 The Nephites who believe Samuel are baptized by Nephi—Samuel cannot be slain with their arrows and stones—Some harden their hearts, and others see angels—The unbelievers say it is not reasonable to believe in Christ and his coming in Jerusalem.  And now, it came to pass that there were many who heard the words of Samuel, the Lamanite, which he spake upon the walls of the city. And as many as believed on his word went forth and sought for Nephi; and when they had come forth and found him they confessed unto him their sins and denied not, desiring that they might be baptized unto the Lord.  16:1.레이맨인 사뮤엘이 성벽 위에서 전한 말을 들은 자가 많았으매, 그 중 그의 말을 믿은 자들은 니파이를 찾아가, 저들의 죄를 부인하지 아니하고 모두 고백하며, 주 앞에 침례받기를 원하였고,

 But as many as there were who did not believe in the words of Samuel were angry with him; and they cast stones at him upon the wall, and also many shot arrows at him as he stood upon the wall; but the Spirit of the Lord was with him, insomuch that they could not hit him with their stones neither with their arrows.  16:2.사뮤엘의 말을 믿지 아니한 자들은 저에게 대노하여 성벽 위에 서있는 저에게 돌을 던지며 화살을 쏘았으나, 주의 영이 저와 함께 하시는지라 돌이나 화살이 모두 저에게 이르지 못하니라.
힐 16:3 이제 그들이 그를 맞히지 못하는 것을 보고, 그의 말을 믿는 자가 더욱 많더니, 이에 그들이 침례를 받기 위하여 니파이에게로 떠나갔더라.

 

 Now when they saw that they could not hit him, there were many more who did believe on his words, insomuch that they went away unto Nephi to be baptized.  16:3.이같이 백성들이 저를 해치지 못함을 보고 더 많은 무리가 사뮤엘의 말을 믿게 되어 침례받고자 니파이를 찾아 떠났으니,

 For behold, Nephi was baptizing, and prophesying, and preaching, crying repentance unto the people, showing signs and wonders, working miracles among the people, that they might know that the Christ must shortly come-  16:4.보라 이는 니파이가 백성들에게로 다니며, 곧 이르실 그리스도를 알게 하려 표적과 기사와 기적의 일을 행하면서 백성들에게 침례를 베풀고 예언하며 회개를 부르짖었음이라.

Telling them of things which must shortly come, that they might know and remember at the time of their coming that they had been made known unto them beforehand, to the intent that they might believe; therefore as many as believed on the words of Samuel went forth unto him to be baptized, for they came repenting and confessing their sins.

'had been' 을 '~었었다' 로 번역한 곳은 몰몬경 총 235구절 가운데 니후5:19, 야곱1:5, 모사23:30, 27:30, 앨17:4, 46:5, 53:11, 12, 21, 56:10, 47, 힐16:5, 3니6:18, 8:7, 이더14:21 등 15 구절이 전부이다.  나머지는 모두 과거형 또는 현재형으로 번역되었다.

  16:5.또한 저들에게 믿게 하려 전한 모든 것들이 이루어지는 날에 이미 모든 일들이 저들에게 알려졌음을 깨달아 기억하게 하려고 바로 이루어질 일들을 말하였음이라. 그러므로 사뮤엘의 말을 믿은 자들은 모두 니파이에게로 나아가 회개하고 저들의 죄를 고백하며 침례받으려 하였더라.

 But the more part of them did not believe in the words of Samuel; therefore when they saw that they could not hit him with their stones and their arrows, they cried unto their captains, saying: Take this fellow and bind him, for behold he hath a devil; and because of the power of the devil which is in him we cannot hit him with our stones and our arrows; therefore take him and bind him, and away with him.  16:6.그러나 대부분은 사뮤엘의 말을 믿지 아니하여, 저들이 돌이나 화살로는 사뮤엘을 맞히지 못하겠음을 보고, 저들의 수령들에게로 가서 외쳐 이르기를, 저자를 잡아 결박하게 하라. 저에게 악마가 함께하여 저에게 있는 악마의 권세로 인하여 돌이나 화살로는 저를 맞히지 못하겠음이라. 그러니 저를 잡아 결박하여 끌어 내자 하고,
힐 16:7 이에 그들이 나아가 그 손을 그에게 대려 하매, 보라, 그가 성벽에서 몸을 아래로 던져 그들 땅을 벗어나 도망하여, 바로 자기 나라로 가서 자기 동족 가운데서 전파하며 예언하기 시작하였더라.

