소개 앨마와 앰율레크가 옥에 갇혀 맞음 - 믿는 자들과 그들의 거룩한 경전이 불에 살라짐 - 이들 순교자들은 영광 중에 주의 영접을 받음 - 감옥 벽이 갈라져 무너짐 - 앨마와 앰율레크가 구출되고, 그들의 박해자들이 죽임을 당함. 주전 82~81년경. Alma and Amulek are imprisoned and smitten—The believers and their holy scriptures are burned by fire—These martyrs are received by the Lord in glory—The prison walls are rent and fall—Alma and Amulek are delivered and their persecutors are slain. 앨 14:1 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그가 백성에게 말하기를 마친 후 그들 중 많은 자들이 그의 말을 믿고, 회개하며, 경전을 상고하기 시작하였더라. AND it came to pass after he had made an end of speaking unto the people many of them did believe on his words, and began to repent, and to search the scriptures.
앨 14:2 그러나 그들 중 대부분은 앨마와 앰율레크를 멸하기를 원하였으니, 이는 지에즈롬에게 한 앨마의 말의 명백함으로 인하여 그들이 앨마에게 노하였음이라. 또 그들은 말하기를 앰율레크가 그들에게 거짓말 하였으며, 그들의 법과 또한 그들의 율법사들과 판사들에게 대하여 욕하였다 하더라. But the more part of them were desirous that they might destroy Alma and Amulek; for they were angry with Alma, because of the plainness of his words unto Zeezrom; and they also said that Amulek had lied unto them, and had reviled against their law and also against their lawyers and judges.
앨 14:3 그리고 그들은 또한 앨마와 앰율레크에게 노하였나니, 그들의 간악함에 대하여 이들이 그처럼 명백히 증거하였음으로 인하여, 그들은 앨마와 앰율레크를 은밀히 처치하려 하였더라. And they were also angry with Alma and Amulek; and because they had testified so plainly against their wickedness, they sought to put them away privily.
앨 14:4 그러나 이렇게 되었나니, 그들이 그리하지 아니하고, 앨마와 앰율레크를 잡아 단단한 줄로 결박하여 그 땅의 대판사 앞으로 끌어가니라. But it came to pass that they did not; but they took them and bound them with strong cords, and took them before the chief judge of the land.
앨 14:5 이에 백성들이 나아가 이들에 대하여 증거하되 - 이들이 그 땅과 또한 그 땅에 있는 모든 백성의 법과 그들의 율법사들과 판사들에게 대하여 욕하였으며, 또한 증거하기를 하나님은 한 분 밖에 없으되, 그가 그의 아들을 백성 중에 보내실 것이나, 그들을 구원하지 아니하시리라 하였다 증거하고, 또 앨마와 앰율레크에 대하여 백성이 그러한 것을 많이 증거하였으니, 이제 이 일은 모두 그 땅의 대판사 앞에서 행하여졌더라. And the people went forth and witnessed against them—testifying that they had reviled against the law, and their lawyers and judges of the land, and also of all the people that were in the land; and also testified that there was but one God, and that he should send his Son among the people, but he should not save them; and many such things did the people testify against Alma and Amulek. Now this was done before the chief judge of the land.
앨 14:6 이에 이렇게 되었나니 지에즈롬이 백성들이 한 말에 놀랐고, 또한 자기의 거짓된 말로써 자신이 백성들 가운데 초래한 바, 생각의 눈멈에 관하여 알게 되어, 그 영혼이 스스로 죄를 깨닫는 마음으로 괴로움을 당하기 시작하였나니, 참으로 그가 지옥의 고통에 에워싸이기 시작하였더라. And it came to pass that Zeezrom was astonished at the words which had been spoken; and he also knew concerning the blindness of the minds, which he had caused among the people by his lying words; and his soul began to be harrowed up under a consciousness of his own guilt; yea, he began to be encircled about by the pains of hell.
앨 14:7 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그가 백성들에게 부르짖기 시작하여 이르되, 보라, 나에게 죄가 있고, 이 사람들은 하나님 앞에 결백하도다 하고, 그때로부터 앨마와 앰율레크를 위하여 변호하기 시작하였으나, 그들이 그를 욕하여 이르되, 너도 귀신 들렸느냐 하고, 그에게 침을 뱉고, 그를 그들 가운데서 내어 쫓고, 앨마와 앰율레크의 말을 믿는 자들도 모두 내어 쫓았더라. 또 그들이 저들을 내어 쫓고, 사람들을 보내어 저들에게 돌을 던지게 하였더라. And it came to pass that he began to cry unto the people, saying: Behold, I am guilty, and these men are spotless before God. And he began to plead for them from that time forth; but they reviled him, saying: Art thou also possessed with the devil? And they spit upon him, and cast him out from among them, and also all those who believed in the words which had been spoken by Alma and Amulek; and they cast them out, and sent men to cast stones at them.
