I, Zeniff, having been taught in all the language of the Nephites, and having had a knowledge of the land of Nephi, or of the land of our fathers' first inheritance, and having been sent as a spy among the Lamanites that I might spy out their forces, that our army might come upon them and destroy them?ut when I saw that which was good among them I was desirous that they should not be destroyed.

 9:1.나 지니프는 온갖 니파이인들의 언어를 알며 우리 조상들의 첫 번 상속의 땅이었던 니파이 땅을 잘 알고 있어 첩자로 레이맨인들에게로 보내졌으니, 이는 우리 군대로 저들을 들이쳐서 멸해 버리고자 저들의 병력을 알아내기 위함이었더라. 그러나 내가 레이맨인들이 선을 행하는 것을 보고 애써 저들을 멸하지 못하게 하려 하였느니라.

 Therefore, I contended with my brethren in the wilderness, for I would that our ruler should make a treaty with them; but he being an austere and a blood-thirsty man commanded that I should be slain; but I was rescued by the shedding of much blood; for father fought against father, and brother against brother, until the greater number of our army was destroyed in the wilderness; and we returned, those of us that were spared, to the land of Zarahemla, to relate that tale to their wives and their children. 9:2.그리하여 나는 우리의 통치자가 레이맨인들과 협정을 맺기를 바라 광야에서 나의 형제들과 다투었으나, 우리의 통치자였던 자가 횡포하여 사람의 피에 기갈이 들린지라 나를 죽이라 명하였고, 크게 피 흘려 싸우는 동안에 나는 구출되었으니 아비는 아비를 대하여 형제는 형제를 서로 대적하여 우리 군사가 거의 다 광야에서 죽은지라, 목숨을 부지한 우리들 몇몇이 제이라헤믈라 땅으로 돌아가 이 일을 처자들에게 전하였으며, 
모사 9:3 그런데 그럼에도 나는 우리 조상들의 땅을 상속하려는 열의가 지나쳐, 그 땅을 소유하러 올라가기 원하는 자들을 모두 모아, 그 땅으로 올라가기 위하여 다시 광야로 우리의 여행을 시작하였느니라. 그러나 우리는 기근과 심한 고난으로 치심을 당하였나니, 이는 우리가 주 우리 하나님 기억하기를 더디 하였음이라.

 

 And yet, I being over-zealous to inherit the land of our fathers, collected as many as were desirous to go up to possess the land, and started again on our journey into the wilderness to go up to the land; but we were smitten with famine and sore afflictions; for we were slow to remember the Lord our God. 9:3.나는 그 때까지도 우리 조상들의 땅을 차지하려는 욕심이 지나쳐, 그 땅을 소유하겠다는 뜻을 가진 자들을 모두 모아 또다시 그 땅을 향하여 광야로 길을 떠났으나, 우리가 주 하나님 기억하기를 게을리 하였던지라, 기근과 심한 고난을 겪에 되었더라. 
모사 9:4 그럼에도 불구하고 광야에서 여러 날을 방황한 후에 우리는 우리 형제들이 죽임을 당했던 곳에 우리의 장막을 쳤나니, 이는 우리 조상들의 땅에 가까운 곳이더라.

 

 Nevertheless, after many days' wandering in the wilderness we pitched our tents in the place where our brethren were slain, which was near to the land of our fathers. 9:4.그럼에도 불구하고 우리는 여러날 동안 광야를 헤메다가 이전에 우리 형제들이 죽은 곳에 천막을 쳤으니, 우리 조상들의 땅에서 멀지 않은 곳이었더라. 
모사 9:5 그리고 이렇게 되었나니 내가 다시 나의 사람 넷과 함께 성으로 들어가서, 왕에게로 들어가 왕의 의향을 알고 혹 내가 나의 백성들과 더불어 들어가서 평안히 그 땅을 소유할 수 있는지 알고자 하였느니라.

 

 And it came to pass that I went again with four of my men into the city, in unto the king, that I might know of the disposition of the king, and that I might know if I might go in with my people and possess the land in peace. 9:5.내가 다시 사람 넷을 거느리고 왕의 거동을 살펴 내가 나의 백성들을 이끌고 그 땅에 조용히 입주할 수 있는지의 여부를 알아보려 성내로 들어가 왕 앞에 나아가니, 
모사 9:6 이에 내가 왕에게로 들어갔더니, 그가 나와 언약하여 내가 리하이 - 니파이 땅과 샤일롬 땅을 소유하도록 하였느니라.

 

 And I went in unto the king, and he covenanted with me that I might possess the land of Lehi-Nephi, and the land of Shilom. 9:6.내가 왕 앞에 이르매 그는 나와 언약하여 리하이-니파이 땅과 샤일롬 땅을 소유하게 하였고, 
모사 9:7 그리고 그가 또한 명하여 그의 백성들을 그 땅에서 떠나게 하매, 나와 나의 백성들이 그 땅에 들어가 그 땅을 소유하게 되었느니라.

