| 니전 17:1 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 우리는 다시 광야에서 여행을 계속하였으며 그때부터는 거의 동쪽으로 여행하였느니라. 또 우리는 광야에서 많은 고난을 헤치며 여행해 나아갔으며 우리의 여자들은 광야에서 아이들을 낳았느니라. | And it came to pass that we did again take our journey in the wilderness; and we did travel nearly eastward from that time forth. And we did travel and wade through much affliction in the wilderness; and our women did bear children in the wilderness. |
| 니전 17:2 | 또 우리에게 임한 주의 복이 얼마나 컸던지, 우리가 광야에서 날고기를 먹고 사는 동안 우리의 여자들은 그 아이들에게 젖을 넉넉히 빨렸으며, 참으로 남자들처럼 강건하였고 그리하여 그들은 불평 없이 여행을 감당하기 시작하였느니라. | And so great were the blessings of the Lord upon us, that while we did live upon raw meat in the wilderness, our women did give plenty of suck for their children, and were strong, yea, even like unto the men; and they began to bear their journeyings without murmurings. |
| 니전 17:3 | 이리하여 우리는 하나님의 계명은 반드시 이루어질 것임을 알게 되나니, 만일 사람의 자녀들이 하나님의 계명을 지킬진대, 하나님께서는 그들을 양육하시며 그들을 강하게 하시고 그들이 그가 명하신 일을 성취할 수 있는 방편을 마련해 주시는도다. 그러한즉 우리가 광야에 머무는 동안 그는 우리를 위하여 방편을 마련해 주셨느니라. | And thus we see that the commandments of God must be fulfilled. And if it so be that the children of men keep the commandments of God he doth nourish them, and strengthen them, and provide means whereby they can accomplish the thing which he has commanded them; wherefore, he did provide means for us while we did sojourn in the wilderness. |

And we beheld the sea, which we called Irreantum, which, being interpreted, is many waters. |
| 니전 17:6 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 우리는 바닷가 곁에 우리의 장막을 쳤으며, 우리는 참으로 다 기록할 수 없을 만큼 많은 고난과 어려움을 겪었음에도 불구하고, 바닷가에 이르러 심히 기뻐하였고, 그 곳에 과실이 많았던지라, 우리는 그 곳을 풍요라 불렀느니라. | And it came to pass that we did pitch our tents by the seashore; and notwithstanding we had suffered many afflictions and much difficulty, yea, even so much that we cannot write them all, we were exceedingly rejoiced when we came to the seashore; and we called the place Bountiful, because of its much fruit. |
| 니전 17:7 | 또 이렇게 되었나니 나 니파이가 여러 날 동안을 풍요 땅에 있은 후에, 주의 음성이 나에게 임하여 이르시되, 일어나 산으로 가라 하시더라. 이에 이렇게 되었나니 내가 일어나 산으로 올라가서 주께 부르짖었더라. | And it came to pass that after I, Nephi, had been in the land of Bountiful for the space of many days, the voice of the Lord came unto me, saying: Arise, and get thee into the mountain. And it came to pass that I arose and went up into the mountain, and cried unto the Lord. |
| 니전 17:8 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 주께서 내게 일러 이르시되, 너는 내가 네 백성을 이 물 건너로 데려갈 수 있도록, 내가 네게 보여 줄 방식을 좇아 배를 건조할지니라 하시더라. | And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto me, saying: Thou shalt construct a ship, after the manner which I shall show thee, that I may carry thy people across these waters. |
| 니전 17:9 | 이에 내가 여쭈오되, 주여 어디로 가야 내가 녹일 광석을 찾아, 주께서 나에게 보여 주신 방식을 좇아 배를 건조하기 위한 연장을 만들 수 있겠나이까? | And I said: Lord, whither shall I go that I may find ore to molten, that I may make tools to construct the ship after the manner which thou hast shown unto me? |
