| 니전 16:1 | 그리고 이제 이렇게 되었나니 나 니파이가 나의 형들에게 말하기를 마치고 나자, 보라 그들이 내게 이르기를, 너는 우리가 감당할 수 있는 이상으로 심한 것들을 우리에게 선포하였도다 하더라. | And now it came to pass that after I, Nephi, had made an end of speaking to my brethren, behold they said unto me: Thou hast declared unto us hard things, more than we are able to bear. |
| 니전 16:2 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 내가 그들에게 이르기를, 내가 진리를 좇아 악인에게 심한 것을 말한 줄 아나이다. 또 의인을 내가 의롭다 하고 그들이 마지막 날에 들리우리라고 증거하였나이다. 그런즉 죄인은 진리를 심하다고 여기나니, 이는 진리가 그들의 바로 그 중심까지 베기 때문이니이다. | And it came to pass that I said unto them that I knew that I had spoken hard things against the wicked, according to the truth; and the righteous have I justified, and testified that they should be lifted up at the last day; wherefore, the guilty taketh the truth to be hard, for it cutteth them to the very center. |
| 니전 16:3 | 또 이제 나의 형들이여, 만일 당신들이 의롭고 기꺼이 진리에 귀를 기울이려 하며, 그에 유의하여 하나님 앞에 올바로 행하려 하였더라면, 당신들은 진리로 인하여 불평하여 네가 우리에게 심한 것을 말하는도다 라고 하지 아니하리이다. | And now my brethren, if ye were righteous and were willing to hearken to the truth, and give heed unto it, that ye might walk uprightly before God, then ye would not murmur because of the truth, and say: Thou speakest hard things against us. |
| 니전 16:4 | 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 나 니파이는 부지런함을 다하여, 나의 형들에게 주의 계명을 지키도록 권면하였느니라. | And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did exhort my brethren, with all diligence, to keep the commandments of the Lord. |

| 니전 16:8 | 이리하여 나의 부친은 그에게 주어진 주의 모든 명령을 다 이루었고, 또한 나 니파이도 주께 심히 많은 복을 받았느니라. | And thus my father had fulfilled all the commandments of the Lord which had been given unto him. And also, I, Nephi, had been blessed of the Lord exceedingly. |
| 니전 16:9 | 또 이렇게 되었나니 주의 음성이 밤에 나의 부친에게 말씀하여, 다음 날 광야로 여행을 떠나라 명하시니라. | And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord spake unto my father by night, and commanded him that on the morrow he should take his journey into the wilderness. |
| 니전 16:10 | 또 이렇게 되었나니 나의 부친이 아침에 일어나 장막 문으로 나아갔을 때, 놀랍게도 땅 위에 정교한 솜씨로 만들어진 한 둥근 공이 있음을 보셨나니, 그것은 순 놋으로 된 것이더라. 또 공 안에는 지침 두 개가 있었으며, 그 하나가 우리가 광야로 들어가야 할 길을 가리키더라. | And it came to pass that as my father arose in the morning, and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment he beheld upon the ground a round ball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. And within the ball were two spindles; and the one pointed the way whither we should go into the wilderness. |
| 니전 16:11 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 우리는 광야로 가지고 들어 갈 것은 무엇이든지 한데 모았고, 주께서 우리에게 주신 양식도 남은 것을 모두 모았으며, 또 광야로 가지고 들어 갈 온갖 종류의 씨앗을 취하였느니라. | And it came to pass that we did gather together whatsoever things we should carry into the wilderness, and all the remainder of our provisions which the Lord had given unto us; and we did take seed of every kind that we might carry into the wilderness. |
| 니전 16:12 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 우리는 우리의 장막을 취하고 떠나 레이맨 강을 건너 광야로 들어갔느니라. | And it came to pass that we did take our tents and depart into the wilderness, across the river Laman. |
| 니전 16:13 | 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 우리는 거의 남남동 방향으로 나흘 동안을 여행하고 다시 장막을 쳤으며, 그 곳 이름을 세이저라 하였느니라. | And it came to pass that we traveled for the space of four days, nearly a south-southeast direction, and we did pitch our tents again; and we did call the name of the place Shazer. |
| 니전 16:14 | 또 이렇게 되었나니 우리는 우리의 활과 우리의 화살을 가지고 우리의 가족들을 위하여 양식을 잡으러 나아가 광야로 들어갔으며, 우리 가족들을 위해 양식을 잡은 후에 광야에 있는 우리 가족들에게로 세이저라 한 곳으로 다시 돌아왔느니라. 그리고 우리는 다시 같은 방향을 따라, 홍해에 가까운 변경에 있는 광야의 가장 비옥한 지역을 따라 광야를 나아갔느니라. | And it came to pass that we did take our bows and our arrows, and go forth into the wilderness to slay food for our families; and after we had slain food for our families we did return again to our families in the wilderness, to the place of Shazer. And we did go forth again in the wilderness, following the same direction, keeping in the most fertile parts of the wilderness, which were in the borders near the Red Sea. |

