The Nephites keep the law of Moses, look forward to the coming of Christ, and prosper in the land—Many prophets labor to keep them in the way of truth. [Between 420 and 361 B.C.]		 예이롬서

이노스의 아들 예이롬이 기록을 관리함. 니파인들이 주님을 섬겨 번성함.
예이 1:1 이제 보라, 나 예이롬은 나의 부친 이노스의 명을 좇아 몇 마디 말을 기록하여 우리의 족보가 계속 기록되게 하노라.

 

 Now behold, I, Jarom, write a few words according to the commandment of my father, Enos, that our genealogy may be kept.  1.보라 나 예이롬은 나의 부친 이노스의 명을 받들어 우리 가문의 족보를 관리하여야겠기에 몇자 기록하며,
예이 1:2 또 이 판은 작고, 이러한 것들은 우리의 형제 레이맨인들의 유익이 되게 할 목적으로 기록되는 것인즉, 그러므로 내가 조금 기록해야만 하느니라. 그러나 나는 나의 예언함에 관한 것이나 나의 계시에 대한 것은 기록하지 아니하리니, 나의 조상들이 기록한 것 외에 내가 무엇을 더 기록할 수 있으랴? 그들이 구원의 계획을 밝히지 아니하였느냐? 내가 너희에게 이르노니, 그리하였도다. 그런즉 이것으로 내가 족하게 여기노라.

 

And as these plates are small, and as these things are written for the intent of the benefit of our brethren the Lamanites, wherefore, it must needs be that I write a little; but I shall not write the things of my prophesying, nor of my revelations. For what could I write more than my fathers have written? For have not they revealed the plan of salvation? I say unto you, Yea; and this sufficeth me.

the things of 라는 표현은 표준경전 46구절 (합본 36, 성경 10) 중 행18:25의 '예수에 관한 것'을 제외하고 성경은 9곳 모두 '일'로 번역되었고, 합본은 아래 16 곳은 '일'로 20곳은 '것'으로 혼용되어 번역되었다.

 2.이 판이 작은 판인지라, 우리들의 형제 레이맨인들에게 유익이 될것을 간단히 적으며, 나의 예언이나 계시의 말씀은 기록하지 아니하리라. 나의 선조들께서 적으셨거늘 그 위에 더 무엇을 적으랴? 저들이 이미 구원의 계획을 밝히지 아니하셨느냐? 내가 너희에게 이르노니 밝히셨도다. 내가 이것으로 족한 줄 아노라.
예이 1:3 보라, 이 백성 가운데 많은 일이 이루어져야 할 필요가 있나니, 그들의 마음이 완악하며, 그들의 귀가 먹었으며 그들의 생각이 눈이 멀며, 그들의 목이 뻣뻣한 연고라. 그럼에도 불구하고, 하나님은 그들을 심히 긍휼히 여기사, 아직은 이 땅 위에서 그들을 쓸어 버리지 아니하셨더라.

 

 Behold, it is expedient that much should be done among this people, because of the hardness of their hearts, and the deafness of their ears, and the blindness of their minds, and the stiffness of their necks;  3.보라 이 백성들에게 마땅히 벌이 있어야 할 것은 저들의 마음이 강퍅하며 귀가 우둔하며 마음이 어두우며 교만함이라. 그럼에도 하나님은 저들을 긍휼히 여기사 이 땅위에서 쓸어 버리지 아니하시었고,
예이 1:4 또 우리 중에 계시를 많이 받은 자가 많이 있나니, 이는 그들이 모두 목이 뻣뻣하지는 아니함이요, 목이 뻣뻣하지 아니하고 신앙을 가진 자마다 사람의 자녀들에게 그들의 신앙에 따라 나타내시는 성령과 더불어 교통함이라.

 

 And there are many among us who have many revelations, for they are not all stiffnecked. And as many as are not stiffnecked and have faith, have communion with the Holy Spirit, which maketh manifest unto the children of men, according to their faith.  4.백성들이 모두 교만하지 아니하매 많은 계시의 말씀을 받은 자가 많으며, 많은 자들이 교만하지 아니하여 신앙을 가지며 사람이 지닌 신앙에 따라 사람들에게 나타내어 알게 하시는 성령과 더불어 교통하나니,
예이 1:5 또 이제 보라, 이백 년이 지나갔고, 니파이 백성은 땅에서 점차 강대하여졌더라. 그들이 모세의 율법 지키기와 안식일을 주 앞에 거룩하게 지키기를 준행하였고, 그들이 불경하거나 모독을 행하지 아니하였나니, 그 땅의 법은 심히 엄격하였더라.

