 The Nephites and the Lamanites are all converted to the Church of Christ—They have all things in common, work miracles, and prosper in the land—After two centuries divisions, evils, false churches, and persecutions arise—After three hundred years both the Nephites and the Lamanites are wicked—Ammaron hides up the sacred records. 4니 1:1 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 제삼십사년이 지나가고, 또 제삼십오년도 지나가매, 보라 예수의 제자들은 주변의 온 땅에 그리스도의 교회를 세웠고, 그들에게로 와서, 자기의 죄를 진실로 회개하는 자는 모두 다 예수의 이름으로 침례를 받았으며, 또한 성신을 받았느니라.

 

 And it came to pass that the thirty and fourth year passed away, and also the thirty and fifth, and behold the disciples of Jesus had formed a church of Christ in all the lands round about. And as many as did come unto them, and did truly repent of their sins, were baptized in the name of Jesus; and they did also receive the Holy Ghost.  1.삼십 사년과 삼십 오년이 지나매, 보라 예수의 제자들은 온 땅에 그리스도의 교회를 세웠고 많은 백성들이 저들에게로 와서 저희 죄를 회개하여 예수의 이름으로 침례를 받았으며 또한 성신을 받았느니라.
4니 1:2 또 이렇게 되었나니 제삼십육년에는 니파이인이나 레이맨인이나를 막론하고 온 땅의 백성이 모두 주께로 돌이켰고, 저들 중에 다툼이나 논쟁이 없었으며, 사람마다 서로 대하기를 바르게 하였더라.

 

 And it came to pass in the thirty and sixth year, the people were all converted unto the Lord, upon all the face of the land, both Nephites and Lamanites, and there were no contentions and disputations among them, and every man did deal justly one with another.  2.삼십 육년에 이르러 온 땅의 백성들이 니파이인이나 레이맨인이나를 막론하고 모두 개심하여 주께로 돌아왔고, 백성들 간에 다툼이나 불화가 없었으며 사람들이 서로 대하기를 바르게 하였더라.
4니 1:3 또 저들은 저들 가운데 모든 것을 공유하였나니, 그러므로 부한 자나 가난한 자, 매인 자나 자유로운 자가 없이 저들이 모두 자유롭고 하늘의 은사에 참여하는 자가 되었더라.

 

 And they had all things common among them; therefore there were not rich and poor, bond and free, but they were all made free, and partakers of the heavenly gift.  3.또한 저들은 저들의 온갖 소유를 공유하였던지라 부자나 가난한 사람이나 속박된 자나 자유로운 자의 구별이 없이 모두 자유로웠고, 저들이 모두 하늘의 은사를 받았으며,
4니 1:4 또 이렇게 되었나니 제삼십칠년이 지나갔으되 땅에는 여전히 평화가 계속되었더라.

 

 And it came to pass that the thirty and seventh year passed away also, and there still continued to be peace in the land.  4.이같이 삼십 칠년이 지나되 땅에는 평화가 계속되었고,
4니 1:5 또 예수의 제자들은 크고 기이한 일들을 행하여 병든 자를 고치며, 죽은 자를 일으키며, 못 걷는 자를 걷게 하며, 맹인으로 그 시력을 얻게 하며, 못 듣는 자를 듣게 하며, 사람의 자녀들 가운데 온갖 기적을 행하되, 다름 아닌 오직 예수의 이름으로만 그들이 기적을 행하였느니라.

 

 And there were great and marvelous works wrought by the disciples of Jesus, insomuch that they did heal the sick, and raise the dead, and cause the lame to walk, and the blind to receive their sight, and the deaf to hear; and all manner of miracles did they work among the children of men; and in nothing did they work miracles save it were in the name of Jesus.  5.예수의 제자들이 크고 놀라운 일들을 베풀어 행하매, 저들이 병든자를 고치고 죽은 자를 살리며 절름발이를 걷게 하며 소경을 보게 하고 귀머거리를 듣게 하는등 온갖 기사를 백성들에게 베풀되 오직 예수의 이름으로 이를 행하였느니라.
4니 1:6 이에 이같이 제삼십팔년이 지나가고 또한 제삼십구년과 제사십일년과 제사십이년이 지나가며, 참으로 사십구 년이 지나가기에 이르고 또한 제오십일년과 제오십이년이 지나가서, 참으로 오십구 년이 지나가기에 이르렀더라.

