앨 24:1 또 이렇게 되었나니 아맬레카이인들과 앰율론인들 및 레이맨인들 중 앰율론 땅에와, 또한 힐램 땅에 있는 자들, 그리고 예루살렘 땅에와, 요컨대 주변 모든 땅에 있는 자로서, 돌이키지 아니하고, 앤타이-니파이-리하이의 이름을 취하지 않았던 레이맨인들이, 아맬레카이인들과 앰율론인들에게 선동되어 그들의 형제들에게 대하여 노하게 되었더라. AND it came to pass that the Amalekites and the Amulonites and the Lamanites who were in the land of Amulon, and also in the land of Helam, and who were in the land of Jerusalem, and in fine, in all the land round about, who had not been converted and had not taken upon them the name of Anti-Nephi-Lehi, were stirred up by the Amalekites and by the Amulonites to anger against their brethren.
앨 24:2 또 그들의 증오심이 저들에게 대하여 심히 강렬해져서, 이윽고 그들이 자기들의 왕을 거스려 모반하기 시작하더니, 마침내 그가 자기들의 왕 됨을 원하지 않게 되었으므로, 그들이 앤타이-니파이-리하이 백성을 대적하여 무기를 드니라. And their hatred became exceedingly sore against them, even insomuch that they began to rebel against their king, insomuch that they would not that he should be their king; therefore, they took up arms against the people of Anti-Nephi-Lehi.
앨 24:3 이제 왕은 그 아들에게 나라를 넘겨주고, 그의 이름을 앤타이-니파이-리하이라 하였더라. Now the king conferred the kingdom upon his son, and he called his name Anti-Nephi-Lehi.
앨 24:4 그리고 왕은 레이맨인들이 하나님의 백성을 대적하여 전쟁을 위한 준비를 하기 시작한 바로 그 해에 죽었더라. And the king died in that selfsame year that the Lamanites began to make preparations for war against the people of God.
앨 24:5 이제 암몬과 그의 형제들 및 그와 함께 올라 온 모든 자들이 그들의 형제들을 멸하려 하는 레이맨인들의 준비를 보고, 미디안 땅으로 나아왔더니, 거기서 암몬이 그의 모든 형제를 만나고, 그 곳으로부터 그들이 이스마엘 땅으로 왔으니, 이는 그들이 레이맨인들에 대하여 스스로를 방어하기 위하여 무엇을 해야 할지, 라모나이와 또한 그의 형제 앤타이-니파이-리하이와 더불어 회의를 갖고자 함이었더라. Now when Ammon and his brethren and all those who had come up with him saw the preparations of the Lamanites to destroy their brethren, they came forth to the land of Midian, and there Ammon met all his brethren; and from thence they came to the land of Ishmael that they might hold a council with Lamoni and also with his brother Anti-Nephi-Lehi, what they should do to defend themselves against the Lamanites.
앨 24:6 이제 돌이켜 주께로 돌아온 모든 백성 가운데 그들의 형제를 대적하여 무기를 들려하는 자는 한 명도 없었나니, 참으로 그들은 전쟁을 위한 여하한 준비조차 하려 하지 않았으며, 또한 그들의 왕도 그들에게 하지 말도록 명하였더라. Now there was not one soul among all the people who had been converted unto the Lord that would take up arms against their brethren; nay, they would not even make any preparations for war; yea, and also their king commanded them that they should not.
앨 24:7 이제 이는 그가 이 문제에 관하여 백성들에게 한 말이니라. 내 사랑하는 백성들이여, 우리의 크신 하나님이 선하심 중에 우리의 이 형제, 니파이인들을 우리에게 보내사 우리에게 전도하게 하시고, 간악한 우리 조상들의 전통에 대하여 우리로 깨닫게 하셨음을, 내가 내 하나님께 감사하노라. Now, these are the words which he said unto the people concerning the matter: I thank my God, my beloved people, that our great God has in goodness sent these our brethren, the Nephites, unto us to preach unto us, and to convince us of the traditions of our wicked fathers.
앨 24:8 또 보라, 그가 그의 영의 일부분을 우리에게 주사 우리의 마음을 부드럽게 하시매, 우리가 이 형제들 곧 니파이인들과 교제를 하게 되었음을 내가 나의 크신 하나님께 감사하노라. And behold, I thank my great God that he has given us a portion of his Spirit to soften our hearts, that we have opened a correspondence with these brethren, the Nephites.
