앨 44:1 이에 이렇게 되었나니 저희가 멈추고 그들에게서 한 걸음 물러서매, 모로나이가 제래헴나에게 이르기를, 보라, 제래헴나여, 우리는 피 흘리는 자가 되기를 원하지 아니하노라. 너희가 우리 수중에 있음을 너희가 알고 있거니와, 그럼에도 우리는 너희를 죽이기를 원하지 아니하노라. AND it came to pass that they did stop and withdrew a pace from them. And Moroni said unto Zerahemnah: Behold, Zerahemnah, that we do not desire to be men of blood. Ye know that ye are in our hands, yet we do not desire to slay you.
앨 44:2 보라, 우리는 권력을 위하여 너희의 피를 흘리고자 너희를 대적하여 싸우러 오지 아니하였고, 아무에게라도 속박의 멍에를 씌우기를 원하지도 아니하노라. 그러나 너희는 바로 이러한 목적을 위하여 우리를 치러 왔고, 또한 너희는 우리의 종교로 인하여 우리에게 노하였도다. Behold, we have not come out to battle against you that we might shed your blood for power; neither do we desire to bring any one to the yoke of bondage. But this is the very cause for which ye have come against us; yea, and ye are angry with us because of our religion.
앨 44:3 그러나 이제 주께서 우리와 함께 계심을 너희가 보며, 그가 너희를 우리 손에 붙이신 것을 너희가 보나니, 이제 나는 이 일이 우리에게 이루어진 것이 우리의 종교와 그리스도를 믿는 우리의 신앙으로 말미암음인 줄을 너희가 깨닫기 바라노라. 또 이제 너희는 우리의 이 신앙을 너희가 무너뜨릴 수 없다는 것을 아느니라. But now, ye behold that the Lord is with us; and ye behold that he has delivered you into our hands. And now I would that ye should understand that this is done unto us because of our religion and our faith in Christ. And now ye see that ye cannot destroy this our faith.
앨 44:4 이제 너희는 이것이 참된 하나님의 신앙인 것을 아느니라. 참으로 너희는 우리가 하나님께, 또 우리의 신앙과 우리의 종교에 충실한 한, 하나님이 우리를 도우시고 지키시며 보호하시리라는 것을 아나니, 우리가 범법에 빠져 우리의 신앙을 부인하지 않는 한, 주께서는 결코 우리가 멸망당하도록 버려 두지 아니하시리라. Now ye see that this is the true faith of God; yea, ye see that God will support, and keep, and preserve us, so long as we are faithful unto him, and unto our faith, and our religion; and never will the Lord suffer that we shall be destroyed except we should fall into transgression and deny our faith.
앨 44:5 또 이제 제래헴나여, 내가 우리의 팔을 강하게 하사 우리로 너희를 이길 힘을 갖게 하신 저 전능하신 하나님의 이름으로, 우리의 신앙을 두고, 우리의 종교를 두고, 또 우리의 예배 의식을 두고, 또 우리의 교회를 두고, 또 우리가 우리의 아내와 자녀에 대한 성스러운 부양의 의무를 두고, 우리를 우리의 땅과 우리의 나라에 묶어 두는 저 자유를 두고, 이뿐 아니라 또한 우리의 모든 행복을 가능하게 해 주는 하나님의 거룩한 말씀의 보전을 두고, 그리고 우리에게 지극히 소중한 모든 것을 두고 네게 명하노니 - And now, Zerahemnah, I command you, in the name of that all-powerful God, who has strengthened our arms that we have gained power over you, by our faith, by our religion, and by our rites of worship, and by our church, and by the sacred support which we owe to our wives and our children, by that liberty which binds us to our lands and our country; yea, and also by the maintenance of the sacred word of God, to which we owe all our happiness; and by all that is most dear unto us—
앨 44:6 참으로 또한 이것이 모두가 아니라. 너희가 생명에 대해 갖고 있는 모든 소망을 두고 네게 명하노니, 너희는 너희의 전쟁 무기를 우리에게 넘기라. 그리하면 우리가 너희의 피를 찾지 아니하리니, 만일 너희가 너희의 길을 가서 다시 우리를 치러 오지 아니할 것이면, 너희의 목숨을 살려 주리라. Yea, and this is not all; I command you by all the desires which ye have for life, that ye deliver up your weapons of war unto us, and we will seek not your blood, but we will spare your lives, if ye will go your way and come not again to war against us.
앨 44:7 그러나 이제 만일 너희가 이렇게 하지 아니하면, 보라, 너희는 우리 수중에 있은즉, 내가 나의 병사들을 명하여 그들로 너희를 급습하여, 너희 몸에 사망의 상처를 입히게 하리니, 너희가 멸절되리라. 그런 다음 누가 이 백성을 다스릴 권력을 갖게 되는지 우리가 볼 것이니, 참으로 누가 속박에 들게 되는지 우리가 볼 것이니라 하였더라. And now, if ye do not this, behold, ye are in our hands, and I will command my men that they shall fall upon you, and inflict the wounds of death in your bodies, that ye may become extinct; and then we will see who shall have power over this people; yea, we will see who shall be brought into bondage.
