소개	힐라맨, 기드 및 티옴너가 계책을 써서 맨타이 성을 취함 - 레이맨인들이 철수함 - 암몬 백성의 아들들이 굳게 서서 그들의 자유와 신앙을 지킬 때 보호하심을 받음. 주전 63~62년경.	Helaman, Gid, and Teomner take the city of Manti by a stratagem—The Lamanites withdraw—The sons of the people of Ammon are preserved as they stand fast in defense of their liberty and faith. [About 63 B.C.]
앨 58:1	또 보라, 이제 이렇게 되었나니 우리의 다음 목표는 맨타이 성을 손에 넣는 것이었느니라. 그러나 보라, 우리의 작은 부대로는 그들을 성에서 이끌어 낼 수 있는 방도가 없었나니, 이는 보라, 지금까지 우리가 행하였던 바를 그들이 기억하였으므로, 우리가 그들을 유인하여 그들로 그들의 요새를 떠나게 할 수 없었음이라.	And behold, now it came to pass that our next object was to obtain the city of Manti; but behold, there was no way that we could lead them out of the city by our small bands. For behold, they remembered that which we had hitherto done; therefore we could not decoy them away from their strongholds.
앨 58:2	또 그들이 우리의 군대보다 훨씬 더 수가 많았으므로, 우리가 감히 나아가 자기의 요새 안에 있는 그들을 공격할 수 없었느니라.	And they were so much more numerous than was our army that we durst not go forth and attack them in their strongholds.
앨 58:3	참으로, 또한 우리는 우리의 소유 가운데 우리가 되찾은 지역을 지키는 데 우리의 병사를 사용할 필요가 있게 되었나니, 그러므로 제이라헤믈라 땅으로부터 병력을 더 받고 또한 새로운 물자의 공급을 받기 위하여 기다릴 필요가 있게 되었느니라.	Yea, and it became expedient that we should employ our men to the maintaining those parts of the land which we had regained of our possessions; therefore it became expedient that we should wait, that we might receive more strength from the land of Zarahemla and also a new supply of provisions.
앨 58:4	또 이렇게 되었나니 이로 인해 내가 우리 땅의 통치자에게 사자를 보내어 우리 백성의 사정을 알리게 하였고, 또 이렇게 되었나니 우리는 제이라헤믈라 땅으로부터 물자와 병력을 받기를 기다렸느니라.	And it came to pass that I thus did send an embassy to the governor of our land, to acquaint him concerning the affairs of our people. And it came to pass that we did wait to receive provisions and strength from the land of Zarahemla.
앨 58:5	그러나 보라, 이것이 우리에게 거의 도움이 되지 못하였나니, 이는 레이맨인들 역시 매일같이 많은 병력과 물자를 받고 있었음이라, 이 시기에 우리의 상황이 이와 같았느니라.	But behold, this did profit us but little; for the Lamanites were also receiving great strength from day to day, and also many provisions; and thus were our circumstances at this period of time.
앨 58:6	또 레이맨인들은 계략을 써서 우리를 멸하기로 결정하고, 시시로 우리를 치러 진격해 나아왔으나, 우리는 그들의 대피소와 그들의 견고한 요새로 인하여 그들과 접전할 수 없었느니라.	And the Lamanites were sallying forth against us from time to time, resolving by stratagem to destroy us; nevertheless we could not come to battle with them, because of their retreats and their strongholds.
앨 58:7	그리고 이렇게 되었나니 우리는 여러 달 동안 이러한 어려운 상황에서 기다리다가, 마침내 식량이 부족하여 바야흐로 멸망하기에 이르렀느니라.	And it came to pass that we did wait in these difficult circumstances for the space of many months, even until we were about to perish for the want of food.
앨 58:8	그러나 이렇게 되었나니 우리는 우리를 돕기 위하여 이천 병사의 군대가 호송하여 온 식량을 받았느니라. 그리고 우리 자신과 우리 나라를 우리 원수들의 손에 떨어지지 않게 지키기 위하여, 참으로 무수한 적과 싸우기 위하여 우리가 받은 도움은 이것이 전부니라.	But it came to pass that we did receive food, which was guarded to us by an army of two thousand men to our assistance; and this is all the assistance which we did receive, to defend ourselves and our country from falling into the hands of our enemies, yea, to contend with an enemy which was innumerable.
