소개 유다인과 예루살렘 거민들아 너희는 스스로 할례를 행하여 너희 마음 가죽을 베고 나 여호와께 속하라 Israel and Judah called to repentance—Jeremiah laments for the miseries of Judah.

 
레 4:1 여호와께서 이르시되 이스라엘아 네가 돌아오려거든 내게로 돌아오라 네가 만일 나의 목전에서 가증한 것을 버리고 네가 흔들리지 아니하며 If thou wilt return, O Israel, saith the LORD, return unto me: and if thou wilt put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou not remove.

(23-11) 예레미야 4:1~4.“너희는 스스로 할례를 행하여”

할례는 자녀가 성약의 자녀로 태어나 8세가 될 때까지의 죄에 대하여는 책임을 지지 않는다는 표시로 아브라함에게 주어진 표적이다. 경전 여러 곳에서 주님은 책임 연령 이후의 인간에게 참된 할례는 마음의 할례임을 가르치셨다(신명기 10:16; 30:6; 예레미야 9:25~29). 사람은 마음으로 성약을 받아들여, 신앙, 회개, 침례의 과정을 통하여 죄를 없애야 한다.  
레 4:2 진실과 정의와 공의로 여호와의 삶을 두고 맹세하면 나라들이 나로 말미암아 스스로 복을 빌며 나로 말미암아 자랑하리라 And thou shalt swear, The Lord liveth, in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness; and the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.
레 4:3 여호와께서 유다와 예루살렘 사람에게 이와 같이 이르노라 너희 묵은 땅을 갈고 가시덤불에 파종하지 말라 For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.
레 4:4 유다인과 예루살렘 주민들아 너희는 스스로 할례를 행하여 너희 마음 가죽을 베고 나 여호와께 속하라 그리하지 아니하면 너희 악행으로 말미암아 나의 분노가 불 같이 일어나 사르리니 그것을 끌 자가 없으리라 Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.
레 4:5 너희는 유다에 선포하며 예루살렘에 공포하여 이르기를 이 땅에서 나팔을 불라 하며 또 크게 외쳐 이르기를 너희는 모이라 우리가 견고한 성으로 들어가자 하고 Declare ye in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, Blow ye the trumpet in the land: cry, gather together, and say, Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the defenced cities.

(23-12) 예레미야 4:5~31. 다가오는 재앙

예레미야 4장 5~31절에서 주님은 여러 가지 비유적인 형상을 사용하여 유다에게 바야흐로 임할 재앙을 예견하셨다.

    사자(7절). 무서운 파괴력을 지닌 사자로 이름이 나있는 바벨론이 힘차게 사냥을 나설 때까지 숨어 있던 수풀에서부터 나오려 하였다.

    뜨거운 바람(11절). 뜨거운 사막의 바람이 오랫동안 세차게 불 때 팔레스타인 지역은 큰 재해를 입는다. 왜냐하면 그 바람은 농작물과 가축과 사람들로부터 습기를 모두 빼앗아 버리기 때문에 무서운 결과를 낳는 것이다. 이 바람은 곡식을 키질할 때 겨를 날려 보내는 미풍이 아니라 강한 바람이다.(13절 참조)

    구름과 회오리바람(13절). 바벨론의 군대가 하늘을 덮은 큰 천둥을 동반하는 구름 같으며, 그 영향은 큰 태풍과 같은 것이다.

    천지 창조 이전처럼 혼돈하고 공허한 땅(23절). 창세기 1:2 참조. 파괴가 너무도 커서 창조가 이루어지기 전과 같게 될 것이다.

