소개 지혜로운 자는 그 지혜를 자랑치 말라 용사는 그 용맹을 자랑치 말라 부자는 그 부함을 자랑치 말라 Jeremiah bewails the sins of the people—They will be scattered among the heathen and punished.

(23-20) 예레미야 9장. 예레미야의 애가

아마도 아들 압살롬에 대한 다윗의 탄식(사무엘하 18:33 참조), 또는 예루살렘에 대한 예수의 선지자적인 애가(마태복음 23:37 참조), 또는 멸망당한 니파이 민족에 대한 몰몬의 애가 (몰몬서 6:16~22 참조) 등을 제외하고 예레미야 9장처럼 죄에 대하여 애통하는 감동적인 구절은 경전에서 찾아보기 힘들다.

예레미야 9장 17~22절에서 주님은 어떤 사람의 사망에 대하여 오랫동안 곡하는 전문적인 여인을 고용하였던 고대 이스라엘의 풍습을 언급하셨다. 예레미야는 유다에 대하여 애통하기 위하여 전문적인 곡하는 사람을 고용하라는 명령을 받았다.  
레 9:1 어찌하면 내 머리는 물이 되고 내 눈은 눈물 근원이 될꼬 죽임을 당한 딸 내 백성을 위하여 주야로 울리로다 Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

 
레 9:2 내가 광야에서 나그네가 머무를 곳을 얻는다면 내 백성을 떠나 가리니 그들은 다 간음하는 자요 반역한 자의 무리가 됨이로다 Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.

 
레 9:3 여호와의 말씀이니라 그들이 활을 당김 같이 그들의 혀를 놀려 거짓을 말하며 그들이 이 땅에서 강성하나 진실하지 아니하고 악에서 악으로 진행하며 또 나를 알지 못하느니라 And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the LORD.

 
레 9:4 너희는 각기 이웃을 조심하며 어떤 형제든지 믿지 말라 형제마다 완전히 속이며 이웃마다 다니며 비방함이라 Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders.

 
레 9:5 그들은 각기 이웃을 속이며 진실을 말하지 아니하며 그들의 혀로 거짓말하기를 가르치며 악을 행하기에 지치거늘 And they will deceive every one his neighbour, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity.

 
레 9:6 네가 사는 곳이 속이는 일 가운데 있도다 그들은 속이는 일로 말미암아 나를 알기를 싫어하느니라 여호와의 말씀이니라 Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, saith the LORD.

 
레 9:7 그러므로 만군의 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 보라 내가 내 딸 백성을 어떻게 처치할꼬 그들을 녹이고 연단하리라 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will melt them, and try them; for how shall I do for the daughter of my people?

 
레 9:8 그들의 혀는 죽이는 화살이라 거짓을 말하며 입으로는 그 이웃에게 평화를 말하나 마음으로는 해를 꾸미는도다 Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he layeth his wait.

 
레 9:9 내가 이 일들로 말미암아 그들에게 벌하지 아니하겠으며 내 마음이 이런 나라에 보복하지 않겠느냐 여호와의 말씀이니라 Shall I not visit them for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

 
레 9:10 내가 산들을 위하여 울며 부르짖으며 광야 목장을 위하여 슬퍼하나니 이는 그것들이 불에 탔으므로 지나는 자가 없으며 거기서 가축의 소리가 들리지 아니하며 공중의 새도 짐승도 다 도망하여 없어졌음이라 For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none can pass through them; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled; they are gone.

 
레 9:11 내가 예루살렘을 무더기로 만들며 승냥이 굴이 되게 하겠고 유다의 성읍들을 황폐하게 하여 주민이 없게 하리라 And I will make Jerusalem heaps, and a den of dragons; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.

 
레 9:12 지혜가 있어서 이 일을 깨달을 만한 자가 누구며 여호와의 입의 말씀을 받아서 선포할 자가 누구인고 이 땅이 어찌하여 멸망하여 광야 같이 불타서 지나가는 자가 없게 되었느냐 Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom the mouth of the LORD hath spoken, that he may declare it, for what the land perisheth and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passeth through?