| 니전 17:10 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 주께서 어디로 가야 내가 광석을 찾아 연장을 만들 수 있겠는지 내게 말씀해 주시더라. | And it came to pass that the Lord told me whither I should go to find ore, that I might make tools. |
| 니전 17:11 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 나 니파이는 짐승 가죽으로 불을 부칠 풀무를 만들었으며, 내가 가지고 불을 부치기 위해 풀무를 만든 다음, 나는 불을 만들기 위해 돌 두 개를 마주쳤느니라. | And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did make a bellows wherewith to blow the fire, of the skins of beasts; and after I had made a bellows, that I might have wherewith to blow the fire, I did smite two stones together that I might make fire. |

| 니전 17:14 | 이뿐 아니라 주께서 또 이르시되 너희가 약속된 땅에 도착하고 난 후, 너희는 나 주가 하나님이요, 나 주가 너희를 멸망에서 건져 낸 줄을, 참으로 내가 너희를 예루살렘 땅에서 인도해 낸 줄을 알게 되리라 하셨느니라. | Yea, and the Lord said also that: After ye have arrived in the promised land, ye shall know that I, the Lord, am God; and that I, the Lord, did deliver you from destruction; yea, that I did bring you out of the land of Jerusalem. |
| 니전 17:15 | 그리하여 나 니파이는 주의 계명을 지키고자 힘써 노력하였고, 나의 형제들에게 성실하고 부지런할 것을 권면하였느니라. | Wherefore, I, Nephi, did strive to keep the commandments of the Lord, and I did exhort my brethren to faithfulness and diligence. |
| 니전 17:16 | 또 이렇게 되었나니 내가 바위에서 녹여 낸 광석으로 연장을 만들었도다. | And it came to pass that I did make tools of the ore which I did molten out of the rock. |
| 니전 17:17 | 그리고 나의 형제들이 내가 바야흐로 배를 지으려 하는 것을 보고는 나에게 불평하기 시작하여 이르기를, 우리 동생은 바보로다, 이는 그가 배를 지을 수 있다고 생각함이라, 그뿐 아니라 그는 또한 이 큰 물을 건널 수 있다고 생각하는도다 하였더라. | And when my brethren saw that I was about to build a ship, they began to murmur against me, saying: Our brother is a fool, for he thinketh that he can build a ship; yea, and he also thinketh that he can cross these great waters. |
| 니전 17:18 | 또 이같이 나의 형제들은 나에게 불평하며 일하지 않으려 하였으니, 이는 내가 배를 지을 수 있음을 그들이 믿지 아니하였음이요, 또한 내가 주께 지시를 받았음도 믿으려 하지 아니하였음이더라. | And thus my brethren did complain against me, and were desirous that they might not labor, for they did not believe that I could build a ship; neither would they believe that I was instructed of the Lord. |
| 니전 17:19 | 이에 이제 이렇게 되었나니 나 니파이는 그들 마음의 완악함으로 인하여 심히 슬펐고, 이제 그들은 내가 슬퍼하기 시작하는 것을 보고 그 마음에 기뻐하였나니, 그리하여 나로 인하여 기뻐하며 이르기를, 우리는 네가 배를 건조할 수 없다는 것을 알았었나니, 이는 네가 판단력이 부족하다는 것을 우리가 알았음이니라. 그런즉 너는 그렇게 큰 일을 성취할 수 없느니라. | And now it came to pass that I, Nephi, was exceedingly sorrowful because of the hardness of their hearts; and now when they saw that I began to be sorrowful they were glad in their hearts, insomuch that they did rejoice over me, saying: We knew that ye could not construct a ship, for we knew that ye were lacking in judgment; wherefore, thou canst not accomplish so great a work. |
