Now this great loss of the Nephites, and the great slaughter which was among them, would not have happened had it not been for their wickedness and their abomination which was among them; yea, and it was among those also who professed to belong to the church of God. | 4:11.니파이 백성들의 간악함과 가증함이 아니었던들 이토록 막대한 손실을 입거나 크게 인명피해를 당하지 아니하였으리니, 이 간악함과 가증한 행위는 스스로 하나님의 교회에 속한 자라 말하는 무리에도 심하였더라. |

And it was because of the pride of their hearts, because of their exceeding riches, yea, it was because of their oppression to the poor, withholding their food from the hungry, withholding their clothing from the naked, and smiting their humble brethren upon the cheek, making a mock of that which was sacred, denying the spirit of prophecy and of revelation, murdering, plundering, lying, stealing, committing adultery, rising up in great contentions, and deserting away into the land of Nephi, among the Lamanites- | 4:12.이는 모두 저들의 마음이 교만했던 까닭이요, 저들이 몹시 부유했던 까닭이니, 가난한 자를 학대하여 주린 자와 음식을 나누지 아니하며, 벗은 자에게 의복을 나누어 주지 아니하고, 온유한 형제들의 뺨을 치고 성스러운 것을 조롱하며, 예언과 계시의 영을 부인하고, 살인, 약탈, 거짓말, 도둑질, 간음을 자행하며, 큰 분쟁을 일으키며, 니파이 땅으로 몰려가 레이맨인들과 연합하였음이라. |

And because of this their great wickedness, and their boastings in their own strength, they were left in their own strength; therefore they did not prosper, but were afflicted and smitten, and driven before the Lamanites, until they had lost possession of almost all their lands. | 4:13.이와 같은 저들의 간악함과 저들의 힘만을 믿는 자만으로인하여 온전히 저희들의 힘만을 의지하게 되었던지라, 저들은 번영하기는 커녕 고난을 당하며 레이맨인들에게 쫓겨 저들 소유의 땅을 거의 다 빼앗기게 되었던 것이라. |

But behold, Moronihah did preach many things unto the people because of their iniquity, and also Nephi and Lehi, who were the sons of Helaman, did preach many things unto the people, yea, and did prophesy many things unto them concerning their iniquities, and what should come unto them if they did not repent of their sins. | 4:14.그러나 보라 모로나이하는 이 간악한 백성들에게 많은 것을 전하여 가르쳤고 힐라맨의 아들 니파이와 리하이도 저들에게 많은 것을 가르쳤으며 백성들의 간악한 죄에 관하여 많은 것을 예언하였고 스스로의 죄를 회개하지 아니하면 어떠한 재앙이 닥치는가에 대하여 예언하였더라. |

And it came to pass that they did repent, and inasmuch as they did repent they did begin to prosper. | 4:15.백성들이 더러는 회개하였고, 회개하는 동안은 그만큼 번영하였으니, |

Therefore they did abandon their design to obtain the remainder of their lands, for so numerous were the Lamanites that it became impossible for the Nephites to obtain more power over them; therefore Moronihah did employ all his armies in maintaining those parts which he had taken. | 4:19.빼앗긴 땅을 탈환하려는 뜻을 던져 버리고 말았으니, 레이맨인들의 병력이 막대하여 니파이인들로서는 도저히 대세를 전복할 수 없는 지경에 이르렀음이라. 그리하여 모로나이하는 자기 군대로 다만 다시 찾은 땅만을 힘써 지키게 하였더라. |

And that they had altered and trampled under their feet the laws of Mosiah, or that which the Lord commanded him to give unto the people; and they saw that their laws had become corrupted, and that they had become a wicked people, insomuch that they were wicked even like unto the Lamanites. | 4:22.주님께서 백성들에게 전하여 가르치라 하신 모사이야의 율법을 저희 멋대로 변경하여 발 아래 짓밟아 왔음을 깨달았으며, 율법은 문란해져서 저들은 간악하게 되었으며, 마치 레이맨인들처럼 간악한 백성이 되었음을 깨달았느니라. |

And they saw that they had become weak, like unto their brethren, the Lamanites, and that the Spirit of the Lord did no more preserve them; yea, it had withdrawn from them because the Spirit of the Lord doth not dwell in unholy temples- | 4:24.비로소 저들은 저들의 형제 레이맨인들처럼 연약해졌음을 알았고, 주의 영이 다시는 저들을 지켜 주시지 아니하셨으니, 주의 영은 성스럽지 아니한 성전에는 거하지 아니하심에 저들에게서 떠나 버린 것이었더라. |

Therefore the Lord did cease to preserve them by his miraculous and matchless power, for they had fallen into a state of unbelief and awful wickedness; and they saw that the Lamanites were exceedingly more numerous than they, and except they should cleave unto the Lord their God they must unavoidably perish. | 4:25.그리하여 주는 비할 수 없이 놀라운 권세로 저들을 지켜 주시기를 그치셨으니, 이는 저들이 지극히 간악한 불신앙의 상태에 빠졌음이라. 저들은 마침내 레이맨인의 수효가 저들보다 견줄 수도 없을 만큼 많아 저들의 주 하나님께 의지하지 않고서는 필경 멸망당하리라는 사실을 깨달았으니, |

For behold, they saw that the strength of the Lamanites was as great as their strength, even man for man. And thus had they fallen into this great transgression; yea, thus had they become weak, because of their transgression, in the space of not many years. | 4:26.이는 보라, 개인으로 각각 견주어 보더라도 레이맨인들이 저들만큼 강건함을 알았음이라. 니파이인들이 크게 범법에 빠짐에, 오직 범법으로 인하여 불과 몇해 동안에 이같이 연약하여진 것이었더라. |