 

 And as they went forth to lay their hands on him, behold, he did cast himself down from the wall, and did flee out of their lands, yea, even unto his own country, and began to preach and to prophesy among his own people.  16:7.저들이 저에게로 나아가 손을 대려 하자 보라 저가 성벽에서 뛰어내려 저의 땅으로 돌아 가더니 저의 백성들 가운데서 복음을 전하며 예언하기 시작하였고,
힐 16:8 이에 보라, 니파이인들이 다시는 그에 대하여 더 듣지 못하였으니, 백성들의 제반사가 이러하였더라.

 

 And behold, he was never heard of more among the Nephites; and thus were the affairs of the people.  16:8.보라 그 후로 니파이인들은 사뮤엘의 소식을 더 듣지 못하였느니라. 니파이 백성들의 생활함이 이러하였더라.
힐 16:9 이에 이같이 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제팔십육년이 끝났느니라.

 

 And thus ended the eighty and sixth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.  16:9.니파이 백성들의 판사치세 팔십 육년이 이러한 가운데 끝나니라.
힐 16:10 또 이같이 판사 치세 제팔십칠년도 끝났으니, 백성들의 대부분은 여전히 교만과 간악함 중에 있었으되, 소수는 하나님 앞에 더욱 신중히 행하였더라.

 

 And thus ended also the eighty and seventh year of the reign of the judges, the more part of the people remaining in their pride and wickedness, and the lesser part walking more circumspectly before God.  16:10.판사치세 팔십 칠년도 이와같이 대부분의 백성들이 교만하고 간악한 중에 행하여 그 중 몇몇만이 더욱 성심으로 하나님 앞에 바르게 행하였고,
힐 16:11 또 판사 치세 제팔십팔년에도 형편이 이러하였더라.

 

 And these were the conditions also, in the eighty and eighth year of the reign of the judges.  16:11.판사치세 팔십 팔년도 그러하였으며,
힐 16:12 그리고 판사 치세 제팔십구년에도 백성들이 죄악 가운데 더욱 완악하게 되고, 하나님의 계명에 반하는 일을 점점 더 많이 행하기 시작한 것 외에는 백성들의 제반사가 거의 달라진 것이 없었더라.

 

 And there was but little alteration in the affairs of the people, save it were the people began to be more hardened in iniquity, and do more and more of that which was contrary to the commandments of God, in the eighty and ninth year of the reign of the judges.  16:12.백성들이 간악함으로 더욱 굳어지고, 하나님의 계명에 어긋나는 일을 더욱 더 행하였을 뿐, 판사치세 팔십 구년에도 백성들의 태도는 조금도 달라지지 아니하였고,
힐 16:13 그러나 판사 치세 제구십년에 이렇게 되었나니, 큰 표적과 기사가 백성에게 주어지고 선지자들의 말이 이루어지기 시작하였더라.

 

But it came to pass in the ninetieth year of the reign of the judges, there were great signs given unto the people, and wonders; and the words of the prophets began to be fulfilled.

  16:13.판사치세 구십년에는 큰 기사가 보이며 표적이 나타나, 선지자들의 전한 말들이 이루어지기 시작하였으니,
힐 16:14 또 천사들이 사람들, 지혜로운 자들에게 나타나 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소식을 그들에게 선포하매, 이 해에 경전의 말씀이 성취되기 시작하니라.

