And the people began to look with great earnestness for the sign which had been given by the prophet Samuel, the Lamanite, yea, for the time that there should be darkness for the space of three days over the face of the land. | 8:3.백성들은 레이맨인 예언자 사뮤엘이 전한 바, 땅에 사흘 동안 암흑이 덮이리라는 표적을 간절한 마음으로 기다리기 시작하였고, |

And there began to be great doubtings and disputations among the people, notwithstanding so many signs had been given. | 8:4.이미 그토록 많은 표적들이 보여졌음에도 백성들간에는 크게 의심하며 다툼이 일어났느니라. |

But behold, there was a more great and terrible destruction in the land northward; for behold, the whole face of the land was changed, because of the tempest and the whirlwinds, and the thunderings and the lightnings, and the exceedingly great quaking of the whole earth; | 8:12.보라 북방 땅은 그 패망이 더욱 크고 극심하였으니, 보라 태풍과 회오리 바람과 천둥 번개와 큰 지진으로 말미암아 지면이 모두 변하였느니라. |
| 3니 8:13 | 또 대로가 깨뜨려지고, 평평한 길들이 파괴되었으며, 여러 평탄한 곳들이 거칠게 되었더라. |

And the highways were broken up, and the level roads were spoiled, and many smooth places became rough. | 8:13.대로는 무너지고 평탄하던 길이 끊어졌으며 번번하던 곳이 거칠게 되었고, |

And many great and notable cities were sunk, and many were burned, and many were shaken till the buildings thereof had fallen to the earth, and the inhabitants thereof were slain, and the places were left desolate. | 8:14.크고 유명하던 많은 성들이 가라앉아 묻히고 불타 버렸으며, 땅이 몹시 요동함에 집들이 무너지며 주민들은 죽음을 당하였고 땅은 황폐하여졌으며, |
| 3니 8:15 | 또 남은 성읍들이 더러 있었으나 그 손상이 심히 컸고, 그 안에 죽임을 당한 자들이 많았더라. |

And there were some cities which remained; but the damage thereof was exceedingly great, and there were many in them who were slain. | 8:15.더러 성읍이 남은 것도 있었으나 몹시 허물어졌고, 그 주민들이 많이 죽었으며, |
| 3니 8:16 | 또 회리바람에 휩쓸려 간 자들이 더러 있었으되, 그들이 휩쓸려 갔다는 것만 알 뿐 그들이 어디로 갔는지 아무도 알지 못하였더라. |

And there were some who were carried away in the whirlwind; and whither they went no man knoweth, save they know that they were carried away. | 8:16.많은 사람들이 선풍에 휩쓸려 간지라, 다만 휩쓸려 갔다는 것을 알뿐, 어디로 갔는지 그 행방을 알지 못하였느니라. |
| 3니 8:17 | 또 이같이 태풍과 우레와 번개와 땅의 진동으로 말미암아 온 지면이 변형되었더라. |

And thus the face of the whole earth became deformed, because of the tempests, and the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the quaking of the earth. | 8:17.이같이 태풍과 천둥 번개와 지진으로 인하여 온 땅이 변하였으니, |
| 3니 8:18 | 또 보라 바위들은 둘로 갈라지고, 그것들이 온 지면 위에 깨어졌더라, 그 깨진 조각들과 그 이음새와 갈라진 틈이 온 땅 위에 발견되었더라. |

And behold, the rocks were rent in twain; they were broken up upon the face of the whole earth, insomuch that they were found in broken fragments, and in seams and in cracks, upon all the face of the land. | 8:18.보라 바위는 산산이 부서지고 온 지면에 흩어진지라. 아무데서나 부서진 바위 조각을 찾아 볼 수 있게 되었고, 바위에 틈이 생기며 금이 난것을 볼 수 있게 되었느니라. |
| 3니 8:19 | 또 이렇게 되었나니 우레와 번개와 폭풍과 태풍과 땅의 진동이 멎자 - 보라 이러한 일이 대략 세 시간 동안 계속되었으니, 어떤 이들은 시간이 더 길었다고도 하나, 이 크고 두려운 일들이 대략 세 시간 동안에 행하여졌더라 - 그러고 나서, 보라, 지면 위에 어둠이 있느니라. |

And it came to pass that when the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the storm, and the tempest, and the quakings of the earth did cease-for behold, they did last for about the space of three hours; and it was said by some that the time was greater; nevertheless, all these great and terrible things were done in about the space of three hours-and then behold, there was darkness upon the face of the land. | 8:19.천둥과 번개와 폭풍우와 태풍과 지진이 멎자, 보라 이러한 일이 무려 세시간 동안이나 계속되었으니, 혹 어떤이들은 세시간이 더 된다고도 하나 이 크고 두려운 일들이 세시간쯤에 행하여졌고 보라 그 다음에 지면에 암흑이 내려 덮이기 시작하였으니, |