| 니전 17:20 | 또 너는 그 마음의 어리석은 상상에 이끌려 나온 우리 아버지와 같도다. 참으로 아버지는 우리를 예루살렘 땅에서 이끌어 내었고, 우리는 이 여러 해를 광야에서 방황하였으며, 우리의 여자들은 아이를 가진 무거운 몸으로 수고하였고, 그들은 광야에서 아이들을 낳았으며 죽음이 아닐 뿐 온갖 고초를 다 겪었나니, 그들이 이러한 고난을 겪는 것보다 예루살렘에서 나오기 전에 죽는 것이 나았으리라. | And thou art like unto our father, led away by the foolish imaginations of his heart; yea, he hath led us out of the land of Jerusalem, and we have wandered in the wilderness for these many years; and our women have toiled, being big with child; and they have borne children in the wilderness and suffered all things, save it were death; and it would have been better that they had died before they came out of Jerusalem than to have suffered these afflictions. |
| 니전 17:21 | 보라, 이 여러 해를 우리는 광야에서 고생하였나니, 그 시간에 우리는 우리의 소유와 우리 기업의 땅을 누릴 수 있었으리라. 또 우리는 행복했었으리라. | Behold, these many years we have suffered in the wilderness, which time we might have enjoyed our possessions and the land of our inheritance; yea, and we might have been happy. |
| 니전 17:22 | 또 우리는 예루살렘 땅에 있던 백성들이 의로운 백성이었음을 아노니, 이는 그들이 모세의 율법을 좇아 주의 규례와 법도와 그의 모든 계명을 지켰음이라. 그러한즉 우리는 그들이 의로운 백성임을 아노라. 그러하거늘 우리 아버지는 그들을 비판하였으며 우리가 부친의 말을 들으려 하였으므로 우리를 이끌어 내셨나니, 과연 우리 동생은 부친을 닮았도다. 이 같은 말로 참으로 나의 형제들은 우리에게 원망하며 불평을 토하였느니라. | And we know that the people who were in the land of Jerusalem were a righteous people; for they kept the statutes and judgments of the Lord, and all his commandments, according to the law of Moses; wherefore, we know that they are a righteous people; and our father hath judged them, and hath led us away because we would hearken unto his words; yea, and our brother is like unto him. And after this manner of language did my brethren murmur and complain against us. |
| 니전 17:23 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 나 니파이가 그들에게 말하여 이르되, 당신들은 이스라엘 자손인 우리 조상들이 주의 말씀을 듣지 아니하였어도 애굽인의 손에서 벗어나 이끌려 나왔으리라고 믿나이까? | And it came to pass that I, Nephi, spake unto them, saying: Do ye believe that our fathers, who were the children of Israel, would have been led away out of the hands of the Egyptians if they had not hearkened unto the words of the Lord? |
| 니전 17:24 | 참으로 당신들은 주께서 모세에게 그들을 속박에서 인도해 낼 것을 명하지 아니하셨어도 그들이 속박에서 인도되어 나왔으리라고 생각하나이까? | Yea, do ye suppose that they would have been led out of bondage, if the Lord had not commanded Moses that he should lead them out of bondage? |
| 니전 17:25 | 이제 당신들은 이스라엘 자손들이 속박되어 있었음을 아나이다. 또 당신들은 그들이 감당하기에 고통스러운 노역으로 짐 지워져 있었음을 아나이다. 그러한즉 당신들은 그들이 속박에서 벗어나게 되는 것이 그들에게 좋은 일임에 틀림없다는 것을 아나이다. | Now ye know that the children of Israel were in bondage; and ye know that they were laden with tasks, which were grievous to be borne; wherefore, ye know that it must needs be a good thing for them, that they should be brought out of bondage. |
| 니전 17:26 | 이제 당신들은 모세가 저 큰 일을 행하도록 주께로부터 명령을 받았음을 아나이다. 또 당신들은 그의 말에 의해 홍해의 물이 이리저리 갈라지고 그들이 마른 땅 위로 지나갔음을 아나이다. | Now ye know that Moses was commanded of the Lord to do that great work; and ye know that by his word the waters of the Red Sea were divided hither and thither, and they passed through on dry ground. |