 

 And angels did appear unto men, wise men, and did declare unto them glad tidings of great joy; thus in this year the scriptures began to be fulfilled.  16:14.천사가 지혜로운 자들에게 크게 기쁜 소식을 전하매, 이 해에 들어 경전의 말씀이 성취되기 시작하니라.
힐 16:15 그럼에도 니파이인이나 레이맨인을 가리지 않고 신앙이 지극한 자들 외에는 모든 백성이 그 마음을 완악하게 하기 시작하며, 그들 스스로의 힘과 그들 스스로의 지혜를 의지하기 시작하여 이르되,

 

 Nevertheless, the people began to harden their hearts, all save it were the most believing part of them, both of the Nephites and also of the Lamanites, and began to depend upon their own strength and upon their own wisdom, saying:  16:15.그럼에도 니파이인이나 레이맨인을 막론하고 믿음이 지극한 자들 외에는 모두 마음이 강퍅하여져서, 저들 스스로의 힘을 믿고 저들의 지혜만을 믿어 이르기를,
힐 16:16 그처럼 많은 것 가운데 몇 가지를 그들이 옳게 알아맞혔을지 모르나, 보라, 우리가 알거니와 그들이 말한 이 크고 기이한 일들이 모두 다 이루어질 수는 없느니라 하였더라.

 

 Some things they may have guessed right, among so many; but behold, we know that all these great and marvelous works cannot come to pass, of which has been spoken.  16:16.많은 것 가운데 몇가지를 더러 바르게 맞힌 자도 있으나, 보라 우리가 알거니와 이 모든 크고 놀라운 일들이 말한 대로 결코 이루어지지는 아니하리라 하며,
힐 16:17 또 그들이 그들끼리 의논하며 쟁론하기 시작하여 이르되,

 

 And they began to reason and to contend among themselves, saying:  16:17.백성들은 저희끼리 논쟁하며 이르기를,
힐 16:18 그리스도라 하는 존재가 오리라 함은 이치에 닿지 아니하나니, 만일 그러하고, 그 말한 대로 그가 하나님의 아들, 하늘과 땅의 아버지일진대, 어찌하여 그가 예루살렘에 있을 자들에게와 마찬가지로 우리에게도 자기를 보이지 아니하겠느냐?

 

That it is not reasonable that such a being as a Christ shall come; if so, and he be the Son of God, the Father of heaven and of earth, as it has been spoken, why will he not show himself unto us as well as unto them who shall be at Jerusalem?

  16:18.그리스도가 오리라 함은 이치에 맞지 아니하나니, 만일 저가 하늘과 땅의 아버지이시며 하나님의 아들일진대 어찌하여 예루살렘에 거하는 자들에게 나타내어 보이심같이 이른대로 우리에게도 나타내 보이지 아니하리요?
힐 16:19 참으로 어찌하여 그가 예루살렘 땅에서와 마찬가지로 이 땅에서도 자기를 보이지 아니하겠느냐?

 

 Yea, why will he not show himself in this land as well as in the land of Jerusalem?  16:19.어찌하여 예루살렘 땅의 주민에게 보이심같이 이 땅에 친히 나타내어 보이지 아니하시겠느냐?
힐 16:20 그러나 보라, 우리는 이것이 우리 가운데가 아니라 먼 원방 땅 우리가 알지 못하는 땅에 이루어질 어떤 크고 기이한 일을 우리로 믿게 하려고 조상들에게서 전해져 내려온 간악한 전통임을 아노니, 그러므로 그들이 우리를 무지한 가운데 가두어 둘 수 있음은, 그 일의 참됨을 우리가 우리 눈으로 목격할 수 없음이니라.