앨 24:9 또 보라 이 교제를 시작함으로써 우리가 우리의 죄와, 우리가 범한 많은 살인을 깨닫게 되었음을 내가 또한 나의 하나님께 감사하노라. And behold, I also thank my God, that by opening this correspondence we have been convinced of our sins, and of the many murders which we have committed.
앨 24:10 또 우리로 하여금 이러한 일들을 회개하게 하여 주셨음과, 또한 우리가 범한 많은 죄와 살인을 용서해 주시고 그의 아들의 공덕을 통하여 우리 마음에서 죄업을 제하여 주셨음을, 내가 내 하나님, 참으로 나의 크신 하나님께 또한 감사하노라. And I also thank my God, yea, my great God, that he hath granted unto us that we might repent of these things, and also that he hath forgiven us of those our many sins and murders which we have committed, and taken away the guilt from our hearts, through the merits of his Son.
앨 24:11 이제 보라, 나의 형제들아, 우리가 할 수 있었던 일이 (우리가 모든 인류 가운데 가장 잃은 바 된 자들이었으므로) 우리의 모든 죄와 우리가 범한 많은 살인을 회개하고, 하나님으로 하여금 그것들을 우리 마음에서 제하시게 하는 것이 전부였은즉, 또 이는 우리가 할 수 있었던 일이 하나님 앞에 충분히 회개하여 그로 우리의 오점을 제하시게 하는 것이 전부였음인즉 - And now behold, my brethren, since it has been all that we could do, (as we were the most lost of all mankind) to repent of all our sins and the many murders which we have committed, and to get God to take them away from our hearts, for it was all we could do to repent sufficiently before God that he would take away our stain—
앨 24:12 이제 나의 가장 사랑하는 형제들아, 하나님이 우리의 오점을 제하셨고 우리의 검이 빛나게 되었은즉, 우리가 다시는 우리 형제들의 피로 우리의 검을 더럽히지 말자. Now, my best beloved brethren, since God hath taken away our stains, and our swords have become bright, then let us stain our swords no more with the blood of our brethren.
앨 24:13 보라 내가 너희에게 이르노니, 그리하지 말자, 우리의 검을 간직하여 그것이 우리 형제들의 피로 더럽혀지지 않게 하자. 이는 혹시라도, 우리가 다시 우리의 검을 더럽힌다면, 우리 죄의 속죄를 위하여 흘리실 우리의 크신 하나님의 아들의 피를 통하여서도 이 검들이 다시는 씻기워 빛나게 될 수 없음이니라. Behold, I say unto you, Nay, let us retain our swords that they be not stained with the blood of our brethren; for perhaps, if we should stain our swords again they can no more be washed bright through the blood of the Son of our great God, which shall be shed for the atonement of our sins.
앨 24:14 또 크신 하나님이 우리를 긍휼히 여기사, 우리로 멸망하지 않게 하시려고 이러한 일들을 우리에게 알게 하셨고, 그뿐 아니라 그가 우리의 자손들을 사랑하시는 만큼 우리의 영혼을 사랑하시는 까닭에, 이러한 일들을 미리 우리에게 알게 하신 것이니, 그러므로 그는 구원의 계획을 장래 세대에게와 마찬가지로 우리에게도 알리시려고, 그의 자비하심 가운데 그의 천사들로 우리를 방문하시는도다. And the great God has had mercy on us, and made these things known unto us that we might not perish; yea, and he has made these things known unto us beforehand, because he loveth our souls as well as he loveth our children; therefore, in his mercy he doth visit us by his angels, that the plan of salvation might be made known unto us as well as unto future generations.
앨 24:15 오 우리 하나님이 얼마나 자비로우시냐! 또 이제 보라, 우리의 오점을 우리에게서 제하시게 하는 것이 우리가 할 수 있는 전부였고 우리의 검은 빛나게 되었은즉, 이를 감추어 버리고 빛나는 채로 간직되게 하여, 마지막 날에 곧 우리가 그의 앞에 서서 심판받게 될 날에, 그가 우리에게 말씀을 주시고 그로써 우리를 깨끗하게 하신 이후로, 우리가 우리 형제들의 피에 우리의 검을 더럽히지 않았다는 우리 하나님께 대한 증거로 삼자. Oh, how merciful is our God! And now behold, since it has been as much as we could do to get our stains taken away from us, and our swords are made bright, let us hide them away that they may be kept bright, as a testimony to our God at the last day, or at the day that we shall be brought to stand before him to be judged, that we have not stained our swords in the blood of our brethren since he imparted his word unto us and has made us clean thereby.