앨 14:8 또 그들은 저들의 아내들과 자녀들을 한데 모아, 하나님의 말씀을 믿거나 믿도록 가르침을 받은 자는 누구든지 불에 던져지게 하고, 그들은 또 거룩한 경전이 포함된 저들의 기록을 가져와, 이도 역시 불에 던져, 그것들이 불에 타 진멸되게 하였더라. And they brought their wives and children together, and whosoever believed or had been taught to believe in the word of God they caused that they should be cast into the fire; and they also brought forth their records which contained the holy scriptures, and cast them into the fire also, that they might be burned and destroyed by fire.
앨 14:9 또 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 앨마와 앰율레크를 취하여, 순교의 장소로 끌어내어, 불에 타는 이들의 멸망을 목격하게 하였더라. And it came to pass that they took Alma and Amulek, and carried them forth to the place of martyrdom, that they might witness the destruction of those who were consumed by fire.
앨 14:10 이에 앰율레크가 불 가운데서 타고 있는 여자들과 어린아이들의 고통을 보고, 그도 또한 고통을 받아, 앨마에게 이르되, 우리가 어찌 이 참혹한 광경을 목격할 수 있으리이까? 그런즉 우리의 손을 뻗어, 우리 안에 있는 하나님의 권능을 행사하여, 화염에서 저들을 구원하사이다 하였더라. And when Amulek saw the pains of the women and children who were consuming in the fire, he also was pained; and he said unto Alma: How can we witness this awful scene? Therefore let us stretch forth our hands, and exercise the power of God which is in us, and save them from the flames.
앨 14:11 그러나 앨마가 그에게 이르되, 영이 나를 억제하사 내가 손을 뻗치면 안 된다 하시나니, 이는 보라 주께서 저들을 영광 중에 자기에게로 영접하심이라. 또 주께서 그들로 이 일을 행하도록 버려 두시는 것, 곧 백성들로 그 마음의 완악함을 좇아, 저들에게 이 일을 행하도록 버려 두시는 것은, 그가 그 진노 중에 그들에게 베푸실 심판이 의로운 것이 되게 하시려는 것이니, 마지막 날에 무죄한 자들의 피가 그들을 치는 증거가 될 것이요, 또 그들에게 대하여 힘차게 외치리라. But Alma said unto him: The Spirit constraineth me that I must not stretch forth mine hand; for behold the Lord receiveth them up unto himself, in glory; and he doth suffer that they may do this thing, or that the people may do this thing unto them, according to the hardness of their hearts, that the judgments which he shall exercise upon them in his wrath may be just; and the blood of the innocent shall stand as a witness against them, yea, and cry mightily against them at the last day.
앨 14:12 이제 앰율레크가 앨마에게 이르되, 보소서, 아마도 그들이 우리도 사르리이다 하더라. Now Amulek said unto Alma: Behold, perhaps they will burn us also.
앨 14:13 이에 앨마가 이르되, 주의 뜻대로 될지니라. 그러나 보라, 우리의 일이 끝나지 아니하였느니라. 그러므로 그들이 우리를 사르지 아니하느니라 하니라. And Alma said: Be it according to the will of the Lord. But, behold, our work is not finished; therefore they burn us not.
앨 14:14 이제 이렇게 되었나니 불에 던져진 이들의 몸과 또한 그들과 함께 던져진 기록들이 다 타고나서, 그 땅의 대판사가 와서 결박당해 있는 앨마와 앰율레크 앞에 서서, 그 손으로 저들의 뺨을 치고, 저들에게 이르되, 너희가 이런 일을 보고도, 또다시 이 백성에게 전파하기를 그들이 불과 유황의 못에 던져지리라고 하겠느냐? Now it came to pass that when the bodies of those who had been cast into the fire were consumed, and also the records which were cast in with them, the chief judge of the land came and stood before Alma and Amulek, as they were bound; and he smote them with his hand upon their cheeks, and said unto them: After what ye have seen, will ye preach again unto this people, that they shall be cast into a lake of fire and brimstone?
