NOW we will return in our record to Amalickiah and those who had fled with him into the wilderness; for, behold, he had taken those who went with him, and went up in the land of Nephi among the Lamanites, and did stir up the Lamanites to anger against the people of Nephi, insomuch that the king of the Lamanites sent a proclamation throughout all his land, among all his people, that they should gather themselves together again to go to battle against the Nephites.
앨 47:2 이에 이렇게 되었나니 포고가 그들 가운데 나아가매 그들이 심히 두려워하였으니, 참으로 그들은 왕을 노엽게 할 것을 두려워하였으며, 또한 그들의 목숨을 잃을까 하여 니파이인들을 대적하여 싸우러 가기를 두려워하였더라. 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그들, 곧 그들의 대부분이 왕의 명령을 복종하려 하지 않았더라. And it came to pass that when the proclamation had gone forth among them they were exceedingly afraid; yea, they feared to displease the king, and they also feared to go to battle against the Nephites lest they should lose their lives. And it came to pass that they would not, or the more part of them would not, obey the commandments of the king.
앨 47:3 이에 이제 이렇게 되었나니 왕이 그들의 불복종으로 인하여 노한지라, 그 군대 중 자기의 명령에 복종하는 부대의 지휘권을 아맬리카이아에게 주고, 그에게 명하여 나아가 그들을 억지로 무장시키게 하였더라. And now it came to pass that the king was wroth because of their disobedience; therefore he gave Amalickiah the command of that part of his army which was obedient unto his commands, and commanded him that he should go forth and compel them to arms.
앨 47:4 이제 보라, 이것은 바로 아맬리카이아가 바라던 것이었으니, 이는 그가 악을 행하기에 심히 간교한 자 이었으므로 그 마음에 레이맨인의 왕을 폐위시킬 계획을 세웠음이더라. Now behold, this was the desire of Amalickiah; for he being a very subtle man to do evil therefore he laid the plan in his heart to dethrone the king of the Lamanites.
앨 47:5 이에 이제 그가 레이맨인들 가운데 왕을 지지하는 자들의 지휘권을 가졌고, 또 복종하지 아니하는 자들의 환심 사기를 꾀하였으므로, 오나이다라 하는 곳으로 나아갔으니, 그리로 모든 레이맨인들이 도망하였음이라. 이는 그들이 병사들이 오는 것을 발견하고, 자기들을 멸하려 오고 있다고 생각하였으므로, 오나이다로, 무기가 있는 곳으로 도망하였음이라. And now he had got the command of those parts of the Lamanites who were in favor of the king; and he sought to gain favor of those who were not obedient; therefore he went forward to the place which was called Onidah, for thither had all the Lamanites fled; for they discovered the army coming, and, supposing that they were coming to destroy them, therefore they fled to Onidah, to the place of arms.
앨 47:6 또 그들은 한 사람을 임명하여 그들 위에 왕과 지도자를 삼았고, 니파이인들을 치러 가는 일에 복종하지 않기로 그 마음에 굳은 결심으로 확정하고 있었더라. And they had appointed a man to be a king and a leader over them, being fixed in their minds with a determined resolution that they would not be subjected to go against the Nephites.
앨 47:7 또 이렇게 되었나니 그들은 앤티파스라 하는 산꼭대기에 함께 모여 싸울 준비를 하고 있었더라. And it came to pass that they had gathered themselves together upon the top of the mount which was called Antipas, in preparation to battle.
앨 47:8 이제 왕의 명령을 좇아 그들과 싸우는 것은 아맬리카이아의 의도가 아니었나니, 보라, 도리어 레이맨인 군대의 환심을 사서, 스스로 그들의 수령이 되어 왕을 폐위시키고 왕국을 차지하려는 것이 그의 의도였더라. Now it was not Amalickiah’s intention to give them battle according to the commandments of the king; but behold, it was his intention to gain favor with the armies of the Lamanites, that he might place himself at their head and dethrone the king and take possession of the kingdom.
앨 47:9 이에 보라, 이렇게 되었나니 그가 그 군대로 하여금 앤티파스 산 가까운 골짜기에 그들의 장막을 치게 하였더라. And behold, it came to pass that he caused his army to pitch their tents in the valley which was near the mount Antipas.