앨 58:9	또 이제 우리의 이러한 낭패의 원인, 곧 그들이 우리에게 병력을 더 보내 주지 아니한 이유를 우리가 알지 못하였나니, 그러므로 우리는 혹시라도 하나님의 심판이 우리 땅에 임하여 우리로 패망하게 하며 온전히 멸망당하게 할까 하여 비통하며 또한 두려움으로 가득 차게 되었느니라.	And now the cause of these our embarrassments, or the cause why they did not send more strength unto us, we knew not; therefore we were grieved and also filled with fear, lest by any means the judgments of God should come upon our land, to our overthrow and utter destruction.
앨 58:10	그리하여 우리는 우리의 영혼을 하나님께 쏟아내어, 우리를 강하게 하시고 우리를 우리 원수의 손에서 건져 내시며, 또한 우리에게 힘을 주사 우리로 우리 백성의 부양을 위하여 우리의 성읍과 우리의 땅과 우리의 소유를 보전하게 해 주시기를 기도하였느니라.	Therefore we did pour out our souls in prayer to God, that he would strengthen us and deliver us out of the hands of our enemies, yea, and also give us strength that we might retain our cities, and our lands, and our possessions, for the support of our people.
앨 58:11	참으로 그리하매 주 우리의 하나님께서 우리를 돌아보시고 그가 우리를 구하시리라는 확신을 주셨나니, 참으로 그는 우리의 영혼에 평강을 말씀하시고, 우리에게 큰 신앙을 주시고, 우리로 하여금 그의 안에서 우리의 구원을 바라게 하셨느니라.	Yea, and it came to pass that the Lord our God did visit us with assurances that he would deliver us; yea, insomuch that he did speak peace to our souls, and did grant unto us great faith, and did cause us that we should hope for our deliverance in him.
앨 58:12	이에 우리가 이미 받은 우리의 적은 병력과 더불어 용기를 내었고, 우리의 적을 정복하며, 우리의 땅과 우리의 소유와 우리의 아내와 우리의 자녀와 우리의 자유의 대의를 지키겠다는 결의를 확고히 하였느니라.	And we did take courage with our small force which we had received, and were fixed with a determination to conquer our enemies, and to maintain our lands, and our possessions, and our wives, and our children, and the cause of our liberty.
앨 58:13	이리하여 우리는 맨타이 성에 있는 레이맨인들을 대적하기 위하여 우리의 힘을 다하여 나아가, 성에 가까운 광야 편에 우리의 장막을 쳤느니라.	And thus we did go forth with all our might against the Lamanites, who were in the city of Manti; and we did pitch our tents by the wilderness side, which was near to the city.
앨 58:14	그리고 이렇게 되었나니 다음날 레이맨인들이 우리가 성에 가까운 광야의 변경에 있는 것을 보고, 그들의 정탐들을 우리의 주위에 내보내어 우리 군대의 수효와 전력을 알아내고자 하였느니라.	And it came to pass that on the morrow, that when the Lamanites saw that we were in the borders by the wilderness which was near the city, that they sent out their spies round about us that they might discover the number and the strength of our army.
앨 58:15	이에 이렇게 되었나니 그들은 우리의 수효에 따를진대, 우리가 강하지 아니한 것을 보고 또 우리를 대적하여 싸우러 나와서 우리를 도륙하지 아니할진대, 우리가 그들의 보급을 차단할 것을 두려워하며 또한 그들의 수많은 군사로 쉽게 우리를 멸할 수 있으리라 생각하여, 그리하여 우리를 대적하여 싸우러 나올 준비를 하기 시작하였느니라.	And it came to pass that when they saw that we were not strong, according to our numbers, and fearing that we should cut them off from their support except they should come out to battle against us and kill us, and also supposing that they could easily destroy us with their numerous hosts, therefore they began to make preparations to come out against us to battle.