 

 And he also commanded that his people should depart out of the land, and I and my people went into the land that we might possess it. 9:7.또한 그 땅에서 자기 백성들을 떠나라 명하여 나와 나의 백성들이 그 땅에 들어가 땅을 차지하게 되매, 
모사 9:8 이에 우리가 건물들을 지으며, 성의 벽 곧 참으로 리하이 - 니파이 성과 샤일롬 성의 벽을 중수하기 시작하였느니라.

 

 And we began to build buildings, and to repair the walls of the city, yea, even the walls of the city of Lehi-Nephi, and the city of Shilom. 9:8.우리가 그 곳에서 건물을 지으며 성벽을 수리하였으니, 곧 리하이-니파이 땅의 성벽과 샤일롬 땅의 성벽을 수리하였고, 
모사 9:9 그리고 우리는 참으로 온갖 종자를 가지고, 곧 옥수수와 밀과 보리의 종자를 가지고 또 니애스를 가지고 또 시움을 가지고 또 온갖 실과의 종자를 가지고 토지를 경작하기 시작하였나니, 이에 우리는 그 땅에서 번성하며 번영하기 시작하였느니라.

 

 And we began to till the ground, yea, even with all manner of seeds, with seeds of corn, and of wheat, and of barley, and with neas, and with sheum, and with seeds of all manner of fruits; and we did begin to multiply and prosper in the land. 9:9.땅을 경작하여 옥수수, 밀, 보리, 니애스, 시움 등 온갖 곡물과 온갖 과일을 재배하였고 우리가 그 땅에서 번성하며 번영하게 되었더라. 
모사 9:10 이제 레이맨 왕이 그 땅을 내어주어 우리로 그것을 소유하게 한 것은, 나의 백성을 속박으로 끌어들이려는, 그의 간사함과 간교함이었더라.

 

 Now it was the cunning and the craftiness of king Laman, to bring my people into bondage, that he yielded up the land that we might possess it. 9:10.그러나 우리에게 땅을 내어 주어 소유하게 한 것은 나의 백성들을 속박하려는 레이맨 왕의 계교요, 간사한 계책이었던지라, 
모사 9:11 그러므로 이렇게 되었나니, 우리가 십이 년 동안을 그 땅에 거한 후에 레이맨 왕이 불안해하기 시작하였으니, 어떻게라도 나의 백성이 강하여져, 그들이 저들을 이기고 저들을 속박으로 끌어들이지 못하게 될까 염려하였음이라.

 

 Therefore it came to pass, that after we had dwelt in the land for the space of twelve years that king Laman began to grow uneasy, lest by any means my people should wax strong in the land, and that they could not overpower them and bring them into bondage. 9:11.우리가 그 땅에 십 이년을 거하면서 강대해지매, 우리 백성들을 억압하여 속박함이 어렵지 않을까 하여 레이맨 왕은 불안해 하기 시작하더라. 
모사 9:12 이제 그들은 게으르고 우상을 섬기는 백성이었던지라. 그러므로 그들이 우리를 속박으로 끌어들이기 원했던 것은, 우리 손의 수고로 실컷 배불리려 하며, 참으로 우리 들판의 양 떼로 성찬을 벌이고자 함이었더라.

 

 Now they were a lazy and an idolatrous people; therefore they were desirous to bring us into bondage, that they might glut themselves with the labors of our hands; yea, that they might feast themselves upon the flocks of our fields. 9:12.또한 저들은 게으르며 우상을 숭배하는 백성이었던지라 우리를 속박하여 우리의 수고를 착취하며 들에 있던 우리의 가축을 먹어 치우기를 심히 원하였으므로, 
모사 9:13 그리하여 이렇게 되었나니 레이맨 왕이 그의 백성을 선동하여 나의 백성과 다투게 하기 시작한지라. 그러므로 이 땅에 전쟁과 다툼이 일어나기 시작하였느니라.

 

 Therefore it came to pass that king Laman began to stir up his people that they should contend with my people; therefore there began to be wars and contentions in the land. 9:13.레이맨 왕은 그의 백성들을 책동하여 나의 백성들과 다투게 하매 온 땅에 전쟁과 불화가 일었나니, 
모사 9:14 이는 니파이 땅에서의 나의 치세 제십삼년에, 멀리 샤일롬 땅 남쪽에서 나의 백성들이 그들의 양 떼를 먹이며 그것들에게 물을 주며 그들의 땅을 갈고 있을 때, 수많은 레이맨인의 한 무리가 그들을 습격하여 그들을 죽이며, 그들의 양 떼와 그들 밭의 옥수수를 빼앗기 시작하였음이라.