    붉은 옷을 입음(30절). 과거의 애인으로부터 버림받은 창녀처럼, 비참한 곤경에 빠진 유다는 필사적으로 위안을 얻기 위하여 거짓 신으로부터의 도움을 찾으나 도움을 받지 못할 것이다.  
레 4:6 시온을 향하여 깃발을 세우라, 도피하라, 지체하지 말라, 내가 북방에서 재난과 큰 멸망을 가져오리라 Set up the standard toward Zion: retire, stay not: for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction.
레 4:7 사자가 그 수풀에서 올라왔으며 나라들을 멸하는 자가 나아 왔으되 네 땅을 황폐하게 하려고 이미 그의 처소를 떠났은즉 네 성읍들이 황폐하여 주민이 없게 되리니 The lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; he is gone forth from his place to make thy land desolate; and thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.
레 4:8 이로 말미암아 너희는 굵은 베를 두르고 애곡하라 이는 여호와의 맹렬한 노가 아직 너희에게서 돌이키지 아니하였음이라 For this gird you with sackcloth, lament and howl: for the fierce anger of the LORD is not turned back from us.
레 4:9 여호와의 말씀이니라 그 날에 왕과 지도자들은 낙심할 것이며 제사장들은 놀랄 것이며 선지자들은 깜짝 놀라리라 And it shall come to pass at that day, saith the LORD, that the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the princes; and the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder.
레 4:10 내가 이르되 슬프도소이다 주 여호와여 주께서 진실로 이 백성과 예루살렘을 크게 속이셨나이다 이르시기를 너희에게 평강이 있으리라 하시더니 칼이 생명에 이르렀나이다 Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! surely thou hast greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall have peace; whereas the sword reacheth unto the soul.
레 4:11 그 때에 이 백성과 예루살렘에 전할 자가 있어서 뜨거운 바람이 광야에 있는 헐벗은 산에서 내 딸 백성에게 불어온다 하리라 이는 키질하기 위함도 아니요 정결하게 하려 함도 아니며 At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse,
레 4:12 이보다 더 강한 바람이 나를 위하여 오리니 이제 내가 그들에게 심판을 행할 것이라 Even a full wind from those places shall come unto me: now also will I give sentence against them.
레 4:13 보라 그가 구름 같이 올라오나니 그의 병거는 회오리바람 같고 그의 말들은 독수리보다 빠르도다 우리에게 화 있도다 우리는 멸망하도다 하리라 Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are spoiled.
레 4:14 예루살렘아 네 마음의 악을 씻어 버리라 그리하면 구원을 얻으리라 네 악한 생각이 네 속에 얼마나 오래 머물겠느냐 O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?
레 4:15 단에서 소리를 선포하며 에브라임 산에서 재앙을 공포하는도다 For a voice declareth from Dan, and publisheth affliction from mount Ephraim.
레 4:16 너희는 여러 나라에 전하며 또 예루살렘에 알리기를 에워싸고 치는 자들이 먼 땅에서부터 와서 유다 성읍들을 향하여 소리를 지른다 하라 Make ye mention to the nations; behold, publish against Jerusalem, that watchers come from a far country, and give out their voice against the cities of Judah.
레 4:17 그들이 밭을 지키는 자 같이 예루살렘을 에워싸나니 이는 그가 나를 거역했기 때문이니라 여호와의 말씀이니라 As keepers of a field, are they against her round about; because she hath been rebellious against me, saith the LORD.
레 4:18 네 길과 행위가 이 일들을 부르게 하였나니 이는 네가 악함이라 그 고통이 네 마음에까지 미치느니라 Thy way and thy doings have procured these things unto thee; this is thy wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reacheth unto thine heart.
레 4:19 슬프고 아프다 내 마음속이 아프고 내 마음이 답답하여 잠잠할 수 없으니 이는 나의 심령이 나팔 소리와 전쟁의 경보를 들음이로다 My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.
레 4:20 패망에 패망이 연속하여 온 땅이 탈취를 당하니 나의 장막과 휘장은 갑자기 파멸되도다 Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled: suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains in a moment.
레 4:21 내가 저 깃발을 보며 나팔 소리 듣기를 어느 때까지 할꼬 How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?
레 4:22 내 백성은 나를 알지 못하는 어리석은 자요 지각이 없는 미련한 자식이라 악을 행하기에는 지각이 있으나 선을 행하기에는 무지하도다 For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.
레 4:23 보라 내가 땅을 본즉 혼돈하고 공허하며 하늘에는 빛이 없으며 I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.
레 4:24 내가 산들을 본즉 다 진동하며 작은 산들도 요동하며 I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly.
레 4:25 내가 본즉 사람이 없으며 공중의 새가 다 날아갔으며 I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled.
레 4:26 보라 내가 본즉 좋은 땅이 황무지가 되었으며 그 모든 성읍이 여호와의 앞 그의 맹렬한 진노 앞에 무너졌으니 I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger.
레 4:27 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시길 이 온 땅이 황폐할 것이나 내가 진멸하지는 아니할 것이며 For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end.
레 4:28 이로 말미암아 땅이 슬퍼할 것이며 위의 하늘이 어두울 것이라 내가 이미 말하였으며 작정하였고 후회하지 아니하였은즉 또한 거기서 돌이키지 아니하리라 하셨음이로다 For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black: because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it.
레 4:29 기병과 활 쏘는 자의 함성으로 말미암아 모든 성읍 사람들이 도망하여 수풀에 들어가고 바위에 기어오르며 각 성읍이 버림을 당하여 거기 사는 사람이 없나니 The whole city shall flee for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen; they shall go into thickets, and climb up upon the rocks: every city shall be forsaken, and not a man dwell therein.
레 4:30 멸망을 당한 자여 네가 어떻게 하려느냐 네가 붉은 옷을 입고 금장식으로 단장하고 눈을 그려 꾸밀지라도 네가 화장한 것이 헛된 일이라 연인들이 너를 멸시하여 네 생명을 찾느니라 And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life.
레 4:31 내가 소리를 들은즉 여인의 해산하는 소리 같고 초산하는 자의 고통하는 소리 같으니 이는 시온의 딸의 소리라 그가 헐떡이며 그의 손을 펴고 이르기를 내게 화가 있도다 죽이는 자로 말미암아 나의 심령이 피곤하도다 하는도다 For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, and the anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands, saying, Woe is me now! for my soul is wearied because of murderers.