And it came to pass that there was thick darkness upon all the face of the land, insomuch that the inhabitants thereof who had not fallen could feel the vapor of darkness; | 8:20.심히 짙은 암흑이 땅위에 덮이는지라, 주민들 중 죽지 아니한 자들이 이 암흑의 안개를 느낄 수 있었으며, |
| 3니 8:21 | 또 어둠으로 인하여 빛이 있을 수 없었으니 촛불이나 횃불도 있을 수 없었고 그들의 좋고 심히 마른 나무로도 불을 붙일 수 없었나니, 그리하여 전혀 아무 빛도 있을 수가 없었으며, |

And there could be no light, because of the darkness, neither candles, neither torches; neither could there be fire kindled with their fine and exceedingly dry wood, so that there could not be any light at all; | 8:21.암흑으로 인하여 빛이 전혀 빛을 발하지 못하는지라, 촛불이나 횃불이나 잘 마른 나무에 불을 질러도 전혀 빛을 내지 못하였고, |
| 3니 8:22 | 또 아무 빛이 보이지 아니하여 불빛이나 희미한 빛도, 해나 달이나 별들도 보이지 아니하였으니 이는 지면에 있는 어둠의 안개가 그처럼 심하였음이더라. |

And there was not any light seen, neither fire, nor glimmer, neither the sun, nor the moon, nor the stars, for so great were the mists of darkness which were upon the face of the land. | 8:22.지면에 덮힌 암흑의 안개가 심히 짙은지라 불빛이나 어스름한 빛이나 해나 달이나 별들조차 보이지 아니하였느니라. |
| 3니 8:23 | 또 이렇게 되었나니 빛이 보이지 아니하는 일이 사흘 동안 계속되매, 참으로 모든 백성 가운데 크게 애곡하는 일과 슬피 부르짖는 일과 우는 일이 그치지 아니하였나니, 참으로 그들에게 임한 어둠과 큰 멸망으로 인하여 백성들의 신음함이 컸더라. |

And it came to pass that it did last for the space of three days that there was no light seen; and there was great mourning and howling and weeping among all the people continually; yea, great were the groanings of the people, because of the darkness and the great destruction which had come upon them. | 8:23.이같이 전혀 빛이 보이지 않는 중에 사흘이 지나매 백성들은 그치지 아니하고 애통하며 울부짖으며 통곡하였고, 저들에게 임한 암흑과 패망이 끔찍하여 몹시 신음하였느니라. |
| 3니 8:24 | 이에 한 곳에서 그들의 부르짖는 소리가 들리니, 이르되, 오 이 크고 두려운 날 이전에 우리가 회개하였더라면, 그리하였더라면 우리의 형제들이 멸망을 면하였을 것이요 저 큰 성 제이라헤믈라 안에서 불타버리지 아니하였으리라 하더라. |

And in one place they were heard to cry, saying: O that we had repented before this great and terrible day, and then would our brethren have been spared, and they would not have been burned in that great city Zarahemla. | 8:24.이러한 가운데 한 처소에서 백성들이 소리쳐 이르기를, 오 우리가 이 크고 두려운 날이 이르기 전에 회개하였던들 우리 동포들이 목숨을 건졌을 것이요, 저 큰 성 제이라헤믈라와 더불어 불타 버리지 아니하였으리라 하였고, |
| 3니 8:25 | 또 다른 곳에서 그들의 부르짖고 애통하는 소리가 들려 이르되, 오 이 크고 두려운 날 이전에 우리가 회개하고, 선지자들을 죽이거나 돌로 치지 아니하고, 그들을 쫓아 내지 아니하였더라면, 그리하였더라면 우리의 어머니들과 우리의 아름다운 딸들과 우리의 자녀들이 멸망을 면하였을 것이요, 저 큰 성 모로나이하 안에 묻혀버리지 아니하였으리라 하였나니, 이같이 백성들의 슬피 부르짖음이 크고 참담하였더라. |

And in another place they were heard to cry and mourn, saying: O that we had repented before this great and terrible day, and had not killed and stoned the prophets, and cast them out; then would our mothers and our fair daughters, and our children have been spared, and not have been buried up in that great city Moronihah. And thus were the howlings of the people great and terrible. | 8:25.또 다른 처소에서 울부짖는 소리 있어 이르되, 우리가 이 크고 두려운 날이 이르기 전에 회개하고 예언자들을 죽이거나 돌로 치며 우리들 가운데서 쫓아 내지 아니 하였던들, 우리들의 모친과 귀여운 딸자식들와 어린이들이 목숨을 건져 저 큰 성 모로나이와 더불어 묻히지 아니하였으리라 하였으니, 이같이 백성들의 애통함이 크고 참담하더라. |