 

 And thus did the thirty and eighth year pass away, and also the thirty and ninth, and forty and first, and the forty and second, yea, even until forty and nine years had passed away, and also the fifty and first, and the fifty and second; yea, and even until fifty and nine years had passed away.  6.이같이 하여 차례로 삼십 팔년, 삼십 구년, 사십년, 사십 일년, 사십 이년이 지났고, 사십 구년, 오십년, 오십일년, 오십 이년이 지나 마침내 오십 구년이 지났으며,
4니 1:7 또 주께서는 저들을 땅에서 심히 번영하게 하신지라, 참으로 저들이 불탄 성읍들이 있던 곳에 다시 성읍들을 세웠더라.

 

 And the Lord did prosper them exceedingly in the land; yea, insomuch that they did build cities again where there had been cities burned.  7.주가 저들을 땅에서 크게 번영케 하신지라, 저들은 불탄 자리에 다시 성읍을 지었고,
4니 1:8 참으로 저 큰 성 제이라헤믈라를 저들이 다시 건축되게 하였더라.

 

 Yea, even that great city Zarahemla did they cause to be built again.  8.저 큰 성 제이라헤믈라도 다시 짓게 하였으나,
4니 1:9 그러나 많은 성읍이 가라앉아, 물이 그 대신에 올라왔으므로, 이러한 성읍들은 새롭게 할 수 없었더라.

 

 But there were many cities which had been sunk, and waters came up in the stead thereof; therefore these cities could not be renewed.  9.많은 성읍이 가라앉아 성읍이 있던 자리에 물이 덮힌고로 이러한 성읍들을 낱낱이 증축할 수는 없었더라.
4니 1:10 또 이제 보라, 이렇게 되었나니 니파이 백성은 점점 강하여지고, 심히 빠르게 번성하며, 심히 아름답고 기뻐하심을 입는 백성이 되었더라.

 

 And now, behold, it came to pass that the people of Nephi did wax strong, and did multiply exceedingly fast, and became an exceedingly fair and delightsome people.  10.이제 보라 니파이 백성들이 강대해지며 크게 번성하고 심히 아름답고 복된 백성이 되어,
4니 1:11 또 저들은 시집가고, 장가들며, 주께서 저들에게 맺으신 수많은 약속대로 복을 받았더라.

 

 And they were married, and given in marriage, and were blessed according to the multitude of the promises which the Lord had made unto them.  11.저들은 시집가고 장가들어 주님께서 저들과 맺으신 언약대로 풍성한 축복을 받았으며,
4니 1:12 그리고 더 이상 모세의 율법의 의례와 의식을 따라 행하지 아니하고, 저들의 주 곧 저들의 하나님으로부터 받은 계명을 좇아 행하며, 금식과 기도를 계속하며, 자주 함께 모여 기도하며, 주의 말씀 듣기를 계속하였더라.

 

And they did not walk any more after the performances and ordinances of the law of Moses; but they did walk after the commandments which they had received from their Lord and their God, continuing in fasting and prayer, and in meeting together oft both to pray and to hear the word of the Lord.

4니 1:13 또 이렇게 되었나니 온 땅의 모든 백성 가운데 다툼이 없었으며, 예수의 제자들 가운데서는 능한 기적들이 행하여졌더라.

 

 And it came to pass that there was no contention among all the people, in all the land; but there were mighty miracles wrought among the disciples of Jesus.  13.온 땅에 거하는 만백성들 간에는 분쟁이 일지 아니하였고 예수의 제자들이 백성들에게 놀라운 기적을 행하였더라.
4니 1:14 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 제칠십일년이 지나가고, 또한 제칠십이년도 지나가고, 마침내 제칠십구년이 지나가고 참으로 백 년이 지나매, 예수께서 택하셨던 제자들이, 머물게 될 세 사람을 제외하고는 모두 하나님의 낙원으로 갔고, 그들 대신에 다른 제자들이 성임되었으며, 많은 그 세대 사람들이 또한 세상을 떠났느니라.