앨 58:16	이에 우리가 본즉 저희가 우리를 치러 나올 준비를 하고 있는지라, 보라, 내가 기드로 하여금 소수의 병사를 거느리고 광야에 매복하게 하고, 또한 티옴너와 소수의 병사들로 하여금 역시 광야에 매복하게 하였느니라.	And when we saw that they were making preparations to come out against us, behold, I caused that Gid, with a small number of men, should secrete himself in the wilderness, and also that Teomner and a small number of men should secrete themselves also in the wilderness.
앨 58:17	이제 기드와 그의 병사들은 우편에, 다른 자들은 좌편에 있었나니, 그들이 이같이 매복한 후에, 보라, 나는 나머지 나의 군대와 더불어 우리가 처음 우리의 장막을 친 그 같은 장소에 머물러 레이맨인들이 싸우러 나올 때를 대비하였느니라.	Now Gid and his men were on the right and the others on the left; and when they had thus secreted themselves, behold, I remained, with the remainder of my army, in that same place where we had first pitched our tents against the time that the Lamanites should come out to battle.
앨 58:18	이에 이렇게 되었나니 레이맨인들이 그들의 수많은 군대와 더불어 우리를 치러 나오는 지라, 그들이 와서 바야흐로 칼을 가지고 우리를 공격하려 하였을 때, 나는 나와 함께한 나의 병사들로 하여금 광야로 퇴각하게 하였느니라.	And it came to pass that the Lamanites did come out with their numerous army against us. And when they had come and were about to fall upon us with the sword, I caused that my men, those who were with me, should retreat into the wilderness.
앨 58:19	이에 이렇게 되었나니 레이맨인들이 심히 빠른 속도로 우리 뒤를 쫓아왔으니, 이는 그들이 우리를 따라잡아 우리를 도륙하기 심히 원하였음이라. 그리하여 그들이 우리를 따라 광야로 들어왔고, 우리가 기드와 티옴너의 한가운데를 지났으므로 저들이 레이맨인들에게 발견되지 아니하니라.	And it came to pass that the Lamanites did follow after us with great speed, for they were exceedingly desirous to overtake us that they might slay us; therefore they did follow us into the wilderness; and we did pass by in the midst of Gid and Teomner, insomuch that they were not discovered by the Lamanites.
앨 58:20	또 이렇게 되었나니 레이맨인들이 지나가고 나자, 다시 말해 그 군대가 지나가고 나자, 기드와 티옴너가 그 숨었던 곳에서 일어나 레이맨인의 정탐들을 끊어 버려 그들이 성으로 돌아가지 못하게 하였더라.	And it came to pass that when the Lamanites had passed by, or when the army had passed by, Gid and Teomner did rise up from their secret places, and did cut off the spies of the Lamanites that they should not return to the city.
앨 58:21	또 이렇게 되었나니 그들을 끊어 버린 후, 성으로 달려가서 성을 지키기 위하여 남아 있던 수비대를 습격하여 멸하고 성을 점령하였느니라.	And it came to pass that when they had cut them off, they ran to the city and fell upon the guards who were left to guard the city, insomuch that they did destroy them and did take possession of the city.
앨 58:22	이제 이렇게 된 것은 레이맨인들이 다만 약간의 수비대를 제외하고는, 그들의 온 군대로 하여금 유인을 받아 광야로 들어가게 한 연고이었더라.	Now this was done because the Lamanites did suffer their whole army, save a few guards only, to be led away into the wilderness.
앨 58:23	이에 이렇게 되었나니 기드와 티옴너가 이같이 하여 그들의 견고한 진지를 점령하였더라. 또 이렇게 되었나니 광야를 많이 지난 후에 우리가 제이라헤믈라 땅을 향하여 우리의 진로를 잡았더라.	And it came to pass that Gid and Teomner by this means had obtained possession of their strongholds. And it came to pass that we took our course, after having traveled much in the wilderness towards the land of Zarahemla.