앨 47:10 또 이렇게 되었나니 밤이 되매 그가 밀사를 앤티파스 산으로 보내어, 산 위에 있는 자들의 지도자에게 - 그의 이름은 리혼타이더라 - 저에게 자기가 저와 말하기를 원하니, 산기슭으로 내려와 줄 것을 요청하였더라. And it came to pass that when it was night he sent a secret embassy into the mount Antipas, desiring that the leader of those who were upon the mount, whose name was Lehonti, that he should come down to the foot of the mount, for he desired to speak with him.
앨 47:11 이에 이렇게 되었나니 리혼타이가 전갈을 받고는 감히 산기슭으로 내려가려 아니하니라. 이에 이렇게 되었나니 아맬리카이아가 두 번째로 다시 사람을 보내어, 저가 내려와 주기를 요청하였더라. 또 이렇게 되었나니 리혼타이가 내려오려 하지 아니하매, 그가 세 번째로 다시 보내었더라. And it came to pass that when Lehonti received the message he durst not go down to the foot of the mount. And it came to pass that Amalickiah sent again the second time, desiring him to come down. And it came to pass that Lehonti would not; and he sent again the third time.
앨 47:12 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 아맬리카이아가 리혼타이를 산에서 떠나 내려오게 할 수 없음을 깨닫고, 산으로 올라가 리혼타이의 진 가까이로 가서, 네 번째로 다시 자기의 전갈을 리혼타이에게 보내어 내려오기를 청하되, 저가 그 호위병들을 그와 함께 데리고 올 것을 청하였더라. And it came to pass that when Amalickiah found that he could not get Lehonti to come down off from the mount, he went up into the mount, nearly to Lehonti’s camp; and he sent again the fourth time his message unto Lehonti, desiring that he would come down, and that he would bring his guards with him.
앨 47:13 이에 이렇게 되었나니 리혼타이가 그 호위병들을 거느리고 아맬리카이아에게로 내려오매, 아맬리카이아가 저에게 저의 군대를 거느리고 밤중에 내려와서, 왕이 자기에게 그 지휘권을 준 병사들을 그 진에 있는 채로 포위하기를 청하고, 만일 자기(아맬리카이아)로 전 군대의 부지휘관을 삼겠다 하면 그들을 리혼타이의 손에 넘기겠다 하였느니라. And it came to pass that when Lehonti had come down with his guards to Amalickiah, that Amalickiah desired him to come down with his army in the night-time, and surround those men in their camps over whom the king had given him command, and that he would deliver them up into Lehonti’s hands, if he would make him (Amalickiah) a second leader over the whole army.
앨 47:14 이에 이렇게 되었나니 리혼타이가 자기 병사들을 거느리고 내려와서 아맬리카이아의 병사들을 포위하니, 그들이 새벽에 깨기 전에 리혼타이의 군대에게 포위되었더라. And it came to pass that Lehonti came down with his men and surrounded the men of Amalickiah, so that before they awoke at the dawn of day they were surrounded by the armies of Lehonti.
앨 47:15 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 자기들이 포위된 것을 보고, 자기들이 멸망당하지 않도록 그 형제들과 합류하게 해 줄 것을 아맬리카이아에게 간청하니, 이제 이는 바로 아맬리카이아가 바라던 일이었음이라. And it came to pass that when they saw that they were surrounded, they plead with Amalickiah that he would suffer them to fall in with their brethren, that they might not be destroyed. Now this was the very thing which Amalickiah desired.
앨 47:16 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그가 왕의 명과는 반대로 자기의 병사들을 넘겨주었느니라. 이제 이것은 아맬리카이아가 원한 일이었으니, 곧 왕을 폐위시키려는 자기의 계획을 이루고자 함이었더라. And it came to pass that he delivered his men, contrary to the commands of the king. Now this was the thing that Amalickiah desired, that he might accomplish his designs in dethroning the king.
앨 47:17 이제 그들의 최고 지휘관이 죽임을 당하면, 부지휘관을 그들의 최고 지휘관으로 임명하는 것이 레이맨인들 사이의 관습이었더라. Now it was the custom among the Lamanites, if their chief leader was killed, to appoint the second leader to be their chief leader.
앨 47:18 이에 이렇게 되었나니 아맬리카이아가 그의 종 가운데 하나로 하여금 리혼타이에게 점차로 독약을 먹이게 하매, 필경은 저가 죽었느니라. And it came to pass that Amalickiah caused that one of his servants should administer poison by degrees to Lehonti, that he died.