 

 And it came to pass that the seventy and first year passed away, and also the seventy and second year, yea, and in fine, till the seventy and ninth year had passed away; yea, even an hundred years had passed away, and the disciples of Jesus, whom he had chosen, had all gone to the paradise of God, save it were the three who should tarry; and there were other disciples ordained in their stead; and also many of that generation had passed away.  14.칠십 일년과 칠십 이년이 지나고 마침내 칠십 구년이 지나고 백년이 지나매 예수께서 택하셨던 제자들이 이 땅에 남기로 한 세 사람을 남기고는 모두 하나님의 낙원으로 갔고 저들 대신 다른 자들이 제자로 성임되었으며 많은 그 세대 사람들이 세상을 떠나니라.
4니 1:15 또 이렇게 되었나니 백성들의 마음 속에 거하는 하나님의 사랑으로 말미암아 그 땅에 다툼이 없었더라.

 

 And it came to pass that there was no contention in the land, because of the love of God which did dwell in the hearts of the people.  15.또한 하나님의 사랑이 백성들의 마음에 깃들어 온 땅에 불화가 일지 아니하였고,
4니 1:16 그리고 시기함이나, 싸움이나, 소동이나, 음행이나, 거짓말하는 일이나, 살인이나, 여하한 종류의 음란함도 없었으니, 정녕 하나님의 손으로 창조된 모든 백성 중에서 이들보다 더 행복한 백성이 있을 수 없었더라.

 

 And there were no envyings, nor strifes, nor tumults, nor whoredoms, nor lyings, nor murders, nor any manner of lasciviousness; and surely there could not be a happier people among all the people who had been created by the hand of God.  16.시기나 분쟁이나 폭동, 음행, 거짓말, 살인 등 온갖 음란한 짓을 범치 아니하였으며 하나님의 손으로 지어진 인간중에서 이들보다 더 행복한 백성이 없었으니,
4니 1:17 도적이나 살인자도 없었고 레이맨인이라든가 무슨무슨인이라고 불리움도 없이, 그들은 하나로서, 그리스도의 자녀요, 하나님의 나라의 상속자이었더라.

 

 There were no robbers, nor murderers, neither were there Lamanites, nor any manner of -ites; but they were in one, the children of Christ, and heirs to the kingdom of God.  17.도적이나 살인자가 없었고 레이맨인이라든가 혹은 다른 종족의 차별이 없이 모두 그리스도의 자녀요 하나님 나라의 상속자로 한 덩어리가 되었더라.
4니 1:18 또 그들은 얼마나 복되었던고! 이는 주께서 그들의 범사에 복을 주셨음이라, 참으로 그들은 복을 받아 번영하며 백십 년이 지나기에 이르렀으니, 이에 그리스도로부터 첫째 세대가 지나갔고 온 땅에는 다툼이 없었더라.

 

 And how blessed were they! For the Lord did bless them in all their doings; yea, even they were blessed and prospered until an hundred and ten years had passed away; and the first generation from Christ had passed away, and there was no contention in all the land.  18.주가 저들이 행하는 대로 낱낱이 축복하시니 저들의 복됨이 어떠하겠느냐. 저들이 이같이 복을 받아 번영하는 중에 백 십년이 지났으니, 그리스도가 오신 때로부터 한 세대가 지나도록 온 땅에 불화가 없었고,
4니 1:19 또 이렇게 되었나니 이 마지막 기록을 기록하던 니파이가 (그는 이를 니파이의 판에 기록하였더라) 죽으매, 그의 아들 아모스가 그를 대신하여 이를 기록하되, 저도 이를 니파이의 판에 기록하였더라.

