앨 50:1 또 이제 이렇게 되었나니 모로나이가 전쟁을 위하여, 곧 레이맨인들로부터 그의 백성을 지키기 위하여 준비하기를 멈추지 아니하였으니, 이는 그가 그 군대로 하여금 판사 치세 이십 년 초에 시작하게 하되, 니파이인들이 소유한 온 땅에 걸쳐 모든 성읍 주위에 흙더미를 파 올리는 일을 시작하게 하였음이라. AND now it came to pass that Moroni did not stop making preparations for war, or to defend his people against the Lamanites; for he caused that his armies should commence in the commencement of the twentieth year of the reign of the judges, that they should commence in digging up heaps of earth round about all the cities, throughout all the land which was possessed by the Nephites.
앨 50:2 또 이러한 흙제방 위에 성읍을 둘러 사람의 키 높이로 목재, 곧 목재로 만든 구조물을 짓게 하였더라. And upon the top of these ridges of earth he caused that there should be timbers, yea, works of timbers built up to the height of a man, round about the cities.
앨 50:3 또 그러한 목재 구조물 위에 끝이 뾰족한 말뚝으로 짠 틀을 그 사방으로 둘러진 목재 위에 있게 하매, 그것들이 견고하고 높았더라. And he caused that upon those works of timbers there should be a frame of pickets built upon the timbers round about; and they were strong and high.
앨 50:4 또 그는 그 끝이 뾰족한 말뚝 구조물 위에 솟아오른 망대들을 세우게 하고, 그 망대들 위에 안전한 장소를 만들게 하여 레이맨인들의 돌이나 화살이 그들을 해하지 못하게 하였더라. And he caused towers to be erected that overlooked those works of pickets, and he caused places of security to be built upon those towers, that the stones and the arrows of the Lamanites could not hurt them.
앨 50:5 또 그들은 그 꼭대기에서 그들의 뜻대로, 또 그들의 힘이 닿는 대로 돌을 던져 성벽 가까이로 접근하려 하는 자를 죽일 수 있도록 준비를 갖추었나니, And they were prepared that they could cast stones from the top thereof, according to their pleasure and their strength, and slay him who should attempt to approach near the walls of the city.
앨 50:6 이같이 모로나이가 그들의 적이 올 때를 대비하여 그 온 땅 각 성읍 주위에 견고한 진지를 예비하였더라. Thus Moroni did prepare strongholds against the coming of their enemies, round about every city in all the land.
앨 50:7 또 이렇게 되었나니 모로나이가 자기 군대들로 하여금 동편 광야로 나아가게 하매, 참으로 그들이 나아가서, 동편 광야에 있던 레이맨인들을 제이라헤믈라 땅 남쪽인 저희의 본토로 다 쫓아 보냈더라. And it came to pass that Moroni caused that his armies should go forth into the east wilderness; yea, and they went forth and drove all the Lamanites who were in the east wilderness into their own lands, which were south of the land of Zarahemla.
앨 50:8 그리고 니파이 땅은 동해에서 서해까지 곧게 뻗어 있었더라. And the land of Nephi did run in a straight course from the east sea to the west.
앨 50:9 또 이렇게 되었나니 모로나이가 레이맨인들을 그들 소유의 땅 북편인 동편 광야에서 모두 쫓아 내고 나서, 제이라헤믈라 땅과 그 주변 땅의 주민들로 하여금 동편 광야로 나아가게 하되, 곧 바닷가의 변경까지 나아가 그 땅을 차지하게 하였더라. And it came to pass that when Moroni had driven all the Lamanites out of the east wilderness, which was north of the lands of their own possessions, he caused that the inhabitants who were in the land of Zarahemla and in the land round about should go forth into the east wilderness, even to the borders by the seashore, and possess the land.
앨 50:10 또 남쪽편 그들 소유의 땅 경계에 군대를 배치하고, 그들로 하여금 방어 시설을 세우게 하여 그들의 적의 손으로부터 그들의 군대와 그들의 백성을 안전히 지키게 하였더라. And he also placed armies on the south, in the borders of their possessions, and caused them to erect fortifications that they might secure their armies and their people from the hands of their enemies.
앨 50:11 또 이같이 그가 동편 광야에서와, 또한 서편에서 레이맨인들의 견고한 거점을 다 차단하고 니파이인들과 레이맨인들 사이, 곧 제이라헤믈라 땅과 니파이 땅 사이, 곧 서해로부터 시돈 강의 발원지 곁을 지나는 선을 강화하였으니 - 니파이인들은 북편의 모든 땅, 곧 풍요 땅의 북편 모든 땅을 그 마음대로 차지하였더라. And thus he cut off all the strongholds of the Lamanites in the east wilderness, yea, and also on the west, fortifying the line between the Nephites and the Lamanites, between the land of Zarahemla and the land of Nephi, from the west sea, running by the head of the river Sidon—the Nephites possessing all the land northward, yea, even all the land which was northward of the land Bountiful, according to their pleasure.
