| 야곱 7:1 | 그리고 이제 이렇게 되었나니 수년이 지난 후, 이름이 시렘이라 하는 사람이 니파이 백성 가운데 오니라. | And now it came to pass after some years had passed away, there came a man among the people of Nephi, whose name was Sherem. |
| 야곱 7:2 | 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 그가 백성 가운데 전파하며, 그리스도는 없을 것이라 선포하기 시작하였고, 또 백성들에게 아첨이 되는 것을 많이 전파하니, 그가 이렇게 행한 것은 그리스도의 교리를 무너뜨리고자 함이었더라. | And it came to pass that he began to preach among the people, and to declare unto them that there should be no Christ. And he preached many things which were flattering unto the people; and this he did that he might overthrow the doctrine of Christ. |
| 야곱 7:3 | 또 그가 백성들의 마음을 이끌어 내고자 부지런히 일하더니, 결국 많은 이들의 마음을 이끌어 내었고, 또 나 야곱이 장차 오실 그리스도를 믿는 신앙을 갖고 있음을 알고, 내게로 오고자 많은 기회를 찾았더라. | And he labored diligently that he might lead away the hearts of the people, insomuch that he did lead away many hearts; and he knowing that I, Jacob, had faith in Christ who should come, he sought much opportunity that he might come unto me. |
| 야곱 7:4 | 또 그는 유식하여 백성들의 언어를 완전히 알았고, 그리하여 악마의 능력을 좇아 많은 아첨과 많은 언변의 능력을 구사할 수 있었던지라. | And he was learned, that he had a perfect knowledge of the language of the people; wherefore, he could use much flattery, and much power of speech, according to the power of the devil. |
| 야곱 7:5 | 이러한 일에 관하여 내가 본 많은 것들과 많은 계시에도 불구하고, 그는 나를 흔들어 신앙에서 떨어지게 하려는 소망을 가졌었나니, 이는 내가 진실로 천사들을 보았고, 그들은 나에게 성역을 베풀었음이라. 그러나 또한 나는 시시로 다름 아닌 말씀으로 내게 고하시는 주의 음성을 들었었나니, 그런고로 내가 흔들릴 수 없었느니라. | And he had hope to shake me from the faith, notwithstanding the many revelations and the many things which I had seen concerning these things; for I truly had seen angels, and they had ministered unto me. And also, I had heard the voice of the Lord speaking unto me in very word, from time to time; wherefore, I could not be shaken. |
| 야곱 7:6 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그가 내게 와서, 이와 같이 나에게 말하여 이르되, 형제 야곱이여, 내가 당신에게 말하고자 기회를 많이 찾았노니, 이는 내가 들었고 또한 알고 있거니와 당신이 많이 다니며, 당신이 칭하기를 복음 곧 그리스도의 교리라 하는 것을 전파함이라. | And it came to pass that he came unto me, and on this wise did he speak unto me, saying: Brother Jacob, I have sought much opportunity that I might speak unto you; for I have heard and also know that thou goest about much, preaching that which ye call the gospel, or the doctrine of Christ. |
| 야곱 7:7 | 또 당신은 이 백성을 많이 이끌어 내어 그들로 하나님의 바른 길을 굽게 하고, 바른 길인 모세의 율법을 지키지 않게 하고, 모세의 율법을 바꾸어 당신이 말하기를 지금으로부터 수백 년 후에 오리라 하는 자를 경배하게 하였으니, 이제 보라, 나 시렘은 이것이 하나님을 모독하는 일임을, 당신에게 선언하노라, 이는 아무도 그러한 것들을 알지 못함이니, 사람이 장차 올 일을 말할 수 없음이니라 하였나니, 이러한 모양으로 시렘이 참으로 나를 대적하였느니라. | And ye have led away much of this people that they pervert the right way of God, and keep not the law of Moses which is the right way; and convert the law of Moses into the worship of a being which ye say shall come many hundred years hence. And now behold, I, Sherem, declare unto you that this is blasphemy; for no man knoweth of such things; for he cannot tell of things to come. And after this manner did Sherem contend against me. |
| 야곱 7:8 | 그러나 보라, 주 하나님께서 당신의 영을 나의 영혼에 부어 넣으시매, 내가 그의 모든 말에 그로 부끄러움을 당하게 하였느니라. | But behold, the Lord God poured in his Spirit into my soul, insomuch that I did confound him in all his words. |
| 야곱 7:9 | 또 내가 그에게 이르되, 너는 장차 오실 그리스도를 부인하느냐 하매, 그가 이르되, 만일 그리스도가 있다면 내가 그를 부인하지 아니할 것이나, 나는 그리스도가 있지 아니하며, 과거에도 있지 아니하였고, 장차도 있지 아니할 것을 아노라 하는지라. | And I said unto him: Deniest thou the Christ who shall come? And he said: If there should be a Christ, I would not deny him; but I know that there is no Christ, neither has been, nor ever will be. |