 

 And it came to pass that Nephi, he that kept this last record, (and he kept it upon the plates of Nephi) died, and his son Amos kept it in his stead; and he kept it upon the plates of Nephi also.  19.이 마지막 판을 기록한 니파이가(니파이는 이를 니파이의 판에 기록하였더라) 죽으매 그의 아들 아모스가 그 뒤를 이어 역시 니파이의 판에 기록하였으며,
4니 1:20 이에 저가 팔십사 년 동안 이를 기록하였으며 땅에는 여전히 평화가 있었으나, 다만 백성 중 소수의 부류가 모반하여 교회를 떠나 스스로 레이맨인이라 하는 이름을 취한 일이 있었나니 이리하여 땅에 다시 레이맨인이 생기니라.

 

 And he kept it eighty and four years, and there was still peace in the land, save it were a small part of the people who had revolted from the church and taken upon them the name of Lamanites; therefore there began to be Lamanites again in the land.  20.저가 팔십 사년을 두고 기사를 기록하는 중에 소수의 무리가 모반하여 교회를 떠나 스스로 저들을 레이맨인이라 칭한 일이 있었을 뿐, 땅에는 평화가 계속되었으되 이 일로 하여 레이맨인이 다시 땅에 생기니라.
4니 1:21 또 이렇게 되었나니 아모스도 죽고, (때는 주께서 오신 때로부터 백구십사 년이었더라) 그의 아들 아모스가 그를 대신하여 기록을 계속하되, 그도 이를 니파이의 판에 기록하였으며 이는 또한 니파이의 책 곧 이 책에도 기록되었느니라.

 

 And it came to pass that Amos died also, (and it was an hundred and ninety and four years from the coming of Christ) and his son Amos kept the record in his stead; and he also kept it upon the plates of Nephi; and it was also written in the book of Nephi, which is this book.  21.아모스가 역시 죽어(주후 백 구십 사년이라) 그의 아들 아모스가 그 뒤를 이어 기사를 나파이 판에 기록하니, 바로 이 책인 니파이서에 기록되었느니라.
4니 1:22 또 이렇게 되었나니 이백 년이 지나매, 소수를 제외하고는 둘째 세대가 모두 세상을 떠나니라.

 

 And it came to pass that two hundred years had passed away; and the second generation had all passed away save it were a few.  22.이같이 이백년이 지나매 몇몇을 남기고는 둘째 세대의 백성들도 모두 세상을 떠나니라.
4니 1:23 그리고 이제 나 몰몬은 백성들이 번성하여, 이윽고 온 지면에 퍼졌고, 그리스도 안에서 그들이 번영하였음으로 인하여 그들이 심히 부하게 되었음을 너희가 알기 원하노라.

 

 And now I, Mormon, would that ye should know that the people had multiplied, insomuch that they were spread upon all the face of the land, and that they had become exceedingly rich, because of their prosperity in Christ.  23.이제 나 몰몬은 너희가 이 백성들이 심히 번성하여 온 땅에 퍼지게 되었고 그리스도로 인하여 번창한 이들이 크게 부하게 되었음을 알기 원하노라.
4니 1:24 그리고 이제 이 제이백일년에 그들 가운데 교만 중에 자고하게 된 자들이 생겨, 값비싼 의복을 입으며, 온갖 좋은 진주와, 세상의 좋은 것으로 꾸밈과 같은 일을 하기 시작하였더라.

 

 And now, in this two hundred and first year there began to be among them those who were lifted up in pride, such as the wearing of costly apparel, and all manner of fine pearls, and of the fine things of the world.  24.이백 일년에 이르러 백성들 중에 교만으로 부풀어 오른 자가 있어 값진 의복을 입으며 온갖 아름다운 진주로 장식을 하고 세상의 진귀한 것으로 치장하기 시작하더니,
4니 1:25 또 그때로부터 그들이 그들의 물건과 그들의 소유를 더 이상 공유하지 아니하였더라.

 

 And from that time forth they did have their goods and their substance no more common among them.  25.그때로부터 저들은 재물과 소유를 다시는 공유로 하지 아니하였고,
4니 1:26 또 그들이 여러 계급으로 나뉘기 시작하며, 이익을 얻기 위해 자기를 위하여 교회를 세우기 시작하며, 참된 그리스도의 교회를 부인하기 시작하였더라.

