소개 1831년 5월 오하이오 주 톰슨에서 선지자 조셉 스미스를 통하여 주신 계시(교회사 1:173~174). 이 당시 동부 여러 주에서 이주하는 성도들이 오하이오에 도착하기 시작하였고, 그들의 정착지를 명확하게 조정해야 할 필요가 있게 되었다. 이 일은 특별히 감독의 직분에 속하는 것이었으므로 에드워드 파트리지 감독은 이 문제에 대한 가르침을 구하였고 선지자는 주께 물었다. Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Thompson, Ohio, May 1831. HC 1: 173—174. At this time the saints migrating from the eastern states began to arrive in Ohio, and it became necessary to make definite arrangements for their settlement. As this undertaking belonged particularly to the bishop’s office, Bishop Edward Partridge sought instruction on the matter, and the Prophet inquired of the Lord.

교성 51:1 나의 말을 들으라, 주 너희 하나님이 이르노라. 내가 나의 종 에드워드 파트리지에게 말하고 그에게 몇 가지 지시를 주리니, 이는 이 백성을 조직하는 방법에 대하여 그가 몇 가지 지시를 받음이 반드시 필요함이니라. HEARKEN unto me, saith the Lord your God, and I will speak unto my servant Edward Partridge, and give unto him directions; for it must needs be that he receive directions how to organize this people.
교성 51:2 이는 그들이 나의 율법에 따라 조직됨이 반드시 필요함이라. 만일 그렇지 아니하면, 그들은 끊어지게 되리라. For it must needs be that they be organized according to my laws; if otherwise, they will be cut off.
교성 51:3 그런즉 나의 종 에드워드 파트리지와 그가 택한 자들 곧 내가 기쁘게 여기는 자들은 이 백성에게 그 가족에 따라, 그 형편과 부족과 필요에 따라, 모든 사람에게 균등하게 그들의 몫을 정해 줄지어다. Wherefore, let my servant Edward Partridge, and those whom he has chosen, in whom I am well pleased, appoint unto this people their portions, every man equal according to his family, according to his circumstances and his wants and needs.
교성 51:4 그리고 나의 종 에드워드 파트리지는 어느 사람에게 그의 몫을 지정해 줄 때에 그에게 그의 몫을 보증하는 증서를 주어, 그가 범법하여 교회에 속함이 합당한 줄로 여겨지지 아니함이 교회의 율법과 성약에 따라 교회의 동의로 인정될 때까지, 교회 안에서 이 권리와 이 기업을 유지하게 할지어다. And let my servant Edward Partridge, when he shall appoint a man his portion, give unto him a writing that shall secure unto him his portion, that he shall hold it, even this right and this inheritance in the church, until he transgresses and is not accounted worthy by the voice of the church, according to the laws and covenants of the church, to belong to the church.
교성 51:5 그리고 만일 그가 범법하여 교회에 속함이 합당한 줄로 여겨지지 아니하면, 그는 나의 교회의 가난한 자와 궁핍한 자를 위하여 자신이 감독에게 헌납한 그 몫을 요구할 권리가 없으리니, 그러므로 그는 그 예물을 보유하지 못할 것이요, 단지 자신에게 양도된 몫에 대해서만 권리를 요구할 수 있을 것이니라. And if he shall transgress and is not accounted worthy to belong to the church, he shall not have power to claim that portion which he has consecrated unto the bishop for the poor and needy of my church; therefore, he shall not retain the gift, but shall only have claim on that portion that is deeded unto him.
교성 51:6 그리고 이같이 그 땅의 법에 따라 만사를 분명하게 해 둘지니라. And thus all things shall be made sure, according to the laws of the land.
교성 51:7 그리고 이 백성에게 속한 것은 이 백성에게 지정해 줄지어다. And let that which belongs to this people be appointed unto this people.
교성 51:8 그리고 이 백성에게 남게 되는 돈은 - 이 백성에게 대리인 한 사람을 지정하여 그 돈을 가지고 이 백성의 부족분에 따라 식량과 의복을 마련하게 할지어다. And the money which is left unto this people—let there be an agent appointed unto this people, to take the money to provide food and raiment, according to the wants of this people.
교성 51:9 그리고 모든 사람은 정직하게 대하며, 이 백성 가운데서 평등하게 되고, 평등하게 받을지어다. 그리하여 내가 너희에게 명한 대로 너희가 하나가 될지어다. And let every man deal honestly, and be alike among this people, and receive alike, that ye may be one, even as I have commanded you.
교성 51:10 그리고 이 백성에게 속한 것을 취하여 다른 교회의 백성에게 주지 않게 할지어다. And let that which belongeth to this people not be taken and given unto that of another church.
교성 51:11 그런즉 만일 다른 교회가 이 교회에게서 돈을 받으려 하거든, 그들은 그들이 합의하는 대로 이 교회에 다시 갚을지니, Wherefore, if another church would receive money of this church, let them pay unto this church again according as they shall agree;
교성 51:12 이 일은 교회의 동의로 임명될 감독 또는 대리인을 통하여 이루어져야 하느니라. And this shall be done through the bishop or the agent, which shall be appointed by the voice of the church.
교성 51:13 그리고 또, 감독은 이 교회에 창고 하나를 지정할지어다. 그리하여 백성의 부족을 채우기에 필요한 것보다 더 많은 것은 모두 돈으로나 음식으로나 감독의 손에 보관할지어다. And again, let the bishop appoint a storehouse unto this church; and let all things both in money and in meat, which are more than is needful for the wants of this people, be kept in the hands of the bishop.
교성 51:14 그는 또한 이 업무를 수행하게 될 것인즉, 자기 자신에게 필요한 몫과 자기 가족에게 필요한 몫을 남겨 둘지어다. And let him also reserve unto himself for his own wants, and for the wants of his family, as he shall be employed in doing this business.
교성 51:15 그리고 이같이 나는 이 백성에게 나의 율법에 따라 그들 자신을 조직하는 특권을 부여하노라. And thus I grant unto this people a privilege of organizing themselves according to my laws.
교성 51:16 또 나 주가 달리 그들을 위하여 마련하고 그들에게 이 곳에서 떠날 것을 명할 때까지, 나는 잠시 동안 그들에게 이 땅을 성별하여 주노라. And I consecrate unto them this land for a little season, until I, the Lord, shall provide for them otherwise, and command them to go hence;
교성 51:17 그러나 그 시와 그 날은 그들에게 주어지지 아니하였으니, 그런즉 그들은 여러 해 동안 있을 것같이 이 땅에서 활동할지니라. 이것이 돌이켜 그들에게 유익이 되리라. And the hour and the day is not given unto them, wherefore let them act upon this land as for years, and this shall turn unto them for their good.
교성 51:18 보라, 이것은 다른 여러 곳에서, 모든 교회에서, 나의 종 에드워드 파트리지에게 본이 되리라. Behold, this shall be an example unto my servant Edward Partridge, in other places, in all churches.
교성 51:19 그리고 누구든지 충실하고 의로우며 지혜로운 청지기로 인정되는 자는 자기주인의 기쁨에 참여할 것이요 또 영생을 상속하리라. And whoso is found a faithful, a just, and a wise steward shall enter into the joy of his Lord, and shall inherit eternal life.
교성 51:20 진실로 내가 너희에게 이르노니, 나는 예수 그리스도라, 너희가 생각하지 아니한 시각에 속히 오리라. 참으로 그러하리라. 아멘. Verily, I say unto you, I am Jesus Christ, who cometh quickly, in an hour you think not. Even so. Amen.