앨 14:15 보라, 너희가 보나니 불에 던져진 자들을 구원할 능력이 너희에게 없었고, 하나님도 그들이 너의 신앙에 속하였음으로 인하여 그들을 구원하지 아니하였느니라 하고, 판사가 다시 저들의 뺨을 치고 묻되, 너희는 너희를 위해 무엇이라 말하느냐? Behold, ye see that ye had not power to save those who had been cast into the fire; neither has God saved them because they were of thy faith. And the judge smote them again upon their cheeks, and asked: What say ye for yourselves?
앨 14:16 이제 이 판사는 기드온을 죽인 니허의 반차와 신앙을 따른 자더라. Now this judge was after the order and faith of Nehor, who slew Gideon.
앨 14:17 이에 이렇게 되었나니 앨마와 앰율레크가 그에게 아무것도 대답하지 아니하매, 그가 다시 저들을 때린 후, 관원에게 넘겨 옥에 던져 넣게 하니라. And it came to pass that Alma and Amulek answered him nothing; and he smote them again, and delivered them to the officers to be cast into prison
앨 14:18 이에 저들이 옥에 던져진 지 사흘 되었을 때, 니허의 신앙에 속한 많은 율법사들과 판사들과 제사들과 교사들이 왔으니, 그들이 저들을 보러 옥 있는 데까지 들어와, 여러 말씀에 대하여 저들에게 질문하였으나 저들이 아무 대답도 하지 아니하더라. And when they had been cast into prison three days, there came many lawyers, and judges, and priests, and teachers, who were of the profession of Nehor; and they came in unto the prison to see them, and they questioned them about many words; but they answered them nothing.
앨 14:19 이에 이렇게 되었나니 판사가 저들 앞에 서서 이르되 어찌하여, 이 사람들의 말에 대답하지 아니하느냐? 너희를 화염에 넘길 권능이 내게 있는 줄 너희가 알지 못하느냐 하고 저들에게 말하기를 명하였으나, 저들이 아무 대답도 하지 아니하니라. And it came to pass that the judge stood before them, and said: Why do ye not answer the words of this people? Know ye not that I have power to deliver you up unto the flames? And he commanded them to speak; but they answered nothing.
앨 14:20 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 떠나 자기 길을 갔다가, 다음 날 다시 왔고, 판사가 또한 다시 저들의 뺨을 치더라. 또한 많은 자들이 나아와, 저들을 치며 이르되, 너희가 다시 서서 이 백성을 판단하며 우리의 법을 정죄하겠느냐? 너희가 그토록 큰 능력을 가졌으면 어찌하여 너희 스스로를 구하지 아니하느냐? And it came to pass that they departed and went their ways, but came again on the morrow; and the judge also smote them again on their cheeks. And many came forth also, and smote them, saying: Will ye stand again and judge this people, and condemn our law? If ye have such great power why do ye not deliver yourselves?
앨 14:21 또 그 같은 말을 저들에게 많이 하며, 저들을 향해 그들의 이를 갈고, 저들에게 침을 뱉으며, 또 말하기를, 우리가 저주를 받으면 어떻게 보이겠느냐? And many such things did they say unto them, gnashing their teeth upon them, and spitting upon them, and saying: How shall we look when we are damned?
앨 14:22 또 그 같은 많은 말을, 참으로 그 같은 온갖 말을 저들에게 하였나니, 이같이 여러 날 동안 저들을 조롱하였더라. 또 음식을 주지 않아 주리게 하였고, 물을 주지 않아 목마르게 하였으며, 또한 저들의 옷을 빼앗으매 저들이 벌거벗었나니, 이같이 저들이 단단한 줄로 결박되어, 감옥에 갇혀 있었더라. And many such things, yea, all manner of such things did they say unto them; and thus they did mock them for many days. And they did withhold food from them that they might hunger, and water that they might thirst; and they also did take from them their clothes that they were naked; and thus they were bound with strong cords, and confined in prison.
앨 14:23 이에 저들이 여러 날 동안 이같이 고난을 당한 후 이렇게 되었나니, (그 날은 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제십년 시월 십이일이었더라) 앰몬아이하 땅의 대판사와 그들의 교사와 그들의 율법사들의 다수가 앨마와 앰율레크가 줄로 결박되어 있는 옥까지 들어가더니, And it came to pass after they had thus suffered for many days, (and it was on the twelfth day, in the tenth month, in the tenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi) that the chief judge over the land of Ammonihah and many of their teachers and their lawyers went in unto the prison where Alma and Amulek were bound with cords.