| 야곱 7:10 | 또 내가 그에게 이르되 너는 경전을 믿느냐 하매, 그가 이르되, 그러하다 하는지라. | And I said unto him: Believest thou the scriptures? And he said, Yea. |
| 야곱 7:11 | 또 내가 그에게 이르되, 그러면 네가 경전을 깨닫지 못하는도다. 경전은 진실로 그리스도를 증거함이라. 보라 내가 네게 이르거니와 이 그리스도에 관하여 말함이 없이, 기록하거나 예언을 한 선지자가 없느니라. | And I said unto him: Then ye do not understand them; for they truly testify of Christ. Behold, I say unto you that none of the prophets have written, nor prophesied, save they have spoken concerning this Christ. |
| 야곱 7:12 | 또 이것이 모두가 아니라 - 그 일은 나에게 분명히 밝혀졌었나니, 이는 내가 듣고 보았음이며, 그 일은 또한 성신의 권능으로 나에게 분명히 밝혀졌었나니, 그런즉, 내가 알거니와 만일 속죄가 이루어짐이 없다면 모든 인류는 반드시 잃어 버린 바 되리라 하였느니라. | And this is not all-it has been made manifest unto me, for I have heard and seen; and it also has been made manifest unto me by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, I know if there should be no atonement made all mankind must be lost. |
| 야곱 7:13 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그가 나에게 이르되, 네가 그처럼 많이 알고 있는 바, 이 성신의 권능으로 내게 표적을 보이라 하더라. | And it came to pass that he said unto me: Show me a sign by this power of the Holy Ghost, in the which ye know so much. |
| 야곱 7:14 | 이에 내가 그에게 이르되, 내가 누구관대 하나님을 시험하여 네가 참된 것으로 알고 있는 일에 네게 표적을 보이시게 하겠느냐? 이제도 네가 이를 부인할 것은, 네가 악마에게 속한 연고니라. 그럼에도 나의 뜻대로 되지 말기를 원하노라. 그러나 만일 하나님이 너를 치실진대 그것이 네게 하나님이 하늘에서나 땅에서나 권능을 가지셨고, 또한 그리스도께서 장차 오시리라는 표적이 될지어다. 그리고 주여, 나의 뜻이 아니옵고 주의 뜻이 이루어지기를 원하나이다. | And I said unto him: What am I that I should tempt God to show unto thee a sign in the thing which thou knowest to be true? Yet thou wilt deny it, because thou art of the devil. Nevertheless, not my will be done; but if God shall smite thee, let that be a sign unto thee that he has power, both in heaven and in earth; and also, that Christ shall come. And thy will, O Lord, be done, and not mine. |
| 야곱 7:15 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 나 야곱이 이 말을 하고 나자, 주의 권능이 그에게 임하매 그가 땅에 엎드러지더라. 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 그가 여러 날 동안 요양을 받더라. | And it came to pass that when I, Jacob, had spoken these words, the power of the Lord came upon him, insomuch that he fell to the earth. And it came to pass that he was nourished for the space of many days. |
| 야곱 7:16 | 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 그가 백성들에게 이르되, 내일 함께 모이라. 이는 내가 죽을 것임이라. 그런즉 내가 죽기 전에 백성들에게 말하기를 원하노라 하는지라. | And it came to pass that he said unto the people: Gather together on the morrow, for I shall die; wherefore, I desire to speak unto the people before I shall die. |
| 야곱 7:17 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 다음 날 무리가 함께 모이매, 그가 그들에게 명백히 말하여 그가 그들에게 가르친 바를 부인하고, 그리스도와 성신의 권능과 천사들의 성역을 시인하였더라. | And it came to pass that on the morrow the multitude were gathered together; and he spake plainly unto them and denied the things which he had taught them, and confessed the Christ, and the power of the Holy Ghost, and the ministering of angels. |
| 야곱 7:18 | 또 그가 악마의 능력에 속았음을 그들에게 명백히 말하니라. 또 그가 지옥과 영원과 영원한 형벌에 대하여 말하였더라. | And he spake plainly unto them, that he had been deceived by the power of the devil. And he spake of hell, and of eternity, and of eternal punishment. |
| 야곱 7:19 | 또 이르되, 내가 하나님께 거짓말을 하였으니, 내가 혹 사함 받지 못할 죄를 범한 것이 아닌가 두렵도다. 이는 내가 그리스도를 부인하며, 말하기를 내가 경전을 믿는다 하였음이라. 그러나 경전은 진실로 그를 증거하느니라. 내가 이같이 하나님께 거짓말하였으므로 내 처지가 참혹하게 될까 심히 두려우나, 내가 하나님께 고백하노라. | And he said: I fear lest I have committed the unpardonable sin, for I have lied unto God; for I denied the Christ, and said that I believed the scriptures; and they truly testify of him. And because I have thus lied unto God I greatly fear lest my case shall be awful; but I confess unto God. |