 

 And they began to be divided into classes; and they began to build up churches unto themselves to get gain, and began to deny the true church of Christ.  26.계급이 생기게 되어 교회를 짓되 저들의 이익을 위하여 짓기 시작하였으며 참된 그리스도의 교회를 부인하기 시작하여,
4니 1:27 또 이렇게 되었나니 이백십 년이 지나갔을 때 땅에는 많은 교회가 있었나니, 참으로 그리스도를 안다고 공언하는 교회가 많이 있었더라. 그러나 그럼에도 그들이 그의 복음의 대부분을 부인하였나니, 그 결과 그들이 온갖 간악함을 받아들이고, 합당하지 아니함으로 인하여 금지된 자에게 성스러운 것을 베풀었더라.

 

 And it came to pass that when two hundred and ten years had passed away there were many churches in the land; yea, there were many churches which professed to know the Christ, and yet they did deny the more parts of his gospel, insomuch that they did receive all manner of wickedness, and did administer that which was sacred unto him to whom it had been forbidden because of unworthiness.  27.이백 십년이 지나매 그리스도를 안다고 하면서도 그리스도의 복음을 거의 모두 부정하는 교회가 그 땅에 많이 세워져서 온갖 간악함을 받아들이며 합당하지 않아서 허용되지 않은 자들에게 성스러운 의식을 베풀었으니,
4니 1:28 그리고 이 교회가 죄악으로 인하여, 또 그들의 마음을 사로잡은 사탄의 권능으로 인하여 심히 번성하였더라.

 

 And this church did multiply exceedingly because of iniquity, and because of the power of Satan who did get hold upon their hearts.  28.이러한 교회가 그 간악함과 또한 저들의 마음을 사로잡은 사탄의 권세로 인하여 크게 번창하였고,
4니 1:29 그리고 또 그리스도를 부인하는 또 다른 교회가 있었으니, 그들은 참된 그리스도의 교회를 이들의 겸손함과 그리스도를 믿는 이들의 믿음으로 인하여 핍박하고, 또 이들 중에 이루어지는 많은 기적으로 인하여 이들을 멸시하였더라.

 

 And again, there was another church which denied the Christ; and they did persecute the true church of Christ, because of their humility and their belief in Christ; and they did despise them because of the many miracles which were wrought among them.  29.그리스도를 부인하는 또 다른 교회가 있었으니, 저들은 그리스도를 믿어 겸손해진 참된 교회를 핍박하였고, 많은 기적을 행한다 하여 마구 논박하며,
4니 1:30 그리하여 그들은 이들과 함께 머물고 있는 예수의 제자들에게 권력과 권세를 행사하여 저들을 옥에 던져 넣었으나, 저들 안에 있는 하나님의 말씀의 권능으로 말미암아 옥들이 둘로 갈라지매, 저들이 나아가 그들 가운데 큰 기적들을 행하였더라.

 

 Therefore they did exercise power and authority over the disciples of Jesus who did tarry with them, and they did cast them into prison; but by the power of the word of God, which was in them, the prisons were rent in twain, and they went forth doing mighty miracles among them.  30.참된 교회에 함께하는 예수의 제자들에게 권력과 권세를 행사하여 저들을 옥에 가두었으나, 저들이 지닌 하나님의 말씀의 권세로 인하여 감옥은 깨어졌고 저들이 나아가 무리에게 큰 기적을 행하여 보이니라.
4니 1:31 그러나 이 모든 기적에도 불구하고, 백성들은 그 마음을 완악하게 하고, 예수의 말씀대로 예루살렘에 있던 유대인들이 예수를 죽이기를 구한 것같이 저들을 죽이기를 구하였더라.

