 For behold, the armies of the Lamanites had come in upon the wilderness side, into the borders of the land, even into the city of Ammonihah, and began to slay the people and destroy the city. 16:2.보라 레이맨의 군대가 제이라헤믈라 땅 변방 광야로 진격해 와서 앰몬아이하성에까지 침입하여 사람들을 죽이고 마을을 짓밟더라. 
앨 16:3 또 이제 이렇게 되었나니 니파이인들이 미처 그들을 그 땅 밖으로 몰아 내기에 충분한 군대를 일으키기도 전에, 그들이 앰몬아이하 성에 있던 백성들과 또한 노아의 경계 부근의 얼마를 멸하고, 다른 자들을 광야로 사로잡아 갔더라.

 

 And now it came to pass, before the Nephites could raise a sufficient army to drive them out of the land, they had destroyed the people who were in the city of Ammonihah, and also some around the borders of Noah, and taken others captive into the wilderness. 16:3.니파이인들이 미처 저들을 쫓아낼만한 군사들을 준비하기 전에 저들은 앰몬아이하성 사람들과 노아땅 변방의 사람들을 죽이고, 더러는 포로로 잡아 광야로 끌어 갔으니, 
앨 16:4 이제 이렇게 되었나니 니파이인들이 광야로 사로잡혀 끌려간 자들을 도로 찾기 심히 원하였더라.

 

 Now it came to pass that the Nephites were desirous to obtain those who had been carried away captive into the wilderness. 16:4.이에 니파이인들은 사로잡혀 광야로 끌려간 사람들을 구출해 내기를 심히 원하였느니라.

 Therefore, he that had been appointed chief captain over the armies of the Nephites, (and his name was Zoram, and he had two sons, Lehi and Aha)—now Zoram and his two sons, knowing that Alma was high priest over the church, and having heard that he had the spirit of prophecy, therefore they went unto him and desired of him to know whither the Lord would that they should go into the wilderness in search of their brethren, who had been taken captive by the Lamanites. 16:5.그리하여 니파이 군대의 총지휘자로 임명된 (조램이라는 자와 그의 두 아들 리하이와 에이해) 조램과 그 아들들은, 앨마가 교회의 대제사요 예언의 능력이 있다는 소식을 들어 알고 있었으므로 앨마에게로 가서, 저들이 레이맨인들에게 붙들려 간 백성들을 찾으러 광야의 어느곳으로 나가야 하는지 하나님께 여쭈어 달라 하였느니라.

 And it came to pass that Alma inquired of the Lord concerning the matter. And Alma returned and said unto them: Behold, the Lamanites will cross the river Sidon in the south wilderness, away up beyond the borders of the land of Manti. And behold there shall ye meet them, on the east of the river Sidon, and there the Lord will deliver unto thee thy brethren who have been taken captive by the Lamanites. 16:6.앨마가 이 일을 주께 여쭈었더라. 앨마가 이들에게 돌아와 이르기를, 보라 레이맨인들이 맨타이땅 국경을 지나 남쪽 광야에 있는 시돈강을 건느니라. 보라 시돈강 동편에서 저들과 맞부딪히게 되리니, 바로 그곳에서 레이맨인들에게 잡혀간 형제들을 주께서 구출하시어 너희에게 돌려 주시리라.

 And it came to pass that Zoram and his sons crossed over the river Sidon, with their armies, and marched away beyond the borders of Manti into the south wilderness, which was on the east side of the river Sidon. 16:7.조램과 그의 아들들은 군대를 이끌고 시돈 강을 건너 맨타이 땅 경계를 넘어 남쪽 광야 즉 시돈강 동쪽으로 진군하여,

 And they came upon the armies of the Lamanites, and the Lamanites were scattered and driven into the wilderness; and they took their brethren who had been taken captive by the Lamanites, and there was not one soul of them had been lost that were taken captive. And they were brought by their brethren to possess their own lands. 16:8.레이맨의 군대를 치니, 레이맨인들이 흩어져 광야로 쫓겨 난지라 레이맨인들에게 잡혀 갔던 형제들을 하나도 잃지 않고 모두 구출했으며, 저들은 형제의 손에 구출되어 저들의 땅으로 돌아 왔느니라. 
앨 16:9 그리고 이같이 판사 제십일년이 끝나니 레이맨인들은 그 땅에서 쫓겨났고, 앰몬아이하 백성은 멸망당하였더라. 참으로 앰몬아이하 사람 중 모든 산 자가 멸망당하였으며, 그들의 큰 성도 또한 멸망되었나니, 이는 그들이 이르기를 너무 커서 하나님도 멸하실 수 없다 하던 것이라.

