 AND now it came to pass in the eleventh month of the nineteenth year, on the tenth day of the month, the armies of the Lamanites were seen approaching towards the land of Ammonihah. 49:1.치세 십구년 십일월 열흘에 레이맨인의 군대가 앰몬아이하 땅을 바라고 접근해 옴이 보이니,

 And behold, the city had been rebuilt, and Moroni had stationed an army by the borders of the city, and they had cast up dirt round about to shield them from the arrows and the stones of the Lamanites; for behold, they fought with stones and with arrows. 49:2.보라 이 때에 성읍은 이미 재건되었고 모로나이는 성읍 주변에 군대를 주둔시켜 두었으며, 그 둘레에 흙으로 뚝을 쌓아 레이맨인들의 돌과 화살을 막을 방패를 삼았으니, 보라 레이맨인들이 돌과 화살로 싸웠음이라.

 Behold, I said that the city of Ammonihah had been rebuilt. I say unto you, yea, that it was in part rebuilt; and because the Lamanites had destroyed it once because of the iniquity of the people, they supposed that it would again become an easy prey for them. 49:3.보라 내가 이르기를 앰몬아이하성이 재건되었다 하였으나, 내가 너희에게 이르노니, 앰몬아이하 성의 파괴되었던 부분이 재건된 것이라. 한때 이곳 백성들의 죄로 인하여 레이맨인들이 쉽게 이곳을 허물었으므로 저들은 이곳이 또다시 쉽게 함락되리라고 생각하였으나,

 But behold, how great was their disappointment; for behold, the Nephites had dug up a ridge of earth round about them, which was so high that the Lamanites could not cast their stones and their arrows at them that they might take effect, neither could they come upon them save it was by their place of entrance. 49:4.보라 저들의 실망이 대단하였으니, 이는 니파이인들이 그 둘레에 흙으로 높이 뚝을 쌓았으매 돌을 던지거나 화살을 쏘아도 별도리가 없게 되었으며, 출입문을 지나지 않고서는 진격해 갈수도 없었더라. 
앨 49:5 이제 이때 레이맨인의 총대장들은, 자신들의 방호 장소를 예비한 니파이인들의 지혜로 인하여 심히 놀랐더라.

 

 Now at this time the chief captains of the Lamanites were astonished exceedingly, because of the wisdom of the Nephites in preparing their places of security. 49:5.이에 레이맨인의 대장들은 자기들의 처소를 안전하게 방비한 니파이인들의 지혜에 크게 놀랐더라. 
앨 49:6 이제 레이맨인의 지휘관들은 자기들의 수효가 많음으로 인하여 생각하되, 참으로 이제까지 해왔던 대로 저들을 쉽게 공격할 수 있으리라 여겼고, 그뿐 아니라 그들 역시 방패와 가슴판으로 스스로 예비하였고, 또한 그들의 벌거벗음을 가리운 가죽옷, 곧 매우 두꺼운 옷으로 스스로 예비하였던지라.

 

 Now the leaders of the Lamanites had supposed, because of the greatness of their numbers, yea, they supposed that they should be privileged to come upon them as they had hitherto done; yea, and they had also prepared themselves with shields, and with breastplates; and they had also prepared themselves with garments of skins, yea, very thick garments to cover their nakedness. 49:6.레이맨인들의 수령들은 저들의 군병의 수효가 많고 그 위에 갑옷과 가슴판으로 무장을 갖추었으며 또한 두꺼운 가죽옷으로 몸을 가렸으매 저들이 늘 하던 대로 쉽게 니파이인들을 공략할 것으로 생각하였으며,

 And being thus prepared they supposed that they should easily overpower and subject their brethren to the yoke of bondage, or slay and massacre them according to their pleasure. 49:7.또한 이처럼 준비를 갖추었으매, 저들의 동포를 쉽사리 무찔러 정복한 다음 저들이 좋을 대로 노예의 멍에를 씌우거나 죽이거나 한꺼번에 학살할 수 있으리라고 여겼느니라. 
앨 49:8 그러나 보라, 그들로서는 지극히 놀라웁게도, 니파이인들은 일찍이 리하이의 자손들 가운데 알려진 적이 없는 방식으로 그들에 대하여 준비가 되어 있었나니, 이제 니파이인들은 레이맨인들에 대하여 모로나이가 지시하는 방식대로 싸울 준비가 되어 있었더라.