 

 And now, behold, two hundred years had passed away, and the people of Nephi had waxed strong in the land. They observed to keep the law of Moses and the sabbath day holy unto the Lord. And they profaned not; neither did they blaspheme. And the laws of the land were exceedingly strict.  5.보라 이백년이 지나 니파이 백성들은 땅에서 강대하여졌고, 모세의 율법을 지키며 안식일을 주 앞에 거룩하게 지켰도다. 저들은 주를 욕되게 하거나 거스르지 아니하였고, 나라의 법은 심히 엄격하였더라.
예이 1:6 또 그들은 지면에 널리 흩어졌고, 레이맨인들도 그러하였나니, 저들은 니파이인들보다 그 수가 심히 더 많았으며, 저들은 살인을 좋아하고 짐승의 피를 마셨느니라.

 

 And they were scattered upon much of the face of the land, and the Lamanites also. And they were exceedingly more numerous than were they of the Nephites; and they loved murder and would drink the blood of beasts.  6.니파이인들은 땅위에 널리 퍼져 흩어져 살았으며 레이맨인들도 그러하였도다. 레이맨인들의 수는 니파이인들보다 엄청나게 많았으며, 저들은 살생을 즐기고 들 짐승들의 피 마시기를 즐겼느니라.
예이 1:7 또 이렇게 되었나니 저들이 여러번 우리 니파이인들을 대적하여 싸우러 왔었으나, 우리의 열왕과 우리의 지도자들은 주께 대한 신앙의 용사들이었던지라. 그들이 주의 길을 백성에게 가르쳤으므로, 그로 인해 우리가 레이맨인들에 맞서서 저들을 우리 땅에서 쓸어내고, 우리의 성읍들 또는 우리가 기업으로 받은 모든 곳들을 방비하기 시작하였느니라.

 

 And it came to pass that they came many times against us, the Nephites, to battle. But our kings and our leaders were mighty men in the faith of the Lord; and they taught the people the ways of the Lord; wherefore, we withstood the Lamanites and swept them away out of our lands, and began to fortify our cities, or whatsoever place of our inheritance.  7.또한 저들은 여러 번 우리 니파이인들에게 쳐들어와 전쟁을 일으켰으나, 우리의 열왕과 지도자들이 주를 믿는 신앙이 극히 굳건하여 백성들에게 주의 길을 가르쳤으므로, 우리가 레이맨인들을 막아 땅에서 몰아 내며 우리의 성읍과 모든 상속의 땅을 강하게 구축하였느니라.
예이 1:8 또 우리는 심히 번성하여, 지면에 퍼졌고, 금과 은과 귀한 것과 목세공품과 건물과 기계류와 또한 철과 구리와 놋과 강철이 심히 풍부해져서, 땅을 가는 온갖 종류의 각종 연장과 전쟁 무기를 만들었나니 - 참으로 끝이 날카로운 화살과 화살통과 단창과 창 및 전쟁을 위한 모든 준비라.

 

 And we multiplied exceedingly, and spread upon the face of the land, and became exceedingly rich in gold, and in silver, and in precious things, and in fine workmanship of wood, in buildings, and in machinery, and also in iron and copper, and brass and steel, making all manner of tools of every kind to till the ground, and weapons of war-yea, the sharp pointed arrow, and the quiver, and the dart, and the javelin, and all preparations for war.  8.놀라웁게 번성하여 지면에 흩어지며, 금은과 온갖 보배로운 것으로 부유해져서 목재 공품, 건물, 기계, 철, 구리, 놋쇠, 강철과 땅을 가는 온갖 연장과 전쟁 무기가 풍성하니 촉이 날카로운 화살, 화살통, 던지는 짧은 창, 창 등 온갖 것으로 전쟁의 때를 대비하여 준비하니라.
예이 1:9 이같이 레이맨인들을 만날 준비를 갖추매, 저들이 우리를 거스려 형통하지 못하였나니, 이에 우리 조상들에게 하신 주의 말씀이 확증되었느니라 말씀하시기를, 너희가 나의 계명을 지킬진대 너희가 이 땅에서 번성하리라 하셨느니라.

 

 And thus being prepared to meet the Lamanites, they did not prosper against us. But the word of the Lord was verified, which he spake unto our fathers, saying that: Inasmuch as ye will keep my commandments ye shall prosper in the land.  9.이렇게 우리가 레이맨인들을 막아낼 준비를 갖추는 반면에 저들이 우리만큼 번성하지 못함은 우리 조상들에게 하신 주님의 말씀이 입증됨이라 이르셨으되, 너희가 나의 계명을 지키면 땅에서 번성하리로다 하신지라,
예이 1:10 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 주의 선지자들이 하나님의 말씀을 좇아 니파이 백성을 위협하되, 만일 그들이 계명을 지키지 아니하고 범법에 떨어지면, 지면에서 멸절되리라 하였더라.