앨 44:8 이에 이제 이렇게 되었나니 이 말을 듣고 제래헴나가 나아와 자기의 칼과 자기의 신월도와, 자기의 활을 모로나이의 손에 넘기며 그에게 이르되, 보라, 여기 우리의 전쟁 무기가 있느니라. 우리가 이를 너희에게 넘기려니와, 우리와 또한 우리의 자손들이 깨뜨릴 줄을 알고 있는 맹세를 너희에게 하는 것은 우리가 스스로 용납하지 아니하리라. 오직 우리의 전쟁 무기를 취하고, 우리의 광야로 떠남을 용납하라. 그렇지 아니하면 우리는 우리의 칼을 그대로 지니리니, 우리가 망하든지 아니면 정복하든지 하겠노라. And now it came to pass that when Zerahemnah had heard these sayings he came forth and delivered up his sword and his cimeter, and his bow into the hands of Moroni, and said unto him: Behold, here are our weapons of war; we will deliver them up unto you, but we will not suffer ourselves to take an oath unto you, which we know that we shall break, and also our children; but take our weapons of war, and suffer that we may depart into the wilderness; otherwise we will retain our swords, and we will perish or conquer.
앨 44:9 보라, 우리는 너희의 신앙에 속하지 아니하였노니, 우리는 우리를 너희 손에 붙인 것이 하나님이라고 믿지 아니하노라. 다만 우리는, 너희를 우리의 칼로부터 보호한 것은 너희의 교활함이라 믿노니, 보라, 너희를 보존한 것은 너희의 가슴판과 너희의 방패니라. Behold, we are not of your faith; we do not believe that it is God that has delivered us into your hands; but we believe that it is your cunning that has preserved you from our swords. Behold, it is your breastplates and your shields that have preserved you.
앨 44:10 이에 이제 제래헴나가 말하기를 마치매, 모로나이가 그 받았던 칼과 전쟁 무기를 제래헴나에게 돌려 주며 이르되, 보라, 우리는 싸움을 끝내리라. And now when Zerahemnah had made an end of speaking these words, Moroni returned the sword and the weapons of war, which he had received, unto Zerahemnah, saying: Behold, we will end the conflict.
앨 44:11 보라, 나는 너희에게 한 말을 취소할 수 없나니, 그러므로 주께서 살아 계심같이, 너희가 우리를 대적하여 싸우러 다시 돌아오지 않겠다는 맹세를 하고 떠나지 않는 한, 너희가 떠나지 못하리라. 이제 너희가 우리 수중에 있은즉, 우리가 너희 피를 땅 위에 흘릴 것이라, 그렇지 않으면 내가 제시한 조건에 너희가 따를지니라 하였더라. Now I cannot recall the words which I have spoken, therefore as the Lord liveth, ye shall not depart except ye depart with an oath that ye will not return again against us to war. Now as ye are in our hands we will spill your blood upon the ground, or ye shall submit to the conditions which I have proposed.
앨 44:12 이에 이제 모로나이가 이 말을 하고 나자, 제래헴나가 자기 칼을 그대로 지니고, 모로나이에게 노하여 앞으로 내달아 모로나이를 죽이려 하였으나, 그가 그의 칼을 치켜들었을 때, 보라, 모로나이의 병사 중 하나가 그의 칼을 쳐서 땅에 떨어뜨리니, 그것이 칼자루에서 부러졌더라. 저가 또한 제래헴나를 쳐서 그의 머리 껍질을 벗기매 그것이 땅에 떨어지니, 이에 제래헴나가 저들 앞에서 물러나 자기 병사들 속으로 들어갔느니라. And now when Moroni had said these words, Zerahemnah retained his sword, and he was angry with Moroni, and he rushed forward that he might slay Moroni; but as he raised his sword, behold, one of Moroni’s soldiers smote it even to the earth, and it broke by the hilt; and he also smote Zerahemnah that he took off his scalp and it fell to the earth. And Zerahemnah withdrew from before them into the midst of his soldiers.
앨 44:13 이에 이렇게 되었나니 곁에 섰다가 제래헴나의 머리 껍질을 쳐서 벗긴 그 병사가, 머리털을 잡고 그 머리 껍질을 땅에서 집어 올려, 그것을 자기 칼끝에 얹고 그들에게 내어 밀며, 큰 소리로 그들에게 말하되, And it came to pass that the soldier who stood by, who smote off the scalp of Zerahemnah, took up the scalp from off the ground by the hair, and laid it upon the point of his sword, and stretched it forth unto them, saying unto them with a loud voice:
앨 44:14 너희가 너희 전쟁 무기를 넘기고 화평의 언약과 함께 떠나지 아니할진대, 너희 대장의 머리 껍질인 이 머리 껍질이 땅에 떨어진 것같이, 너희가 땅에 엎드러지리라 하였더라. Even as this scalp has fallen to the earth, which is the scalp of your chief, so shall ye fall to the earth except ye will deliver up your weapons of war and depart with a covenant of peace.