| 니전 17:27 | 그러나 당신들은 애굽 사람들 곧 바로의 군대는 홍해에 빠져 죽었음을 아나이다. | But ye know that the Egyptians were drowned in the Red Sea, who were the armies of Pharaoh. |
| 니전 17:28 | 또한 당신들은 그들이 광야에서 만나를 받아먹었음을 아나이다. | And ye also know that they were fed with manna in the wilderness. |
| 니전 17:29 | 참으로 또한 당신들은 모세가 자기 안에 있는 하나님의 권능을 좇아, 말씀으로 바위를 치매 바위에서 물이 솟아 나와, 이스라엘 자손들이 그 갈증을 해소할 수 있었던 일도 아나이다. | Yea, and ye also know that Moses, by his word according to the power of God which was in him, smote the rock, and there came forth water, that the children of Israel might quench their thirst. |
| 니전 17:30 | 또 그들이 인도함을 받되 주 그들의 하나님, 그들의 구속주께서 그들 앞에 행하시며, 낮으로는 그들을 인도하시고 밤으로는 그들에게 빛을 주시며, 사람이 받기에 합당한 모든 것을 그들을 위하여 행하셨음에도 불구하고, 그들은 그 마음을 완악하게 하고 그 생각을 눈멀게 하여, 모세에게 또 참되시고 살아 계신 하나님께 대하여 욕하였나이다. | And notwithstanding they being led, the Lord their God, their Redeemer, going before them, leading them by day and giving light unto them by night, and doing all things for them which were expedient for man to receive, they hardened their hearts and blinded their minds, and reviled against Moses and against the true and living God. |
| 니전 17:31 | 이에 이렇게 되었나니 주께서 그 말씀을 좇아 그들을 멸하시고, 또 말씀을 좇아 그들을 인도하시고, 또 말씀을 좇아 그들을 위하여 모든 것을 행하셨나니, 그의 말씀으로 말미암지 않고서 이루어진 것이 하나도 없었나이다. | And it came to pass that according to his word he did destroy them; and according to his word he did lead them; and according to his word he did do all things for them; and there was not any thing done save it were by his word. |
| 니전 17:32 | 또 그들이 요단 강을 건넌 후, 그가 그들을 강하게 하사 그 땅의 자손들을 몰아 내게 하시되, 참으로 그들을 흩어 멸하게 하셨거니와, | And after they had crossed the river Jordan he did make them mighty unto the driving out of the children of the land, yea, unto the scattering them to destruction. |
| 니전 17:33 | 이제 당신들은 이 땅의 자손들 곧 약속의 땅에 있다가 우리 조상들에게 쫓겨난 그들이, 당신들은 그들이 의로웠다고 생각하나이까? 보소서, 내가 당신들께 이르노니, 아니이다. | And now, do ye suppose that the children of this land, who were in the land of promise, who were driven out by our fathers, do ye suppose that they were righteous? Behold, I say unto you, Nay. |
| 니전 17:34 | 당신들은 그들이 의로웠더라도, 우리 조상들이 더 택함 받을 만 했을 것이라 생각하나이까? 내가 당신들께 이르노니, 아니이다. | Do ye suppose that our fathers would have been more choice than they if they had been righteous? I say unto you, Nay. |
| 니전 17:35 | 보소서, 주는 모든 육체를 하나로 여기시나니, 의로운 자는 하나님께 사랑을 입는 것이라. 그러나 보소서, 이 백성은 하나님의 말씀을 낱낱이 거절하였고, 그들이 죄악으로 무르익은지라, 하나님의 가득한 진노가 그들에게 임하였나이다. 또 주께서 그들에게는 그 땅을 저주하시고, 우리 조상들에게는 그 땅을 축복하셨나니, 참으로 그들에게는 그 땅을 저주하사 그들로 멸망하게 하시고, 우리 조상들에게는 그 땅을 축복하사 그 땅을 다스릴 권능을 얻게 하셨나이다. | Behold, the Lord esteemeth all flesh in one; he that is righteous is favored of God. But behold, this people had rejected every word of God, and they were ripe in iniquity; and the fulness of the wrath of God was upon them; and the Lord did curse the land against them, and bless it unto our fathers; yea, he did curse it against them unto their destruction, and he did bless it unto our fathers unto their obtaining power over it. |