 

 But behold, to their uttermost astonishment, they were prepared for them, in a manner which never had been known among the children of Lehi. Now they were prepared for the Lamanites, to battle after the manner of the instructions of Moroni. 49:8.그러나 보라 리하이의 자손들에게 전혀 알려지지 않은 방법으로 니파이인들이 준비해 두었으매 저들의 놀람은 형용할 수도 없었으니, 이는 니파이인들이 모로나이의 지시대로 레이맨인들을 막아 싸울 전쟁을 준비한 것이었더라.

 And it came to pass that the Lamanites, or the Amalickiahites, were exceedingly astonished at their manner of preparation for war. 49:9.그리하여 레이맨인 곧 아맬리카이아인들은 니파이인들이 전쟁을 대비하여 준비해 둔 바에 크게 놀랐더라. 
앨 49:10 이제 만일 아맬리카이아 왕이 그 군대를 이끌고 니파이 땅에서 내려왔었더라면, 아마도 그는 레이맨인들로 하여금 앰몬아이하 성에 있는 니파이인들을 공격하게 하였으리니, 이는 보라, 그는 자기 백성의 피에 대하여 염려하지 아니하였음이라.

 

 Now, if king Amalickiah had come down out of the land of Nephi, at the head of his army, perhaps he would have caused the Lamanites to have attacked the Nephites at the city of Ammonihah; for behold, he did care not for the blood of his people. 49:10.만일 아맬리카이아 왕이 군대를 이끌고 니파이 땅으로 앞장 서 왔더라면 레이맨인들에게 명하여 앰몬아이하 성을 공략하여 니파이인을 쳐부수라 하였으리니, 보라 아맬리카이아는 백성들의 피를 대수롭게 여기지 않는 자임이러라.

 But behold, Amalickiah did not come down himself to battle. And behold, his chief captains durst not attack the Nephites at the city of Ammonihah, for Moroni had altered the management of affairs among the Nephites, insomuch that the Lamanites were disappointed in their places of retreat and they could not come upon them. 49:11.그러나 보라 아맬리카이아는 싸움터에 나오지 아니하였느니라. 보라 아맬리카이아의 수령들은 모로나이가 니파이인들에게 모든 것을 종전과 다르게 준비하게 한 까닭으로 앰몬아이하 성에 있는 니파이인들을 공격하지 못하였으니, 이는 니파이인들의 은신처를 보고 크게 실망함이라. 저들이 감히 니파이인들을 공략할 수 없었더라. 
앨 49:12 그리하여 그들은 광야로 퇴각하여 그들의 진을 취하고, 그들이 가서 니파이인들을 치기에는 노아 땅이 다음으로 가장 좋은 곳이라 생각하여, 노아 땅을 향하여 진군하였더라.

 

 Therefore they retreated into the wilderness, and took their camp and marched towards the land of Noah, supposing that to be the next best place for them to come against the Nephites. 49:12.그리하여 이들은 광야로 물러난 다음, 다음번에 니파이인들을 쳐부수기에 노아 땅이 알맞을 것이라 생각하여 천막을 걷어들고 노아 땅을 향하여 진군하였으니, 
앨 49:13 이는 모로나이가 주변 온 땅의 모든 성읍을 위하여 방비를 강화한 줄을, 곧 방호 보루들을 건축한 줄을 그들이 알지 못하였음이라. 그리하여 그들은 굳은 결의를 가지고 노아 땅으로 진군해 나아갔나니, 참으로 그들의 총대장들은 앞으로 나아와서 그 성의 백성을 멸하겠다고 맹세하였더라.

 

 For they knew not that Moroni had fortified, or had built forts of security, for every city in all the land round about; therefore, they marched forward to the land of Noah with a firm determination; yea, their chief captains came forward and took an oath that they would destroy the people of that city. 49:13.이는 모로나이가 변방의 모든 성읍에 안전하게 요새를 구축하여 방비를 강화한 사실을 몰랐음이라. 저들이 굳은 결의로 노아 땅을 향하여 진군하였으며, 수령들은 함께 모여 노아 성의 백성을 멸하기로 맹세하니라. 
앨 49:14 그러나 보라, 놀랍게도 지금까지 취약한 곳이었던 노아 성이 이제는 모로나이로 말미암아 견고하게 되었으니, 참으로 앰몬아이하 성의 견고함을 넘어설 정도더라.