앨 24:16 또 이제 나의 형제들아, 우리의 형제들이 우리를 멸하려 할지라도, 보라, 우리는 우리의 검을 감추어 버리리니, 참으로 우리는 이를 땅속 깊이 묻고, 빛나는 채 간직되게 하여, 마지막 날에 우리가 이를 결코 사용하지 않았다는 증거가 되게 하리라, 또 만일 우리의 형제들이 우리를 멸하면, 보라, 우리는 우리 하나님께로 가서 구원받게 되리라. And now, my brethren, if our brethren seek to destroy us, behold, we will hide away our swords, yea, even we will bury them deep in the earth, that they may be kept bright, as a testimony that we have never used them, at the last day; and if our brethren destroy us, behold, we shall go to our God and shall be saved.
앨 24:17 이에 이제 이렇게 되었나니 왕이 이 말을 마치매, 모든 백성이 함께 모여서, 그들의 칼과 사람의 피를 흘리는 데 쓰이는 모든 무기를 취하고, 이를 땅 속 깊이 묻어버렸더라. And now it came to pass that when the king had made an end of these sayings, and all the people were assembled together, they took their swords, and all the weapons which were used for the shedding of man’s blood, and they did bury them up deep in the earth.
앨 24:18 이에 이렇게 그들이 한 것은, 그것이 그들 소견에 하나님께와, 또한 사람들에게, 그들이 결코 다시는 사람의 피를 흘리기 위하여 무기를 사용하지 않겠다는 증거가 되었음이요, 또 이렇게 하면서 그들은 그들의 형제들의 피를 흘리기보다는, 차라리 그들 스스로의 생명을 버리며, 형제에게서 빼앗기보다는 오히려 저들에게 주며, 게으름 가운데 그들의 날을 보내기보다는 오히려 그들 손으로 풍성히 일하겠다는 것을 보증하고, 하나님과 성약하였더라. And this they did, it being in their view a testimony to God, and also to men, that they never would use weapons again for the shedding of man’s blood; and this they did, vouching and covenanting with God, that rather than shed the blood of their brethren they would give up their own lives; and rather than take away from a brother they would give unto him; and rather than spend their days in idleness they would labor abundantly with their hands.
앨 24:19 또 이러므로 우리는 이 레이맨인들이 믿고 진리를 알게 되었을 때, 그들이 굳건하였고, 죄를 범하기보다는 차라리 죽기까지라도 고난을 받고자 하였음을 알며, 또 이러므로 우리는 그들이 평화를 위하여 그들의 화평의 무기를 묻었음을, 곧 그들의 전쟁 무기를 묻었음을 아느니라. And thus we see that, when these Lamanites were brought to believe and to know the truth, they were firm, and would suffer even unto death rather than commit sin; and thus we see that they buried their weapons of peace, or they buried the weapons of war, for peace.
앨 24:20 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 그들의 형제, 레이맨인들이 전쟁을 예비하고, 왕을 멸하고, 그의 대신에 다른 자를 두며, 또한 앤타이-니파이-리하이 백성을 그 땅에서 멸할 목적으로, 니파이 땅으로 올라오니라. And it came to pass that their brethren, the Lamanites, made preparations for war, and came up to the land of Nephi for the purpose of destroying the king, and to place another in his stead, and also of destroying the people of Anti-Nephi-Lehi out of the land.
앨 24:21 또 이제 저들이 치러 옴을 백성이 보고는 저들을 맞으러 나가서, 저들 앞에서 땅에 엎드려 주의 이름을 부르기 시작하였나니, 그리하여 레이맨인들이 그들을 공격하기 시작하여 칼로 그들을 죽이기 시작하였을 때, 그들은 이러한 태도로 있었더라. Now when the people saw that they were coming against them they went out to meet them, and prostrated themselves before them to the earth, and began to call on the name of the Lord; and thus they were in this attitude when the Lamanites began to fall upon them, and began to slay them with the sword.