| 니전 17:36 | 보소서, 주께서는 지구를 창조하사 거할 곳이 되게 하시고, 그의 자녀들을 창조하사 그것을 차지하게 하셨나이다. | Behold, the Lord hath created the earth that it should be inhabited; and he hath created his children that they should possess it. |
| 니전 17:37 | 또 그는 의로운 나라를 일으키시며 악인들의 나라는 멸망시키시나이다. | And he raiseth up a righteous nation, and destroyeth the nations of the wicked. |
| 니전 17:38 | 또 그는 의인들을 인도해 가사 귀한 땅에 들이시고, 악인들은 멸하시며, 그들로 인해 그들에게는 땅을 저주하시나이다. | And he leadeth away the righteous into precious lands, and the wicked he destroyeth, and curseth the land unto them for their sakes. |
| 니전 17:39 | 그는 하늘 높은 곳에서 다스리시나니, 이는 하늘이 그의 보좌임이요, 이 땅은 그의 발등상이라. | He ruleth high in the heavens, for it is his throne, and this earth is his footstool. |
| 니전 17:40 | 또 그는 그로 자기 하나님을 삼고자 하는 자들을 사랑하시나니, 보소서, 그는 우리 조상들을 사랑하사 그들 곧 아브라함, 이삭, 그리고 야곱과 성약을 맺으셨고, 맺으신 그 성약을 기억하셨으므로 그들을 애굽 땅에서 인도해 내셨나이다. | And he loveth those who will have him to be their God. Behold, he loved our fathers, and he covenanted with them, yea, even Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and he remembered the covenants which he had made; wherefore, he did bring them out of the land of Egypt. |
| 니전 17:41 | 또 그는 광야에서 그의 지팡이로 그들을 곤경에 빠지게 하셨나니, 이는 그들이 당신들처럼 그 마음을 완악하게 하였음이요, 또 주께서는 그들의 죄악으로 인하여 그들을 곤경에 빠지게 하셨더라. 그가 나는 불뱀들을 그들 가운데 보내셨고, 그들이 물린 후에는 나을 수 있는 방법을 마련해 주셨더니, 그들이 해야 할 일은 쳐다보는 것이었으매, 그 방법이 간단하였음으로 인하여, 곧 쉬웠음으로 인하여 죽은 자가 많았나이다. | And he did straiten them in the wilderness with his rod; for they hardened their hearts, even as ye have; and the Lord straitened them because of their iniquity. He sent fiery flying serpents among them; and after they were bitten he prepared a way that they might be healed; and the labor which they had to perform was to look; and because of the simpleness of the way, or the easiness of it, there were many who perished. |
| 니전 17:42 | 또 그들이 시시로 그 마음을 완악하게 하였고, 또 그들이 참으로 모세에게 또한 하나님께 대하여 욕하였음에도 불구하고, 그들이 비길 데 없는 그의 권능으로 인도되어 약속의 땅으로 들어갔음을 당신들이 아나이다. | And they did harden their hearts from time to time, and they did revile against Moses, and also against God; nevertheless, ye know that they were led forth by his matchless power into the land of promise. |
| 니전 17:43 | 또 이제 이 모든 일 후에 그들이 간악하게 된 때가 이르렀나니, 참으로 거의 무르익었나이다. 또 그들은 아마 지금쯤 바야흐로 멸망당하게 되었으리니, 이는 끌려가 사로잡히게 될 소수를 제외하고는 그들이 반드시 멸망당할 날이 정녕 이를 것임을 내가 아나이다. | And now, after all these things, the time has come that they have become wicked, yea, nearly unto ripeness; and I know not but they are at this day about to be destroyed; for I know that the day must surely come that they must be destroyed, save a few only, who shall be led away into captivity. |
| 니전 17:44 | 그리하여 주께서 나의 부친에게 광야로 떠나라고 명하셨거니와, 유대인들 또한 그의 생명을 빼앗으려 하였고 그뿐 아니라 당신들도 그의 생명을 빼앗으려 하였나니, 그런즉 당신들은 마음에 살인한 자들이며 당신들은 그들과 같나이다. | Wherefore, the Lord commanded my father that he should depart into the wilderness; and the Jews also sought to take away his life; yea, and ye also have sought to take away his life; wherefore, ye are murderers in your hearts and ye are like unto them. |