 

 Nevertheless, and notwithstanding all these miracles, the people did harden their hearts, and did seek to kill them, even as the Jews at Jerusalem sought to kill Jesus, according to his word.  31.이같이 저들이 기적을 행하여 보이나 백성들은 마음을 강퍅하게 먹고 예수가 이르신 대로 그를 죽이려던 예루살렘의 유대인들같이 저들을 죽이려 하여,
4니 1:32 이에 그들이 저들을 불 풀무에 던져 넣었으나, 저들이 아무 해도 입지 않고 나아왔더라.

 

 And they did cast them into furnaces of fire, and they came forth receiving no harm.  32.저들을 불 아궁이에 던지나 해를 입지 않고 나아오며,
4니 1:33 또한 저들을 들짐승의 굴에 던져 넣었으나, 저들이 어린아이가 어린 양과 더불어 장난함같이 들짐승들과 더불어 장난하고, 아무 해도 받지 않고 그들 중에서 나아왔더라.

 

 And they also cast them into dens of wild beasts, and they did play with the wild beasts even as a child with a lamb; and they did come forth from among them, receiving no harm.  33.저들을 야수의 굴에 던지나 어린 아이가 젖먹이 양과 더불어 놀듯 야수와 더불어 놀다가 해를 입지 않고 나아오니라.
4니 1:34 그럼에도 불구하고 백성들은 그 마음을 완악하게 하였으니, 이는 그들이 많은 제사들과 거짓 선지자들에게 이끌려 많은 교회를 짓고, 온갖 죄악을 행하게 되었음이라. 또 그들이 예수의 백성을 쳤으나, 예수의 백성은 도로 치지 아니하였으니, 이같이 그들이 매년 믿지 않음과 간악함 중에 빠져 들어가, 이윽고 이백삼십 년이 지나기에 이르렀더라.

 

 Nevertheless, the people did harden their hearts, for they were led by many priests and false prophets to build up many churches, and to do all manner of iniquity. And they did smite upon the people of Jesus; but the people of Jesus did not smite again. And thus they did dwindle in unbelief and wickedness, from year to year, even until two hundred and thirty years had passed away.  34.이와 같음에도 불구하고 백성들은 마음을 강퍅하게 먹어 많은 제사와 거짓 선지자들에게 이끌려 교회를 많이 짓고 온갖 간악한 일을 행하면서 예수의 백성들을 치나 예수의 백성들은 저들을 대적하여 마주치지 아니하였으니 이같이 불신앙과 완악함에 빠져 한 해 한 해를 지내는 중에 이백 삼십년이 지나더라.
4니 1:35 그리고 이제 이렇게 되었나니 이해, 곧 제이백삼십일년에 백성 가운데 큰 나뉨이 있었더라.

 

 And now it came to pass in this year, yea, in the two hundred and thirty and first year, there was a great division among the people.  35.이 해 곧 이백 삼십 일년에 이르러 백성들이 크게 나뉘었으니,
4니 1:36 이에 이렇게 되었나니 이 해에 니파이인이라 일컫는 한 백성이 일어났으니, 이들은 그리스도를 참되게 믿는 자들이었으며, 이들 중에는 레이맨인들이 야곱인이라, 또 요셉인이라, 또 조램인이라 일컫는 자들이 있었더라.

 

 And it came to pass that in this year there arose a people who were called the Nephites, and they were true believers in Christ; and among them there were those who were called by the Lamanites-Jacobites, and Josephites, and Zoramites;  36.이 해에 일어선 백성중 니파이인이라 불리웠던 백성들은 참되게 그리스도를 믿는 자들이었더라. 그 중에는 레이맨인들이 일컬어 야곱인, 요셉인, 조램인이라 하는 백성들이 있었느니라.
4니 1:37 그러므로 그리스도를 참되게 믿는 자들과 그리스도를 참되게 예배하는 자들은 (이들 중에는 머물기로 된 예수의 세 제자가 있었더라) 니파이인, 그리고 야곱인, 그리고 요셉인, 그리고 조램인이라 일컬어졌더라.