앨 14:24 이에 대판사가 저들 앞에 서서, 다시 저들을 때리고, 저들에게 이르되, 너희에게 하나님의 권능이 있거든 이 줄에서 너희 스스로를 구원하라, 그리하면 너희의 말대로 주께서 이 백성을 멸하시리라는 것을 우리가 믿으리라 하더라. And the chief judge stood before them, and smote them again, and said unto them: If ye have the power of God deliver yourselves from these bands, and then we will believe that the Lord will destroy this people according to your words.
앨 14:25 또 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 다 나아가 저들을 치되, 동일한 말을 하며, 마지막 사람까지 그리하니, 맨 마지막 사람이 저들에게 말하고 나자, 하나님의 권능이 앨마와 앰율레크 위에 있으매, 이들이 일어나 자기 발로 서더라. And it came to pass that they all went forth and smote them, saying the same words, even until the last; and when the last had spoken unto them the power of God was upon Alma and Amulek, and they rose and stood upon their feet.
앨 14:26 그리고 앨마가 외쳐 이르되, 주여, 이 큰 고난을 우리가 어느 때까지 받아야 하오리이까? 주여, 그리스도 안에 있는 우리의 신앙을 좇아 우리에게 힘을 주사, 구원을 얻게 하시옵소서 하고, 저들을 결박한 줄을 끊으매, 무리가 이를 보고 도망하기 시작하였으니, 이는 멸망의 두려움이 그들에게 임하였음이라. And Alma cried, saying: How long shall we suffer these great afflictions, O Lord? O Lord, give us strength according to our faith which is in Christ, even unto deliverance. And they broke the cords with which they were bound; and when the people saw this, they began to flee, for the fear of destruction had come upon them.
앨 14:27 또 이렇게 되었나니 그들의 두려움이 어찌나 컸던지 그들이 땅에 엎드러져, 감옥의 바깥문에 이르지 못하더니, 땅이 심히 흔들리고, 감옥의 벽이 둘로 갈라져, 땅에 무너지매, 앨마와 앰율레크를 친 대판사와 율법사들과 제사들과 교사들이 그 무너짐에 의해 죽임을 당하니라. And it came to pass that so great was their fear that they fell to the earth, and did not obtain the outer door of the prison; and the earth shook mightily, and the walls of the prison were rent in twain, so that they fell to the earth; and the chief judge, and the lawyers, and priests, and teachers, who smote upon Alma and Amulek, were slain by the fall thereof.
앨 14:28 또 앨마와 앰율레크는 옥에서 나왔으나, 상하지 아니하였으니, 이는 주께서 그리스도 안에 있는 저들의 신앙을 좇아 저들에게 능력을 주셨음이라. 이에 저들이 옥에서 곧바로 나아왔고, 저들을 결박했던 줄에서 풀렸으되, 옥은 무너져, 앨마와 앰율레크를 제외하고는, 그 안에 있던 자들이 모두 죽임을 당하였고, 저들은 곧바로 성 안으로 나아왔더라. And Alma and Amulek came forth out of the prison, and they were not hurt; for the Lord had granted unto them power, according to their faith which was in Christ. And they straightway came forth out of the prison; and they were loosed from their bands; and the prison had fallen to the earth, and every soul within the walls thereof, save it were Alma and Amulek, was slain; and they straightway came forth into the city.
앨 14:29 이제 백성이 큰 소음을 듣고 그 원인을 알고자 하여 무리를 지어 함께 달려왔다가, 앨마와 앰율레크가 옥에서 나아오는 것과 감옥의 벽이 땅에 무너진 것을 보고는 큰 두려움에 사로잡혀, 앨마와 앰율레크의 면전에서 도망하기를 참으로 염소가 그 어린 것을 데리고 두 마리의 사자에게서 도망함같이 하였나니, 이같이 그들이 앨마와 앰율레크의 면전에서 도망하였더라. Now the people having heard a great noise came running together by multitudes to know the cause of it; and when they saw Alma and Amulek coming forth out of the prison, and the walls thereof had fallen to the earth, they were struck with great fear, and fled from the presence of Alma and Amulek even as a goat fleeth with her young from two lions; and thus they did flee from the presence of Alma and Amulek.