| 니전 16:18 | 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 나 니파이가 양식을 잡으러 나아갔다가, 보라, 나는 좋은 강철로 만들어진 나의 활을 부러뜨렸느니라. 내가 내 활을 부러뜨리고 난 후, 보라, 내 활을 잃었음으로 인하여 나의 형들이 내게 성을 내었나니 이는 우리가 아무 양식도 얻지 못하였음이라. | And it came to pass that as I, Nephi, went forth to slay food, behold, I did break my bow, which was made of fine steel; and after I did break my bow, behold, my brethren were angry with me because of the loss of my bow, for we did obtain no food. |

| 니전 16:20 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 광야에서 겪는 그들의 고통과 고난으로 인하여 레이맨과 레뮤엘과 이스마엘의 아들들이 몹시 불평하기 시작하였고, 또한 나의 부친도 주 그의 하나님께 대하여 불평을 하기 시작하였나니, 참으로 그들이 모두 심히 슬펐던지라, 결국은 그들이 주께 대하여 불평을 하였느니라. | And it came to pass that Laman and Lemuel and the sons of Ishmael did begin to murmur exceedingly, because of their sufferings and afflictions in the wilderness; and also my father began to murmur against the Lord his God; yea, and they were all exceedingly sorrowful, even that they did murmur against the Lord. |
| 니전 16:21 | 이제 이렇게 되었나니 나 니파이는 나의 활을 잃었음으로 인하여 나의 형들로부터 고난을 당하였고, 그들의 활은 그 탄력을 잃은지라, 일이 심히 어렵게 되었으니, 참으로 우리는 아무 양식도 얻을 수 없었느니라. | Now it came to pass that I, Nephi, having been afflicted with my brethren because of the loss of my bow, and their bows having lost their springs, it began to be exceedingly difficult, yea, insomuch that we could obtain no food. |
| 니전 16:22 | 또 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 다시 그 마음을 완악하게 하여, 주 그들의 하나님을 거스려 불평을 토하는 고로, 나 니파이는 나의 형들에게 많은 말을 하였느니라. | And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did speak much unto my brethren, because they had hardened their hearts again, even unto complaining against the Lord their God. |
| 니전 16:23 | 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 나 니파이는 나무로 활을, 곧은 막대로 화살을 만들고 그리하여 활과 화살로 물매로 또 돌로 무장하고 그리고 나의 부친께 말씀드리기를, 양식을 얻기 위해 내가 어디로 가리이까 하였느니라. | And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did make out of wood a bow, and out of a straight stick, an arrow; wherefore, I did arm myself with a bow and an arrow, with a sling and with stones. And I said unto my father: Whither shall I go to obtain food? |
| 니전 16:24 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그가 주께 물으셨으니, 이는 나의 말로 인하여 그들이 스스로 겸손하여졌기 때문이요, 이는 내가 내 영혼의 힘을 기울여 그들에게 많은 것을 말해 주었기 때문이었더라. | And it came to pass that he did inquire of the Lord, for they had humbled themselves because of my words; for I did say many things unto them in the energy of my soul. |
| 니전 16:25 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 주의 음성이 나의 부친에게 임하였고, 그는 주께 불평한 일로 인해 진실로 질책을 받았나니, 그로 인해 그는 깊은 슬픔에 잠기더라. | And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came unto my father; and he was truly chastened because of his murmuring against the Lord, insomuch that he was brought down into the depths of sorrow. |
| 니전 16:26 | 또 이렇게 되었나니 주의 음성이 그에게 이르시되, 공 위를 살펴 적혀 있는 것을 보라 하시더라. | And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord said unto him: Look upon the ball, and behold the things which are written. |
| 니전 16:27 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 나의 부친이 공 위에 적혀 있는 것을 보셨을 때, 그는 심히 두려워하며 떠시었으며, 나의 형들과 이스마엘의 아들들과 우리의 아내들도 그러하였느니라. | And it came to pass that when my father beheld the things which were written upon the ball, he did fear and tremble exceedingly, and also my brethren and the sons of Ishmael and our wives. |
| 니전 16:28 | 또 이렇게 되었나니 나 니파이가 공 안에 있는 지침들을 보았더니, 그 지침들은 우리가 거기에 쏟는 신앙과 부지런함과 주의에 따라 작동하더라. | And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the pointers which were in the ball, that they did work according to the faith and diligence and heed which we did give unto them. |
| 니전 16:29 | 또한 그 위에는 읽기에 명백한 새로운 글이 쓰여 있었나니, 주의 길에 관하여 우리로 하여금 이해하게 하는 것이었으며, 또 그것은 우리가 그것에 쏟는 신앙과 부지런함에 따라 씌어지며 시시로 바뀌더라. 이리하여 우리는 주께서 작은 수단으로 큰 일을 이루실 수 있으심을 알게 되느니라. | And there was also written upon them a new writing, which was plain to be read, which did give us understanding concerning the ways of the Lord; and it was written and changed from time to time, according to the faith and diligence which we gave unto it. And thus we see that by small means the Lord can bring about great things. |