 

 Therefore the true believers in Christ, and the true worshipers of Christ, (among whom were the three disciples of Jesus who should tarry) were called Nephites, and Jacobites, and Josephites, and Zoramites.  37.그러므로 예수 그리스도를 참되게 믿고 예배하는 자(살아 남게 된 예수의 세 제자가 있었더라)들은 니파이인, 야곱인, 요셉인, 조램인이라 일컬어졌고,
4니 1:38 또 이렇게 되었나니 복음을 저 버린 자들은 레이맨인이라, 또 레뮤엘인이라, 또 이스마엘인이라 일컬어졌으니, 이들은 믿지 않음에 빠져 든 것이 아니요, 고의로 그리스도의 복음을 거역한 것이라, 또 그들의 조상들이 처음부터 믿지 않음에 빠져든 것같이 그들은 그 자녀들을 가르쳐 믿지 않게 하였도다.

 

 And it came to pass that they who rejected the gospel were called Lamanites, and Lemuelites, and Ishmaelites; and they did not dwindle in unbelief, but they did wilfully rebel against the gospel of Christ; and they did teach their children that they should not believe, even as their fathers, from the beginning, did dwindle.  38.복음을 거역한 자들은 레이맨인, 레뮤엘인, 이스마엘인이라 일컬어졌으니, 이들은 불신앙에 빠진 것이 아니요 고의로 그리스도의 복음을 거역한 것이라. 저들은 자녀들에게 그 조상들이 태초로부터 차차 불신앙에 빠지게된 것같이 가르쳐 그리스도의 복음을 믿지 않게 하였으니,
4니 1:39 또 이는 처음에 그러하였던 것같이 그들의 조상들의 간악함과 가증함으로 인함이라. 이에 그들은 레이맨인들이 처음부터 니파이의 자손을 미워하도록 가르침을 받은 것같이 하나님의 자녀들을 미워하도록 가르침을 받았느니라.

 

 And it was because of the wickedness and abomination of their fathers, even as it was in the beginning. And they were taught to hate the children of God, even as the Lamanites were taught to hate the children of Nephi from the beginning.  39.이는 저들의 조상이 태초에도 그러하였듯이 간악하고 가증하였음이라. 저들은 레이맨인들이 처음부터 니파이인들을 증오하도록 가르쳐진 것같이 하나님의 자녀들을 증오하도록 가르쳐 졌음이라.
4니 1:40 또 이렇게 되었나니 이백사십사 년이 지났고, 백성들의 제반사가 이러하였으며, 또 백성 중 보다 간악한 부류가 점점 강하여져서, 하나님의 백성보다도 그 수효가 심히 더 많아졌더라.

 

 And it came to pass that two hundred and forty and four years had passed away, and thus were the affairs of the people. And the more wicked part of the people did wax strong, and became exceedingly more numerous than were the people of God.  40.이백 사십 사년이 지나매 백성들의 모양이 이러하였고 백성들이 대부분 간악하여져서 하나님의 백성들 보다도 그 수효가 심히 많았으며,
4니 1:41 또 그들은 여전히 계속하여 자기들을 위하여 교회를 세우며, 온갖 귀한 것으로 교회를 장식하였으니, 이같이 이백오십 년이 지나고, 또 이백육십 년도 지나갔더라.

 

 And they did still continue to build up churches unto themselves, and adorn them with all manner of precious things. And thus did two hundred and fifty years pass away, and also two hundred and sixty years.  41.쉬지 않고 자기들을 위하여 교회를 지으며, 진귀한 것으로 치장을 하였으니, 이백 오십년과 이백 육십년이 이러한 가운데 지났고,
4니 1:42 또 이렇게 되었나니 백성 중 간악한 부류들이 또다시 개다이앤톤의 은밀한 맹세와 결사를 세우기 시작하였더라.

 

 And it came to pass that the wicked part of the people began again to build up the secret oaths and combinations of Gadianton.  42.간악한 백성들은 또다시 개다이앤톤의 은밀한 맹약과 결사를 다시 세우기 시작하였으며,
4니 1:43 또 니파이 백성이라 일컬어지는 백성들도 그 심히 큰 부로 인하여 그 마음이 교만하여져서, 그들의 형제 레이맨인들처럼 허황되어졌더라.