 

 And thus ended the eleventh year of the judges, the Lamanites having been driven out of the land, and the people of Ammonihah were destroyed; yea, every living soul of the Ammonihahites was destroyed, and also their great city, which they said God could not destroy, because of its greatness. 16:9.레이맨인들은 땅에서 쫓겨 나고 앰몬아이하의 백성들은 멸망되어 판사치세 열한 해가 끝났으니, 앰몬아이하 사람들은 한 사람도 남김없이 모두 멸망되었고, 너무 커서 하나님께서도 멸하지 못하시리라고 한 저들의 큰 도성 마저도 멸망되었으니, 
앨 16:10 그러나 보라, 하루에 그것이 황폐하여 버린 바 되었으며, 주검들이 개들과 광야의 들짐승들에게 갈기갈기 찢기었더라.

 

 But behold, in one day it was left desolate; and the carcases were mangled by dogs and wild beasts of the wilderness. 16:10.보라 하루만에 도시는 폐허가 되고 시체들은 개와 광야의 야수들의 밥이 되었더라. 
앨 16:11 그럼에도 불구하고 여러 날 후 그들의 시체가 지면에 쌓여, 그 위에 덮이는 것이 엷게 덮이니, 이제 그 악취가 심히 컸으므로 백성들이 여러해 동안 앰몬아이하 땅을 차지하러 들어가지 아니하였더라. 또 그 곳은 니허인들의 황무지라 일컬어졌나니, 이는 죽임을 당한 그들이 니허의 신앙에 속하였으며, 그들의 땅이 황무한 채 있었음이더라.

 

 Nevertheless, after many days their dead bodies were heaped up upon the face of the earth, and they were covered with a shallow covering. And now so great was the scent thereof that the people did not go in to possess the land of Ammonihah for many years. And it was called Desolation of Nehors; for they were of the profession of Nehor, who were slain; and their lands remained desolate.

 16:11.그러나 여러날 후 시체를 땅위에 쌓아올려 흙을 엷게 덮기는 했지만, 냄새가 지독하여 여러해를 두고 그땅을 가지려는 사람이 없었더라. 그후 이땅은 니허의 황무지라 불리었으니, 이는 맞아 죽은 자들이 모두 니허의 믿음을 따른 자요, 저들의 땅이 폐망되었기 때문이더라. 
앨 16:12 그리고 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 십사 년까지 레이맨인들이 니파이인들을 대적하여 싸우러 다시 오지 아니하매, 이리하여 삼 년 동안 니파이 백성은 온 땅에서 계속하여 평화를 누렸더라.

 

 And the Lamanites did not come again to war against the Nephites until the fourteenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi. And thus for three years did the people of Nephi have continual peace in all the land. 16:12.판사치세 십사년에 이르기까지는 레이맨인들이 니파이인들에게 쳐들어 오지 않아, 삼년을 두고 니파이인들은 온 나라에서 평화를 누렸더라. 
앨 16:13 또 앨마와 앰율레크는 나아가 유대인들의 방식을 따라 지어진, 그들의 여러 성전에서와, 그들의 여러 성소에서, 또한 그들의 여러 회당에서 백성들에게 회개를 전파하더라.

 

 And Alma and Amulek went forth preaching repentance to the people in their temples, and in their sanctuaries, and also in their synagogues, which were built after the manner of the Jews. 16:13.앨마와 앰율레크는 유대식으로 지은 저들의 성전이나 성당이나 공회당에 나가 백성들에게 회개의 가르침을 전파하였나니, 
앨 16:14 또 그들의 말을 듣고자 하는 자들에게는 누구에게나, 사람을 외모로 취함이 없이, 계속하여 하나님의 말씀을 나누어 주었더라.

 

 And as many as would hear their words, unto them they did impart the word of God, without any respect of persons, continually. 16:14.저들의 가르침을 받아들이는 자들에게는 누구에게나 치우침이 없이 계속하여 하나님의 말씀을 전하여 주었더라. 
앨 16:15 또 이같이 앨마와 앰율레크와, 또한 이들 외에 이 일을 위하여 택함을 받은 많은 자들이 나아가, 그 온 땅에 두루 하나님의 말씀을 전파하매, 교회의 설립이 그 땅 전역에서, 주변의 모든 지역에서, 니파이인들의 모든 백성 가운데서, 일반적인 것이 되었더라.