 

 For, in the thirteenth year of my reign in the land of Nephi, away on the south of the land of Shilom, when my people were watering and feeding their flocks, and tilling their lands, a numerous host of Lamanites came upon them and began to slay them, and to take off their flocks, and the corn of their fields. 9:14.내가 니파이 땅에서 나의 백성을 다스린 십 삼년째 해에 나의 백성들이 멀리 샤일롬 땅 남쪽 들에서 가축들에게 풀을 뜯기고 물을 먹이며 밭을 갈고 있을때, 수많은 레이맨 군사가 저들에게 덮쳐 살륙하며 저들의 가축과 들의 곡식을 탈취하는지라. 
모사 9:15 또한 이렇게 되었나니 붙잡히지 아니한 자들은 모두 니파이 성으로 도망하여, 나에게 보호를 요청하였느니라.

 

 Yea, and it came to pass that they fled, all that were not overtaken, even into the city of Nephi, and did call upon me for protection. 9:15.사로잡히지 아니한 백성들은 쫓겨 흩어지며 더러 니파이 성으로 달려와 나에게 보호를 청하매, 
모사 9:16 이에 이렇게 되었나니 내가 활과 화살과 검과 신월도와 곤봉과 물매와 우리가 고안해 낼 수 있었던 온갖 무기로 나의 백성들을 무장시켰으며, 그러고 나서 나와 나의 백성들은 레이맨인들을 대적하여 싸우러 나아갔더라.

 

 And it came to pass that I did arm them with bows, and with arrows, with swords, and with cimeters, and with clubs, and with slings, and with all manner of weapons which we could invent, and I and my people did go forth against the Lamanites to battle. 9:16.나는 나의 백성들을 활과 화살과 검, 신월도, 몽둥이, 투석기 등 우리가 생각해 낼 수 있던 온갖 전쟁 무기로 무장시켜 내가 지휘하여 백성들과 함께 레이맨인들을 대적하여 싸우려 나아갔더라. 
모사 9:17 참으로 주의 힘을 입고 우리가 레이맨인들을 대적하여 싸우러 나아갔으니, 이는 나와 나의 백성이 주께 간절히 부르짖어 그가 우리를 우리 원수들의 손에서 건져 주실 것을 구하였음이라. 이는 우리가 일깨움을 받아 우리 조상들을 건지신 일을 기억하였음이니라.

 

 Yea, in the strength of the Lord did we go forth to battle against the Lamanites; for I and my people did cry mightily to the Lord that he would deliver us out of the hands of our enemies, for we were awakened to a remembrance of the deliverance of our fathers. 9:17.이 때에 우리는 주의 힘을 의지하여 레이맨인들을 대적하여 싸움터에 임하였으니, 주님께서 우리 조상들을 구하신 일을 새삼스럽게 깨달아 나와 나의 백성들이 힘을 모아 우리를 원수의 손에서 구하여 주시도록 주님께 간구하였음이라. 
모사 9:18 이에 하나님이 우리의 부르짖음을 들으시고 우리의 기도에 응답하셨으며, 우리는 그의 힘을 입고 나아갔나니, 참으로 우리는 레이맨인들을 대적하여 나아가, 하루 낮과 하루 밤 동안에 삼천사십삼 명을 죽이되, 우리가 그들을 우리 땅에서 몰아내기까지 그들을 죽였느니라.

 

 And God did hear our cries and did answer our prayers; and we did go forth in his might; yea, we did go forth against the Lamanites, and in one day and a night we did slay three thousand and forty-three; we did slay them even until we had driven them out of our land. 9:18.이에 하나님께서 우리의 간구를 들으시고 우리의 기도에 응답하시매 우리가 주의 힘으로 나아갔고, 주의 힘으로 나아가 레이맨인들을 대적하여 한낮, 하루밤 동안에 레이맨인 삼천 마흔 세명을 죽였고, 마침내 저들을 우리 땅 밖으로 몰아 내었으며, 
모사 9:19 또 나 자신 친히 내 손으로 그들의 죽은 자들을 묻는 것을 도왔느니라. 그리고 보라, 우리의 형제 이백칠십구 명이 죽임을 당하여, 우리는 크게 슬퍼하고 애통하였느니라.

 

 And I, myself, with mine own hands, did help to bury their dead. And behold, to our great sorrow and lamentation, two hundred and seventy-nine of our brethren were slain. 9:19.나도 친히 저들의 시체 묻는 일을 도왔느니라. 그러나 보라 나의 형제 이백 일흔 아홉명이 죽음을 당하였으매, 슬프고 비통하였느니라.