 

 And also the people who were called the people of Nephi began to be proud in their hearts, because of their exceeding riches, and become vain like unto their brethren, the Lamanites.  43.니파이인이라 일컬어지는 백성들마저 그 많은 부로 인하여 마음에 교만을 품기 시작하여 저들의 형제인 레이맨인들과 같이 헛된 마음을 먹었으니,
4니 1:44 그리고 이때로부터 제자들은 세상의 죄로 인하여 슬퍼하기 시작하였더라.

 

 And from this time the disciples began to sorrow for the sins of the world.  44.이때부터 그 제자들은 세상의 죄를 염려하기 시작하였고,
4니 1:45 또 이렇게 되었나니 삼백 년이 지나매, 니파이 백성과 레이맨인들이 모두 하나같이 심히 간악하여졌더라.

 

 And it came to pass that when three hundred years had passed away, both the people of Nephi and the Lamanites had become exceedingly wicked one like unto another.  45.삼백년이 지나매 니파이 백성들이거나 레이맨 백성들이거나를 막론하고 모두 하나같이 심히 간악하여 졌으며,
4니 1:46 또 이렇게 되었나니 개다이앤톤 도적들이 온 지면에 퍼져, 예수의 제자들 외에는 의로운 자가 하나도 없었으며, 그들은 금과 은을 풍성하게 저축해 두고, 온갖 물품으로 서로 무역하였더라.

 

 And it came to pass that the robbers of Gadianton did spread over all the face of the land; and there were none that were righteous save it were the disciples of Jesus. And gold and silver did they lay up in store in abundance, and did traffic in all manner of traffic.  46.개다이앤톤 도적단이 온 땅에 퍼지매 예수의 제자 말고는 의로운 자가 없었고 저들은 금은을 창고에 풍성하게 쌓아 두고 온갖 방법으로 여러 가지를 서로 교환하였더라.
4니 1:47 또 이렇게 되었나니 삼백오 년이 지나간 후에, (백성들은 여전히 간악한 가운데 머물러 있었느니라) 아모스가 죽고, 그의 아우 앰마론이 그의 대신에 기록을 계속하였더라.

 

 And it came to pass that after three hundred and five years had passed away, (and the people did still remain in wickedness) Amos died; and his brother, Ammaron, did keep the record in his stead.  47.삼백 오년이 지나매(백성들은 이때까지 그대로 간악하였느니라) 아모스가 죽었고, 그의 아우 앰마론이 그의 뒤를 이어 기록을 맡았으며,
4니 1:48 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 삼백이십 년이 지났을 때, 앰마론이 성신의 강권하심을 받고, 성스러운 기록을 감추었으니 - 곧 그리스도께서 오신 때로부터 제삼백이십년이 되는 해에 이르기까지 - 참으로 거룩한 바 대대로 전달되어 내려온 모든 성스러운 기록이라.

 

 And it came to pass that when three hundred and twenty years had passed away, Ammaron, being constrained by the Holy Ghost, did hide up the records which were sacred-yea, even all the sacred records which had been handed down from generation to generation, which were sacred-even until the three hundred and twentieth year from the coming of Christ.  48.삼백 이십년이 지나매 앰마론이 성령을 통하여 명을 받고 주가 오신 후 삼백 이십년에 이르기까지 대대로 전해져 내려온 성스러운 기록을 모두 감추었으니,
4니 1:49 이에 그가 기록을 주께 감추었나니, 이는 주의 약속과 예언대로 그 기록이 야곱 집의 남은 자들에게로 다시 나아오게 하려 함이라. 앰마론의 기록의 끝이 이와 같으니라.

 

 And he did hide them up unto the Lord, that they might come again unto the remnant of the house of Jacob, according to the prophecies and the promises of the Lord. And thus is the end of the record of Ammaron.  49.또한 주가 예언하시고 약속하신 대로 이 기록들이 야곱의 집의 잔류민들에게 전해지게 하려 저가 이 기록들을 주께 감추었느니라. 이것이 앰마론의 기사의 끝이니라.
