소개 1831년 11월 12일 오하이오 주 커틀랜드에서 선지자 조셉 스미스를 통하여 주신 계시(교회사 1:235~237). 선지자가 기록한 역사에는 11월 1일부터 12일까지 양일을 포함하여 네 번의 특별 대회가 개최된 것으로 기술되어 있다. 이 마지막 모임에서 후일에 교리와 성약이라고 부르게 된 계명의 책의 지대한 중요성이 검토되었고, 선지자는 이 책을 가리켜 "이 마지막 날에 교회의 기초가 되고, 세상에 유익이 되며, 우리 구주의 왕국의 여러 비밀의 열쇠가 또다시 사람에게 위임되었음을 보여 주는 것"이라 언급하고 있다(교회사 1:235). Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Kirtland, Ohio, November 12, 1831. HC 1: 235—237. The history written by the Prophet states that four special conferences were held from the 1st to the 12th of November, inclusive. In the last of these assemblies the great importance of the Book of Commandments, later called the Doctrine and Covenants, was considered; and the Prophet refers to it as being “the foundation of the Church in these last days, and a benefit to the world, showing that the keys of the mysteries of the kingdom of our Savior are again entrusted to man.”

교성 70:3 곧 나 주는 내가 지금까지 그들에게 주었고, 또 이후에 그들에게 주게 될 계시들과 계명들을 맡을 청지기로 그들을 지명하고 그들을 성임하였나니, I, the Lord, have appointed them, and ordained them to be stewards over the revelations and commandments which I have given unto them, and which I shall hereafter give unto them;
교성 70:4 또 이 청지기 직분의 보고서를 나는 심판의 날에 그들에게 요구하리라. And an account of this stewardship will I require of them in the day of judgment.
교성 70:5 그런즉 내가 그들에게 지명하였으니, 그것을 관리하고 그것에 관한 일, 그러하도다, 그것에서 얻는 이익을 관리하는 것, 이것이 하나님의 교회 안에서 그들이 해야 할 일이니라. Wherefore, I have appointed unto them, and this is their business in the church of God, to manage them and the concerns thereof, yea, the benefits thereof.
교성 70:6 그런즉 한 가지 계명을 내가 그들에게 주노니, 그들은 이러한 것을 교회 회원에게나 세상에게 주지 말아야 하느니라. Wherefore, a commandment I give unto them, that they shall not give these things unto the church, neither unto the world;
교성 70:7 그러할지라도 그들이 자신들에게 반드시 있어야 할 것과 부족한 것을 필요 이상으로 더 많이 받게 되면, 그것은 모름지기 나의 창고에 넣어야 하느니라. Nevertheless, inasmuch as they receive more than is needful for their necessities and their wants, it shall be given into my storehouse;
교성 70:8 그리고 그 이익은 시온의 주민을 위하여, 그리고 그들의 세대가 왕국의 율법에 따라 상속자가 되는 한 그들을 위하여 헌납되어야 하느니라. And the benefits shall be consecrated unto the inhabitants of Zion, and unto their generations, inasmuch as they become heirs according to the laws of the kingdom.
교성 70:9 보라, 이것은 나 주가 어느 사람에게든지 이미 지명하였거나 이후에 지명하는 대로 청지기 직분을 맡게 될 각 사람에게 주가 요구하는 것이니라. Behold, this is what the Lord requires of every man in his stewardship, even as I, the Lord, have appointed or shall hereafter appoint unto any man.
교성 70:10 그리고 보라, 살아 계신 하나님의 교회에 속한 자로서 이 율법이 면제되는 자는 아무도 없느니라. And behold, none are exempt from this law who belong to the church of the living God;
교성 70:11 그러하도다. 감독이나 주의 창고를 지키는 대리인이나 현세적인 일을 맡아보는 청지기 직분에 임명된 자도 면제되지 아니하느니라. Yea, neither the bishop, neither the agent who keepeth the Lord’s storehouse, neither he who is appointed in a stewardship over temporal things.
교성 70:12 영적인 일을 집행하도록 임명된 자도 현세적인 일을 집행하는 청지기 직분에 임명된 자와 마찬가지로 자기의 삯을 받음이 마땅하니라. He who is appointed to administer spiritual things, the same is worthy of his hire, even as those who are appointed to a stewardship to administer in temporal things;
교성 70:13 그러하도다. 오히려 더 풍부하게 받을 만하니, 그 풍부함은 영의 나타내심을 통하여 그들에게 더욱 풍성하게 되느니라. Yea, even more abundantly, which abundance is multiplied unto them through the manifestations of the Spirit.
교성 70:14 그러할지라도, 현세적인 일에 있어서 너희는 평등하게 되어야 하나니, 이를 마지못해 하지 말라. 그렇지 아니하면, 영의 풍성한 나타내심은 보류되리라. Nevertheless, in your temporal things you shall be equal, and this not grudgingly, otherwise the abundance of the manifestations of the Spirit shall be withheld.
교성 70:15 이제 내가 이 명령을 나의 종들에게 주는 것은 그들이 머물러 있는 동안 그들의 유익을 위하여, 그들 머리 위에 나의 축복을 나타내기 위하여, 그리고 그들의 부지런함에 대한 보상과 그들의 안전을 위하여, Now, this commandment I give unto my servants for their benefit while they remain, for a manifestation of my blessings upon their heads, and for a reward of their diligence and for their security;
교성 70:16 음식을 위하고 의복을 위하여, 기업을 위하여, 집을 위하고 땅을 위하여 주는 것이니, 나 주가 그들을 어떠한 상황에 처하게 하든지, 또 나 주가 그들을 어떠한 곳에 보내든지 그리하려는 것이니라. For food and for raiment; for an inheritance; for houses and for lands, in whatsoever circumstances I, the Lord, shall place them, and whithersoever I, the Lord, shall send them.
교성 70:17 이는 그들이 많은 일에 충실하여 왔으며, 죄를 범하지 아니한 만큼 잘 행하였음이니라. For they have been faithful over many things, and have done well inasmuch as they have not sinned.
교성 70:18 보라, 나 주는 자비로운즉 그들을 축복하리니, 그들은 이러한 일들의 기쁨에 참여하리라. 참으로 그러하도다. 아멘. Behold, I, the Lord, am merciful and will bless them, and they shall enter into the joy of these things. Even so. Amen.