 

 But behold, we know that this is a wicked tradition, which has been handed down unto us by our fathers, to cause us that we should believe in some great and marvelous thing which should come to pass, but not among us, but in a land which is far distant, a land which we know not; therefore they can keep us in ignorance, for we cannot witness with our own eyes that they are true.  16:20.보라 이는 다만 우리들에게 이를 일이 아니요 우리가 전혀 알지 못하는 원방 땅 백성들에게 이를, 크고 놀라운 일을 우리들에게 믿게 하려 조상들로부터 전해지는 그릇된 전언임을 우리가 아나니, 저들은 이같이 우리들이 우리의 눈으로 사실을 목격하지 못하는 것으로 하여 우리를 무지 몽매하게 하려 함이라.
힐 16:21 또 그들은 저 악한 자의 간교함과 불가사의한 술수로써 우리가 이해할 수 없는 어떤 큰 불가사의를 이룸으로, 계속하여 우리로 그들의 말을 좇는 종이 되게 하며 또한 그들을 좇는 종이 되게 하리니, 이는 우리가 그들에게 의지하여 말씀을 우리에게 가르치게 하고 있음이라. 또 우리가 스스로를 그들에게 내맡길진대, 그들이 우리의 평생에 이같이 우리를 무지함 속에 가두어 두리라 하였더라.

 

 And they will, by the cunning and the mysterious arts of the evil one, work some great mystery which we cannot understand, which will keep us down to be servants to their words, and also servants unto them, for we depend upon them to teach us the word; and thus will they keep us in ignorance if we will yield ourselves unto them, all the days of our lives.  16:21.또한 저들은 우리가 전혀 이해 할 수 없는 심히 기이한 일을 저들의 교활하고 간교한 술책으로 교묘히 이루어, 우리로 저들의 말을 좇는 종이 되게 하고 또한 우리를 종으로 삼으려 하는도다. 이는 우리가 저들에게 내어 맡겨 우리들에게 말씀을 전하여 가르치게 한 것이매 만일 우리가 그대로 버려 둘진대 우리의 평생을 두고 우리를 속이리라 하였고,
힐 16:22 또 이외에도 백성들이 어리석고 헛된 것을 그 마음에 많이 상상해 내었으며, 또 그들이 많이 평온하지 못하였으니 이는 사탄이 끊임없이 죄악을 행하도록 그들을 충동하였음이라. 참으로 그가 두루 다니며 온 지면에 소문과 분쟁을 퍼뜨렸으니, 이는 그가 선한 일과 장차 이를 일에 대하여 백성의 마음을 완악하게 하려 함이었더라.

 

 And many more things did the people imagine up in their hearts, which were foolish and vain; and they were much disturbed, for Satan did stir them up to do iniquity continually; yea, he did go about spreading rumors and contentions upon all the face of the land, that he might harden the hearts of the people against that which was good and against that which should come.  16:22.이들은 어리석고 헛된 더 많은 것들을 마음에 상상하여 마음을 어지럽혔으니, 사탄이 저들을 끊임없이 책동하였음이라. 참으로 사탄은 온 땅을 두루 다니며 헛된 소문을 퍼뜨리며 분쟁을 일삼았으니, 사람의 마음을 강퍅하게 하여 장차 이를 선한 모든 일을 거역하게 하려 함이었더라.
힐 16:23 또 주의 백성 가운데 이루어진 표적과 기사들과 또 그들이 행한 많은 기적에도 불구하고, 사탄이 온 지면에 있는 백성들의 마음을 크게 사로잡았더라.

 

 And notwithstanding the signs and the wonders which were wrought among the people of the Lord, and the many miracles which they did, Satan did get great hold upon the hearts of the people upon all the face of the land.  16:23.주가 백성들에게 표적과 기사를 내어 보이시며 많은 기적을 행하셨음에도 사탄은 지상에 거하는 백성들의 마음을 크게 사로 잡았으니,
힐 16:24 이에 이같이 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제구십년이 끝났느니라.

 

 And thus ended the ninetieth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.  16:24.니파이 백성들의 판사치세 구십년이 이같이 저물었고,
힐 16:25 이에 이같이 힐라맨과 그의 아들들의 기록에 의한 힐라맨서가 끝났느니라.

 

 And thus ended the book of Helaman, according to the record of Helaman and his sons.  16:25.힐라맨과 그 아들들의 기사에 의한 힐라맨서가 이것으로 끝나니라.
