앨 16:1 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제십일년 이월 오일, 곧 그때까지 제이라헤믈라 땅에 많은 평화가 있었고, 수년간 전쟁이나 다툼이 없었더니, 십일년 이월 오일에 전쟁의 외침이 온 땅에 들리니라. AND it came to pass in the eleventh year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi, on the fifth day of the second month, there having been much peace in the land of Zarahemla, there having been no wars nor contentions for a certain number of years, even until the fifth day of the second month in the eleventh year, there was a cry of war heard throughout the land.
앨 16:2 이는 보라 레이맨인들의 군대가 광야 쪽을 침범하여, 그 땅 경계로 들어오되, 참으로 앰몬아이하 성으로 들어와 백성들을 죽이며, 성을 멸하기 시작하였음이라. For behold, the armies of the Lamanites had come in upon the wilderness side, into the borders of the land, even into the city of Ammonihah, and began to slay the people and destroy the city.
앨 16:3 또 이제 이렇게 되었나니 니파이인들이 미처 그들을 그 땅 밖으로 몰아 내기에 충분한 군대를 일으키기도 전에, 그들이 앰몬아이하 성에 있던 백성들과 또한 노아의 경계 부근의 얼마를 멸하고, 다른 자들을 광야로 사로잡아 갔더라. And now it came to pass, before the Nephites could raise a sufficient army to drive them out of the land, they had destroyed the people who were in the city of Ammonihah, and also some around the borders of Noah, and taken others captive into the wilderness.
앨 16:4 이제 이렇게 되었나니 니파이인들이 광야로 사로잡혀 끌려간 자들을 도로 찾기 심히 원하였더라. Now it came to pass that the Nephites were desirous to obtain those who had been carried away captive into the wilderness.
앨 16:5 그러므로 니파이 군대의 총대장으로 임명되어 있던 자가, (그의 이름은 조램이요, 그에게는 두 아들이 있었으니 리하이와 에이허라) - 이제 조램과 그의 두 아들은 앨마가 교회의 대제사인 줄을 알고, 또 그가 예언의 영을 지니고 있음을 들었으므로, 앨마에게로 가서 그들이 레이맨인들에게 사로잡힌 그들의 형제들을 찾아 광야 어디로 들어가기를 주께서 원하시는지 알려 줄 것을 그에게 청하였더라. Therefore, he that had been appointed chief captain over the armies of the Nephites, (and his name was Zoram, and he had two sons, Lehi and Aha)—now Zoram and his two sons, knowing that Alma was high priest over the church, and having heard that he had the spirit of prophecy, therefore they went unto him and desired of him to know whither the Lord would that they should go into the wilderness in search of their brethren, who had been taken captive by the Lamanites.
앨 16:6 이에 이렇게 되었나니 앨마가 그 문제에 관하여 주께 여쭈었더라. 그리고는 앨마가 돌아와 그들에게 이르되, 보라, 레이맨인들이 멀리 맨타이 땅 경계 너머 위쪽, 남편 광야에서 시돈 강을 건너리니, 보라 너희는 시돈 강 동편 거기서 그들을 만날지라, 거기서 주가 레이맨인들에게 사로잡힌 네 형제들을 네게 넘겨주시리라 하니라. And it came to pass that Alma inquired of the Lord concerning the matter. And Alma returned and said unto them: Behold, the Lamanites will cross the river Sidon in the south wilderness, away up beyond the borders of the land of Manti. And behold there shall ye meet them, on the east of the river Sidon, and there the Lord will deliver unto thee thy brethren who have been taken captive by the Lamanites.
앨 16:7 이에 이렇게 되었나니 조램과 그의 아들들이 그 군대와 더불어 시돈 강을 건너, 멀리 맨타이의 경계 너머로 행군하여, 시돈 강 동편에 있는 남편 광야로 들어가더라. And it came to pass that Zoram and his sons crossed over the river Sidon, with their armies, and marched away beyond the borders of Manti into the south wilderness, which was on the east side of the river Sidon.
앨 16:8 그리고 레이맨인들의 군대를 급습하매, 레이맨인들이 흩어져 광야로 쫓겨 들어갔고, 그들은 레이맨인들에게 사로잡혔던 그들의 형제들을 취하였더니, 사로잡혔던 자들 중 한 영혼도 잃지 아니하였더라. 이에 그들은 자기 형제들로 말미암아 자신의 땅을 소유하게 되었더라. And they came upon the armies of the Lamanites, and the Lamanites were scattered and driven into the wilderness; and they took their brethren who had been taken captive by the Lamanites, and there was not one soul of them had been lost that were taken captive. And they were brought by their brethren to possess their own lands.
앨 16:9 그리고 이같이 판사 제십일년이 끝나니 레이맨인들은 그 땅에서 쫓겨났고, 앰몬아이하 백성은 멸망당하였더라. 참으로 앰몬아이하 사람 중 모든 산 자가 멸망당하였으며, 그들의 큰 성도 또한 멸망되었나니, 이는 그들이 이르기를 너무 커서 하나님도 멸하실 수 없다 하던 것이라. And thus ended the eleventh year of the judges, the Lamanites having been driven out of the land, and the people of Ammonihah were destroyed; yea, every living soul of the Ammonihahites was destroyed, and also their great city, which they said God could not destroy, because of its greatness.
앨 16:10 그러나 보라, 하루에 그것이 황폐하여 버린 바 되었으며, 주검들이 개들과 광야의 들짐승들에게 갈기갈기 찢기었더라. But behold, in one day it was left desolate; and the carcases were mangled by dogs and wild beasts of the wilderness.
