 And there was no contention among the people in the forty and fourth year; neither was there much contention in the forty and fifth year.  3:2.치세 사십 사년에도 백성들 간에 불화가 없었고, 사십 오년에도 큰 불화는 없었으나,
힐 3:3 그러나 이렇게 되었나니 제사십육년에 실로 많은 다툼과 수많은 불화가 있어, 심히 많은 자들이 그 땅을 기업으로 얻고자 제이라헤믈라 땅을 떠나 북방 땅으로 나아갔더라.

 

 And it came to pass in the forty and sixth, yea, there was much contention and many dissensions; in the which there were an exceedingly great many who departed out of the land of Zarahemla, and went forth unto the land northward to inherit the land.  3:3.사십 육년에 이르러 많은 분쟁과 다툼이 일어, 많은 백성들이 북쪽땅에 거할 처소를 얻으려 제이라헤믈라를 떠나가,
힐 3:4 이에 그들은 심히 먼 거리를 여행하여 이윽고 큰 호수들과 많은 강들에 이르렀더라.

 

 And they did travel to an exceedingly great distance, insomuch that they came to large bodies of water and many rivers.  3:4.아주 멀리 나아가 큰 호수와 강이 많은 땅에 이르러,
힐 3:5 그뿐 아니라 참으로 그들은 그 땅의 모든 지역에 흩어져 나아가되, 무릇 이전에 그 땅을 기업으로 받았던 수많은 주민들로 인하여 황폐하게 되지 아니하고, 수목이 없어지게 되지 아니한 모든 지역으로 나아갔더라.

 

 Yea, and even they did spread forth into all parts of the land, into whatever parts it had not been rendered desolate and without timber, because of the many inhabitants who had before inherited the land.  3:5.황무지가 되지 않은 땅을 골라 입주하였으되 재목으로 쓸 나무가 없었으니, 이는 이전에 그 땅에 많은 주민들이 있었기 때문이더라.
힐 3:6 그리고 이제 수목에 관한 것 말고는 그 땅의 아무 지역도 황폐하지 않았으나, 이전에 그 땅에 거했던 백성들의 멸망이 컸음으로 인하여 그 땅을 황무하다 하였더라.

 

 And now no part of the land was desolate, save it were for timber; but because of the greatness of the destruction of the people who had before inhabited the land it was called desolate.  3:6.다만 재목이 없었을 뿐 황폐해진 땅은 없었으나, 이전에 거하던 주민들의 패망이 극심하여 그 땅을 황무지라 하였으며,
힐 3:7 또 지면에 수목이 조금밖에 없었으나, 그럼에도 불구하고 나아간 백성들은 시멘트를 다루는 데 심히 능숙하게 된지라. 그러므로 그들이 시멘트로 집을 짓고 그 안에 거하였더라.

 

 And there being but little timber upon the face of the land, nevertheless the people who went forth became exceedingly expert in the working of cement; therefore they did build houses of cement, in the which they did dwell.  3:7.지면에 수목이 희소하여 이곳에 도착한 백성들은 시멘트를 능란하게 다루게 된지라 시멘트로 집을 짓고 그 안에 거하였느니라.
힐 3:8 또 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 번성하고 퍼지며, 남방 땅으로부터 북방 땅으로 나아가며 퍼져, 이윽고 남쪽 바다에서 북쪽 바다까지, 서쪽 바다에서 동쪽 바다까지 온 지면을 덮기 시작하였더라.

 

 And it came to pass that they did multiply and spread, and did go forth from the land southward to the land northward, and did spread insomuch that they began to cover the face of the whole earth, from the sea south to the sea north, from the sea west to the sea east.  3:8.이들이 차차 번성하고 늘어나 남쪽에서 북쪽으로 뻗어갔고, 동 서 남 북으로 각각 바다에 이르기까지 온 땅을 차지하였으며,
힐 3:9 또 북방 땅에 있는 백성들은 장막과 시멘트 가옥에 거하면서, 무릇 지면에 움돋는 모든 나무를 자라게 두어, 시간이 지나면 그들의 가옥과, 참으로 그들의 성읍과 그들의 성전과 그들의 회당과 그들의 성소와 그들의 온갖 건물들을 지을 재목을 갖고자 하였더라.