앨 44:15 이제 이 말을 듣고 또 칼 위에 있는 머리 껍질을 보고는, 두려움에 사로잡힌 자가 많았던지라, 많은 자가 나아와 자기의 전쟁 무기를 모로나이의 발에 던지고 화평의 언약을 맺었나니, 언약을 맺은 자마다 다 광야로 떠나는 것을 그들이 허락하였더라. Now there were many, when they heard these words and saw the scalp which was upon the sword, that were struck with fear; and many came forth and threw down their weapons of war at the feet of Moroni, and entered into a covenant of peace. And as many as entered into a covenant they suffered to depart into the wilderness.
앨 44:16 이제 이렇게 되었나니 제래헴나가 심히 노하여, 남아 있는 자기의 병사들을 충동하여 노하게 하고, 더욱 힘있게 니파이인들을 대적하여 싸우게 하였더라. Now it came to pass that Zerahemnah was exceedingly wroth, and he did stir up the remainder of his soldiers to anger, to contend more powerfully against the Nephites.
앨 44:17 이에 이제 모로나이가 레이맨인들의 완강함으로 인하여 노한지라, 자기 백성들을 명하여 그들을 급습하여 도륙하게 하였더라. 이에 이렇게 되었나니 저들이 레이맨인들을 도륙하기 시작하매, 또한 레이맨인들도 그들의 칼을 가지고 힘을 다하여 싸웠느니라. And now Moroni was angry, because of the stubbornness of the Lamanites; therefore he commanded his people that they should fall upon them and slay them. And it came to pass that they began to slay them; yea, and the Lamanites did contend with their swords and their might.
앨 44:18 그러나 보라, 그들의 벗은 피부와 그들의 맨머리는 니파이인들의 날카로운 칼에 그대로 노출되었나니, 참으로 보라, 그들은 찔리고 칼에 맞았으며, 또한 니파이인들의 칼 앞에서 심히 빨리 엎드러져, 참으로 모로나이의 병사가 예언한 대로 쓸어 버림을 당하기 시작하였더라. But behold, their naked skins and their bare heads were exposed to the sharp swords of the Nephites; yea, behold they were pierced and smitten, yea, and did fall exceedingly fast before the swords of the Nephites; and they began to be swept down, even as the soldier of Moroni had prophesied.
앨 44:19 이제 제래헴나가 그들이 바야흐로 모두 멸망당하게 된 것을 보고, 모로나이에게 크게 소리질러, 그들의 남은 목숨들을 살려 주면, 결코 다시 저들을 대적하여 싸우러 오지 아니할 것을 그와 그의 백성이 저들과 언약하겠다고 약속하였느니라. Now Zerahemnah, when he saw that they were all about to be destroyed, cried mightily unto Moroni, promising that he would covenant and also his people with them, if they would spare the remainder of their lives, that they never would come to war again against them.
앨 44:20 이에 이렇게 되었나니 모로나이가 백성 가운데 죽음의 일을 다시 그치게 하고, 레이맨인들에게서 전쟁 무기를 취하고, 그들이 자기와 화평의 언약을 맺은 후에는 광야로 떠남을 허락하였더라. And it came to pass that Moroni caused that the work of death should cease again among the people. And he took the weapons of war from the Lamanites; and after they had entered into a covenant with him of peace they were suffered to depart into the wilderness.
앨 44:21 이제 그 수가 많음으로 인하여 그들의 죽은 자의 수효를 세지 못하였나니, 참으로 니파이인들에게나 레이맨인들에게나 다 그 죽은 자의 수가 심히 많았더라. Now the number of their dead was not numbered because of the greatness of the number; yea, the number of their dead was exceedingly great, both on the Nephites and on the Lamanites.
앨 44:22 또 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 그들의 죽은 자들을 시돈 물에 던지매, 저들이 나아가 깊은 바다에 장사되었더라. And it came to pass that they did cast their dead into the waters of Sidon, and they have gone forth and are buried in the depths of the sea.
앨 44:23 그리고 니파이인들의 군대, 곧 모로나이의 군대는 돌아가, 저들의 집과 저들의 땅에 이르렀더라. And the armies of the Nephites, or of Moroni, returned and came to their houses and their lands.
앨 44:24 그리고 이같이 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제십팔년이 끝나고, 또 이같이 니파이의 판에 기록된 앨마의 기록이 끝났느니라. And thus ended the eighteenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi. And thus ended the record of Alma, which was written upon the plates of Nephi.