 

 But behold, to their astonishment, the city of Noah, which had hitherto been a weak place, had now, by the means of Moroni, become strong, yea, even to exceed the strength of the city Ammonihah. 49:14.그러나 보라, 놀랍게도 늘 허술하던 노아성이 모로나이의 지시로 견고하게 되었으며, 참으로 그 위세는 앰몬아이하 성을 능가하였으니, 
앨 49:15 또 이제 보라, 이는 모로나이에게 있는 지혜였으니, 이는 그가 생각하기를 그들이 앰몬아이하 성을 보고 놀랄 것이며, 노아 성이 지금까지 이 땅에서 가장 취약한 지역이었으므로 그리로 싸우러 진군해 오리라 하였음이라. 이에 이같이 그가 바란 대로 일이 되었더라.

 

 And now, behold, this was wisdom in Moroni; for he had supposed that they would be frightened at the city Ammonihah; and as the city of Noah had hitherto been the weakest part of the land, therefore they would march thither to battle; and thus it was according to his desires. 49:15.이는 바로 모로나이의 지혜라. 그가 레이맨인들이 앰몬아이하 성을 보고 놀라 늘 허술하던 땅 노아 성으로 전쟁을 일으키려 몰려 오리라 생각 하였음이니, 모든 것이 뜻한 대로 이루어 지니라. 
앨 49:16 또 보라, 모로나이는 리하이를 임명하여 그 성 병사들의 총대장을 삼았으니, 이는 시돈 강 동편 골짜기에서 레이맨인들과 싸운 바로 그 리하이였더라.

 

 And behold, Moroni had appointed Lehi to be chief captain over the men of that city; and it was that same Lehi who fought with the Lamanites in the valley on the east of the river Sidon. 49:16.또한 모로나이는 리하이를 노아 땅의 총대장으로 삼았으니 이가 바로 시돈강 동편 계곡에서 레이맨인들과 싸운 사람이었느니라. 
앨 49:17 이에 이제 보라, 이렇게 되었나니 레이맨인들이 리하이가 그 성을 지휘하는 것을 알고 다시 실망하였으니, 이는 그들이 리하이를 심히 두려워하였음이라. 그럼에도 불구하고 그들의 총대장들이 그 성을 공격하기로 맹세했었으므로 그들은 그들의 군대를 전진시켰더라.

 

 And now behold it came to pass, that when the Lamanites had found that Lehi commanded the city they were again disappointed, for they feared Lehi exceedingly; nevertheless their chief captains had sworn with an oath to attack the city; therefore, they brought up their armies. 49:17.보라, 레이맨인들이 리하이가 그곳의 대장임을 알고 이를 두려워 하여 다시 낙담하였으나, 수령들이 이미 이 도시를 쳐부수기로 맹세를 나눈지라 군대를 전진시켰느니라. 
앨 49:18 이제 보라, 입구 부근을 제외하고는 쌓아 올린 둑이 높고, 둘러 파놓은 호가 깊어, 출입구를 통하지 않고는 다른 어떤 길로도 레이맨인들이 저들의 방호 보루에 들어갈 수가 없었더라.

 

 Now behold, the Lamanites could not get into their forts of security by any other way save by the entrance, because of the highness of the bank which had been thrown up, and the depth of the ditch which had been dug round about, save it were by the entrance. 49:18.그러나 보라, 니파이인들이 쌓아 올린 뚝은 높고 그 둘레에 파놓은 도랑은 깊어, 출입구를 통하지 않고는 레이맨인들은 도저히 니파이인들의 안전한 요새로 쳐들어 갈 길이 없었으며, 
앨 49:19 그리고 이리하여 니파이인들은 무릇 다른 어떤 길로 보루에 들어오고자 기어 오르기를 꾀하는 자들에게는 돌과 화살을 던져, 그들을 다 멸할 준비가 되어 있었더라.

 

 And thus were the Nephites prepared to destroy all such as should attempt to climb up to enter the fort by any other way, by casting over stones and arrows at them. 49:19.니파이인들은 또한 요새를 침공하고자 뚝을 기어오르거나 다른 곳으로 넘어오는 자들을 돌을 던지거나 화살을 쏘아 물리칠수 있도록 준비해 두었고, 
앨 49:20 이리하여 저들, 참으로 저들 중 가장 강한 병사들의 무리가, 무릇 출입하는 곳으로 말미암아 저들의 방호 장소에 들어오기를 꾀하는 자들을 저들의 칼과 저들의 물매로 다 쳐 쓰러뜨릴 준비가 되어 있었나니, 이같이 저들은 레이맨인들로부터 스스로를 지킬 준비가 되어 있었더라.