 
레 9:13 여호와께서 말씀하시되 이는 그들이 내가 그들의 앞에 세운 나의 율법을 버리고 내 목소리를 순종하지 아니하며 그대로 행하지 아니하고 And the LORD saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein;

 
레 9:14 그 마음의 완악함을 따라 그 조상들이 자기에게 가르친 바알들을 따랐음이라 But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them:

 
레 9:15 그러므로 만군의 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 보라 내가 그들 곧 이 백성에게 쑥을 먹이며 독한 물을 마시게 하고 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink.

 
레 9:16 그들과 그들의 조상이 알지 못하던 여러 나라 가운데에 그들을 흩어 버리고 진멸되기까지 그 뒤로 칼을 보내리라 하셨느니라 I will scatter them also among the heathen, whom neither they nor their fathers have known: and I will send a sword after them, till I have consumed them.

(23-21) 예레미야 9:16. 유다가 완전히 진멸되었는가?

진멸된다는 것은 멸종된다는 의미가 아니라 이스라엘의 분산에 대한 예언의 문맥에서 볼 때, 진멸 또는 멸망된다는 것은 완전히 해체 또는 해산되어 한 국가로서의 이스라엘의 권세, 영향력, 결합성이 사라짐을 의미한다. 신명기 4장 26절에서 모세는 이스라엘이“진멸”될 것이라고 말하였다. 그러나 그 다음의 성구들은 이스라엘이 집없는 개개인으로 여전히 존속함을 보여 준다.  
레 9:17 만군의 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 너희는 잘 생각해 보고 곡하는 부녀를 불러오며 또 사람을 보내 지혜로운 부녀를 불러오되 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for cunning women, that they may come:

 
레 9:18 그들로 빨리 와서 우리를 위하여 애곡하여 우리의 눈에서 눈물이 떨어지게 하며 우리 눈꺼풀에서 물이 쏟아지게 하라 And let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters.

 
레 9:19 이는 시온에서 통곡하는 소리가 들리기를 우리가 아주 망하였구나 우리가 크게 부끄러움을 당하였구나 우리가 그 땅을 떠난 것은 그들이 우리 거처를 헐었음이로다 함이로다 For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we spoiled! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because our dwellings have cast us out.

 
레 9:20 부녀들이여 여호와의 말씀을 들으라 너희 귀에 그 입의 말씀을 받으라 너희 딸들에게 애곡하게 하고 각기 이웃에게 슬픈 노래를 가르치라 Yet hear the word of the LORD, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbour lamentation.

 
레 9:21 무릇 사망이 우리 창문을 통하여 넘어 들어오며 우리 궁실에 들어오며 밖에서는 자녀들을 거리에서는 청년들을 멸절하려 하느니라 For death is come up into our windows, and is entered into our palaces, to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets.

 
레 9:22 너는 이같이 말하라 여호와의 말씀에 사람의 시체가 분토 같이 들에 떨어질 것이며 추수하는 자의 뒤에 버려져 거두지 못한 곡식단 같이 되리라 하셨느니라 Speak, Thus saith the LORD, Even the carcases of men shall fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the harvestman, and none shall gather them.

 
레 9:23 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 지혜로운 자는 그의 지혜를 자랑하지 말라 용사는 그의 용맹을 자랑하지 말라 부자는 그의 부함을 자랑하지 말라 Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:

 
레 9:24 자랑하는 자는 이것으로 자랑할지니 곧 명철하여 나를 아는 것과 나 여호와는 사랑과 정의와 공의를 땅에 행하는 자인 줄 깨닫는 것이라 나는 이 일을 기뻐하노라 여호와의 말씀이니라 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

 
레 9:25 여호와의 말씀이니라 보라 날이 이르면 할례 받은 자와 할례 받지 못한 자를 내가 다 벌하리니 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised;

 
레 9:26 곧 애굽과 유다와 에돔과 암몬 자손과 모압과 및 광야에 살면서 살쩍을 깎은 자들에게라 무릇 모든 민족은 할례를 받지 못하였고 이스라엘은 마음에 할례를 받지 못하였느니라 하셨느니라 Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart.