앨 16:11 그럼에도 불구하고 여러 날 후 그들의 시체가 지면에 쌓여, 그 위에 덮이는 것이 엷게 덮이니, 이제 그 악취가 심히 컸으므로 백성들이 여러해 동안 앰몬아이하 땅을 차지하러 들어가지 아니하였더라. 또 그 곳은 니허인들의 황무지라 일컬어졌나니, 이는 죽임을 당한 그들이 니허의 신앙에 속하였으며, 그들의 땅이 황무한 채 있었음이더라. Nevertheless, after many days their dead bodies were heaped up upon the face of the earth, and they were covered with a shallow covering. And now so great was the scent thereof that the people did not go in to possess the land of Ammonihah for many years. And it was called Desolation of Nehors; for they were of the profession of Nehor, who were slain; and their lands remained desolate.
앨 16:12 그리고 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 십사 년까지 레이맨인들이 니파이인들을 대적하여 싸우러 다시 오지 아니하매, 이리하여 삼 년 동안 니파이 백성은 온 땅에서 계속하여 평화를 누렸더라. And the Lamanites did not come again to war against the Nephites until the fourteenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi. And thus for three years did the people of Nephi have continual peace in all the land.
앨 16:13 또 앨마와 앰율레크는 나아가 유대인들의 방식을 따라 지어진, 그들의 여러 성전에서와, 그들의 여러 성소에서, 또한 그들의 여러 회당에서 백성들에게 회개를 전파하더라. And Alma and Amulek went forth preaching repentance to the people in their temples, and in their sanctuaries, and also in their synagogues, which were built after the manner of the Jews.
앨 16:14 또 그들의 말을 듣고자 하는 자들에게는 누구에게나, 사람을 외모로 취함이 없이, 계속하여 하나님의 말씀을 나누어 주었더라. And as many as would hear their words, unto them they did impart the word of God, without any respect of persons, continually.
앨 16:15 또 이같이 앨마와 앰율레크와, 또한 이들 외에 이 일을 위하여 택함을 받은 많은 자들이 나아가, 그 온 땅에 두루 하나님의 말씀을 전파하매, 교회의 설립이 그 땅 전역에서, 주변의 모든 지역에서, 니파이인들의 모든 백성 가운데서, 일반적인 것이 되었더라. And thus did Alma and Amulek go forth, and also many more who had been chosen for the work, to preach the word throughout all the land. And the establishment of the church became general throughout the land, in all the region round about, among all the people of the Nephites.
앨 16:16 또 그들 중에 불평등함이 없었더라. 주께서 그 오시는 때에 그들 가운데 가르치실 말씀을 받아들이도록 사람의 자녀들의 생각을 예비하시려, 곧 그들의 마음을 예비하시려 온 지면에 그의 영을 쏟으시니 - And there was no inequality among them; the Lord did pour out his Spirit on all the face of the land to prepare the minds of the children of men, or to prepare their hearts to receive the word which should be taught among them at the time of his coming—
앨 16:17 이는 그들로 말씀을 거스려 완악하게 되지 않게 하여, 그들로 신앙 없는 자가 되어 멸망으로 나아가지 않게 하고, 도리어 기쁨으로 말씀을 받아, 한 가지로서 참포도나무에 접목되어, 주 그들의 하나님의 안식에 들어가게 하려 하심이라. That they might not be hardened against the word, that they might not be unbelieving, and go on to destruction, but that they might receive the word with joy, and as a branch be grafted into the true vine, that they might enter into the rest of the Lord their God.
앨 16:18 이제 백성 가운데 나아간 그 제사들은 일체의 거짓말함과 속임과 시기함과 다툼과 악독과 모욕함, 도적질함, 강탈함, 약탈함, 살인함, 간음을 범함 및 온갖 음란함을 금하도록 가르치며, 이러한 일들이 마땅히 그래서는 아니됨을 외치고 - Now those priests who did go forth among the people did preach against all lyings, and deceivings, and envyings, and strifes, and malice, and revilings, and stealing, robbing, plundering, murdering, committing adultery, and all manner of lasciviousness, crying that these things ought not so to be—
앨 16:19 반드시 속히 임할 일을 가르치되, 참으로 하나님의 아들의 오심과 그의 고난과 죽으심 그리고 죽은 자의 부활에 대하여도 가르쳤더라. Holding forth things which must shortly come; yea, holding forth the coming of the Son of God, his sufferings and death, and also the resurrection of the dead.
앨 16:20 또 백성 중 많은 이들이 하나님의 아들이 오실 곳에 대하여 묻더니, 그가 부활하신 후 그들에게 나타나시리라는 것을 가르치매, 이를 백성이 큰 기쁨과 즐거움으로 듣더라. And many of the people did inquire concerning the place where the Son of God should come; and they were taught that he would appear unto them after his resurrection; and this the people did hear with great joy and gladness.
앨 16:21 이에 이제 온 땅에 두루 교회가 세워지고 난 후 - 악마에게 승리를 거두고, 하나님의 말씀이 순수한 그대로 그 온 땅에 전파되고, 주께서는 백성들 위에 그의 복을 쏟으시니 - 이같이 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제십사년이 끝났느니라. And now after the church had been established throughout all the land—having got the victory over the devil, and the word of God being preached in its purity in all the land, and the Lord pouring out his blessings upon the people—thus ended the fourteenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