앨 58:24	이에 레이맨인들은 자기들이 제이라헤믈라 땅을 향하여 행군하고 있음을 보고, 자기들을 멸망으로 이끌어 가려는 계획이 세워져 있는 가 심히 두려워하여 다시 광야로 퇴각하기 시작하되, 자기들이 왔던 그 길로 돌아가기 시작하였느니라.	And when the Lamanites saw that they were marching towards the land of Zarahemla, they were exceedingly afraid, lest there was a plan laid to lead them on to destruction; therefore they began to retreat into the wilderness again, yea, even back by the same way which they had come.
앨 58:25	또 보라, 때는 밤이었고 그들이 그 장막을 쳤으니, 이는 레이맨인의 총대장들이 생각하기를 니파이인들이 저들의 행군으로 인하여 지쳐 있으리라 하였음이라, 또 저들의 전 군대를 몰아왔다고 그들은 생각하였으므로 맨타이 성에 관하여는 조금도 생각하지 아니하였더라.	And behold, it was night and they did pitch their tents, for the chief captains of the Lamanites had supposed that the Nephites were weary because of their march; and supposing that they had driven their whole army therefore they took no thought concerning the city of Manti.
앨 58:26	이제 이렇게 되었나니 밤이 되었을 때, 나는 나의 병사들로 하여금 잠을 자지 말고 다른 길로 맨타이 땅을 향하여 진군하게 하였느니라.	Now it came to pass that when it was night, I caused that my men should not sleep, but that they should march forward by another way towards the land of Manti.
앨 58:27	이에 밤 동안의 우리의 이 행군으로 말미암아, 보라, 다음 날에는 우리가 레이맨인들을 앞섰고, 결국 우리가 그들보다 먼저 맨타이 성에 도착하였느니라.	And because of this our march in the night-time, behold, on the morrow we were beyond the Lamanites, insomuch that we did arrive before them at the city of Manti.
앨 58:28	이에 이리하여 이러한 계책으로 우리는 피 흘림이 없이 맨타이 성을 점령하게 되었느니라.	And thus it came to pass, that by this stratagem we did take possession of the city of Manti without the shedding of blood.
앨 58:29	또 이렇게 되었나니 레이맨인들의 군대는 성 가까이에 이르러 우리가 그들을 맞을 준비가 되어 있음을 보고, 심히 놀라고 큰 두려움에 사로잡혀 광야로 도망하였느니라.	And it came to pass that when the armies of the Lamanites did arrive near the city, and saw that we were prepared to meet them, they were astonished exceedingly and struck with great fear, insomuch that they did flee into the wilderness.
앨 58:30	참으로 또한 이렇게 되었나니 레이맨인들의 군대는 이쪽 지역을 다 벗어나 도망하였느니라. 그러나 보라, 그들은 이 땅에서 여자들과 어린아이들을 많이 데려갔느니라.	Yea, and it came to pass that the armies of the Lamanites did flee out of all this quarter of the land. But behold, they have carried with them many women and children out of the land.
앨 58:31	또 레이맨인들이 취하였던 그 성읍들은, 그 모두가 이 시간 우리의 소유하에 있으며, 레이맨인들에게 포로로 잡혀 끌려간 자들을 제외하고는 우리의 아버지들과 우리의 여자들과 우리의 자녀들이 모두 그들의 집으로 돌아가고 있느니라.	And those cities which had been taken by the Lamanites, all of them are at this period of time in our possession; and our fathers and our women and our children are returning to their homes, all save it be those who have been taken prisoners and carried off by the Lamanites.
앨 58:32	그러나 보라, 우리의 군대는 그처럼 많은 수의 성읍과 그처럼 큰 점령 지역을 유지하기에는 작도다.	But behold, our armies are small to maintain so great a number of cities and so great possessions.
앨 58:33	그러나 보라, 우리는 그 땅들에 대하여 우리에게 승리를 주사, 우리로 우리의 소유였던 성읍들과 땅들을 차지하게 하신 우리 하나님을 의뢰하노라.	But behold, we trust in our God who has given us victory over those lands, insomuch that we have obtained those cities and those lands, which were our own.