앨 47:19 이제 리혼타이가 죽으매, 레이맨인들이 아맬리카이아를 임명하여 그들의 지도자와 그들의 사령관을 삼았더라. Now, when Lehonti was dead, the Lamanites appointed Amalickiah to be their leader and their chief commander.
앨 47:20 이에 이렇게 되었나니 아맬리카이아가 그의 군대를 거느리고 니파이 땅으로 행군하여, (이는 저가 자기의 원하던 바를 얻었음이라) 수도 니파이 성에 이르렀더라. And it came to pass that Amalickiah marched with his armies (for he had gained his desires) to the land of Nephi, to the city of Nephi, which was the chief city.
앨 47:21 이에 왕이 그 시위병들을 거느리고 그를 맞으러 나왔으니, 이는 아맬리카이아가 자기의 명을 이루었고, 아맬리카이아가 니파이인들을 대적하여 싸우러 갈 군대를 그처럼 많이 모은 줄로 생각하였음이라. And the king came out to meet him with his guards, for he supposed that Amalickiah had fulfilled his commands, and that Amalickiah had gathered together so great an army to go against the Nephites to battle.
앨 47:22 그러나 보라, 왕이 그를 맞으러 나올새, 아맬리카이아가 그의 종들로 하여금 나아가 왕을 만나게 하매, 그들이 가서 마치 왕의 위대함으로 인하여 왕을 존경하려 함같이 왕 앞에 엎드렸더라. But behold, as the king came out to meet him Amalickiah caused that his servants should go forth to meet the king. And they went and bowed themselves before the king, as if to reverence him because of his greatness.
앨 47:23 이에 이렇게 되었나니 왕이 레이맨인들의 관습대로 평화의 표시로서 그들을 일으키고자 그 손을 내미니, 이 관습은 그들이 니파이인들에게서 취한 것이더라. And it came to pass that the king put forth his hand to raise them, as was the custom with the Lamanites, as a token of peace, which custom they had taken from the Nephites.
앨 47:24 이에 이렇게 되었나니 왕이 첫째를 땅에서 일으킨 즉, 보라 그가 왕의 심장을 찌르매 왕이 땅에 쓰러졌느니라. And it came to pass that when he had raised the first from the ground, behold he stabbed the king to the heart; and he fell to the earth.
앨 47:25 이제 왕의 종들은 도망하고, 아맬리카이아의 종들은 일어나 소리높여 외쳐 이르되, Now the servants of the king fled; and the servants of Amalickiah raised a cry, saying:
앨 47:26 보라, 왕의 종들이 왕의 심장을 찔러 왕은 쓰러졌고 종들은 달아났도다, 와서 보라 하였느니라. Behold, the servants of the king have stabbed him to the heart, and he has fallen and they have fled; behold, come and see.
앨 47:27 이에 이렇게 되었나니 아맬리카이아가 명하여 자기의 군대로 하여금 행군해 나아가 왕에게 무슨 일이 일어났는지 보게 하매, 그들이 그 장소에 이르러 본즉, 왕이 그 엉긴 피 가운데 누웠는지라, 아맬리카이아가 짐짓 노한 체하고 이르되, 누구든지 왕을 사랑하였거든 그는 나아가 왕의 종들을 추격하여 그들로 죽임을 당하게 할지니라 하였더라. And it came to pass that Amalickiah commanded that his armies should march forth and see what had happened to the king; and when they had come to the spot, and found the king lying in his gore, Amalickiah pretended to be wroth, and said: Whosoever loved the king, let him go forth, and pursue his servants that they may be slain.
앨 47:28 이에 이렇게 되었나니 왕을 사랑한 자들이 다 이 말을 듣고, 나아와 모두 왕의 종들의 뒤를 추격하였더라. And it came to pass that all they who loved the king, when they heard these words, came forth and pursued after the servants of the king.
앨 47:29 이제 왕의 종들은 군대가 그들의 뒤를 추격하는 것을 보고, 다시 놀라 광야로 도망하여 제이라헤믈라 땅으로 건너가서 암몬 백성에게 합류하였더라. Now when the servants of the king saw an army pursuing after them, they were frightened again, and fled into the wilderness, and came over into the land of Zarahemla and joined the people of Ammon.
앨 47:30 또 그들의 뒤를 추격하던 군대는 그들의 뒤를 추격하다가 잡지 못하고 돌아오니, 이리하여 아맬리카이아가 그의 기만 행위로 백성의 마음을 얻었느니라. And the army which pursued after them returned, having pursued after them in vain; and thus Amalickiah, by his fraud, gained the hearts of the people.
