하나님들께서 땅과 거기에 있는 모든 생명의 창조를 계획하심 - 창조의 엿새 동안의 계획이 설명됨. |
The Gods plan the creation of the earth and all life thereon—Their plans for the six days of creation are set forth. |
주) 경전에는 창조에 대해 세 가지 기사가 실려 있는데, 창세기 1~2, 모세서 2~3장, 아브라함서 4~5장 등에 나와 있다. 기사마다 부분적인 이야기가 전개되는데, 전개 방식은 기사마다 약간씩 다르다. ( “창조 기사의 일치점”, 참조)

그러고 나서 주께서 이르시되, 우리가 내려가자 하시고, 태초에 그들이 내려가시니라. 그리고 그들 곧 하나님들께서 하늘들과 이 땅을 조직하며 지으시더라. |
AND then the Lord said: Let us go down. And they went down at the beginning, and they, that is the Gods, organized and formed the heavens and the earth.

 주) “그들 곧 하나님들” : 또한 모세서 1장 31~33절과 2장 1절을 참조한다. 브르스 알 맥콩키 장로는 이렇게 설명했다. “이 말씀의 궁극적이고 최종적인 의미에서 본다면, 하나님 아버지는 만물의 창조주이시다. 그분이 아들과 다른 여러 하나님들에게 창조 권세를 위임하여 수많은 창조 활동을수행하게 하셨다고 해서 이러한 여러 하나님들이 그분과는 독립적으로 그들 뜻대로 했다는 것을 의미하지는 않습니다. 그분에게서 모든 창조의 권능이 나왔으며 그분은 다만 다른 여러 하나님을 택하여 그분을 대신하여 수많은 창조 사업을 수행하게 하셨던 것입니다.” (브르스 알 맥콩키, A New Witness for the Articles of Faith, 63쪽)
주) 땅은 이미 존재하는 물질로 조직되었다 : "전통적인 기독교에서는 하나님께서“무”에서 만물을 창조하셨다고 믿고 있다. 선지자 조셉 스미스는 “비물질적 물질 같은 것은 존재하지 아니하느니라”고 가르쳤고 (교리와 성약 131:7), 주님께서는 “원소는 영원하다”고 말씀하셨다. (교리와 성약 93:33) 창조에 대한 창세기의 기사에 나오는 “창조하다”라는 말은 “조직하다”라는 의미를 가진 히브리어에 어원을 두고 있다. And the earth, after it was formed, was empty and desolate, because they had not formed anything but the earth; and darkness reigned upon the face of the deep, and the Spirit of the Gods was brooding upon the face of the waters. |
주) “모양이 만들어진 뒤의 땅은 공허하며 황량하였으니” : 선지자 조셉 스미스는 창세기 1장 2절과 모세서 2장 2절에서 볼 수 있는 “혼돈하고 공허“하다라는 번역은 아브라함서 4장 2절에서 번역된 바와 같이 “공허하며 황량”하다로 되어야 마땅하다고 했다. (선지자 조셉 스미스의 가르침, 170쪽 참조)
주) “하나님들의 영은 수면을 조용히 덮고 계시더라” : “덮고 계시더라”는 말은 암탉이 알과 병아리를 품는 것을 말하며, 그 의미는 그들을 보호하고 따스하게 하며 양육하며 지킨다는 것을 의미한다. 예수님은 암탉이 병아리를 품어 거둔다는 비유를 들어 그분을 따르는 사람들에게 행하실 일을 알려 주셨다. (마태복음 23:37; 제3니파이 10:3~6 참조) 이런 점에서 영은 여전히 하나님께서 창조하신 것들을 조용히 덮고 있다. (값진진주 학생교재, 종교 327, 40-41쪽)

And they (the Gods) said: Let there be light; and there was light. |

And the Gods called the light Day, and the darkness they called Night. And it came to pass that from the evening until morning they called night; and from the morning until the evening they called day; and this was the first, or the beginning, of that which they called day and night. |
주) 밤과 낮 : "창조에 대한 아브라함의 기사와 기타 경전의 기사 사이의 재미 있는 차이점 중 한 가지는 아브라함서 4장 5절에 기록된 밤과 낮에 대한 개념이다. “저녁부터 아침까지를 밤이라 일컬으시고 아침부터 저녁까지를 낮이라 일컬으시니”(8절, 13절, 19절, 23절, 31절 참조) 다른 창조의 기사에서는 매 창조 기간을 하루로 언급하고 있을 뿐이다. 아브라함 4장에서 말한 창조 기간은 날이 아니라 “째(기간)”라고 칭하고 있음을 덧붙여 설명하고 있다. And the Gods pronounced the dry land, Earth; and the gathering together of the waters, pronounced they, Great Waters; and the Gods saw that they were obeyed. |

