소개 한 사람이면 패하겠거니와 두 사람이면 능히 당하나니 삼겹 줄은 쉽게 끊어지지 아니하느니라 Oppression and evil work are vanity—The strength of two is better than one—Better is a poor and wise child than an old and foolish king.

 
전 4:1 내가 다시 해 아래에서 행하는 모든 학대를 살펴 보았도다 보라 학대 받는 자들의 눈물이로다 그들에게 위로자가 없도다 그들을 학대하는 자들의 손에는 권세가 있으나 그들에게는 위로자가 없도다 So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.

 
전 4:2 그러므로 나는 아직 살아 있는 산 자들보다 죽은 지 오랜 죽은 자들을 더 복되다 하였으며 Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.

 
전 4:3 이 둘보다도 아직 출생하지 아니하여 해 아래에서 행하는 악한 일을 보지 못한 자가 더 복되다 하였노라 Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

 
전 4:4 내가 또 본즉 사람이 모든 수고와 모든 재주로 말미암아 이웃에게 시기를 받으니 이것도 헛되어 바람을 잡는 것이로다 Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

 
전 4:5 우매자는 팔짱을 끼고 있으면서 자기의 몸만 축내는도다 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

 
전 4:6 두 손에 가득하고 수고하며 바람을 잡는 것보다 한 손에만 가득하고 평온함이 더 나으니라 Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.

 
전 4:7 내가 또 다시 해 아래에서 헛된 것을 보았도다 Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.

 
전 4:8 어떤 사람은 아들도 없고 형제도 없이 홀로 있으나 그의 모든 수고에는 끝이 없도다 또 비록 그의 눈은 부요를 족하게 여기지 아니하면서 이르기를 내가 누구를 위하여는 이같이 수고하고 나를 위하여는 행복을 누리지 못하게 하는가 하여도 이것도 헛되어 불행한 노고로다 There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.

 
전 4:9 두 사람이 한 사람보다 나음은 그들이 수고함으로 좋은 상을 얻을 것임이라 Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.

 
전 4:10 혹시 그들이 넘어지면 하나가 그 동무를 붙들어 일으키려니와 홀로 있어 넘어지고 붙들어 일으킬 자가 없는 자에게는 화가 있으리라 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.

 
전 4:11 또 두 사람이 함께 누우면 따뜻하거니와 한 사람이면 어찌 따뜻하랴 Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?

 
전 4:12 한 사람이면 패하겠거니와 두 사람이면 맞설 수 있나니 세 겹 줄은 쉽게 끊어지지 아니하느니라 And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

 
전 4:13 가난하여도 지혜로운 젊은이가 늙고 둔하여 경고를 더 받을 줄 모르는 왕보다 나으니 Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.

 
전 4:14 그는 자기의 나라에서 가난하게 태어났을지라도 감옥에서 나와 왕이 되었음이니라 For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.

 
전 4:15 내가 본즉 해 아래에서 다니는 인생들이 왕의 다음 자리에 있다가 왕을 대신하여 일어난 젊은이와 함께 있고 I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.

 
전 4:16 그의 치리를 받는 모든 백성들이 무수하였을지라도 후에 오는 자들은 그를 기뻐하지 아니하리니 이것도 헛되어 바람을 잡는 것이로다 There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