앨 24:22 또 그리하여 아무런 저항도 받음이 없이, 레이맨인들이 그들 중 천 다섯을 죽였나니, 우리가 알거니와 그들은 복되도다, 이는 그들이 가서 그들의 하나님과 함께 거할 것임이러라. And thus without meeting any resistance, they did slay a thousand and five of them; and we know that they are blessed, for they have gone to dwell with their God.
앨 24:23 이제 레이맨인들은 그 형제들이 칼에서 도망하거나, 오른편으로나 왼편으로 돌이키려 하지 아니하고, 누워서 죽으려 하며, 칼 아래 죽어가는 바로 그 도중에도 하나님을 찬송함을 보고 - Now when the Lamanites saw that their brethren would not flee from the sword, neither would they turn aside to the right hand or to the left, but that they would lie down and perish, and praised God even in the very act of perishing under the sword—
앨 24:24 이제 레이맨인들이 이를 보고는 그들을 죽이기를 그만두었고, 그 형제 중 칼 아래 쓰러진 자들로 인하여 그 마음이 속에서 복받친 자가 많았으니, 이는 저들이 그 행한 일을 뉘우쳤음이라. Now when the Lamanites saw this they did forbear from slaying them; and there were many whose hearts had swollen in them for those of their brethren who had fallen under the sword, for they repented of the things which they had done.
앨 24:25 이에 이렇게 되었나니 저들이 자기의 전쟁 무기를 던져 놓고, 이를 다시 잡으려 하지 않았으니, 이는 그 범한 살인으로 인하여 찔림을 받았음이라. 이에 저들은 그들을 죽이려고 팔을 치켜든 자들의 자비에 맡기고, 저들의 형제들같이 엎드렸더라. And it came to pass that they threw down their weapons of war, and they would not take them again, for they were stung for the murders which they had committed; and they came down even as their brethren, relying upon the mercies of those whose arms were lifted to slay them.
앨 24:26 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그 날 죽임을 당한 수보다 더 많은 자들이 하나님의 백성과 합하였으며, 죽임을 당한 자들은 의로운 백성이었으므로, 우리는 그들이 구원되었음을 의심할 아무 이유가 없느니라. And it came to pass that the people of God were joined that day by more than the number who had been slain; and those who had been slain were righteous people, therefore we have no reason to doubt but what they were saved.
앨 24:27 또 그들 중 악한 자로서 죽임을 당한 사람이 하나도 없고, 오히려 진리의 지식에 이르게 된 자가 천 명이 넘었으니, 이러므로 주께서 자기 백성의 구원이 되도록 여러 방법으로 역사하심을 우리가 아노라. And there was not a wicked man slain among them; but there were more than a thousand brought to the knowledge of the truth; thus we see that the Lord worketh in many ways to the salvation of his people.
앨 24:28 이제 자기 형제를 그처럼 많이 죽인 레이맨인의 대부분은 아맬레카이인과 앰율론인이니, 이들 중 대부분은 니허인들의 반차를 따른 자들이었더라. Now the greatest number of those of the Lamanites who slew so many of their brethren were Amalekites and Amulonites, the greatest number of whom were after the order of the Nehors.
앨 24:29 이제 주의 백성과 합한 자들 중에는 아맬레카이인이나 앰율론인이나, 니허의 반차를 따른 자는 하나도 없었나니, 그들은 레이맨과 레뮤엘의 실제 후손들이더라. Now, among those who joined the people of the Lord, there were none who were Amalekites or Amulonites, or who were of the order of Nehor, but they were actual descendants of Laman and Lemuel.
앨 24:30 또 이러므로 우리는 명백히 분별할 수 있나니, 백성이 한때 하나님의 영의 비췸을 받아, 의에 관한 것에 대하여 큰 지식을 얻고, 그러고나서 떨어져 나가 죄와 범법에 빠진 후에는, 그들이 더욱 완악하게 되고, 그리하여 그들의 상태가 이러한 것들을 결코 알지 못했던 것보다 더욱 나빠지느니라. And thus we can plainly discern, that after a people have been once enlightened by the Spirit of God, and have had great knowledge of things pertaining to righteousness, and then have fallen away into sin and transgression, they become more hardened, and thus their state becomes worse than though they had never known these things.