 

 And the people who were in the land northward did dwell in tents, and in houses of cement, and they did suffer whatsoever tree should spring up upon the face of the land that it should grow up, that in time they might have timber to build their houses, yea, their cities, and their temples, and their synagogues, and their sanctuaries, and all manner of their buildings.  3:9.북쪽 땅에 거하는 자들은 천막이나 시멘트 가옥에 거하면서, 온갖 수목을 보호하여 장차 저들의 가옥과 성읍과 성전과 회당과 성소를 재목으로 지으려 하였고,
힐 3:10 또 이렇게 되었나니 북방 땅에 재목이 심히 귀하였던지라, 그들이 배 편으로 많이 보내었더라.

 

 And it came to pass as timber was exceedingly scarce in the land northward, they did send forth much by the way of shipping.  3:10.북쪽 땅에 재목이 귀한지라, 배로 재목을 날라왔으니,
힐 3:11 이에 이같이 그들이 북방 땅에 있는 백성들로 하여금 능히 목재와 시멘트로 많은 성읍을 건축할 수 있게 하였더라.

 

 And thus they did enable the people in the land northward that they might build many cities, both of wood and of cement.  3:11.이렇게 북쪽 땅의 주민들은 목재와 시멘트를 사용하여 많은 성읍을 세울 수 있었더라.
힐 3:12 또 이렇게 되었나니 출생으로는 레이맨인인 암몬 백성 중에서도 이 땅으로 나아간 자들이 많았더라.

 

 And it came to pass that there were many of the people of Ammon, who were Lamanites by birth, did also go forth into this land.  3:12.혈통으로는 레이맨인인 암몬 백성들도 이 땅으로 많이 옮겨 왔고,
힐 3:13 그리고 이제 이 백성 중 많은 자들이 이 백성의 행한 바에 대하여 적고 있는 기록이 많이 있어, 그 기록이 그에 관해 상세하고 분량 또한 매우 많았더라.

 

 And now there are many records kept of the proceedings of this people, by many of this people, which are particular and very large, concerning them.  3:13.이 백성들에 관한 특이하고 상세한 기사가 이 백성들의 손으로 기록되기는 하였으나,
힐 3:14 그러나 보라, 이 책에는 이 백성의 행한 바를, 참으로 레이맨인들과 니파이인들의 기사와 그들의 전쟁과 다툼과 불화와 그들의 전도와 그들의 예언과 그들의 해운과 그들의 선박 건조와 그들의 성전 건축과 회당과 그들의 성소의 건축과 그들의 의로움과 그들의 간악함과 그들의 살인과 그들의 도적질함과 그들의 약탈함과 온갖 가증한 일과 음행들을 백분의 일도 실을 수 없도다.

 

 But behold, a hundredth part of the proceedings of this people, yea, the account of the Lamanites and of the Nephites, and their wars, and contentions, and dissensions, and their preaching, and their prophecies, and their shipping and their building of ships, and their building of temples, and of synagogues and their sanctuaries, and their righteousness, and their wickedness, and their murders, and their robbings, and their plundering, and all manner of abominations and whoredoms, cannot be contained in this work.  3:14.보라 저들의 온갖 기사, 곧 레이맨인과 니파이인들의 사적, 이들의 전쟁, 불화, 분쟁, 복음의 전도, 예언, 선박 제조와 항해, 성전과 회당과 성소의 건축, 의로운 일, 간악한 일, 살인, 도둑질, 약탈, 온갖 가증한 일, 음행 들을 그 백분의 일도 낱낱이 그 책에 기록할 수 없었느니라.
힐 3:15 그러나 보라, 각양의 많은 책들과 많은 기록들이 있고 이들은 주로 니파이인들에 의해 기록되어 왔도다.

 

 But behold, there are many books and many records of every kind, and they have been kept chiefly by the Nephites.  3:15.그러나 보라 다양한 기록과 책들이 많았으니, 그것들은 주로 니파이인들에 의하여 보존되었고,
힐 3:16 또 이러한 것들은 니파이인들에 의하여 한 세대에서 다른 세대로 전해져 내려왔나니, 곧 그들이 범법에 빠져 살해당하며, 약탈당하며, 수색당하며, 내몰리며, 죽임당하며, 지면에 흩어지며, 레이맨인들과 섞여 더 이상 니파이인이라 일컬음을 받지 아니하기에 이르렀으니, 간악하고, 사납고, 흉포해져서, 참으로 곧 레이맨인이 되어 버렸음이라.