앨 50:12 이같이 모로나이는 자기의 군대와 더불어 그들 소유의 땅에서 레이맨인들의 세력과 권력을 끊어 버려서, 저들로 그들 소유의 땅에서 아무 권력도 갖지 못하게 하기를 꾀하였으니, 모로나이의 군대는 그의 일이 가져다주는 보호에 대한 확신으로 말미암아 매일같이 불어났더라. Thus Moroni, with his armies, which did increase daily because of the assurance of protection which his works did bring forth unto them, did seek to cut off the strength and the power of the Lamanites from off the lands of their possessions, that they should have no power upon the lands of their possession.
앨 50:13 또 이렇게 되었나니 니파이인들은 한 성읍을 세우기 시작하였고, 그 성의 이름을 모로나이라 하였으니, 그것은 동해 가까이에 있으며, 남쪽으로 레이맨인의 땅 경계선 가까이에 있더라. And it came to pass that the Nephites began the foundation of a city, and they called the name of the city Moroni; and it was by the east sea; and it was on the south by the line of the possessions of the Lamanites.
앨 50:14 그들이 또한 모로나이 성과 아론 성 사이, 아론과 모로나이의 경계를 연결하는 곳에 성 하나를 세우기 시작하여 그 성, 곧 그 땅 이름을 니파이하라 하였더라. And they also began a foundation for a city between the city of Moroni and the city of Aaron, joining the borders of Aaron and Moroni; and they called the name of the city, or the land, Nephihah.
앨 50:15 그리고 그들이 또한 그 같은 해에 북쪽으로 많은 성읍들을 짓기 시작하되, 하나를 특이한 방식으로 지어 리하이라 칭하였으니, 이는 북쪽 바닷가의 변방 가까이에 있더라. And they also began in that same year to build many cities on the north, one in a particular manner which they called Lehi, which was in the north by the borders of the seashore.
앨 50:16 그리고 이같이 제이십년이 끝났느니라. And thus ended the twentieth year.
앨 50:17 또 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제이십일년 초에도 이같이 니파이 백성은 번영하는 가운데 있었더라. And in these prosperous circumstances were the people of Nephi in the commencement of the twenty and first year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
앨 50:18 또 그들은 심히 번영하고, 또 심히 부하게 되었으며, 또한 번성하고 그 땅에서 점점 강해졌더라. And they did prosper exceedingly, and they became exceedingly rich; yea, and they did multiply and wax strong in the land.
앨 50:19 또 이리하여 우리는 주의 모든 행하심이 사람의 자녀들에게 그의 모든 말씀을 이루시기까지 얼마나 자비롭고 또 공의로운지를 알게 되나니, 참으로 우리는 이 시간에도 그의 말씀이 입증되고 있음을 볼 수 있느니라. 곧 그가 리하이에게 말씀하신 것이니 이르시기를, And thus we see how merciful and just are all the dealings of the Lord, to the fulfilling of all his words unto the children of men; yea, we can behold that his words are verified, even at this time, which he spake unto Lehi, saying:
앨 50:20 너와 네 자손에게 복이 있나니 그들이 복을 받을지라, 그들이 내 계명을 지킬진대 이 땅에서 번성하리라. 그러나 기억하라. 그들이 내 계명을 지키지 않을진대 그들은 주의 면전에서 끊어지리라 하셨느니라. Blessed art thou and thy children; and they shall be blessed, inasmuch as they shall keep my commandments they shall prosper in the land. But remember, inasmuch as they will not keep my commandments they shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord.
앨 50:21 이에 우리는 니파이 백성에게 이 약속이 입증된 것을 보나니, 이는 그들의 전쟁과 그들의 멸망을 그들에게 초래한 것은 그들 스스로의 가운데 있었던 그들의 다툼과 그들의 분쟁이요, 참으로 그들의 살인함과 그들의 약탈함 그들의 우상 숭배 그들의 음행과 그들의 가증한 일이었음이니라. And we see that these promises have been verified to the people of Nephi; for it has been their quarrelings and their contentions, yea, their murderings, and their plunderings, their idolatry, their whoredoms, and their abominations, which were among themselves, which brought upon them their wars and their destructions.
앨 50:22 또 주의 계명을 충실히 지키는 자들은 어느 때나 건지심을 입었으나, 한편 그들의 간악한 형제들 수천 명은 속박에 들거나, 칼에 멸망하거나, 믿지 않음에 빠져들어 레이맨인들과 섞이게 되었음이니라. And those who were faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord were delivered at all times, whilst thousands of their wicked brethren have been consigned to bondage, or to perish by the sword, or to dwindle in unbelief, and mingle with the Lamanites.