앨 58:34	이제 우리는 정부가 우리에게 병력을 더 주지 아니하는 까닭을 알지 못하며, 우리에게로 올라온 병사들도 어찌하여 우리가 더 많은 병력을 받지 못했는지 알지 못하고 있느니라.	Now we do not know the cause that the government does not grant us more strength; neither do those men who came up unto us know why we have not received greater strength.
앨 58:35	보라, 우리는 혹 그대들이 여의치 못하여 그쪽 지역으로 병력을 이끌어 간 것인지 알지 못하노니, 만일 그러할진대 우리는 불평하기를 원하지 아니하노라.	Behold, we do not know but what ye are unsuccessful, and ye have drawn away the forces into that quarter of the land; if so, we do not desire to murmur.
앨 58:36	그러나 만일 그렇지 아니할진대 정부 안에 어떠한 내분이 있어서 우리를 돕기 위해 병사를 더 보내지 아니함을 우리는 두려워하노니, 이는 그들이 보낸 것보다 그들의 수효가 더 많은 줄을 우리가 앎이라.	And if it is not so, behold, we fear that there is some faction in the government, that they do not send more men to our assistance; for we know that they are more numerous than that which they have sent.
앨 58:37	그러나 보라, 이는 중요한 일이 아니라 - 우리는 우리 군대의 약함에도 불구하고 하나님이 우리를 건지시고, 참으로 우리를 우리 원수의 손에서 건져 내시리라는 것을 믿노라.	But, behold, it mattereth not?e trust God will deliver us, notwithstanding the weakness of our armies, yea, and deliver us out of the hands of our enemies.
앨 58:38	보라, 이때는 제이십구년 말이니, 우리는 우리의 땅을 차지하고 있고, 레이맨인들은 니파이 땅으로 도망하였느니라.	Behold, this is the twenty and ninth year, in the latter end, and we are in the possession of our lands; and the Lamanites have fled to the land of Nephi.
앨 58:39	또 내가 그처럼 크게 칭찬한 암몬 백성의 아들들은 나와 함께 맨타이 성에 있나니, 주께서 그들을 도우시고, 또한 그들을 지켜 칼에 엎드러지지 않게 하신지라, 한 명도 죽임을 당하지 아니하였느니라.	And those sons of the people of Ammon, of whom I have so highly spoken, are with me in the city of Manti; and the Lord had supported them, yea, and kept them from falling by the sword, insomuch that even one soul has not been slain.
앨 58:40	그러나 보라, 그들은 많은 상처를 입었더라, 그럼에도 불구하고 그들은 하나님이 그들을 자유롭게 하신 그 자유 안에 굳게 서 있으며, 매일 엄격히 주 그들의 하나님을 기억하나니, 참으로 그들은 그의 율례와, 그의 법도와, 그의 계명을 끊임없이 지켜 준행하며, 장차 이를 일에 관한 예언을 굳게 믿고 있느니라.	But behold, they have received many wounds; nevertheless they stand fast in that liberty wherewith God has made them free; and they are strict to remember the Lord their God from day to day; yea, they do observe to keep his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments continually; and their faith is strong in the prophecies concerning that which is to come.
앨 58:41	또 이제 나의 사랑하는 형제 모로나이여, 우리를 구속하시고 우리를 자유롭게 하신 주 우리의 하나님께서 끊임없이 그대를 그의 면전에서 지키시기 원하며, 또한 그가 이 백성들에게 은혜를 베푸사, 우리의 생존을 위한 것이었으나 레이맨인들이 우리에게서 빼앗아 간 모든 것을 그대들이 찾는 데 성공하게 해 주시기를 원하노라. 이제 보라, 나의 서한을 끝맺노라. 나는 힐라맨이니 앨마의 아들이니라.	And now, my beloved brother, Moroni, may the Lord our God, who has redeemed us and made us free, keep you continually in his presence; yea, and may he favor this people, even that ye may have success in obtaining the possession of all that which the Lamanites have taken from us, which was for our support. And now, behold, I close mine epistle. I am Helaman, the son of Alma.