| 니전 17:45 | 당신들은 죄악을 행하는 데는 재빠르나, 주 곧 당신들의 하나님을 기억하는 데는 더디나이다. 당신들은 천사를 보았고 그가 당신들에게 말하였으니 참으로 당신들은 시시로 그의 음성을 들었나이다. 또 그가 당신들에게 고요하고 작은 음성으로 말하였으되, 당신들이 감각이 없어 그의 말씀을 감지할 수 없었나이다. 그리하여 그가 우레 소리처럼 당신들에게 말하매, 그로 인해 땅이 마치 갈라질 듯 진동하였나이다. | Ye are swift to do iniquity but slow to remember the Lord your God. Ye have seen an angel, and he spake unto you; yea, ye have heard his voice from time to time; and he hath spoken unto you in a still small voice, but ye were past feeling, that ye could not feel his words; wherefore, he has spoken unto you like unto the voice of thunder, which did cause the earth to shake as if it were to divide asunder. |
| 니전 17:46 | 또한 당신들은 그가 그의 전능한 말씀의 권능으로 땅으로 하여금 사라지게 하실 수 있음도 아나이다. 그뿐 아니라 당신들은 그의 말씀으로 그가 거친 곳들로 편편하게 되게 하실 수 있으며, 편편한 곳들은 일구어지리라는 것을 아나이다. 오 그러하거늘 당신들 마음이 그토록 완악할 수 있음은 무슨 연고니이까? | And ye also know that by the power of his almighty word he can cause the earth that it shall pass away; yea, and ye know that by his word he can cause the rough places to be made smooth, and smooth places shall be broken up. O, then, why is it, that ye can be so hard in your hearts? |

| 니전 17:48 | 이에 이제 이렇게 되었나니 내가 이러한 말을 하고 나자, 그들은 나에게 노하여 나를 깊은 바다에 던져 버리고자 하더라. 이에 그들이 내게 손을 대려고 나아올 때 내가 그들에게 말하여 이르되, 전능하신 하나님의 이름으로 내가 당신들에게 명하노니, 당신들은 나를 다치지 마소서. 이는 내가 나의 육신을 소멸할 만큼 하나님의 권능으로 충만함이니, 누구든지 그 손을 내게 대는 자는 마른 갈대처럼 말라 버릴 것이라. 또 그는 하나님의 권능 앞에 아무것도 아닌 것같이 되리니, 이는 하나님이 그를 치실 것임이니이다 하였더라. | And now it came to pass that when I had spoken these words they were angry with me, and were desirous to throw me into the depths of the sea; and as they came forth to lay their hands upon me I spake unto them, saying: In the name of the Almighty God, I command you that ye touch me not, for I am filled with the power of God, even unto the consuming of my flesh; and whoso shall lay his hands upon me shall wither even as a dried reed; and he shall be as naught before the power of God, for God shall smite him. |

Now they durst not do this lest they should wither before me, so powerful was the Spirit of God; and thus it had wrought upon them. |

| 니전 17:55 | 그제야 그들이 이르기를, 주께서 너와 함께 계신 줄 우리가 분명히 아노니, 이는 우리를 흔든 것이 주의 권능인 줄 우리가 앎이로다 하고, 그들이 내 앞에 엎드려 내게 경배하려 하더라. 그러나 내가 그들을 용납하지 아니하려 하여 이르기를, 나는 당신들의 형제 곧 참으로 당신들의 동생이니이다. 그러한즉 주 곧 당신들의 하나님을 경배하고 당신들의 아버지와 어머니를 공경하여, 주 하나님께서 당신들에게 주실 땅에서 당신들의 날이 길도록 하소서 하였더라. | And now, they said: We know of a surety that the Lord is with thee, for we know that it is the power of the Lord that has shaken us. And they fell down before me, and were about to worship me, but I would not suffer them, saying: I am thy brother, yea, even thy younger brother; wherefore, worship the Lord thy God, and honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which the Lord thy God shall give thee. |