 

 And thus did Alma and Amulek go forth, and also many more who had been chosen for the work, to preach the word throughout all the land. And the establishment of the church became general throughout the land, in all the region round about, among all the people of the Nephites. 16:15.이렇게 앨마와 앰율레크는 일을 계속하였고, 그 외에도 많은 사람들이 임명되어 나라 방방 곡곡에서 하나님의 말씀을 전파하였으며, 니파이 백성들이 사는 곳에는 구석구석에까지 교회가 들어 서게 되었느니라. 
앨 16:16 또 그들 중에 불평등함이 없었더라. 주께서 그 오시는 때에 그들 가운데 가르치실 말씀을 받아들이도록 사람의 자녀들의 생각을 예비하시려, 곧 그들의 마음을 예비하시려 온 지면에 그의 영을 쏟으시니 -

 

 And there was no inequality among them; the Lord did pour out his Spirit on all the face of the land to prepare the minds of the children of men, or to prepare their hearts to receive the word which should be taught among them at the time of his coming— 16:16.백성들 간에는 불공평한 일이 없었나니, 이는 주께서 영의 은혜를 온 땅에 내리시어, 백성들의 마음을 준비시키셨음이라. 참으로 주께서 오실 날 저들에게 가르쳐 져야할 말씀을 받아들이도록 백성들의 마음을 준비시키시어, 
앨 16:17 이는 그들로 말씀을 거스려 완악하게 되지 않게 하여, 그들로 신앙 없는 자가 되어 멸망으로 나아가지 않게 하고, 도리어 기쁨으로 말씀을 받아, 한 가지로서 참포도나무에 접목되어, 주 그들의 하나님의 안식에 들어가게 하려 하심이라.

 

 That they might not be hardened against the word, that they might not be unbelieving, and go on to destruction, but that they might receive the word with joy, and as a branch be grafted into the true vine, that they might enter into the rest of the Lord their God. 16:17.마음을 강퍅하게 먹고 말씀을 받아들이지 않아 믿지 않게 되어 멸망당하는 일이 없을 뿐더러, 기쁘게 말씀을 받아들이게 하도록 하시었고, 그리하여 참 포도나무에 접붙혀진 나무가지처럼 주 저의 하나님의 안식에 참여하게 하도록 하셨느니라. 
앨 16:18 이제 백성 가운데 나아간 그 제사들은 일체의 거짓말함과 속임과 시기함과 다툼과 악독과 모욕함, 도적질함, 강탈함, 약탈함, 살인함, 간음을 범함 및 온갖 음란함을 금하도록 가르치며, 이러한 일들이 마땅히 그래서는 아니됨을 외치고 -

 

 Now those priests who did go forth among the people did preach against all lyings, and deceivings, and envyings, and strifes, and malice, and revilings, and stealing, robbing, plundering, murdering, committing adultery, and all manner of lasciviousness, crying that these things ought not so to be— 16:18.제사들은 백성들 앞에 나아가 일체의 거짓말, 사기, 질투, 분쟁, 악담, 거역, 도둑질, 강도, 약탈, 살인, 간음 및 모든 음란한 짓을 하지 말라고 가르치며 이러한 일들을 금하게 하였고, 
앨 16:19 반드시 속히 임할 일을 가르치되, 참으로 하나님의 아들의 오심과 그의 고난과 죽으심 그리고 죽은 자의 부활에 대하여도 가르쳤더라.

 

 Holding forth things which must shortly come; yea, holding forth the coming of the Son of God, his sufferings and death, and also the resurrection of the dead. 16:19.임박한 독생자의 강림과 그가 겪을 고난과 죽음, 그리고 그 후의 부활에 대하여도 가르쳤더니, 
앨 16:20 또 백성 중 많은 이들이 하나님의 아들이 오실 곳에 대하여 묻더니, 그가 부활하신 후 그들에게 나타나시리라는 것을 가르치매, 이를 백성이 큰 기쁨과 즐거움으로 듣더라.

 

 And many of the people did inquire concerning the place where the Son of God should come; and they were taught that he would appear unto them after his resurrection; and this the people did hear with great joy and gladness. 16:20.많은 무리가 하나님의 아들이 강림하실 곳을 묻는지라, 주께서 부활하신 후 저들에게 나타나시리라는 것을 가르치매 이 소식을 크게 기뻐하며 반가와 하더라. 
앨 16:21 이에 이제 온 땅에 두루 교회가 세워지고 난 후 - 악마에게 승리를 거두고, 하나님의 말씀이 순수한 그대로 그 온 땅에 전파되고, 주께서는 백성들 위에 그의 복을 쏟으시니 - 이같이 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제십사년이 끝났느니라.

 

 And now after the church had been established throughout all the land—having got the victory over the devil, and the word of God being preached in its purity in all the land, and the Lord pouring out his blessings upon the people—thus ended the fourteenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi. 16:21.이렇게 교회가 온 땅에 세워져 사탄을 물리치니, 하나님의 말씀이 순수하게 만방에 전파되었고, 하나님께서는 백성들에게 축복을 부어 주셨으니, 이렇게 하여 판사제도로 니파이 백성을 다스린 열 네번째 해가 끝나더라.