 

 And they have been handed down from one generation to another by the Nephites, even until they have fallen into transgression and have been murdered, plundered, and hunted, and driven forth, and slain, and scattered upon the face of the earth, and mixed with the Lamanites until they are no more called the Nephites, becoming wicked, and wild, and ferocious, yea, even becoming Lamanites.  3:16.이 기록과 책자는 니파이인들이 범법에 빠져 피살되며 약탈당하며 탐색당하여 추방되며, 살해당하며 온 지면에 흩어져 레이맨인들과 섞여 다시는 니파이인이라고 일컬어지지 아니할 때까지 또한 완악하고 거칠며 잔인해져서 정말 레이맨인처럼 되기 전까지는 대대로 니파이인들에게 전하여 졌던 것이니라.

 And now I return again to mine account; therefore, what I have spoken had passed after there had been great contentions, and disturbances, and wars, and dissensions, among the people of Nephi.  3:17.나는 다시 나의 기사를 기록하리니, 이는 니파이 백성들 간에 심한 불화와 소동과 전쟁과 분쟁이 있은 뒤의 기사라.
힐 3:18 판사 치세 제사십육년이 끝났느니라.

 

 The forty and sixth year of the reign of the judges ended;  3:18.판사치세 사십 육년이 끝나고 나서도,
힐 3:19 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 제사십칠년과 또한 제사십팔년에도 그 땅에 여전히 큰 다툼이 있었느니라.

 

 And it came to pass that there was still great contention in the land, yea, even in the forty and seventh year, and also in the forty and eighth year.  3:19.나라에는 심한 분쟁이 계속하였고, 치세 사십 칠년과 사십 팔년에 까지 파급되었으나,
힐 3:20 그럼에도 불구하고 힐라맨은 정의와 공평으로 판사직을 채웠나니, 참으로 그는 하나님의 율례와, 법도와, 계명을 지켜 준행하고, 끊임없이 하나님 보시기에 바른 일을 행하며, 그의 부친의 길을 따라 행하여 그 땅에서 번영하였더라.

 

 Nevertheless Helaman did fill the judgment-seat with justice and equity; yea, he did observe to keep the statutes, and the judgments, and the commandments of God; and he did do that which was right in the sight of God continually; and he did walk after the ways of his father, insomuch that he did prosper in the land.  3:20.힐라맨은 공평과 공의로 판사직을 수행하며 하나님의 계명과 법규와 계율을 힘써 지켰고, 주님이 보시기에 의로운 일을 끊임없이 행하며 그의 부친이 행한 대로 행하여 그 땅에서 번영하게 되었고,
힐 3:21 또 이렇게 되었나니 그에게 두 아들이 있어, 장자에게는 니파이라 하는 이름을 주었고, 막내에게는 리하이라 하는 이름을 주었더라. 이에 그들이 자라기 시작하면서 주를 섬겼더라.

 

 And it came to pass that he had two sons. He gave unto the eldest the name of Nephi, and unto the youngest, the name of Lehi. And they began to grow up unto the Lord.  3:21.그에게 두 아들이 있어 형을 니파이라 하고 그 아우를 리하이라 이름하였으니, 이들이 자라면서 주를 섬겼으며,
힐 3:22 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제사십팔년 말미에 니파이 백성 가운데 전쟁과 다툼들이 약간 그치기 시작하였더라.

 

 And it came to pass that the wars and contentions began to cease, in a small degree, among the people of the Nephites, in the latter end of the forty and eighth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.

 And it came to pass in the forty and ninth year of the reign of the judges, there was continual peace established in the land, all save it were the secret combinations which Gadianton the robber had established in the more settled parts of the land, which at that time were not known unto those who were at the head of government; therefore they were not destroyed out of the land.  3:23.판사치세 사십 구년에 그 땅에 다시 평화가 이루어졌으나, 도둑 개다이앤톤의 비밀결사가 주민이 많은 지역 도처에 뿌리를 폈으니, 그때까지 이들은 정부 지도자들에게 발각되지 아니하여 그 땅에 부지해 있었으며,
힐 3:24 또 이렇게 되었나니 이 같은 해에 교회가 심히 크게 번영하여, 수천 명이 교회에 가입하고 회개에 이르는 침례를 받았더라.

 

 And it came to pass that in this same year there was exceedingly great prosperity in the church, insomuch that there were thousands who did join themselves unto the church and were baptized unto repentance.  3:24.같은 해에 교회가 크게 번영한지라, 수천 명이 회개의 침례를 받고 교회에 가입하였고,
힐 3:25 또 교회의 번영이 심히 크고, 백성들에게 부어 주시는 복이 심히 많아, 대제사들과 교사들 스스로도 측량할 수 없이 놀랐더라.