앨 50:23 그러나 보라 니파이의 시대 이래로, 니파이 백성에게 있어서 모로나이의 때, 참으로 곧 이때, 판사 치세 제이십일년보다도 더 행복한 때가 결코 없었더라. But behold there never was a happier time among the people of Nephi, since the days of Nephi, than in the days of Moroni, yea, even at this time, in the twenty and first year of the reign of the judges.
앨 50:24 또 이렇게 되었나니 판사 치세 제이십이년도 화평한 가운데 끝났으며, 또한 제이십삼년도 그러하였더라. And it came to pass that the twenty and second year of the reign of the judges also ended in peace; yea, and also the twenty and third year.
앨 50:25 또 이렇게 되었나니 판사 치세 제이십사년 초에, 리하이 땅과 모리앤톤 땅에 관하여 그들 중에 일어난 분쟁이 아니었다면 니파이 백성 가운데는 역시 평화가 있었을 것이라, 모리앤톤 땅은 리하이의 경계에 닿아 있으며, 이 두 땅은 바닷가의 변방에 있더라. And it came to pass that in the commencement of the twenty and fourth year of the reign of the judges, there would also have been peace among the people of Nephi had it not been for a contention which took place among them concerning the land of Lehi, and the land of Morianton, which joined upon the borders of Lehi; both of which were on the borders by the seashore.
앨 50:26 이는 보라, 모리앤톤 땅을 소유한 백성이 리하이 땅의 일부를 자기 것이라 주장하였음이라, 그리하여 그들 사이에 격한 다툼이 생겨 급기야는 모리앤톤 백성이 그 형제를 대적하여 무기를 들기에 이르렀나니, 이들은 리하이 백성을 칼로 도륙하기로 작정하였더라. For behold, the people who possessed the land of Morianton did claim a part of the land of Lehi; therefore there began to be a warm contention between them, insomuch that the people of Morianton took up arms against their brethren, and they were determined by the sword to slay them.
앨 50:27 그러나 보라, 리하이 땅을 소유한 백성이 모로나이의 진영으로 도망하여, 그에게 도움을 호소하였으니, 이는 보라 그들에게 잘못이 있지 아니함이었더라. But behold, the people who possessed the land of Lehi fled to the camp of Moroni, and appealed unto him for assistance; for behold they were not in the wrong.
앨 50:28 이에 이렇게 되었나니 모리앤톤이라 이름하는 자가 이끄는 모리앤톤 백성이, 리하이 백성이 모로나이의 진영으로 도망한 것을 알고, 모로나이의 군대가 자기들을 엄습하여 자기들을 멸할까 하여 심히 두려워하였던지라. And it came to pass that when the people of Morianton, who were led by a man whose name was Morianton, found that the people of Lehi had fled to the camp of Moroni, they were exceedingly fearful lest the army of Moroni should come upon them and destroy them.
앨 50:29 이에 모리앤톤이, 큰 호수들로 뒤덮인 북방 땅으로 도망하여 북방 땅을 차지하려는 뜻을 그들의 마음에 넣었더라. Therefore, Morianton put it into their hearts that they should flee to the land which was northward, which was covered with large bodies of water, and take possession of the land which was northward.
앨 50:30 그리고 보라, 그들이 이 계획을 실천에 옮기려 하였더라, (그리되었더라면 이는 통탄할 만한 일이었으리라) 그러나 보라, 모리앤톤은 성정이 격한 사람이라, 그리하여 저가 한 여종에게 노하여, 그에게 달려들어 그를 심히 때렸는지라. And behold, they would have carried this plan into effect, (which would have been a cause to have been lamented) but behold, Morianton being a man of much passion, therefore he was angry with one of his maid servants, and he fell upon her and beat her much.
앨 50:31 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그가 도망하여 모로나이의 진영으로 넘어와서, 모로나이에게 그 일에 관해서와, 또한 북방 땅으로 도망하려는 그들의 의도에 관하여 모든 것을 다 고하였더라. And it came to pass that she fled, and came over to the camp of Moroni, and told Moroni all things concerning the matter, and also concerning their intentions to flee into the land northward.
앨 50:32 이제 보라, 풍요 땅에 있던 백성은, 아니 그보다도 모로나이는, 그들이 모리앤톤의 말을 듣고 그의 백성과 연합하게 되고, 또 그리하여 그가 그 지역을 차지하게 될까 염려하였나니, 그 일은 니파이 백성 가운데 심각한 결과를 초래할 기초를 놓게 되고, 참으로 이러한 결과는 그들의 자유를 무너뜨리게 될 것이었더라. Now behold, the people who were in the land Bountiful, or rather Moroni, feared that they would hearken to the words of Morianton and unite with his people, and thus he would obtain possession of those parts of the land, which would lay a foundation for serious consequences among the people of Nephi, yea, which consequences would lead to the overthrow of their liberty.