 

 Thus they were prepared, yea, a body of their strongest men, with their swords and their slings, to smite down all who should attempt to come into their place of security by the place of entrance; and thus were they prepared to defend themselves against the Lamanites. 49:20.출입구에는 그 중 힘이 센 자들을 뽑아 검과 투석기로 무장시켜 요새를 허물고자 그곳으로 덤벼드는 자들을 치게 하였으니, 레이맨인들의 침략에 대비하여 니파이인들은 이를 방어할 만반의 준비를 갖춘 것이라. 
앨 49:21 이에 이렇게 되었나니 레이맨인의 대장들이 니파이인들의 방호 장소로 들어가기 위하여 출입 장소 앞으로 그들의 군대를 전진시키고 니파이인들과 싸우기 시작하였으나 보라, 그들이 그 때마다 격퇴 당하여, 이윽고 막대한 살육을 당하더라.

 

 And it came to pass that the captains of the Lamanites brought up their armies before the place of entrance, and began to contend with the Nephites, to get into their place of security; but behold, they were driven back from time to time, insomuch that they were slain with an immense slaughter. 49:21.레이맨인의 수령들은 요새의 출입구 쪽으로 군사를 몰아 요새에 침입하고자 니파이인들과 싸움을 시작하였으나, 보라 번번히 격퇴당하여 헤아릴 수 없는 사상자를 내었으니, 
앨 49:22 이제 그들이 그 통로로는 니파이인들을 이길 힘을 얻지 못할 것을 알고, 저들의 군대에 이르는 한 통로를 얻어 대등한 조건으로 싸우고자 저들의 흙 제방을 파 내리기 시작하였으나 보라, 이렇게 하려다가 그들에게 던지는 돌과 화살에 쓸어버림을 당하니, 흙 제방을 허물어 내려 그들의 호를 메우는 대신, 호가 그들의 시체와 부상당한 몸으로 메워지더라.

 

 Now when they found that they could not obtain power over the Nephites by the pass, they began to dig down their banks of earth that they might obtain a pass to their armies, that they might have an equal chance to fight; but behold, in these attempts they were swept off by the stones and arrows which were thrown at them; and instead of filling up their ditches by pulling down the banks of earth, they were filled up in a measure with their dead and wounded bodies. 49:22.레이맨인들은 출입구를 통해 니파이인들을 공략하지 못할 것을 알고, 군대가 진격해 들어갈 길을 열어 대등한 조건으로 싸움을 벌이고자 뚝을 허물어 내리기 시작했으나 보라 저들이 이렇게 하려 할 때마다 돌과 화살이 저들에게 쏟아져 내려, 뚝을 허물어내려 도랑을 메꾸기는 커녕 죽은 시체와 부상을 입은 자의 몸으로 그 도랑이 메워지더라. 
앨 49:23 이리하여 니파이인들은 저들의 적을 이길 모든 힘을 가졌고, 이같이 레이맨인들은 니파이인들을 멸하기를 꾀하다가 결국 그들의 총대장들이 다 죽임을 당하고, 또한 천 명이 넘는 레이맨인들이 죽임을 당하였으되, 다른 한편으로 니파이인들 가운데는 죽임을 당한 자가 하나도 없더라.

 

 Thus the Nephites had all power over their enemies; and thus the Lamanites did attempt to destroy the Nephites until their chief captains were all slain; yea, and more than a thousand of the Lamanites were slain; while, on the other hand, there was not a single soul of the Nephites which was slain. 49:23.이처럼 니파이인들이 적을 온전히 격퇴할 힘을 가졌음에, 레이맨인들이 니파이인들을 쳐부수려 하다가 결국 수령들이 모두 맞아 죽었으니, 참으로 천명도 넘는 레이맨인들이 죽었고, 니파이인들 가운데는 목숨을 잃은 자가 하나도 없었느니라. 
앨 49:24 통로를 통하여 레이맨인들의 화살에 노출되었던 자로서 부상을 입은 자가 오십 명 가량 있었으나, 저들이 저들의 방패와 저들의 가슴판과 저들의 투구로 몸을 가렸던지라, 저들은 그 다리에 부상을 입었는데 그 중 매우 심한 부상이 많았더라.