 

 And so great was the prosperity of the church, and so many the blessings which were poured out upon the people, that even the high priests and the teachers were themselves astonished beyond measure.  3:25.교회가 크게 번영하고 백성들에게 내려진 축복이 심히 풍성한지라, 대제사와 교사들까지도 심히 놀라워 하였으니,
힐 3:26 또 이렇게 되었나니 주의 일이 번성하여 실로 많은 사람들에게, 곧 수만 명에게 침례를 주고 하나님의 교회에 합하게 하였더라.

 

 And it came to pass that the work of the Lord did prosper unto the baptizing and uniting to the church of God, many souls, yea, even tens of thousands.  3:26.주의 사업이 크게 번성하여 수만의 사람이 침례를 받고 하나님의 교회에 나아와 함께 단합하니라.
힐 3:27 그리하여 우리는 주께서 무릇 그 마음의 진실함으로 그의 거룩한 이름을 부를 모든 자에게 자비로우심을 알 수 있느니라.

 

 Thus we may see that the Lord is merciful unto all who will, in the sincerity of their hearts, call upon his holy name.  3:27.이와 같이 주님께서는 성실한 마음으로 주의 거룩하신 이름을 일컫는 자들을 긍휼히 여기심을 우리가 아나니,
힐 3:28 실로 이리하여 우리는 모든 이에게 하늘의 문이 열려 있음을 아노니, 곧 하나님의 아들이신 예수 그리스도의 이름을 믿을 자들에게라.

 

 Yea, thus we see that the gate of heaven is open unto all, even to those who will believe on the name of Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God.  3:28.하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도의 이름을 장차 믿게 될 모든 자에게까지 하늘의 문이 열려 있음을 우리는 아는도다.
힐 3:29 참으로 우리는 누구든지 하나님의 말씀을 붙잡을 수 있음을 아노니, 그 말씀은 살아 있고 능력이 있어, 악마의 모든 교활과 올무와 간계를 파하고, 그리스도의 사람을 협착하고 좁은 길로 인도하여, 악인들을 삼키기 위하여 예비된 저 영원한 비참의 심연을 건너게 하리로다 -

 

 Yea, we see that whosoever will may lay hold upon the word of God, which is quick and powerful, which shall divide asunder all the cunning and the snares and the wiles of the devil, and lead the man of Christ in a strait and narrow course across that everlasting gulf of misery which is prepared to engulf the wicked-  3:29.진정, 속히 이르시며 권세로 가득하시어 온갖 마귀의 간사와 교활과 간계를 파하시는 하나님의 말씀을 믿는 자를 모두 주가 인도하시어 간악한 자를 위해 마련된 끝없는 고난의 심연을 건너게 하시며 그리스도를 따르는 사람들을 곧고 좁은 길에 이르게 하시며,
힐 3:30 그리고 그들의 영혼, 곧 그들의 불멸의 영혼을 하늘나라에 계시는 하나님 우편에 이르게 하여, 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱과 우리의 모든 거룩한 조상들과 함께 앉게 하고, 다시는 나가지 않게 하리로다.

 

 And land their souls, yea, their immortal souls, at the right hand of God in the kingdom of heaven, to sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and with Jacob, and with all our holy fathers, to go no more out.  3:30.저들의 영, 곧 불사불멸의 영을 하늘나라 하나님 우편의 처소에 있게 하시어 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱과 또한 모든 우리의 의로운 조상들과 더불어 자리를 함께하여 다시는 떠나지 않게 하심을 우리가 아느니라.
힐 3:31 그리고 이 해에 제이라헤믈라 땅에서와 주변 모든 지역, 곧 니파이인들이 소유한 온 땅에 기뻐함이 계속되었더라.

 

 And in this year there was continual rejoicing in the land of Zarahemla, and in all the regions round about, even in all the land which was possessed by the Nephites.  3:31.이 해에 제이라헤믈라 땅과 그 주변 니파이인들이 소유한 땅 전역에 기쁨이 계속되었으며,
힐 3:32 또 이렇게 되었나니 제사십구년의 남은 기간에도 평화와 심히 큰 기쁨이 있었고, 또한 판사 치세 제오십년에도 역시 지속되는 평화와 큰 기쁨이 있더라.