그리고 이렇게 되었나니 주의 선지자들이 하나님의 말씀을 좇아 니파이 백성에게 경계하되, 만일 그들이 계명을 지키지 아니하고 범법에 떨어지면, 지면에서 멸절되리라 하였더라.

 And it came to pass that the prophets of the Lord did threaten the people of Nephi, according to the word of God, that if they did not keep the commandments, but should fall into transgression, they should be destroyed from off the face of the land.

주) 위협하되 -> 선지자가 백성을 '위협한다'는 번역은 어색하다.

  10.주의 예언자들이 하나님의 말씀으로 니파이인들을 경계하여 계명을 지키지 아니하고 범법하면 땅위에서 멸망되리라고 하였으므로,
예이 1:11 그리하여 선지자들과 제사들과 교사들이 부지런함을 다하여 오래 참음으로 백성들을 권면하여 부지런하게 하고, 모세의 율법과 그것이 주어진 목적을 가르치고, 메시야를 고대하며 마치 그가 이미 오신 것같이 장차 오실 그를 믿도록 그들을 설득하였나니, 이같이 그들이 백성들을 가르쳤느니라.

 

 Wherefore, the prophets, and the priests, and the teachers, did labor diligently, exhorting with all long-suffering the people to diligence; teaching the law of Moses, and the intent for which it was given; persuading them to look forward unto the Messiah, and believe in him to come as though he already was. And after this manner did they teach them.  11.예언자와 제사와 교사가 인내로 부지런히 백성들을 가르쳐 부지런하게 하며, 모세의 율법을 그 주어진 뜻대로 가르치며, 메시야를 기다리며 그의 강림을 믿도록 이미 그가 오신듯이 권고하여 가르치는 등, 이들은 모두 이 같이 백성들을 가르쳤느니라.
예이 1:12 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 그리함으로써 그들이 백성들을 지켜 지면에서 멸망당하지 않게 하였으니, 이는 그들이 말씀으로 그들의 마음을 찌르며, 쉬지 않고 그들을 일깨워 회개하게 하였음이라.

 

 And it came to pass that by so doing they kept them from being destroyed upon the face of the land; for they did prick their hearts with the word, continually stirring them up unto repentance.  12.이렇게 하여 이들은 백성들이 지면에서 멸망당하지 않게 하였으니, 말씀으로 저들의 가슴을 찌르며 저들에게 쉬지 않고 회개를 종용함이라.
예이 1:13 또 이렇게 되었나니 이백삼십팔 년이 지나갔으되 - 그 중 많은 세월 동안 전쟁과 다툼과 불화가 있었느니라.

 

 And it came to pass that two hundred and thirty and eight years had passed away-after the manner of wars, and contentions, and dissensions, for the space of much of the time.  13.이백 삼십 팔년이 지나도록 전쟁과 불화와 다툼이 여러 해동안 일었나니,
예이 1:14 나 예이롬은 더 기록하지 아니하노니, 이는 판이 작음이라. 그러나 보라, 나의 형제들아, 너희는 니파이의 다른 판으로 갈 수 있나니, 이는 보라, 그 위에 열왕의 기록하는 바, 혹은 그들이 기록하게 한 바를 좇아, 우리의 전쟁의 기록이 새겨져 있음이니라.

 

 And I, Jarom, do not write more, for the plates are small. But behold, my brethren, ye can go to the other plates of Nephi; for behold, upon them the records of our wars are engraven, according to the writings of the kings, or those which they caused to be written.  14.나 예이롬은 판이 적어 더 기록하지 아니하나, 보라 나의 형제들아 너희는 니파이의 다른 판을 상고할지니, 보라 그곳에 전쟁의 기사가 수록되며 열왕과 저들이 기록해야 했던 바가 새겨져 있음이라.
예이 1:15 이제 나는 이 판을 나의 아들 옴나이의 손에 넘겨, 그것이 나의 조상들의 명령대로 기록되게 하노라.

 

 And I deliver these plates into the hands of my son Omni, that they may be kept according to the commandments of my fathers.  15.이제 나는 이판을 나의 아들 옴나이의 손에 넘겨 주어 저로 나의 조상들이 명하신 바를 받들어 지키게 하리로다.