앨 50:33 그리하여 모로나이는 군대를 그 진과 함께 보내어, 모리앤톤의 백성을 가로막아, 그들이 북방 땅으로 도망하는 것을 막게 하였더라. Therefore Moroni sent an army, with their camp, to head the people of Morianton, to stop their flight into the land northward.
앨 50:34 이에 이렇게 되었나니 저희가 황무 땅 경계에 이르도록 그들을 가로막지 못하였으나, 거기 곧 바다 가까이로 북방 땅에 이르는 좁은 통로에서 그들을 가로막았으니, 참으로 서쪽으로나 동쪽으로나 모두 바다에 가까운 곳이더라. And it came to pass that they did not head them until they had come to the borders of the land Desolation; and there they did head them, by the narrow pass which led by the sea into the land northward, yea, by the sea, on the west and on the east.
앨 50:35 또 이렇게 되었나니 모로나이가 보낸 군대를 이끈 사람은 이름이 티앤쿰이라 하는 자더니, 그 군대가 모리앤톤의 백성을 만나매, 모리앤톤의 백성들이 (그의 간악함과 그의 감언이설에 고무되어) 심히 완강한지라, 그들 사이에 싸움이 시작되었으나, 이 싸움에서 티앤쿰이 모리앤톤을 죽이고, 그의 군대를 파하고, 그들을 포로로 사로잡아 가지고, 모로나이의 진영으로 돌아왔더라. 이같이 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제이십사년이 끝났느니라. And it came to pass that the army which was sent by Moroni, which was led by a man whose name was Teancum, did meet the people of Morianton; and so stubborn were the people of Morianton, (being inspired by his wickedness and his flattering words) that a battle commenced between them, in the which Teancum did slay Morianton and defeat his army, and took them prisoners, and returned to the camp of Moroni. And thus ended the twenty and fourth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
앨 50:36 또 이같이 모리앤톤 백성을 다시 데려와서, 평화를 지키겠다는 언약하에 그들을 모리앤톤 땅으로 되돌리매, 그들과 리하이 백성 사이에 연합이 생겼고 이에 이들도 자기 땅으로 돌아갔더라. And thus were the people of Morianton brought back. And upon their covenanting to keep the peace they were restored to the land of Morianton, and a union took place between them and the people of Lehi; and they were also restored to their lands.
앨 50:37 또 이렇게 되었나니 니파이 백성이 다시 평화를 회복한 그 해에, 이대 대판사 니파이하가 하나님 앞에서 참으로 올바르게 판사직을 수행하고 죽었느니라. And it came to pass that in the same year that the people of Nephi had peace restored unto them, that Nephihah, the second chief judge, died, having filled the judgment-seat with perfect uprightness before God.
앨 50:38 그러할지라도 그는 앨마와 그의 조상들이 지극히 거룩한 것으로 여긴 저 기록들과 저 물건들을 맡으라는 앨마의 뜻을 거절하였나니, 그러므로 앨마가 그것들을 그의 아들 힐라맨에게 넘겨주었느니라. Nevertheless, he had refused Alma to take possession of those records and those things which were esteemed by Alma and his fathers to be most sacred; therefore Alma had conferred them upon his son, Helaman.
앨 50:39 보라, 이렇게 되었나니 니파이하의 아들이 그 부친을 대신하여 판사직을 채우도록 임명되니라. 참으로 그는 의롭게 판단하며 백성의 안녕과 자유를 지키며, 그들에게 주 그들의 하나님을 예배할 성스러운 특권을 허락하며, 참으로 그의 온 생애동안 하나님의 대의를 받들고 지키며, 악인을 그 범죄한대로 정의에 붙이기 위하여 맹세와 거룩한 의식으로써 백성 위에 통치자로 총리로 임명되었더라. Behold, it came to pass that the son of Nephihah was appointed to fill the judgment-seat, in the stead of his father; yea, he was appointed chief judge and governor over the people, with an oath and sacred ordinance to judge righteously, and to keep the peace and the freedom of the people, and to grant unto them their sacred privileges to worship the Lord their God, yea, to support and maintain the cause of God all his days, and to bring the wicked to justice according to their crime.
앨 50:40 이제 보라, 그의 이름은 페이호랜이니, 페이호랜이 그 부친의 자리를 채우고 제이십사년 말에 니파이 백성을 다스리기 시작하였느니라. Now behold, his name was Pahoran. And Pahoran did fill the seat of his father, and did commence his reign in the end of the twenty and fourth year, over the people of Nephi.