 

 And it came to pass that there was peace and exceedingly great joy in the remainder of the forty and ninth year; yea, and also there was continual peace and great joy in the fiftieth year of the reign of the judges.  3:32.치세 사십 구년말도 화평과 크나큰 기쁨이 지속되었고, 판사치세 오십년까지도 심히 평화로우며 기쁨의 생활이 계속되었고,
힐 3:33 그리고 판사 치세 제오십일년에 역시 평화가 있었으나, 교만이 교회에 들어오기 시작하였으니 - 하나님의 교회 안으로 들어 온 것이 아니요, 스스로 하나님의 교회에 속한다 하는 자들의 마음에 들어 온 것이라 -

 

 And in the fifty and first year of the reign of the judges there was peace also, save it were the pride which began to enter into the church-not into the church of God, but into the hearts of the people who professed to belong to the church of God-  3:33.판사치세 오십 일년에도 나라안에 평화가 계속되었으나, 교만이 교회에 스며들기 시작하였으니, 하나님의 교회 안으로 스며드는 것이 아니요 하나님의 교회에 속한 자라 스스로 말하는 자들의 마음에 스며들음이라.
힐 3:34 이에 그들이 교만으로 자고하여져서, 많은 그들의 형제들을 핍박하기에 이르렀으니, 이제 이는 크나큰 악이라, 이로 인하여 백성 중 보다 겸손한 자들이 큰 핍박을 받고 많은 고난을 헤쳐 나아가게 되었더라.

 

 And they were lifted up in pride, even to the persecution of many of their brethren. Now this was a great evil, which did cause the more humble part of the people to suffer great persecutions, and to wade through much affliction.  3:34.저들이 교만으로 부풀어 올라 많은 형제를 핍박하였으니, 이는 크나큰 악마의 소행이라. 이로 인하여 겸손한 백성이 고난을 겪으며 크게 핍박을 당하였으나,
힐 3:35 그러할지라도 그들은 자주 금식하고 기도하여, 그 겸손한 중에 점점 더 강하여지고, 그리스도에 대한 신앙 안에서 점점 더 굳건하여져서 그 영혼을 기쁨과 위로로 가득 채우기에 이르렀고, 참으로 그 마음을 정결하게 함과 성결하게 되기에 이르렀나니, 이 성결하게 됨은 그들이 그 마음을 하나님께 드림으로 말미암아 오는 것이라.

 

 Nevertheless they did fast and pray oft, and did wax stronger and stronger in their humility, and firmer and firmer in the faith of Christ, unto the filling their souls with joy and consolation, yea, even to the purifying and the sanctification of their hearts, which sanctification cometh because of their yielding their hearts unto God.  3:35.고난을 받는 무리가 자주 금식하고 기도하여 겸손한 중에 더욱 강하게 되며 그리스도를 의지하는 신앙이 날로 굳건하여져서, 위안과 기쁨으로 가득하여지매 마음이 청결하며 성결하게 되니, 이는 오직 저희 마음을 하나님께 바침으로 말미암았음이라.
힐 3:36 또 이렇게 되었나니 제오십이년도 화평한 중에 끝났으되 오직 백성들의 마음에 심히 큰 교만이 들어왔으니, 이는 그들의 심히 큰 부와 그 땅에서 그들이 번영한 연고라, 또 그 교만이 날로 그들 위에 자랐더라.

 

 And it came to pass that the fifty and second year ended in peace also, save it were the exceedingly great pride which had gotten into the hearts of the people; and it was because of their exceedingly great riches and their prosperity in the land; and it did grow upon them from day to day.  3:36.치세 오십 이년도 역시 평화롭게 지나되 백성들의 마음에 스며든 교만이 크게 자랐으니, 이는 저들의 엄청난 재물과 땅의 번영으로 인함이라 실로 저들은 날로 번영하였더라.
힐 3:37 또 이렇게 되었나니 판사 치세 제오십삼년에 힐라맨이 죽고, 그의 장자 니파이가 그를 대신하여 다스리기 시작하니라. 또 이렇게 되었나니 그가 정의와 공평으로써 판사직을 채우되, 참으로 하나님의 계명을 지키며 그 부친의 길로 행하였더라.

 

 And it came to pass in the fifty and third year of the reign of the judges, Helaman died, and his eldest son Nephi began to reign in his stead. And it came to pass that he did fill the judgment-seat with justice and equity; yea, he did keep the commandments of God, and did walk in the ways of his father.  3:37.판사치세 오십 삼년에 힐라맨이 죽으매 그의 맏아들 니파이가 그 뒤를 이었고, 그가 또한 공평과 공의로써 판사직을 수행하면서 하나님의 계명을 지키며 그 부친이 행한 대로 행하더라.