| 야곱 7:20 | 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 그가 이 말을 하고 나서, 더 말하지 못하고 혼이 떠나더라. | And it came to pass that when he had said these words he could say no more, and he gave up the ghost. |
| 야곱 7:21 | 또 그가 혼이 떠나려 할 때 이렇게 말하는 것을 무리가 목격하고 심히 놀라더니, 하나님의 권능이 그들에게 내려 임하매, 그들이 압도되어 땅에 엎드러지더라. | And when the multitude had witnessed that he spake these things as he was about to give up the ghost, they were astonished exceedingly; insomuch that the power of God came down upon them, and they were overcome that they fell to the earth. |
| 야곱 7:22 | 이제 이는 나 야곱을 기쁘게 하는 일이었나니, 이는 내가 그것을 하늘에 계신 내 아버지께 구하였음이요, 아버지께서 나의 부르짖음을 들으시고 내 기도에 응답해 주셨음이라. | Now, this thing was pleasing unto me, Jacob, for I had requested it of my Father who was in heaven; for he had heard my cry and answered my prayer. |
| 야곱 7:23 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 백성들 가운데 화평과 하나님의 사랑이 다시 회복되어 그들이 경전을 상고하며, 이 간악한 자의 말에 더 이상 귀를 기울이지 아니하였느니라. | And it came to pass that peace and the love of God was restored again among the people; and they searched the scriptures, and hearkened no more to the words of this wicked man. |
| 야곱 7:24 | 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 레이맨인들을 돌이켜 진리의 지식에로 회복하고자 여러 방안이 강구되었으나, 그 모두가 헛되었나니, 이는 그들이 전쟁과 유혈을 즐기며, 그들의 형제 우리를 대하여 영원한 증오를 가졌음이라. 또 그들은 끊임없이 그들의 무장의 힘으로 우리를 멸하기를 구하였느니라. | And it came to pass that many means were devised to reclaim and restore the Lamanites to the knowledge of the truth; but it all was vain, for they delighted in wars and bloodshed, and they had an eternal hatred against us, their brethren. And they sought by the power of their arms to destroy us continually. |
| 야곱 7:25 | 그리하여 니파이 백성은 자기들의구원의 반석이신 하나님을 의뢰하며, 자기들의 무장과 자기들의 온 힘을 다하여 그들에게 대하여 방비하였나니, 이러므로 그들이 아직은 그들의 대적을 이기는 자가 되니라. | Wherefore, the people of Nephi did fortify against them with their arms, and with all their might, trusting in the God and rock of their salvation; wherefore, they became as yet, conquerors of their enemies. |
| 야곱 7:26 | 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 나 야곱은 늙게 되었고, 이 백성의 기록은 니파이의 다른 판에 기록되고 있나니, 그런즉 나는 이 기록을 끝맺으면서, 최대한 내가 아는 바를 좇아 기록하였음을 선포하노라. 또 말하노니 세월이 우리와 더불어 지나가고, 우리의 인생도 우리에게는 마치 한 조각 꿈처럼 지나갔으나, 우리는 외롭고 엄숙한 백성이요, 방황하는 자로서 예루살렘에서 쫓겨났으며, 환난중에 광야에서 태어나 우리의 형제들에게 미움을 받았나니, 미움이 전쟁과 다툼을 일으켰도다. 그리하여 우리는 우리의 날들을 슬퍼하며 보내었느니라. | And it came to pass that I, Jacob, began to be old; and the record of this people being kept on the other plates of Nephi, wherefore, I conclude this record, declaring that I have written according to the best of my knowledge, by saying that the time passed away with us, and also our lives passed away like as it were unto us a dream, we being a lonesome and a solemn people, wanderers, cast out from Jerusalem, born in tribulation, in a wilderness, and hated of our brethren, which caused wars and contentions; wherefore, we did mourn out our days. |
| 야곱 7:27 | 그리고 나 야곱은 내가 반드시 곧 나의 무덤으로 내려갈 것임을 알아, 나의 아들 이노스에게 이르기를, 이 판을 맡으라 하고, 또 나의 형 니파이가 나에게 명한 것을 그에게 말하였더니, 그가 명에 복종할 것을 약속하였느니라. 이제 나는 이 판에 나의 기록함을 마치노니, 그 기록한 것이 작았을지라도 많은 나의 형제들이 내 말을 읽기를 바라며, 읽는 자에게 작별을 고하노라. 형제들아 잘 있으라. | And I, Jacob, saw that I must soon go down to my grave; wherefore, I said unto my son Enos: Take these plates. And I told him the things which my brother Nephi had commanded me, and he promised obedience unto the commands. And I make an end of my writing upon these plates, which writing has been small; and to the reader I bid farewell, hoping that many of my brethren may read my words. Brethren, adieu. |
