 문명을 받아들이게 하고, 레이맨인들과의 전쟁에 대비한 준비를 하기 위하여 규정을 만들고 있는 사이, 보라, 레이맨인들이 해안에 가까운 변경에 있는 모로나이 땅에 들어왔더라. Behold, it came to pass that while Moroni was thus breaking down the wars and contentions among his own people, and subjecting them to peace and civilization, and making regulations to prepare for war against the Lamanites, behold, the Lamanites had come into the land of Moroni, which was in the borders by the seashore.
앨 51:23 또 이렇게 되었나니 모로나이 성에 있던 니파이인들이 충분히 강하지 못하였던지라, 아맬리카이아가 그들을 몰아 내고 많이 죽였으며, 또 이렇게 되었나니 아맬리카이아가 그 성을 점령하되, 참으로 그들의 방어 시설을 다 점령하였더라. And it came to pass that the Nephites were not sufficiently strong in the city of Moroni; therefore Amalickiah did drive them, slaying many. And it came to pass that Amalickiah took possession of the city, yea, possession of all their fortifications.
앨 51:24 이에 모로나이 성에서 도망한 자들이 니파이하 성으로 왔고, 리하이 성의 백성도 스스로 함께 모여, 예비하고 레이맨인들을 맞이하여 싸울 준비가 다 되었더라. And those who fled out of the city of Moroni came to the city of Nephihah; and also the people of the city of Lehi gathered themselves together, and made preparations and were ready to receive the Lamanites to battle.
앨 51:25 그러나 이렇게 되었나니 아맬리카이아가 레이맨인들의 니파이하 성 치러 감을 용납하고자 아니하고, 그들을 해안 가까이에 머무르게 하되, 각 성읍에 병사들을 남겨 두어 성을 지키며 방어하게 하였느니라. But it came to pass that Amalickiah would not suffer the Lamanites to go against the city of Nephihah to battle, but kept them down by the seashore, leaving men in every city to maintain and defend it.
앨 51:26 또 이같이 저가 계속하여 많은 성읍을 니파이하 성과 리하이 성과 모리앤톤 성과 옴너 성과 기드 성과 뮬레크 성을 점령하였으니, 이 모두는 바닷가에 가까운 동쪽 변방에 있더라. And thus he went on, taking possession of many cities, the city of Nephihah, and the city of Lehi, and the city of Morianton, and the city of Omner, and the city of Gid, and the city of Mulek, all of which were on the east borders by the seashore.
앨 51:27 또 이같이 레이맨인들이 그들의 무수한 군사로 그처럼 많은 성읍들을 아맬리카이아의 계교로써 손에 넣었나니, 이 모두는 모로나이가 방비를 강화하는 방식을 좇아 견고하게 방비가 강화되었었으나, 이 모두가 레이맨인들을 위하여 견고한 진지를 제공하게 되었더라. And thus had the Lamanites obtained, by the cunning of Amalickiah, so many cities, by their numberless hosts, all of which were strongly fortified after the manner of the fortifications of Moroni; all of which afforded strongholds for the Lamanites.
앨 51:28 또 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 풍요 땅의 경계로 진군하였으며, 그들 앞에서 니파이인들을 몰아 내며 많이 도륙하였느니라. And it came to pass that they marched to the borders of the land Bountiful, driving the Nephites before them and slaying many.
앨 51:29 그러나 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 티앤쿰에게 만난 바 되니, 저는 모리앤톤이 도망할 때 그를 죽이고 그의 백성을 가로막았던 자더라. But it came to pass that they were met by Teancum, who had slain Morianton and had headed his people in his flight.
앨 51:30 또 이렇게 되었나니 저가 아맬리카이아도 가로막았으니, 때에 그가 풍요 땅과 또한 북방 땅을 점령하고자 그의 수많은 군대와 더불어 진군하고 있었더라. And it came to pass that he headed Amalickiah also, as he was marching forth with his numerous army that he might take possession of the land Bountiful, and also the land northward.
앨 51:31 그러나 보라 그가 티앤쿰과 그의 병사들에게 격퇴 당함으로 실망하게 되었으니, 이는 티앤쿰의 각 병사들은 출중한 전사들이었음이요, 그들은 그 힘과 그 전쟁의 기술이 레이맨인들보다 뛰어나므로, 그들이 레이맨인들에 대하여 우세를 점하였음이더라. But behold he met with a disappointment by being repulsed by Teancum and his men, for they were great warriors; for every man of Teancum did exceed the Lamanites in their strength and in their skill of war, insomuch that they did gain advantage over the Lamanites.
앨 51:32 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 레이맨인들을 계속 쳐서, 날이 어둡기까지 저들을 도륙하였더라. 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 티앤쿰과 그의 병사들은 풍요 땅의 경계에 그들의 장막을 쳤고, 아맬리카이아는 변경 바닷가 해안에 저의 장막을 쳤으니 이처럼 저들이 쫓기었더라. And it came to pass that they did harass them, insomuch that they did slay them even until it was dark. And it came to pass that Teancum and his men did pitch their tents in the borders of the land Bountiful; and Amalickiah did pitch his tents in the borders on the beach by the seashore, and after this manner were they driven.
앨 51:33 또 이렇게 되었나니 밤이 되매, 티앤쿰과 그의 종이 몰래 빠져나가 밤중에 나가서 아맬리카이아의 진중으로 들어가니, 보라, 그들은 낮 동안의 수고와 더위로 인해 몹시 피로한 까닭에 깊이 잠들었더라. And it came to pass that when the night had come, Teancum and his servant stole forth and went out by night, and went into the camp of Amalickiah; and behold, sleep had overpowered them because of their much fatigue, which was caused by the labors and heat of the day.
앨 51:34 이에 이렇게 되었나니 티앤쿰이 왕의 장막에 몰래 숨어 들어가 저의 심장에 창을 꽂으매, 그가 왕으로 즉사하게 하였으므로 저가 그 종들을 깨우지 못하였더라. And it came to pass that Teancum stole privily into the tent of the king, and put a javelin to his heart; and he did cause the death of the king immediately that he did not awake his servants.
앨 51:35 이에 그가 다시 몰래 자기의 장막으로 돌아오니, 보라, 그의 병사들도 자고 있는지라, 그들을 깨워서 자기의 행한 일을 그들에게 다 고하였더라. And he returned again privily to his own camp, and behold, his men were asleep, and he awoke them and told them all the things that he had done.
앨 51:36 또 레이맨인들이 깨어 그들을 공격할까 하여, 자기의 군대로 하여금 만반의 준비를 갖추고 있게 하였느니라. And he caused that his armies should stand in readiness, lest the Lamanites had awakened and should come upon them.
앨 51:37 이에 이같이 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제이십오년이 끝났고, 이에 이같이 아맬리카이아의 생애가 끝나니라. And thus endeth the twenty and fifth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi; and thus endeth the days of Amalickiah.