앨 47:31 또 이렇게 되었나니 다음 날 아맬리카이아가 그 군대를 거느리고 니파이 성에 들어가, 그 성을 점령하였더라. And it came to pass on the morrow he entered the city Nephi with his armies, and took possession of the city.
앨 47:32 또 이제 이렇게 되었나니 왕후가 왕이 죽임을 당하였음을 듣고 - 이는 아맬리카이아가 왕후에게 사자를 보내어, 왕이 그 종들에게 죽임을 당한 것과 자기가 군대로 그들을 추적하였으나 잡지 못하였고, 그들은 도망해 버렸음을 알렸음이라 - And now it came to pass that the queen, when she had heard that the king was slain—for Amalickiah had sent an embassy to the queen informing her that the king had been slain by his servants, that he had pursued them with his army, but it was in vain, and they had made their escape—
앨 47:33 그러므로 왕후가 이 전갈을 받고 아맬리카이아에게 사람을 보내어, 성의 백성들을 살려 줄 것을 그에게 요청하고, 또한 자기에게로 들어와 줄 것을 요청하고, 또한 왕의 죽음에 관하여 증거할 증인들을 함께 데려올 것을 그에게 요청하였더라. Therefore, when the queen had received this message she sent unto Amalickiah, desiring him that he would spare the people of the city; and she also desired him that he should come in unto her; and she also desired him that he should bring witnesses with him to testify concerning the death of the king.
앨 47:34 이에 이렇게 되었나니 아맬리카이아가 왕을 죽인 바로 그 종과 그와 함께 있었던 자들을 다 데리고, 왕후에게로 들어가 왕후가 좌정한 곳에 이르매, 그들이 다 왕후에게 증거하기를, 왕이 자기 자신의 종들에게 죽임을 당하였다 하고, 또 이르되, 저들이 도망하였으니 이것이 저들에 대하여 증거하지 아니하나이까 하고, 이같이 그들의 왕의 죽음에 관하여 왕후를 납득시켰더라. And it came to pass that Amalickiah took the same servant that slew the king, and all them who were with him, and went in unto the queen, unto the place where she sat; and they all testified unto her that the king was slain by his own servants; and they said also: They have fled; does not this testify against them? And thus they satisfied the queen concerning the death of the king.
앨 47:35 또 이렇게 되었나니 아맬리카이아가 왕후의 호의를 구하고, 그를 취하여 자기의 아내를 삼았더라. 이리하여 자기의 기만 행위와, 자기의 간교한 종들의 도움으로 그가 왕국을 얻었나니, 참으로 그는 그 온 땅에서, 레이맨인들과 레뮤엘인들과 이스마엘인들 및 니파이의 다스린 때로부터 현재에 이르기까지 니파이인들의 모든 이반자들로 구성된 모든 레이맨인 백성 가운데서 인정된 왕이었더라. And it came to pass that Amalickiah sought the favor of the queen, and took her unto him to wife; and thus by his fraud, and by the assistance of his cunning servants, he obtained the kingdom; yea, he was acknowledged king throughout all the land, among all the people of the Lamanites, who were composed of the Lamanites and the Lemuelites and the Ishmaelites, and all the dissenters of the Nephites, from the reign of Nephi down to the present time.
앨 47:36 이제 이 이반자들은, 니파이인들의 동일한 가르침과 동일한 견문을 가졌고, 참으로 동일한 주에 대한 지식으로 가르침을 받았거늘, 그럼에도 불구하고 이상하게도 그들이 갈라져 나간 후 오래지 아니하여, 레이맨인들보다 더 완악하고 회개할 줄 모르며, 더 거칠고, 간악하며 흉포하게 되어 - 레이맨인들의 전통을 답습하고, 나태와, 온갖 음란에 빠지며, 참으로 주 그들의 하나님을 완전히 잊었느니라. Now these dissenters, having the same instruction and the same information of the Nephites, yea, having been instructed in the same knowledge of the Lord, nevertheless, it is strange to relate, not long after their dissensions they became more hardened and impenitent, and more wild, wicked and ferocious than the Lamanites—drinking in with the traditions of the Lamanites; giving way to indolence, and all manner of lasciviousness; yea, entirely forgetting the Lord their God.