| 니전 16:30 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 나 니파이는 공 위에 주신 지시에 따라 나아가 산꼭대기로 올라갔느니라. | And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did go forth up into the top of the mountain, according to the directions which were given upon the ball. |
| 니전 16:31 | 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 나는 들짐승들을 잡아, 그로써 우리 가족들을 위한 양식을 얻었느니라. | And it came to pass that I did slay wild beasts, insomuch that I did obtain food for our families. |
| 니전 16:32 | 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 내가 잡은 짐승을 가지고 우리의 장막으로 돌아오매, 이제 내가 양식을 얻은 것을 보았을 때, 그들의 기쁨은 얼마나 컸던지! 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 주 앞에 겸손하여져서 그에게 감사를 드리니라. | And it came to pass that I did return to our tents, bearing the beasts which I had slain; and now when they beheld that I had obtained food, how great was their joy! And it came to pass that they did humble themselves before the Lord, and did give thanks unto him. |
| 니전 16:33 | 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 우리는 다시 여행을 떠나 처음과 거의 같은 방향으로 여행하였으며, 여러 날 동안을 여행한 후 한동안 머무르고자 다시 장막을 쳤느니라. | And it came to pass that we did again take our journey, traveling nearly the same course as in the beginning; and after we had traveled for the space of many days we did pitch our tents again, that we might tarry for the space of a time. |
| 니전 16:34 | 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 이스마엘이 죽어 네이홈이라 하는 곳에 묻히니라. | And it came to pass that Ishmael died, and was buried in the place which was called Nahom. |
| 니전 16:35 | 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 이스마엘의 딸들이 그들의 아버지를 잃었음으로 인하여, 그리고 광야에서의 그들의 고난으로 인하여 심히 슬퍼하고, 이에 그들을 예루살렘 땅에서 데리고 나왔음으로 인하여 나의 부친에게 불평하여 이르되, 우리 아버지는 돌아가셨고 그뿐 아니라 우리는 광야에서 많이 방황하였으며, 우리는 많은 고난과 굶주림과 목마름과 피로함을 당하였나니, 이 모든 것을 당한 후에 우리가 필경은 광야에서 굶어 죽으리이다 하였느니라. | And it came to pass that the daughters of Ishmael did mourn exceedingly, because of the loss of their father, and because of their afflictions in the wilderness; and they did murmur against my father, because he had brought them out of the land of Jerusalem, saying: Our father is dead; yea, and we have wandered much in the wilderness, and we have suffered much affliction, hunger, thirst, and fatigue; and after all these sufferings we must perish in the wilderness with hunger. |
| 니전 16:36 | 이와 같이 그들이 나의 부친에게와 또한 나에게 불평하였고, 또 그들은 예루살렘으로 다시 돌아가기를 갈망하였느니라. | And thus they did murmur against my father, and also against me; and they were desirous to return again to Jerusalem. |
| 니전 16:37 | 이에 레이맨이 레뮤엘과 또한 이스마엘의 아들들에게 이르되, 보라, 우리 아버지와 또한 스스로 떠맡아 자기의 형들인 우리의 통치자와 우리의 교사가 된 우리 동생 니파이를 죽여버리자. | And Laman said unto Lemuel and also unto the sons of Ishmael: Behold, let us slay our father, and also our brother Nephi, who has taken it upon him to be our ruler and our teacher, who are his elder brethren. |
| 니전 16:38 | 이제 그가 말하기를 주께서 자기와 이야기 하셨다 하며, 또한 천사들이 자기에게 성역을 베풀어 주었다 하나, 보라, 우리는 그가 우리에게 거짓말한다는 것을 아노라. 그가 우리에게 이러한 것들을 이야기하고 그의 간교한 술수로 여러 일을 행하여 우리의 눈을 속이고자 함은, 아마도 우리를 어떤 낯선 광야로 이끌어 내고자 생각함이라. 또 그가 우리를 이끌어 낸 후에는 그 스스로 우리 위에 왕과 통치자가 되어 우리를 가지고 그의 뜻과 기뻐하는 바를 좇아 행하려고 생각하였도다 하였으니, 이같이 나의 형 레이맨은 그들의 마음을 충동하여 분노를 일으키게 하였느니라. | Now, he says that the Lord has talked with him, and also that angels have ministered unto him. But behold, we know that he lies unto us; and he tells us these things, and he worketh many things by his cunning arts, that he may deceive our eyes, thinking, perhaps, that he may lead us away into some strange wilderness; and after he has led us away, he has thought to make himself a king and a ruler over us, that he may do with us according to his will and pleasure. And after this manner did my brother Laman stir up their hearts to anger. |
| 니전 16:39 | 그러나 이렇게 되었나니 주께서 우리와 함께 하시고, 참으로 주의 음성이 그들에게 임하여, 많은 말씀을 하시며 그들을 심히 질책하시니, 이에 그들이 주의 음성으로 질책을 받은 후 그 분노를 돌이키고 자기들의 죄를 회개하였던지라. 주께서 다시 양식으로 우리를 축복하시매 우리가 죽지 아니하였느니라. | And it came to pass that the Lord was with us, yea, even the voice of the Lord came and did speak many words unto them, and did chasten them exceedingly; and after they were chastened by the voice of the Lord they did turn away their anger, and did repent of their sins, insomuch that the Lord did bless us again with food, that we did not perish. |