 

 There were about fifty who were wounded, who had been exposed to the arrows of the Lamanites through the pass, but they were shielded by their shields, and their breastplates, and their head-plates, insomuch that their wounds were upon their legs, many of which were very severe. 49:24.다만 오십 명쯤이 통로를 통하여 날아온 레이맨인들의 화살에 부상을 입기는 했으나, 저들은 갑옷과 투구와 가슴판으로 몸을 가렸으므로 대개는 다리에 부상을 입었고 심하게 부상을 입은 자들도 있었더라. 
앨 49:25 이에 이렇게 되었나니, 레이맨인들이 자기 총대장들이 모두 죽임을 당한 것을 보고는 광야로 도망하였더라. 또 이렇게 되었나니 그들이 출생으로는 니파이인인 그들의 왕 아맬리카이아에게 그들의 큰 손실에 대해 알리고자 니파이 땅으로 돌아갔더라.

 

 And it came to pass, that when the Lamanites saw that their chief captains were all slain they fled into the wilderness. And it came to pass that they returned to the land of Nephi, to inform their king, Amalickiah, who was a Nephite by birth, concerning their great loss. 49:25.레이맨인들이 저들의 수령이 모두 죽은 것을 보고 광야로 흩어져 도망하여 니파이 땅으로 돌아가, 원래는 니파이인인 저들의 왕 아맬리카이아에게 저들의 막대한 피해를 보고하니, 
앨 49:26 이에 이렇게 되었나니 그가 자기 백성에게 심히 노하였으니, 이는 그가 니파이인들에 대한 자기의 욕망을 이루지 못하였고, 그들을 굴복시켜 속박의 멍에를 지게하지 못하였음이라.

 

 And it came to pass that he was exceedingly angry with his people, because he had not obtained his desire over the Nephites; he had not subjected them to the yoke of bondage. 49:26.아맬리카이아가 니파이인들을 정복하여 노예의 멍에를 씌우려던 저의 욕망이 좌절되매 저의 백성들에 대하여 크게 노하니라. 
앨 49:27 참으로 그가 심히 노하여 하나님을 저주하고, 또한 모로나이를 저주하여 그의 피를 마시겠다고 맹세하였으니, 이는 모로나이가 하나님의 계명을 지켜 그 백성의 안전을 위하여 준비한 까닭이더라.

 

 Yea, he was exceedingly wroth, and he did curse God, and also Moroni, swearing with an oath that he would drink his blood; and this because Moroni had kept the commandments of God in preparing for the safety of his people. 49:27.그의 노여움이 극심하매 그는 하나님을 저주하였고, 모로나이의 피를 마시겠다고 맹세하며 역시 모로나이를 저주하였으니, 이는 모로나이가 하나님의 계명을 지켜 백성들의 안전을 준비한 까닭이더라. 
앨 49:28 또 이렇게 되었나니 다른 한편으로 니파이 백성들은, 그 비길 데 없는 권능으로 저들의 원수의 손에서 저들을 건지신 주 그들의 하나님께 감사드렸더라.

 

 And it came to pass, that on the other hand, the people of Nephi did thank the Lord their God, because of his matchless power in delivering them from the hands of their enemies. 49:28.한편 니파이 백성들은 한량없으신 능력으로 원수의 손에서 저들을 구해 주신 주 하나님께 감사드리더라. 
앨 49:29 그리고 이같이 니파이 백성에 대한 판사 치세 제십구년이 끝났느니라.

 

 And thus ended the nineteenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi. 49:29.이렇게 하여 니파이인들의 판사치세 십구년이 끝나니, 
앨 49:30 참으로 또한 힐라맨과 시블론과 코리앤톤과 암몬과 그의 형제들, 또한 회개에 이르는 침례를 받고 하나님의 거룩한 반차에 의하여 성임되어 백성 가운데서 가르침을 베풀도록 보냄을 받은 모든 이들이 선포한 하나님의 말씀에 그들이 주의와 부지런함을 쏟은 까닭에, 교회는 심히 크게 번성하였고 그들 가운데 평화가 계속되었더라.

 

 Yea, and there was continual peace among them, and exceedingly great prosperity in the church because of their heed and diligence which they gave unto the word of God, which was declared unto them by Helaman, and Shiblon, and Corianton, and Ammon and his brethren, yea, and by all those who had been ordained by the holy order of God, being baptized unto repentance, and sent forth to preach among the people. 49:30.니파이 백성들에게는 다시 평화가 계속되었고, 힐라맨과 시블론, 코리앤톤, 그리고 암몬과 그의 형제들, 그리고 회개에 이르는 침례를 받고 성스러운 신권으로 성임되어 복음을 전파하기 위해 백성들에게 보내어진 모든 사람들이 외친 하나님의 말씀에 귀 기울이며 부지런히 말씀을 지키매 교회가 번성하였느니라.