And the Gods said: Let us prepare the earth to bring forth grass; the herb yielding seed; the fruit tree yielding fruit, after his kind, whose seed in itself yieldeth its own likeness upon the earth; and it was so, even as they ordered. |

And the Gods organized the earth to bring forth grass from its own seed, and the herb to bring forth herb from its own seed, yielding seed after his kind; and the earth to bring forth the tree from its own seed, yielding fruit, whose seed could only bring forth the same in itself, after his kind; and the Gods saw that they were obeyed. |
주) “그 종류대로” : "아브라함서는 모세서와 비교해 볼 때 만물은 그 종류에 따라 오직 같은 종류의 것을 낼 수 있을 뿐이라는 개념을 한층 강하게 강조하는 것 같다. 브르스 알 맥콩키 장로는 창조에 대해 이렇게 가르쳤다. “한 종류로부터 다른 종류로 진화하거나 변화할 수 있는 규정은 없었습니다.”( “그리스도와 창조,”성도의 벗, 1983년 9월호, 28쪽)

And organized them to be for lights in the expanse of the heaven to give light upon the earth; and it was so. |

또 하나님들께서 두 큰 광명체를 조직하시고 큰 광명체로 낮을 주관하게 하시고 작은 광명체로 밤을 주관하게 하시며, 또 작은 광명체와 더불어 그들이 별들도 있게 하시니라. |
And the Gods organized the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; with the lesser light they set the stars also; |

그리고 하나님들께서 하늘의 창공에 그것들을 두사 땅을 비추게 하시고 낮과 밤을 주관하게 하시고 빛과 어둠을 나누게 하시니라. |
And the Gods set them in the expanse of the heavens, to give light upon the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to cause to divide the light from the darkness. |

그리고 하나님들께서 그 명하신 것들이 순종하기까지 그것들을 지켜보시니라. |
And the Gods watched those things which they had ordered until they obeyed. |

And it came to pass that it was from evening until morning that it was night; and it came to pass that it was from morning until evening that it was day; and it was the fourth time. |

And the Gods said: Let us prepare the waters to bring forth abundantly the moving creatures that have life; and the fowl, that they may fly above the earth in the open expanse of heaven. |

And the Gods prepared the waters that they might bring forth great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters were to bring forth abundantly after their kind; and every winged fowl after their kind. And the Gods saw that they would be obeyed, and that their plan was good. |

And the Gods said: We will bless them, and cause them to be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas or great waters; and cause the fowl to multiply in the earth. |

And the Gods prepared the earth to bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle and creeping things, and beasts of the earth after their kind; and it was so, as they had said. |

그리고 하나님들께서 땅을 조직하사 짐승을 그 종류대로, 육축을 그 종류대로, 땅 위를 기어다니는 모든 것을 그 종류대로 내게 하시니, 하나님들께서 보신즉 그것들이 순종하고자 하더라. |
And the Gods organized the earth to bring forth the beasts after their kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after its kind; and the Gods saw they would obey. |

그리고 하나님들께서 서로 의논하사 이르시되, 우리가 내려가서 우리의 형상대로 우리의 모양을 따라 사람을 만들자. 그리고 우리는 그들에게 바다의 고기와 공중의 새와 육축과 온 땅과 땅 위를 기는 모든 기어다니는 것들을 다스리게 하리라. |
And the Gods took counsel among themselves and said: Let us go down and form man in our image, after our likeness; and we will give them dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. |

그리하여 하나님들께서 내려가 자기들의 형상대로 사람을 조직하시되, 하나님들의 형상대로 그들이 그를 지으시고, 그들을 남자와 여자로 지으시니라. |
So the Gods went down to organize man in their own image, in the image of the Gods to form they him, male and female to form they them. |

And the Gods said: We will bless them. And the Gods said: We will cause them to be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it, and to have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. |

And the Gods said: Behold, we will give them every herb bearing seed that shall come upon the face of all the earth, and every tree which shall have fruit upon it; yea, the fruit of the tree yielding seed to them we will give it; it shall be for their meat. |

And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, behold, we will give them life, and also we will give to them every green herb for meat, and all these things shall be thus organized. |

And the Gods said: We will do everything that we have said, and organize them; and behold, they shall be very obedient. And it came to pass that it was from evening until morning they called night; and it came to pass that it was from morning until evening that they called day; and they numbered the sixth time. |
