소개 내가 언제든지 어느 민족이나 국가를 뽑거나 파하거나 멸하리라 한다고 하자, 만일 나의 말한 그 민족이 그 악에서 돌이키면 내가 그에게 내리기로 생각하였던 재앙에 대하여 뜻을 돌이키겠고 Israel is as potter’s clay in the hands of the Lord—If nations repent, the Lord withholds the evil decreed against them—The Jews shall be scattered.

 
레 18:1 여호와께로부터 예레미야에게 임한 말씀에 이르시되 The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

(23-39) 예레미야 18:1~10. 유다는 왜 토기장이의 손에 있는 진흙인가?

“히버 시 킴볼 장로는 선지자 조셉 스미스의 집에서 예레미야 18장에 나오는 토기장이의 손에 있는 진흙에 대한 비유를 설명하면서, 토기장이의 손에서 모양이 잘 만들어지지 않으면 물레에서 떼어 내어 다시 분쇄기로 던져져 다음 가마로 들어가 불명예스런 그릇이 된다고 가르쳤다. 그러나 토기장이의 손에서 잘 다듬어진 진흙은 모두 유연하여 명예스러운 값진 그릇이 되어 언제까지나 즐겨 사용될 것이다. 하나님의 손에서 유연하여 그의 계명에 순종하는 자는 명예로운 그릇으로서 하나님께서 그들을 받아들이실 것이다.

레 18:2 너는 일어나 토기장이의 집으로 내려가라 내가 거기에서 내 말을 네게 들려 주리라 하시기로 Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.
레 18:3 내가 토기장이의 집으로 내려가서 본즉 그가 녹로로 일을 하는데 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.
레 18:4 진흙으로 만든 그릇이 토기장이의 손에서 터지매 그가 그것으로 자기 의견에 좋은 대로 다른 그릇을 만들더라 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.
레 18:5 그 때에 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하니라 이르시되 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
레 18:6 여호와의 말씀이니라 이스라엘 족속아 이 토기장이가 하는 것 같이 내가 능히 너희에게 행하지 못하겠느냐 이스라엘 족속아 진흙이 토기장이의 손에 있음 같이 너희가 내 손에 있느니라 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.
레 18:7 내가 어느 민족이나 국가를 뽑거나 부수거나 멸하려 할 때에 At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;
레 18:8 만일 내가 말한 그 민족이 그의 악에서 돌이키면 내가 그에게 내리기로 생각하였던 재앙에 대하여 뜻을 돌이키겠고 If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.
레 18:9 내가 어느 민족이나 국가를 건설하거나 심으려 할 때에 And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;
레 18:10 만일 그들이 나 보기에 악한 것을 행하여 내 목소리를 청종하지 아니하면 내가 그에게 유익하게 하리라고 한 복에 대하여 뜻을 돌이키리라 If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.
레 18:11 그러므로 이제 너는 유다 사람들과 예루살렘 주민들에게 말하여 이르기를 여호와의 말씀에 보라 내가 너희에게 재앙을 내리며 계책을 세워 너희를 치려 하노니 너희는 각기 악한 길에서 돌이키며 너희의 길과 행위를 아름답게 하라 하셨다 하라 Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.

 
레 18:12 그러나 그들이 말하기를 이는 헛되니 우리는 우리의 계획대로 행하며 우리는 각기 악한 마음이 완악한 대로 행하리라 하느니라 And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.

 
레 18:13 그러므로 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 너희는 누가 이러한 일을 들었는지 여러 나라 가운데 물어보라 처녀 이스라엘이 심히 가증한 일을 행하였도다 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ask ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things: the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing.

 
레 18:14 레바논의 눈이 어찌 들의 바위를 떠나겠으며 먼 곳에서 흘러내리는 찬물이 어찌 마르겠느냐 Will a man leave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken?

 
레 18:15 무릇 내 백성은 나를 잊고 허무한 것에게 분향하거니와 이러한 것들은 그들로 그들의 길 곧 그 옛길에서 넘어지게 하며 곁길 곧 닦지 아니한 길로 행하게 하여 Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;

 
레 18:16 그들의 땅으로 두려움과 영원한 웃음 거리가 되게 하리니 그리로 지나는 자마다 놀라서 그의 머리를 흔들리라 To make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and wag his head.

 
레 18:17 내가 그들을 그들의 원수 앞에서 흩어 버리기를 동풍으로 함 같이 할 것이며 그들의 재난의 날에는 내가 그들에게 등을 보이고 얼굴을 보이지 아니하리라 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy: I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

(23-40) 예레미야 18:17~23.“그를 치자”

예레미야의 대담성 때문에 백성들은 선지자를 벌하려 모의하였다.“우리가 혀로 그를 치고”(18절)라는 구절은 “그의 혀를 치자”는 말로 해석하는 것이 나을 것이다. 중동 지역의 몇몇 나라에서는 지금까지도 거짓말에 대한 형벌은 구두창과 같이 단단한 가죽으로 죄인의 입을 때리는 것이다.(클라크, 주해서, 4:303 참조) 
레 18:18 그들이 말하기를 오라 우리가 꾀를 내어 예레미야를 치자 제사장에게서 율법이, 지혜로운 자에게서 책략이, 선지자에게서 말씀이 끊어지지 아니할 것이니 오라 우리가 혀로 그를 치고 그의 어떤 말에도 주의하지 말자 하나이다 Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.
레 18:19 여호와여 나를 돌아보사 나와 더불어 다투는 그들의 목소리를 들어 보옵소서 Give heed to me, O LORD, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me.
레 18:20 어찌 악으로 선을 갚으리이까마는 그들이 나의 생명을 해하려고 구덩이를 팠나이다 내가 주의 분노를 그들에게서 돌이키려 하고 주의 앞에 서서 그들을 위하여 유익한 말을 한 것을 기억하옵소서 Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.
레 18:21 그러하온즉 그들의 자녀를 기근에 내어 주시며 그들을 칼의 세력에 넘기시며 그들의 아내들은 자녀를 잃고 과부가 되며 그 장정은 죽음을 당하며 그 청년은 전장에서 칼을 맞게 하시며 Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and pour out their blood by the force of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and be widows; and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle.
레 18:22 주께서 군대로 갑자기 그들에게 이르게 하사 그들의 집에서 부르짖음이 들리게 하옵소서 이는 그들이 나를 잡으려고 구덩이를 팠고 내 발을 빠뜨리려고 올무를 놓았음이니이다 Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them: for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.
레 18:23 여호와여 그들이 나를 죽이려 하는 계략을 주께서 다 아시오니 그 악을 사하지 마옵시며 그들의 죄를 주의 목전에서 지우지 마시고 그들을 주 앞에 넘어지게 하시되 주께서 노하시는 때에 이같이 그들에게 행하옵소서 하니라 Yet, LORD, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.
